Which Nexus? Opinion? - Off-topic

Well I'm in a delimma here lol. I got a free Nexus from google for a market app, and I'm on AT&T. Of course today, they release a Nexus for AT&T 3G. I was planning on switching to T-Mo when I get it, but now that there is one for AT&T, I wouldn't have to deal with switching, and AT&T has 3G in my area where T-Mo doesn't.
But OTOH, I am getting a free phone
I can't decide, sell the free one on eBay for ~$450-500, then buy the AT&T one, or keep the free one & switch to T-Mo.
On T-Mo I'd save $10 a month, but I wouldn't have 3G here where I do under AT&T. I'm about 10 miles outside the 3G border for T-Mo, but its north toward St. Louis, and I don't go that way often. Selling it is a hassle, but I wouldn't have an ETF.
What do the good people of XDA think?
Anyone have any comparisons between T-Mo & AT&T 3G in the St. Louis area? Signal wise? Speed wise? I know I don't have 3G now under them, but they seem to be expanding the network quickly in my area, seeing how 9 months ago there was no 3G at all, now theres a 50 mi radius of 3G around STL under 2 seperate roll outs, maybe another quick one hopefully? Also, T-Mo is doing 7.2 while AT&T is dragging its feet, plus upcoming HSPA+.
AHH confusion ensues :S lol

Go with tmob since you'll be ready to go with the free N1 for a better plan price.

Go with AT&T
i couldn't imagine not having 3G/HSDPA access.

I have the nexus one with t-mobile and it sucks. I had AT&T before and they are 10x better. I am going to sell my phone and get the at&t version.

nexus one, AT&T VS. T-MOBILE & HSPA+

So ive had my nexus one on AT&T since march and I am very happy with the device. Then I got the text that they changed me to the 30 dollar plan. I dont have a contract anymore too and I can cancel any time I want. Im thinking of switching to T-mobile. I was gonna switch to sprint but changed my mind after I tryed the evo. 3g on sprint sucks and 4g is unreliable and non-existent in NYC yet. Ive heard many problems about the nexus one and the only problem I had on mine was a purple tint when its under 10% brightness. Does the t-mobile nexus one have problems? Is t-mobiles service good in NYC and in Brooklyn? Is hspa+ in NYC and in Brooklyn and how fast is it? I hope the t-mobile nexus one owners can help me out, especially the ones that are in NYC. I hope you guys can help me, Im starting to hate at&t and I love my nexus one
The nexus one was my first phone on t-mobile and I love it. T-mobile is great, their small enough to not be snobby carriers, yet large enough to have large coverage and service. I was an ATT'er before and I will never go back I love t-mobile, and their cheaper on average. As for NYC I cant really help you as Im a Vegas guy but cheers and good luck either way.
here is a thread that i just read, not sure how credible it is because I am not in NYC but this is a guy you may wanna have a chat with.
sorry cant find the thread anymore.
From what my cousin tells me, he is in Rockaway Township, NJ, He has very fast HSPA.
here is a bit of information that came up doing a search
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=6454391
The Nexus does max out at 7.2mbps though so thats the absolute fastest you will get. Not to shabby IMHO
Re: nexus one, AT&T VS. T-MOBILE
You can't beat using T-Mobile, as their coverage and plans are greater than decent in the us . I've been with them for four years and wont be turning back any time soon. I don't do cdma and att has bad plans now. Im in Boston and go to BK and Manhattan, NYC often. I get great coverage there.
I was just in Manhattan with my T-mobile N1 and I found the coverage to be great. Didn't do any speed tests but got HSPA+ all the way. I'm sure ultimately ATT coverage is better but like the other poster said, T-Mobile is cheaper and their customer service is awesome. If you stick to the urban areas nationally you'll be pretty happy with T-mo service. If you're travelling in less populated areas you may find coverage lacking. That's what I've found anyway.
hspa+
how fast is hspa+ on the nexus one in Manhattan and in Brooklyn,NY? Im thinking about switching from my nexus on att and I wanna know how fast it is. In Brooklyn i get avg of 2 mbps and 2.9 mbps in manhattan. I have had peaks of 3.5 mbps. Also, does the tmobile nexus one have lots of problems, like 3g connectivity, cause on my att nexus, the only pproblem i had was a purple tint when under 10 percent brightness. Hope u guys can help me out

mets3214 do you know how to find forum topic discussions (aka threads) you've created already? if not we can help you out with that so you don't create 3 of basically the same topic. Also a good idea is to choose a title for your thread relevant to what you want to talk about. IE better title might be "HSDPA+ in NYC Area?", "Do these speed tests mean I have HSDPA+ in my area (NYC)?".
merged 'hspa+' to this thread to reduce duplication.
I am in Manhattan, I just did the speedtest with T-Mobile connection, average 3mb down and 1.2mb up. I live in Brooklyn with no drop call and the service is very reliable.
You are aware that if you go to T-Mobile with your AT&T Nexus you'll only get EDGE, right? They use different frequencies for 3G. You would need a different model of the Nexus to get 3G on T-Mobile.
I have been with Tmobile for almost two years and four years before that. I have tried Sprint and AT&T and have gone back to Tmobile two times. AT&T thier service is the worst, those commercials with the orange coverage maps - the orange on those maps show where thier service does not work. I live about 16 miles outside of Phoenix, AZ and with AT&T my service never worked at home. AT&T promised that they were going to put in a tower close to us that would allow us service but it was all lies. OK maybe not lies but it was taking to long. Tmobile works very well at my house can at times get a great connection and it appears thier Tech support that actually knows what they are doing. I am glad I have TMobile, service wise - Price wise it is comparable but still a little pricey for android phones with having to pay for the 30 dollar unlimited android web.

Nexus One...At&t or T-Mobile?

Hey guys i just had a few questions for the nexus one users out there..by the way i am finally giving in and deciding to buy a nexus one!! I waited and waited to see if there were going to be any better phones coming out, but for some reason the nexus one just calls my name, its a perfect phone.
Anyways my dad has current service with at&t (the $60 individual plan) and i am pretty sure he already completed his two year contract. I was thinking of adding a line to his account and purchase a nexus one to use with it. My question was if i were to buy the n1, would there need to be a requirement to establish a new contract?
Also in your personal opinions, is the n1 better on the at&t or t-mobile network?
Thanks i cant wait to get the phone!

No. It's $529... then you just add the line to your service. The only time you would have to start a new contract with the phone is if you opt for the $179 deal through T-Mobile (AT&T doesn't have a deal like that).

Depends on where you live and what you want.
T-Mobile is the only provider that allows you to have a smart phone on a non-contract plan without requiring you pay for a data package. So if you have steady access to WiFi, it really isn't worth paying extra for data, and using Google Voice for free unlimited texting means that T-Mobile is by far the cheapest non-contract option.
AT&T generally has better overall 3G/coverage nationwide (they certainly do where I live in Utah), but if you go non-contract with them, you still have to pay for data.
T-Mobile is rolling out HSPA+ all over the USA, and people are reporting 6-7mbps speeds. Check out androidforums.com/nexus-one
If I were you, and if data/3G was important, I'd check your local AT&T retailers and have them show you speed tests.
It seems in general ATT nexus users don't have signal issues like the t-mobile nexus users often have. But that's just a general observation. It all depends on your specific area.
Me personally, ATT will have stronger service cause ATT uses 850 and 1900 mhz, where t-mobile uses 1700/2100 mhz. So ATT's 850 is much stronger signal penetration and range. I think this is partially why t-mobile users get that flaky 3g issue. But also ATT 3g has a head start on coverage over t-mobile, so they will catch up eventually.
...and the nexus one would be subject to follow the new data usage rules for at&t right? I think its 250 mb for $15 and 2 gb for $25.
Hmm ok, i do want to go with the cheapest option here and it sounds like if i go ahead and try out t-mobile they will eventually upgrade to hspa+ network...
Does the upgraded network on t-mobile mean that current 3g phones (like the nexus one) would be able to use it?
current tmobile 3g phones (including N1) are already ready for the hspa+
i sell tmo and att (amongst other carriers) i also have both carriers. the high speeds you can get on the tmo hspa+ are nice, but inconsistent.
go AT&T. pay a little more, but have a far better network.
Get T-Mobile service if you can get 3G service where you are.
i would vote for at&t. one of my buddy's using t-mo, and as mentioned before inconsistent with their network
I am on AT&T and T-Mobile gave me a free phone with unlimited free service which I stopped using because the audio quality was horrible and people kept complaining how bad it sounded.
I vote AT&T.
if you travel, tmobile really doesnt work outside metro areas and highways. just food for thought. at&t works in more rural areas as well. I dont have any issues with my at&t nexus, dont know about the tmobile version. Mine is for sale if you are interested, I need the money towards importing a phone at retail. Pm me if you are interested.
Okay thanks for all the help!

Philadelphia, PA Owners

I'm interested to know what carrier / pre-paid option you chose & how your voice service & data performance is.
I might make the jump come next year, I'm patient enough to hold out for a 32GB version (I have a feeling it'll come Q1 2013). :fingers-crossed:
I'm worried about chooing T-Mobile, I don't know anyone on T-Mobile but their HSPA+ is tempting as is getting a better data deal
However AT&T seems to be proven but the people who I knew that had AT&T have either switched to Sprint or Verizon.
Your help is appreciated.
Thanks.
Edit: This forum is too active
I use T-mobile. I've been happy with both their voice and data service for years now - I switched when the G1 came out.
If you go camping/etc you'll probably run into coverage issues. However, in the Philadelphia suburbs you're not going to have problems, beyond the rare issue in a building or whatever that everybody has. I've found the coverage map on their website to be accurate - it has a google-maps-like interface and you can see coverage down to the street level.
Definitely get an unsubsidized plan. With monthly payments if you buy a phone from them it is no more expensive than the subsidized plans anyway. However, it gives you the flexibility to go elsewhere for your gear or update on your own schedule penalty-free. Obviously paying $350 for a Nexus 4 makes a lot more sense than paying $600 for the exact same device.
Compared to Verizon or ATT you'll save buckets of cash.
I'd say go att if you plan on going to south jersey. Edge sucks.

T-mobile for the past 6 years in Philly and surrounding areas. I really can't complain. I have the occasional issue in a particular building or someone's house but I'm paying $50/mo. Their service has gradually become better year after year. I would definitely recommend.
I'm on AT&T in the Philadelphia area, and their HSPA+ here is sloooowwww. I'm lucky if I get 2-4mbps. The coverage is great (I switched from Verizon, and AT&T is much better in the areas that I frequent) but the speed is meh. Still much better than 3G, but nothing like the speeds I've heard of from T-mobile.
T-Mobile value here. The shore and poconos are much spottier than AT&T but delco, at least, is better. I never really did any wireless speed tests to compare.
the ~$600 a year savings made it a no brainer for me.
I'm out in Montgomery County and have been on Straight Talk AT&T for a while. Just got my new sim for ST T-Mobile. All I did was call them and gave them the new SIM PIN and within an hour or so, all was done. Costs 48/month with all unlimited, throttling data after 2GBs? I don't use that much data so I'm not sure. Coverage for AT&T was fine, but data speeds were slow. T-Mobile is already giving me about double the speeds: 6741kpbs down 2211kbps up. I'm guessing it'll be faster when I'm in the city. The SIM cards only cost ~10 bucks with free overnight shipping. I'd say go with ST if you don't need over 2GBs of data and then you can try both and be totally content with your decision.
Didn't think T-Mobile would get the nod here. I do work in Center City West so I was worried about the building I'm in and around me. But I have to remember I'm ok, given I'm not tied down.

[Q] HTC One on ATT or Tmobile?

I am currently on ATT with the Samsung Galaxy S III and I was thinking about switching to TMobile since they have unlimited data and also because ATT has the locked bootloader. The problem is, I am scared of switching to a new service provider. I tried asking around the office and I can't find ANYONE that has TMobile (At least not in the past year or two).
So my question is for people who currently have TMobile. How is the coverage? The speed? There isn't LTE here for TMobile but there is for ATT but I read that the 3.5g that TMobile has is pretty fast.
Any advice either way?
P.S. Please don't go out of your way bashing the other carriers, I am just asking to help me pick the best network for myself and my HTC One. If you have had both carriers, feel free to comment on both. But if you haven't had ATT, please don't bash it (and vice versa)
Once again, if you have had TMobile in the past year or so, please let me know what you think of it.
Thanks
Rob
AT&T HTC One running on T-Mobile 3G. My town finally got refarmed the phone constantly bounces around EDGE, H, and H+ = Battery Drain
But the speeds are pretty impressive, well compared to EDGE. I can literally walk around the house and have it switch between Data Speeds.
Coverage within the City is constant full bars, but now that they started refarming the area it's spotty 3G. For me though it's worth it. AT&T in my area has better coverage when it comes to the suburban areas, but the prices do not compare T-Mobile wins hands down.

It all depends on where you live. If you have service nothing is better value than T-Mobile in my opinion.
Well in my opinion I have had t mobile, Verizon and at&t. It all comes down to service I get 20-50 mbps on art lte constantly, T-Mobile can be iffy from time to time if in a rural area and well the price if unlimited plus the price of paying for the phone each month comes close to att. The one thing over the years I have learned is loyalty can go a long way and when your needing that upgrade early it does pay off being with your provider for a while. I hope this helps out and this is just an opinion of mine.
Btw the bootloader is unlockable for att

Tmobile of you got good coverage in your area.
I am in the same boat, I've had Tmobile in the past and while the customer service is 10x better than AT&T I could never stick with them due to coverage being an issue. However, the area has recently been upgraded and coverage seems to be much better so I think I'm going to switch soon. Not to mention AT&T stopped offering military discount, while Tmo has the best military discount of any carrier.
Yeah, it really depends where you live. Minneapolis area has great coverage. I plan on switching back to them in June (currently on AT&T).
Don't be afraid of T-Mobile...
Sent from my HTC One X
So I ended up buying 2 HTC Ones from TMobile, they put a hold on my bank account for 300 dollars and then they cancelled the order. I called them to ask them what was up and they said they are cancelling all HTC One pre-orders that are placed because of an IT issue where the processing system doesn't think any HTC Ones are in stock.
But they are letting the system hit my credit to check if I can get the phone and they are charging my bank account even though they know the system will cancel the order at the end.
That along with the fact I'm not quite sure how good coverage/speed is in Toledo, OH has made my mind up. I'm staying with AT&T.
Thanks everyone for your input

Your just the guy I'm looking for. I'm currently on att with the HTC ONE, but thinking about going to tmobile's prepaid $30 plan. The coverage in Charlotte NC looks good, but I'm not exactly sure because I haven't used it. However, $30 is a great savings. While your out and about, your getting hspa +? But it switches constantly between hspa + and edge?

Should I leave Sprint for T-Mobile?

Hello guys,
I've been with sprint for about 20 yrs and I'm thinking about leaving because the promise of better coverage and LTE has been lack luster. I would like to hear from you guys on Tmobile if you like their service, do you get good LTE and are they still throttling data?
The only reason I'm still with sprint is because I think they offer the best in monthly options with their prices, never had a bad customer experience and real unlimited data for $20 with Tmobile I see that's at $45
So for those who switch to T-mobile are you happy and anything to look out for when dealing with T-mobile?
Thanks for any input
I left Sprint for T-mobs least year and haven't looked back. Prices are actually cheaper and was pleasantly surprised to go to Europe and found I had data and texting for no additional fee. The JUMP! program is pretty nice as well. Really it comes down to your location and who has more towers in the area.
And we, Canadians, are paying C$40 for 300MB per month... *cries internally* *cries externally* *cries uncontrollably with jealousy*
I have been on Tmo for quite some time. I like it. Not as good of coverage as Verizon and maybe Sprint when you get up in northern Minnesota but then again when I am off exploring in the north I don't wish to be constantly tethered.

I had sprint for 6 years and switched to tmobile when I got the s6. T-Mobile was working better indoors than sprint. Plus having GSM in my opinion is better than CDMA because you can just pop the sim into another device.
Sent from my SM-G925T using Tapatalk
Depends on your coverage area. I'm a 10 year TMO customer and I live in the Los Angeles area. My reception SIGNIFICANTLY improved when I got my S6, which is my first band 12 phone. I used apps like LTE Discovery to monitor when my phone switches from band 4 (TMO's old LTE band) to band 12. I found my phone stays in band 4 most of the time. My band 4 reception is significantly better. I work in the center of a office building (no windows), where I got no reception with my old Galaxy S4. Now (on band 4) I get perfect reception for calls, text, and data. TMO really improved their LTE service.
I went from Verizon to tmoblile in may of last year. I'm in NJ so both really have great coverage but the WiFi calling was the deal breaker along with a gsm network.
Sent from my SM-G920T using Tapatalk
YES.
It really depends on where you live.
Believe it or not, Sprint actually has some really good service areas.
I just have never lived in one. Tmo kicks their butt in my area.
Edit: I never had bad signal from Sprint here. But I could have full bars of LTE, and still only get 2-6KB/s of data. The only way to get Sprint to work here was to force roam on VZW.
T-Mobile just got crap load of new towers so yeah come to T-Mobile. It's been perfect for me for a few years now. Left Sprint for T-Mobile.

I switched around the middle of last year. I miss Verizon's network strength. I've had a lot of issues with Tmobile's coverage. They seem to be more concerned with marketing and building a consumer base than investing in infrastructure.
I left verizon for t-mobile a couple of years ago and haven't looked back. If you live in and don't often leave a metropolitan area, tmobile's coverage is really good. I got on the $30 prepaid Walmart plan. 100 mins, unlimited text and data with the first 5GB at 4G. http://www.walmart.com/ip/39081494. Google $30 Walmart tmobile plan for more info.

I haven't really noticed that, some areas verizon has better coverage and in other T-Mobile is better. But in most cases both networks I would have full bars lte.
