ok heres my problem. i dont have internet atm. i am using cyanogen. i have my phone connected to wifi that i am picking up of a nearby router... i tethered that to my pc.
everything works great. have about 5mb down and 1 mb up.
as soon as i try to run utorrent it works for a few min then bam connection gone. and the wifi on the g1 crashes or something and i have to reboot the phone.
i tried limiting the the upload bandwidth to 1 kb/s. it seems when i open firefox while utorrent is running it floods the connection somehow. i dont know what to do. only thing i can think of is that there are to many connections coming into the phone and it cant handle it...
any thoughts?
basically i just want to be able to run utorrent and a stable speed without crashing the tethered connection
Same thing happens to me on a high speeds connection, I would get anywhere from 80-xxxxmb and it would just crash at random. This wasn't through torrents but just regular HTTP/FTP downloads with 2-4 congruent connections.
It didn't happen when I was house sitting for my grandma who has 1mb down.
I found that the program PDAnet worked better for high speed connections.
I agree with your theory about the phone getting stuck with the flood of incoming connections causing the crash.
i also tried limiting the download speed of the torrent seemed to work ok for a while i was able to get half a movie downloaded. then the connection just crashed.
I ll try pdanet. i just dont want to pay for the full app, if there is something i could tweak using the built in tether option for cyanogen
I doubt it, I tried all the settings and it still crapped out.
A $10 USB dongle is worth it if it means that much to you. I use a dd-wrt enabled router now instead of my phone, just needed something in the interim while I was getting everything set with the router.

I have seen a new app, that is not yet available for Android. There is an alpha version for Android , given to some testing people, including me. Till now the alpha only supports usb but Wifi and Bluetooth will follow.
I will report...
PDAnet has been one of the most popular software for Windows Mobile phones and Palm OS phones. It is now ported to the iPhone! The latest version turns your iPhone into a true WiFi router for your computer (MAC or PC), and allows your laptop to go online wirelessly through the 3G network on the iPhone. New! Version 1.50 adds USB support for Windows users.
While there has been quite a few other third party software (iPhoneModem, NetShare etc. and also the built-in OpenSSH) that tether your iPhone through a junky SOCKS proxy solution. PdaNet, on the other hand, is miles ahead! This version is called "PdaNet WiFi Router", it literally is. All you need to do is simply to create an ad-hoc WiFi network on the computer and connect your iPhone to it (instructions). Your computer then goes online automatically. There is no need to specify IP (or any other) settings on either end.
Full list of PdaNet benefits:
* You will get FULL Internet access on the computer! (Instead of only applications that support Socks proxy.) In technical terms, all applications make direct TCP/IP connections to the server. Since there is no proxy involved, that also means less problems and less delays.
* VPN connections are supported on the computer.
* You don't need to configure anything on the computer end whenever you connect PdaNet. No proxy settings, no extra software installation, no messing with static IP assignment, no switching settings back and forth when going back to your home's WiFi router.
* Yes it will connect at 3G speed if your phone has the coverage.Feedback from our users shows pretty fast speed even for the 2G version.
* Supports PC, MAC, Linux or anything (include other PDA/phones) that connects to a WiFi router.
* PdaNet runs in the background so you can still use other iPhone features when PdaNet is connected. But when you are done with them, go back to PdaNet to prevent the phone from entering idle and drops your connection.
* PdaNet has a built-in "insomnia" feature so you can turn off the phone when PdaNet is in the foreground and it won't drop your active connection. This will conserve battery.
* It is recommended that you charge the phone at the same time while using PdaNet because both WiFi and 3G will be put on full speed, both consume a lot of juice.

Hook a brother up you tease!!! Just kidding, I think. Unless you really wanna hook me up!
You got any idea of a release date?
Sounds great thanks for the tip, hopefully it will come soon sure would make tethering easy !
till now it looks like installing and there you go. no telnet - su -....
This is exactly the app I've been waiting for. No root wireless wifi tethering. Please bring more good news and keep us updated with the findings
I had been given a testing version in December as well, but unfortunately it's Windows-only at this point. =/
June Fabrics PDANET for G1
Hi,
I just received an invite from June-Fabrics last night for their alpha testing. I am able to access the internet through a USB Based connection using their software.
It is pretty ugly right now. but it works.
It appears that the connecitons are possibly throttled a little bit for testing purposes as I am able to browse pages as expected, but there are no images or graphics being displayed.
As this is my first connection, I am going to perform some additional tests and I will write my updates as I come across them.
Have a good day
please
OMG HURRY!!!!!!!!!!! I just wanna use my phone the way it should which is ocassionally to tether it to my Laptop!
Current tether with g1

This tether application rocks. It also has bluetooth. I am getting around 700.
bummer
im currently leaving my phne stock as i see no benefit to tohaving root acess. Ill wait for an opensource app
AndroidActivity's Wi-Fi and Bluetooth tethers work wonderfully.

You need to look harder if you're not seeing the benefit...
This is a 2-part dilemma...
1.) is there a way to use my Wi-fi and data plan as a gateway for internet access with the computers in my home? I want to be able to turn on the Wi-fi, and the phone will become an access point and its internet connection comes from my data plan... I guess this can be done with a T-mobile G1.
2.) the way I do it now is that I hook it up via USB to a computer, and that works pretty well. Problem is, if I disconnect it via software function on the phone or just yank the USB plug out, I have to re-boot my phone before the internet sharing will work again. This gets annoying. Anyone else experience this and/or know if there's a fix?
Or am I just dumb and want everything on a silver platter?
are these computers connect in a network. I am sure it can easily be done by internet connection sharing just have all the computers connect to your pc for a connection.
I thought about doing that--basically an internet share to an internet share. That WOULD work, but I was hoping for something a bit simpler. i am not a hardcore computer user like I was back in the day where I had to have at least 3 computers running 24/7 in order to cope with life. LOL. I was hoping for a setup where I can just walk in the door from a crappy day at work, plug my phone into the charger where it gets its best signal, and just leave it there and the rest will take care of itself. I am close to being able to do that with my Xlink bluetooth cellular gateway. Once I am home, there's no reason why I have to carry my phone around the house, as my hard-wired phones in the house ring through my cellular and I can make calls from them
The other option is to quit being a cheap turd and get a $30/mo internet connection for my computers, which is faster than the EDGE service I get here at home. But I live alone and don't download big stuff anymore or play multiplayer games, etc
I think the concept in question is one that has been batted around here for some time: Can the Kaiser be used as an access point with an internet connection?
As far as anyone's been able to tell, no. The phone's wifi chip(or part of a chip that does wifi) would need to support AP mode (access point mode) where in it receives and routes multiple wifi connections' data between each other and the GPRS hardware. As far as anyone's been able to tell, the wifi capabilities in the phone are limited to single-connection only, so allowing multiple devices to connect (or even 1, unless the desired device can get internet via adhoc or bluetooth) is not possible.
You can use the WiFi connection sharing. What it does is take your EDGE or 3G connection and set your phone up as an "access point". I put that in parenthesis because it creates an "ad-hoc" network that only certain devices can detect and connect to. Ad-Hoc is a device to device network, where the normal is infrastructure mode. Also being the device it is, I'm not sure if it's going to be an intelligent network device, IE.. iTunes music sharing between local connected clients. But you can most certainly share your connection with your laptops or desktops if they have WiFi. I'll see if I can find the cab for you and post it here.
EDIT: Here you go... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4175565&postcount=90
Cool. I will look into that! I pretty much only have one computer running at a time these days, and the EDGE connection isn't all that fast to be sharing it among multiple computers anyway.
why...
Hi,
Not sure if i understand... why would someone use the "crappy" internet connection of a phone to get internet access to your home network...
It's 2009. Why not get a decent cable or DSL account

$ 30.00 for your phone data connection + $ 45.00 for your home cable/DSL connection = $75.00 per month, as opposed to just $30.00 for both.
To some people $ 45 dollars a month is a lot of money to save no matter how slow the connection is.
I am no expert but I found this software here a while ago and really liked it. There is an older version that is legally free but the new one is pay, try the trial.

Or you're like me and cant get anything but satellite internet where I live, which is way more expensive. Yet I get 3G just fine =)
WMWifiRouter
I like WMWifiRouter pretty well. It drains my battery like crazy, but when I have my phone plugged in, it's okay. Without being plugged in, my battery loses about 20% over ten minutes. Also, the free version doesn't really come with any admin features. The router is public and there's no way to see who's connected. Other than that, it's great!
since updateing to FRF83, wifi tether seems to have been slowed down.
has this been done to keep american networks happy?
Can anyone else verify this? I'll check when I get home... but that would suck.
I just tested it. I can not confirm this issue. My tether speeds are as fast as they always are.
No issues at all here, worked great!
Same here, my WiFi tether speeds are right in line with my N1's 3G speed tests.
well my tether is working but my hotspot is not... >: l
Everything is happy happy joy joy on my end
WiFi Tethering not Changed
No changes have been made to the WiFi tether however your speeds can be hindered by network traffic and a number of other issues. Even a microwave oven near by will interfere with speeds or something as simple as an application checking for updates in the background on your computer.
Best thing, try again at another time or location. It helps to test often to get an idea of the fastest speeds you may see, when and where you got the best results.
I had this problem as well. Here's what I did that fixed it:
Change the security to Open. After that, try to connect to your phone. If you're able to connect, change back to WPA and it should work.
I noticed that the password I set before the update had quotes around it, so I wonder if that was the problem...
I've got an AT&T n1 and I am using it with Vodacom in Tanzania. I'm now running frf83 and internet on my phone works but I am unable to tether. The computer can see the hotspot and connect, but there are DNS problems. My tech friend helped me but he was unable to make it work and concluded that he could ping the internet fine but DNS wouldn't work, not even open DNS. I dunno, anyone have this problem or know a fix? I would be grateful.

I'm using open and it still doesn't work but thanks for your help.
Im stock and on tmobile and its working great for me, hooked my buddy's iphone just now to test it
It does not work with me . i tried on FRF50 work fine but on FRF83 no wifi at all
Does not work for me ether
I even factory reset my phone but wifi tether doesn't work, something to do with DNS.
Hey guys, I'm a long time lurker, first time thread-starter, and I hope there is a simple solution to this.
This is more of a proof-of-concept question, and since the PS3 is capable of connecting to a tethering application I figured an XB could as well.
Recently, I updated my Captivate's ROM to the SREv1.3.1c (it was the ROM before he renamed it to Cognition). One of the added benefits was the addition of the Mobile Access POint, which is way better than PDANet in my opinion, but I digress.
Anyway, I've managed to turn the AP on and get it to connect to a PS3 with no issues and very little lag, which was awesome. However, the XBox is being a pain in the ***. i can go to my network connections on the XB, and my wireless attachment "sees" the connection just fine. It also connects and pulls both a IP and DNS server address. I even get 5 bars of great signal.
But when I run a XBL test, when it tries to connect to the internet it craps the bed and does nothing. Now, I've seen people get XBL to connect over similar tethering apps, even PDANet with its shaky connection issues, but I can't seem to figure this one out. As far as I can tell, maybe 3G has too high of a latency to be compatable, but I figured I'd ask the experts of XDA. Can anyone help?
Did I forget to say please or something? Any pointers?
Hey just wondering what is your configuration. like are you connecting with wi-fi from the phone, do you have a laptop to use? that is one of the easiest ways. or are you just usb direct into the console?
Well presently I'm using MobileAP which broadcasts a wifi signal that my laptop can pick up (it's how I'm typing this at the moment as well). It can be seen, like I said, but the XB won't get past the internet part of the diagnostic test.
I also had PDAnet installed a while ago so I know how to usb tether but couldnt get that to work on XBL either.
I have been having issues where i am connected to the wifi but the device stops passing any traffic. I have fing installed and i can't ping any other devices on my network. I know its just my phone because i have my work phone and tablet connected to the wifi and they still work fine browsing webpages, watching movies etc while the droid turbo can no longer communicate with the local lan or out to the internet. If i switch the wifi off then on again it will reconnect and then work normally. I can then ping devices on the local lan and access pages on the internet. This has happened a number of times now since i got the device.
Edit: I just updated the phone and still get the issue. I have a cisco WAP at home, we have cisco WAP's at work which i will test tomorrow. If this thing still has issues i am just going to swap it out for a Note 4.
Check this out:

I've been seeing issues with Cisco wlans too.
Sent from my XT1254 using XDA Free mobile app
so it looks like it works good at work, something with my home cisco ap and this phone as all other devices at home work ok.

Yeah this phone does not seem to like my router for some reason. Keep in mind I'm not a networking expert, but I've tried every combination of options and settings every which way from Sunday and I just can't get the thing to work. When I do connect the phone to my wifi it kills the the connection on every device in the house. At first I though it was just a wireless thing, but even the downstairs computer which is plugged in directly to the router doesn't work. Then as soon as I disconnect the phone every device works again. I thought maybe there was too many devices, so I disconnected all but the downstairs computer, still had the issue when I connected the Turbo. I've tried just turning off the WPA2 and just having an open system, I've tried connecting the phone using a WPS pin (This one actually worked for a good 5 minutes before crapping out and hasn't worked since). On the advanced options of the phone I tried an automatic IP as opposed to the default DHCP setting (This also worked for a good 5 minutes before not working ever again). I've tried limiting it to just one frequency band. I have tried so many different things and I just cannot make this phone work on my router. And I know it's my router because the phone works fine at work.
phone: Droid Turbo
Router : Asus rt-ac66r
yup within ten minutes of getting home, the device no longer passes traffic. My work S5 still works fine at home and so does my samsung tablet. The device worked on wifi all day at work on our enterprise wpa2 network no issues. I tried doing static ip at home, changing to 2.4 ghz, trying new ssid. Not sure what else to do with this thing...
Not just you
I posted a comment on Motorola's forum where people are discussing their wifi issues... And my work around. I currently beleive its a software issue and can be fixed via update. Also, today I found (it appears) that the longer the phone goes without a reboot, the shorter amount of the it appears to go with out needing the wifi card reset.

My work around fix...
First, over night my wifes phone now behaves just like mine. It now connects to wifi and after sometime passes it no longer passes data (but stays connected). I needed a way to auto disable/enable the card... I installed Tasker. I have it set to check every 15 minutes, if the phone is connected to WiFi, to disable then enable the WiFi card. I use WifiMatic to enable the wifi card when the phone is connected to the cellular tower that is near my house. (Doing this by GPS uses more battery power...) Using Tasker with the rule to verify its connected to wifi first helps not enabling wifi if its nit needed and lets WifiMatic enable/disable it as needed.
