so my friend recently gave me his old G1, and i did some searching around and discovered that HTC made a dev version. now, being new to android, i have absolutely no clue what the differences are. i want to update my adp1 to froyo, but i get lost when i look up stuff about rooting or whatever. can anyone dumb it down for me or link me to an easy to follow walkthrough? i'm not sure whether or not guides for the g1/dream can be applied to the dev version. please help a noob in need
ADP1 shipped with bootloader 0.95.3000 whereas non-ADP shipped with 0.95.0000. 3000 let you flash unsigned images. That is the difference.
Note that all 0.95 SPLs are obsolete now.

That is the way that most of us rooted our phones. It's reasonable simple, downgrade, type teldnetd, open telnet app, install a recovery, update radio, set boot partitions(if using customMTD)/install danger SPL, and flash CM. If you would like to get as much performance as possible from your phone, I suggest using ezterry's rom, but for that you will need to update the radio and spl through adb and fastboot, which is a little bit more advanced. If you need anything don't be afraid to ask.

hm so i'm looking at the instructions on the link you gave me; i won't be able to login to my google account without a 3g plan huh? i guess i'll have to get that before i do anything?
and it doesn't matter that i have the ADP1 instead of just a regular G1?

Well in that case use this link, since your bootloader is already factory unlocked, you can use the fastboot commands to flash a recovery image. You will need to have adb and fastboot from the android sdk installed on your computer. There are guides in the rom bible on the development forum to help you with that.
EDIT: and try this trick for skipping the initial login so that you can use wifi to sign in if you have to.

unfortunately that trick does not work with the ADP1 =(
i flashed with DREAIMG.nbh and cannot bypass the setup thing; then i discovered this article: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532719
which i completed up until the "installing drivers" step that i don't know how to complete because the computer doesn't even recognize that a device is plugged in, so now my phone thinks it's a G1 and i cannot get past the login screen and i cannot complete the ADB setup with my phone. what do i do?
---------------
EDIT: alright so i bypassed the login by swapping SIMs with a friend who has a 3G plan, but anyhow, when i plug it into my comp, i don't get an option to "Install drivers from my pc" according to the guide i referenced earlier in this post....
Ok so here's the deal. I was putting a new Rom on my g1 which I've done many times before. Before I I put this Rom on I had to put certain aol and ratio on first. So I put the radio on successfully . And everything was fine (radio: 2.22.27.08) .but then I flashed the hoot (1.33.0013d) it work and its on my phone but soon as it did I noticed it turned s-on . And I'm sure that's what caused it. And I tried to restore back up roms and won't boot up. None of my roms will. It just gets to the G1 screen and shuts off and true to boot again.over and over. So my question is . Is how do I turn s-on back to s-off? Please help me
You had the same problem I was having. Which ROM are you trying to flash? I don't know if it matters or not if S is ON or OFF. Mine currently is S-ON. And up and running.
Yoshiginger something. but I gave up. and just changed the hboot and radio back and that worked. but I got another question you might can help me with about my brothers magic. his s-off changed to s-on to. the only problem is on his the recovery isn't working. so is there anyway that I can flash a hboot through bootloader or any other alternate way like maybe terminal emulated?
The other way I know is adb fastboot. He might be able to download the FlashRec.apk and install it on his phone. Then flash the recovery of his choice to see if the Recovery mode will come back.
Ok we will try it. Is that Rom you got good? Never heard of it before

1.33.0013d is S-ON but modified a little so it doesn't have all of the normal restrictions
if you use 1.33.0013d and 2708 or 2825 radio you *must* use a compatible kernel
all of the solutions to your confusion are in that post linked above
in future you should take some time to read ( and understand ) things before doing
there is no excuse here ezterry did a very good job of explaining the requirements and noting the restrictions

ezterry's gingerbread is way better than yoshiginger imo
basically yoshiginger is an earlier version of ezterry's gingerbread with some cyanogen apks added
there is no good reason to use a cut and shut job when you can use the real thing
You can also try SuperAosp. It have 15MB root additional. I am currently using it. It also works with this SPL/radio combo.

i then attempted to install custom rom using CWM recovery.
inside recovery i can install the rom fine, it says its installed, aswell as no-sense 1.5 - there are no errors.
but when i go to reboot again, it just sits on the htc boot screen and i have to pull battery to get back into recovery.

I think it's to do with the radio, someone said that in the alpharevx chat.
did they say how to fix?
is it in the alpharev x thread?
can you link?
how long do you wait for the white htc screen?
I took quite a while for it to load, ill say try reboot and wait for 30 mins
and make sure u have ext4 if the rom require ext4
and i dont think that your phone is bricked
same here...
hi, i am in the same boat as you are. I s-offed through alpharevx, great work btw! I also rooted through superoneclick by means of gingerbreak, also great work! thank these guys so much. Here comes the problem. I downloaded rom manager from the market and installed clockworkmod recovery through that. and i attempted to load a custom rom through the recovery tool. it went fine without any error. however, when i try to reboot, i get the htc logo on white background.... I flashed partition using ext4 formatting tool from here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1088498 , i also flashed the radio specified in this post....but same thing, stuck at "htc"... help...
you have to install 4EXTRecovery_v1.0.6_modded_CWMR_v4.0.0 first. you can find the steps here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1104765. when I tried with just Format_data_partition_EXT4 I got the same results as you
Thank you! I tried the other recovery you mentioned. worked like a charm! Thanks.
once you've flashed, let me know if you still have earpiece volume with the custom rom. And if you do, did you flash a new radio?

First of all...the best recovery for the g1 is amon_ra
Second of all...what rom are you trying to install?
Go into the bootloader by pressing camera+power
Tell me what your radio and hboot/spl is as of right now.

Hi,
I now have amon_ra, my Hboot is 1.33.2005/2.22.19.26i
Now choose what ROM you want to install
As of now you can flash CM6, Biffmod, and a few others with your spl and radio.
I personally recommend Froyobylaszlo (or Frayo, my mod of it...you choose). Its probably THE fastest and most full feeling rom for g1
There's ezgingerbread also
These both need a special radio and spl
Make your choice and ill tell you what you need next

Hi,
I tried to upgrade my Dream to a version of And 2.2, after flashing my phone was boot looping, so re reflashed to rc29 using xda's return to stock guide. It boots fine now in normal mode, but now I can't get into recovery and I cant get anything to flash, not even rc29 again. If I try flashing using the phone I get Model ID incorrect, with fastboot I get remote: not allow. Very few threads mention HBOOT 1.33.0014, maybe its the problem? Any help would be appreciated

HBOOT 1.33.0014

Forgot to mention, its Rogers but I don't have a sim card

you should make a gold card (just goole it)
or well can you update via ota, under settings look for updates, if you can get to 1.5 then you can use androot or maybe see if THIS GUIDE helps.
ive only rooted one rogers branded g1, and you dont do the dreaimg.nbh method rather
LIKE SO but at this point you need to move on, try some of the above stuff

ok went searching for update in settings and noticed firmware is at 1.5 , I didn't think it could update automatically without a sim? so I'm guessing DREAIMG.nbh didn't take? Just messed my recovery? I installed Androot and it says I'm "already rooted, root again?" The first guide you pointed to THIS GUIDE says for "Tmobile G1 only", should I go ahead anyway? The last one LIKE SO , I would like to try the rogers_1.89.631.1.nbh but it seems to have disappeared from the net. I'll look into the gold card idea this weekend. Thx for your input :good:

Find amonra recovery in xda, latest is 1.7 something
Put on root of sd card and name it recovery.img
Open a terminal and type
su
If you see a # procees
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
If you have an error it could be you need to add the flash image bianary or you have a bad download or named it wrong,
I figured It might work for me, now I have AmonRA recovery 1.7 :good:
So now following the guide you posted earlier http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/HTC_Dream/Rooting_Branded_EBI1s, I should install the engineering SPL, then the EB1 port file, then flash cm 6.1.zip?
Hey good! Well if you have a custom recovery you are most of the way there, now remember you have a rogers dream and need tgo flash the proper radio and spl, make sure they are listed for your phone, check md5sums, flash radio first then spl then id recomend cm5 (faster) flash rom and gapps
Do this right, just the other day someone flashed either spl first or a curropt image and got a brick. Only warning so you don't but as long as you do what I said above you'll be safe

Well...I i did a nandroid backup, tried i now have the eng SPL installed, tried the CM 6.1 as it was easier to find for my phone + the port file, but it stuck at rogers boot screen. I've seen some posts for 2708 kernel but it never mentions this in any of the install guides. I have found CM 5 roms but only with the 2708 kernel and no mention of rogers, so I'm staying clear of those for the moment. Will search some more for CM 5, its not Android 2.2 though is it?
Cm5 is 2.1 but smoother than cm6 on these phones. You can flash the one in cm wiki just flash the right kernel on top of it. If you want to do the 2708+ update (I say a good idea) then just follow ezterrys instruction in his thread. Download radio and SPL, check md5sums, and then flash via fastboot. Now they can also be flashed in recovery but I don't recommend it. After that you can flash any of the newer ROMs and it won't mater that your phone was once rogers. But older ROMs (mostly eclair and older) will need a different kernel flashed on top of them

Awesome! You may need to move to froyo if apps you need aren't avalible on 2.1, there are many good aosp and cm variants just straight cm6 is kinda poor on these phones, try a few out, make nandroids so you can change back easy, there are about a dozen 2.3 and 2.2 roms that I feel run great on the dream and I personally keep a back up of each for a quick change

Do not forget that your phone is no longer EBI1.
You will no longer need to flash EBI1 ports.
On a side note, looks like you somehow got the 1.33.0014 update.
1.33.0014 is a bootloader released by HTC somewhere last year for HTC Dream. They claimed it was unlockable, and you could flash with it. I did the unlock process, and I can promise you that HTC duped us. It's not unlockable. The unlock does absolutely nothing other than change the text at the top. I even had someone reverse some of the code, and they claimed the code for doing fastboot flash doesn't seem to be there.
yeah the .0014 official unlocked bootloader is a crock, when it first came out i was about to test it and someone else here tried first, turned into a nightmare for him so i tell all to stay away! some phones it actually isnt too bad if better ways like hacked bootloaders or radio s-off has been found for it, but its a pain and you usually need to flash a rom in recovery, extract the kernel from the .zip and then flash the kernel through fastboot.
so yeah any phone that you dont need this option, stay far away from it!
