Multi-tasking - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it just me or t-mobile doesn't let us talk on the phone and surf the web at the same time? I remember that I could do that on my previous G1. On WiFi my N1 does it fine but not on t-mobile's network.

I can, I was running speedtest and whatnot while on the phone with a buddy just the other day.

from what ive heard you have to be on 3G for it to use both data and voice simultaneously

Have to be on 3G

thanks for your replies guys. confirmed, you have to be on 3G.

Multi-tasking is so much more than just talking and surfing in the same time, you can do multi-tasking by surf and listen to on line music and so on

Totally off-topic, but I just wanted to say I envy you! You live in the city with some of the greatest music in the world! Swedish House music from Gothenburg is my favorite man... Cloud, Plej, Hird... I could go on, but I have to go to sleep.

Some but not all 3G handsets can
The 3G netowrks are designed to be able to allow users to have both data and voice simulateneloulsy but some handsets can't support this feature -
Multitasking isn't about the voice and data at the same time is generally a term for running more than on application on the device at the same time.

connection switching

hello, everyone. i'm leaving the cdma world behind and a sprint mogul/6800/titan and coming on over to gsm and settling in with a kaiser that will be here before 10.30am (thanks mad monkey boys!). att has hsdpa enabled in my area and i was wondering...
is there any sort of software i can use to manage my connections automatically? for idling with im+ and activesync running in the background waiting for instant messages and emails, i'm completely fine with an edge/gprs connection. but when i'm browsing, i of course want to use hsdpa. even if it's not automatic, that would be ok. i'm hoping such an app exists? thanks

There's a program called BandSwitch. Google it and you should find some more info and download sites. I believe the newest version(s) 2.x aren't free, but the previous version(s) 1.2.x are.

3G vs. edge.

alright so this is the conclusion i have came to.
yes, 3g is faster than edge....
BUT when surfing web on your phone is it really worth it?
i have come to find that when surfing web on my phone i actually prefer to use edge because it is fast enough...and it takes ALOT less of my batter..if i have to download somthing i simply switch to 3g download it...and switch back simple as that...
the only time i really use 3g at all times is when im tethering via wmwifirouter or internet sharing..
just a thought for people who try to conserve battery esp. if you are downloading email every 15 minutes or weather or w.e for that matter
anyone else use this method? post here =)
Same for me, I only use 3G when I need the speed for ICS or Slingbox and then I usually try to be near extra power... For most surfing, email, etc. EDGE is fine.

Yeah but the 3G network is crystal clear for voice too though. Not to mention calls not going to voice mail when using data.

At least for me (using AT&T) Edge is SOOOO slow. I mean it will literally take a minute or more to open a web page. While in the exact same spot, on HSDPA, my web pages load amazingly fast.
I guess maybe it depends on your carrier, or location.

Yes, it's clearly carrier-dependent. With me, EDGE is very fast.

new to the phone! some questions

Hey, i just got my tilt last night and immediately threw on hyperdragon iii pro so much better than the original ATT rom
anyway, just a few quick questions..
1) it used to say 3G AT&T on my today screen, but now it says AT&T, is there anyway i can get the 3G back? I'm connected via hsdpa already
2) how do i make MP3 ringtones louder? there doesn't seem to be any ringer volume setting
3) does anyone have any good games (free or pay - doesn't matter)? my phone feels empty without a good game or two
thanks
1, H is better than 3G. You're connecting to HSDPA.
2, Use another 3rd party application to boost the volume of mp3 and save it to your tilt OR pick another mp3 file.
3, Many games are available from "call of Duty" to "Mine Sweeper". Google it.
1. you can use schaps advanced configurator to set the "3G" back in front of the att text. It will also let you insert a custom text in that position.
mmm thanks for the tips
btw, does staying on HSDPA consume more power than 3G? what about EDGE? will it use more power to keep my phone connected to MEdianet?
"Audacity" is a good one for messing with mp3s, you can boost the volume, chop and change them, etc.
It's a freebie, too:

Not quite sure about "staying on HSDPA consume more power than 3G" because in the area I'm in, H always shown up. On EDGE mode, your tilt will run longer on stanby mode, but less on talk time; with the same juice (err, ... i mean same batt.)
Normally, phone is not always connected to internet unless you tweak it or run some applications which are required to connect to internet e.g skype, IM+ or streaming audio/video. The only bad point about 3G/H so far is you don't know people call you at the time you're connected to internet via MediaNet for example, streaming audio.

How to keep IM apps running

How can I keep applications like skype, IM+, ebuddy etc running for any length of time? Even with settings for always on and no power save, they seem to disconnect after a while, either just after a long time, or immediately after I start using the browser or other applications. And then some, like IM+, wont conenct anymore unless I force close and restart.

Are you using Edge or 3G? As far as I know, without 3G or 3.5G, you can't talk on the phone and keep the internet connection live. YMMV.
Well I have 3G switched on, but the strange thing is that when no 3G signal is available, or it's weak and drops for a bit, then the phone switches to G (gprs) rather than E (edge), or does the phone just not display E?
Having said that, it disconnects the apps regardless of whether I'm using the phone or not

hey there)
firstly about 3G <-> Edge/Gprs switching. literally speaking edge is a piece of hardware equipment embedded into the base station. afaik not every base station has it, so in case you see G that means that either you are served by above mentioned base station or all the channels are occupied by other subscribers which rarely happens nowadays, because carriers expand the capacity of the base stations in order to provide full range of services to their subs. in other words if 3G is not available you would see G or E, you can't manually force your handy to use Edge only, it's an improved version of GPRS so to say
as for the im apps disconnets. i personally use Meebo and it never signs me off. it doesn't matter if i use the phone or switch to other apps. it runs in the background as a service until i choose to sign off manually. give it a try. if it keeps running in the background then maybe Im+ have an option to keep connection alive in its configs. otherwise it can be a bug in the ROM you are using.
Hope it helps
Thanks, I'll give Meebo a try. I guess I found the 3G/G/E thing weird cause the last 2 phones I had did change from one to the other in sequence, so I assumed that this one was skipping a stage, especially as it is slower than my last phone when browsing.

edge/gprs (2G/2.5G) does not allow you to transfer data and to use voice service simultaneously. because it uses the same timeslots as voice does. but it won't disconnect you.
Thanks again for the recommendation, very stable and overall much better than previous apps I've tried for msn. The only few times I was signed off it signed me back in automatically.

[Q] Huge overages? [AT&T]

I just received a huuuge overage charge (running Serendipity 6.2 if that makes a difference); 550mb in one sitting over 3g! As I had the data connection disabled (via holding the power button & deactivating data network), The only thing which I could've possibly done was watch a 20 minute video on the browser, but again I had my 3g disabled and no 3g coverage in the house anyways. Are there **any** red flag apps there? Does disabling data in the power button menu disable all data in & out of the phone via the data network? Are there any apps that would tell me specifically which app is doing what to my data network?
complain! and be glad you are not on a limited plan on verizon! though i miss the iphone plan which apparently i can get back i never exceed 2gig but the $15 a month plan is not for me.
if that happened in 20 minutes then you had the hsdpa connection bassically saturated the entire time. that is not right! complain and if they argue show knowledge, and if they still argue go higher and show knowledge. there must have been some kind of network error. plain and simple.
EDIT: without 3g coverage that is not even posible!
550mb x 1000 = 550,000kb/20min/60sec=458kB/sec x 8bits per bite is 3670kbps that's about 50% theoretical max transfer on att hsdpa. which is greater than typical speeds in many hsdpa areas. with normal 3g you couldnt do it and with edge you couldnt dream about doing it.

is there any possibility of wifi usage statistics being misreported as 3g usage statistics? thank you for the information by the way; will def. call them and complain tomorrow. Also, do you have any specifics on the workings of the powerbutton data disabling feature?

not likely. there is a problem but without knowledge of how the network reports these things i cant know if a problem with the rom is even possible and that's where such a problem would have to be if it were reproting wifi usage by mistake. the network is completely independant of wifi but i dont knw where the stats are recorded.
is the 550 mb for the month? did you have data disabled the whole month? can you be sure it was all at once?
edit: anyhow you have 3g watchdog so there is backup and you have the math which is backup. and i can tell you my typical monthly usage is 500-600mb and i dont take any measures to keep it down my data is always on and my sync is on most of the time. unless im using a rom that drains the battery a bit too fast. my iphone 3g was only using 100mb but i used that phone a lot less but i know 99mb in a month is entirely reasonable if you disabled data.

The 550mb was recorded as one data entry at 1 specific time under my specifics on the AT&T page; data has been disabled every time unless I specifically enabled it to use it (ie checking gmail, various school sites 4-5 times a week at most; I have good wifi connectivity where I go to school & wherever else I might be). The only thing that I had been doing was watching that 20m video over wifi w/ 3g disabled, and no 3g signal (i just went and double checked; i get 0 bars where I sat to watch).
if you are that carefull then the 99mb sounds right. 550 isn't hard to do but if data is disabled then you would know if you used that much.

sorry i dont track my data usage other than my bill. like i said 2gig plan is plenty for me so im not that into keeping tabs.
mms uses data as well. it is just a stupid billing practice that most cell providers subscribe to. it isnt that likly that you used that much texting unless you send images/videos constantly or texts are in the thousands, but it is possible in thoery. and i think texts will be charged as data even if data is off on the phone.

I don't have a texting plan & haven't texted for a while now as email has been sufficient, so I can rule that out.
sounds like you have a legitimate complaint then

Mms travels over the data network but is separated through the billing system to not be charged as data. Text messages don't use data, they are transmitted to a SMSC using SMS transmission that is housed the same way that voicemail is.
