I knows its sortof a stupid question because windows products usually (seem) to only work with other windows products, but is there an alternative to activesync. Active sync is annoying because you cant close it, and everytime i plug it in it asks me to set up my outlook stuff. All i need is something to allow file transfer... not all of the contact/calander stuff. Also if there is one out there, is there one i can put on a usb drive so i can download/transfer files on any computer?
you can use softick card export

Why don't you just disable all the contacts and calendar sync in the setup when you connect the first time? You then can do your file transfer.
I have been trying now for about 5 hours, but I can not find a way to change the active sync pathway to the internal storage area on the device.
I have 4 GB but the only way I can fill them up is by manualy transfering the files using the disk drive function and a USB conection.
Isn't there an easier way to sync the phones internal mem?
Active Sync will not let me choose where on the device it sync's the "my documents" too when I include "sync files". And windows media player doesn't know what day it is never mind which device it is talking too.
Can anyone help me?
Please help me out in my thinking about whether the device or the computer should win when there is conflicting data during a sync.
I would normally think the phone should win when it comes to contacts as I basically use outlook to keep a backup of my contacts. However I am concerned about when I do a ROM upgrade. The device will be empty at the time I first sync, and my concern is that this will cause the Outlook contacts to be deleted. Am I correct in my thinking?
I would always use the computer as the main copy and replace on the device. When you do a rom upgrade you are connecting as a new device and set up a new partnership. It will copy all contacts from the pc then.
If I have the computer as the winner, is the syncing smart enough to recognise that if I have changed a contact on the device, it is newer than the one on the computer and should thus replace the contact on the computer?
If the phone is master and its empty it'll copy from the computer, the only time the master or slave argument comes into play is if two contacts/appointments are identical in name then the master gets copied overwriting the slave.
And if the slave gets updated with at a newer time than the master, the master will over-rule even if its older.
same problem
Even I had the same problem after installing new ROM. my all contacts got deleted even from outlook. It was my luck that i had done backup of my phone with sprite backup before upgrading ROM. I restored my backup & i got my all contacts.
1. I have contacts on my X1, and on my PC (Outlook).
I make a sync - will all of the contacts appear on my X1 and PC
I mean all of the PC ones on X1, and all from X1 on PC?
So contact is lost in that process?
2. What happens when one takes out the memory card out of X1?
And puts it back?
Will all the programs installed on card work normally?
Question nr.2
For the 2 question when i take out memory card and put it back nothing changed, all apps on storage card work ok. I have 2gb card with garmin navigation, and other items.
For 1 question cant answer because i dont have outlook.
My os is windows 7 for the time.

Ok, thank you too.
Hopefully somebody DOES sync.
I actually came to the idea I remove all of the contacts, notes etc. from PC and run Sync. Hope to see all the data copied to my PC!

I SYNC!
I think it will merge the two sets of people it will add to both - but if there are any overlaps it will either ask you or there is a setting which is under Mobile Device Center which says "Overwrite contacts from X1 or PC" or something like that - although i have had someproblems with outlook where when syncing it would randomly delete both from my phone and x1 but luckily outlook has a recycle bin like feature.
Hope this anwers your question

Okay looks like my answer!
Thanks!
Done this lots of times and yes, Activesync on the PC will prompt you whether you want to merge or overwrite the data - which then applies for all your Outlook data inc. contacts, calendar, tasks and notes. If you choose to merge, AS should work out which is the most recent record when encountering exact duplicates and ditch the oldest one.
But from experience if your data is important to you I STRONGLY recommend that you do a backup of your PC Outlook data first (e.g. by exporting all to a new PST file), and also on the handheld with the excellent and free PIM Backup application, before you connect the two together. Otherwise you may end up with lots of duplications (or worse, unseen deletions), which can be an absolute nightmare to sort out.
PIM backup is also useful for keeping your essential data safe on your SD card should you need to hard reset the phone while you're away from your PC.

Just to add to that - you could also use Microsofts MyPhone service - at least that is what i have been using to store data online so there is even less chance of it being lost
Guys I really appreciate your help.
I already have PPCPimBackup,
I just wanted to be sure I understand the sync.
Right now I want to delete all contacts on my Outlook,
and sync this with X1 so all data from X1 will be copied there.
The reason is that I previously sync'd my other smartphone,
P1 on Symbian/UIQ with Outlook (to have all my contacts on X1)
but it made loose all "+" in all contacts lol.
So I manually put all "+" on X1 contacts and now want to just put it on Outlook too without a hassle....
Don't restore the PPCPimBackup contacts unless you have to. i.e lost contacts on X1 & Outlook.
I did a hard restart and it sync'd the contacts from Outlook like it should via ActiveSync. Then I restored a PPCPimBackup backup and ended up with two of every contact on the X1 and in Outlook. :/
Hi
my screen is broke on my TYTNII so I can't see anything on it. it still boots up and can connect it to a PC. annoyingly I have only ever synced with activsync the calendar and not the contacts. I selected contacts for sync in activ sync but when I click sync a message comes up that a change has occured on the server and all items must be resynced. the TYTN bleeps and presumably comes up a with a message for me to do something but I can't see it so I can get no further.
so cutting to the chase is there way I can backup my contacts on the phone direct from a connected PC - like by exploring the directories and copying a file that holds them all?
I don't know.
Look into a program called my mobiler
