Amons Recovery and Apps2sd - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am sorry for being the billionth person to ask this. But how the hell do you do this? I need a way to do this with out using the sdk thing. I am running the Ubuntu SuperD rom, found here on this site. If i need to switch to the the CM i can if it is easer to do so. Your help would be much appreciated. I have tried to do this soooo many times, Also if once i get apps2sd working. if i switch between roms, all my apps will still be on my sd and i don't have to reinstall anything right?

How do you do what? Setup Apps2SD? Or do you need help flashing Amon's recovery? Or what?
Apps2SD is automatic. You just need an ext partition. Instructions for Amon's recovery are in his thread. There are also instructions for creating an ext partition, on this forum and elsewhere, if you just use the search feature. If you really need help, and can't find it, ask--but not here. Questions go in the Q(estion)&A section. If you ask them here, a mod will lock the thread before we can properly answer it. So, go search, read, search some more, then post in the right forum.

The aps2sd. When i download new apps they go in the internal mem. How do i automatically save them to SD? My internal mem 70.10 mb

apparently you cant read
so long as you have a CUSTOM rom such as CM and an EXT2,3, or 4 partition on the SD card, it gets done automatically with all future apps

New SD Card (what to do)...

So i ordered a new Class 6 SD Card.
Before this i was on the stock 1GB SD card that came with the G1 with an ext2 partition, and running the latest Cyan mod.
Basically i was just wondering what i need to do when my new card comes. I know i need to partition it to FAT32, and then i was gonna do ext3, and a linux swap. Can i just use sdparted script to do this?
And finally i was gonna try a Hero rom now that i have the SD card that is actually capable of running it. I push it with adb and just flash after partitioning, right?
Is there any way of getting my apps back or am i going to have reinstall everything again? I don't REALLY mind doing all over again, but it'd be nice not to have to. And if it's possible, how?
Thanks for any help/clarification...
dear ally,
there is a app that allows you to back up apps..
p.s. i apologize im not a native speaker..of how do u say..umm ur motherlan
Yes.
First re-partition the card using parted from the recovery menu or using the Amon-Ra Recovery. There are instructions for that littered everywhere in the Q&A and the Developer's forum, just use the search.
To use the Hero ROMs you need to flash the Danger SPL unless you plan on using MicroHero with HardSPL. If you want to use any of the new Hero ROMs they will require the Danger SPL and note the bold. Look up the proper instructions for flashing the SPL before actually diving in.
And no. You don't need to re-install everything. Just use switchrom or BART to make a backup as it will also make a backup of your ext partition. After backing up, just restore it after transferring everything from the FAT32 partition of your old sdcard to the new one.
I just checked and i have 1.33.2005 SPL. I believe that's the correct one, right?
I just tried to push Bart to system/sd...i'm pretty sure i did it right but when i try to store my ext it says it can't open the file.
What am i doing wrong?

Thank you very much...that seems to have worked
I really like this recovery image too
No problem man, glad to have helped.
Download Amon_Ra's new recovery image and look for the 3 way partition option...once partioned, do a data wipe, drag and drop your rom of choice in .zip format onto the root of your sd card and rename it to "update"
Backup for Root users works well for restoring your apps. it can be found in the marketplace. I believe there is a donate version and a free version.

My G1 hung

Hello,
I have problem with my G1.
Sometimes when someone call me phone just start to vibrate and that's all You can't answer or close the phone.... You can't don nothing. And I need to remove the battery cause there is no other chance. And of course after the reboot there is nothing in the call log.
So is there someone who know what is going on or some chance to find a resolution of this because is very annoying.
Thank you in advance.
Regards
hi
well have you tried to wipe reset and/or flash another rom
Well I'm using Cyanogen 4.25 and I have made partitions but I don't know how to wipe partition with all the programs. I have 3 partitions - one swap, one for programs and my rest of the card.
But I haven't try any other roms. Well I was using before JF but this was before cyanogen so ....
What rom will you recommend me to try? Something stable I mean.
P.S Sorry for my stupid questions but I'm kind a lame with that phone.
Hi,
You might want to post this in the Q&A sub forum instead on in the DEV section.
You are more likely to get some help there.
thanks!
Either try difrent rom and see if the problem stops or u can unroot ur phone and call t-mobile
Well I can unroot my phone but I can't call T-mobile because I'm in Bulgaria and my phone is from UK .....
Will try to put other rom but will you recommend some?
!!!!!!
Gaaahhh!! It's a full-blown takeover!
This forum is for Android development! That's why it's called "Dream Android development!!!!"
Questions go in the Question&A forum!!!
MOD EDIT - Reduced size of text. No need for large text.....In my eyes this is just as bad as posting in wrong forum!!!
Here I go... reboot into recovery, wipe your data, wipe your ext partition, flash cyanogen's rom again. Cyanogen's is the most stable rom out there (possibly more stable than stock Android), so I'd recommend doing a wipe (including SD) and trying it again. But really, please ask in the right forum. It seems we get another question thread in this forum every ten minutes, and it really clutters it up and gets in the way of the real work going on here.
Wow!!! Sorry for the post here didn't know that will be so mad people ...
You can move my theme to Q&A sections if is nessesary.
But how can I wipe my SD card with lose any of the partitions? As I told you I'm noob (was able to make partitions by my own but now I don't know what to do)
Thanks for the answers and sorry again.

A mod will move this thread soon, but they are overwhelmed moving them all. It's becoming a hassle.
If you are using RA's recovery, there is an option in the menu to wipe your ext partition. I don't remember if the latest Cyanogen+JF recovery has that option or not. If you don't have it, then use gparted from a live cd, or use sdparted on your phone, to repartition. There are a lot of guides to this on these forums, if you search. (note that wiping ext will delete your apps, but repartitioning will erase all your files as well as your apps, so be sure to back up)
hi
boot your phone into recovery you know home and power ant the go to terminal and hit enter then enter this
parted /dev/block/mmcblk0
print
there is a portion that is like 500mb and you need to redo that partition it should be #2 so hit
rm 2mkpartfs primary ext2 3437 3937(depending on the size of your sd card)
MOD EDIT - Moved to Q&A forum. In future please abide by forum rules and post in correct forum. Little Tip, read title of forum and ask yourself is my question related to this.

What this do?!
Just now I have wiped all the ext, cache and reflashed the cyanogen mod. Will tell you if this issue appears again.
It happened to me once
I was playing music and playing a game then some one called and the phone hung
I also had to clock it up to 528MHz instead of 384MHz so it can play music and run the game smoothly
I just thought maybe the old G1 couldn't handle the load

Rooted G1 with Cyanogen... only 14 MB internal Memory left?

Ok Guys, new to this site, hopefully y'all can help me out.
I recently rooted my G1, Installed the latest Cyanogen (4.7.2.1) and installed a theme ( Marks Theme). I dont have very many apps cause I didnt want to bog down the phone memory.....
I love the set up but it started running slower even after I started running the over clocker widget.
My phone is only showing 14.18 MB of free internal memory. I went through my applications installed and can only find around 25 MB being used from all installed apps ( including browser and messaging etc.)
I even tried to do a factory reset ( by going through the settings) and the factory reset is not working. It changed nothing.
Is there something that Im missing? I feel like I should have much more free memory.
I love the way my phone works and the set up, I just wish it had more free memory so that it would run faster.
Ive thought about doing the Apps2SD but I feel like I chould have much more memory on my phone even before doing something like that.
PLEASE HELP!!!!!!
This is a question, and as such belongs in the Q&A section. You'll receive a better response to such things there.
The internal memory you're referring to is your /system partition.
It is where the entire OS is stored, basically. Which takes up, in your case, a whopping 55 MB (out of 70 MB).
If you //really// want more room, follow the Apps-2-SD tutorials out there. You'll get /plenty/ of space.
You could always upgrade to the new amon ra and then let it partition the sd card for you. Then you can have all that free phone storage for whatever it is.Bext time just try to restrict yourself from posting in wrong section
-Best regards

Thank you for the quick response. Is there a way to move this thread?
Also is there a better ROM that will take up less memory? I like this version but obviously it is wayy to large.
Anyone else running cyanogen 4.7.2.1 having this issue?
Most people using the Cyanogen ROM also utilize A2SD. Partition your SD card and you'll get more room.

There is no issue, you just don't have an ext partition ergo, all applications are installed to your phone which is why you have low phone memory.

Hello! app2SD will put the apps to ext...Then you will have more memory, why do you think people use it? To save even more money on geico?
Go here for the amon recovery...

Hi, first of this has nothing to do with development, should be in Q&A. Please remember for next time
OK, when you're on a custom ROM, don't use factory reset. Instead boot in to the recovery image and perform a wipe from there, and that's exactly what I'd suggest. Be prepared to loose everything stored on the phones memory, but you can use a backup app from the market for that... No you really should way more space than that, I can't really explain why...

The phone has two main partitions: /system and /data. It isn't /system that's filling up, it's /data (which makes sense...). The phone can't write to /system when it's unrooted, so it's not possible to store files there...
Everyone is trying to help but for a noob it can be a bit too much...4.2.7.1 is the best Rom available so keep that....RA Recovery is the best way to set up your memory card to accept your apps and keep them there freeing up a ton of space on the phone....simple way to fix is....Just format you sdcard with EXT3 using the RA-recovery v1.5.1 then once your card is formatted just reboot and Cyanogen's rom will move all the apps for you.....will not need to wipe any info on the phone that way...done it many times......Pm me if you need help!!!!

Young Money. Cash Money.
(partition sd card)
The non rooted standard T-Mobile rom is about the same size and will give you about the same amount of free space. There could be a more barebones rom but I think it's just a lot easier to run Apps2SD then to create a rom that might get you an extra 10mb of internal space. This is the fault of the internal memory on the phone being small. The only way to fix that is getting Apps2sd running which if you make a partion of 100mb should be enough to install all the apps you need. Getting a larger SD card for $10 is also another option so you wont have 1/10th of your sd cards storage gone.

You can always try different roms. CM is good and fast, but maybe try dwang 1.13 or Wesgarner version. wg is based on CM. I find it faster and more stable but this is just my opinion. if you back everything up with nandroid and some app like mybackup, you can flash all you want. you'll be able to get everything back with a nandroid/mybackup restore. try different stuff out and figure out what you like!

A2SD = Apps to SD. It allows you to save your apps onto your SD card allowing you to free up space on the phone. The SD car needs to be partitioned in order for it to work. Read the thread posted in the link above for further information.
After installing Fresh 2.0d, and formatting your SD card properly (use the search function and search apps2sd for the numerous threads)
I would STRONGLY recommend installing darktremor's apps2sd 2.5.
It appears to work much better.

I'm Rooted (Eclair 2.1) Now how do I do Apps2SD...?

OK, So I need to do the Apps2SD, as you know G1s only have 70MB storage, I downloaded the application to do it, didn't work, I know I need Pardon my SD card or somethin'...? (I'm 15, I know a-lot about computers, Can someone post an EASY VIDEO demonstration...?) I've looked all over 'n can't find one...
All Help will be greatly appreciated.

lol...you should be on Amon Ra's Recovery....From there you hold Home + Power to access it...and then select partition sdcard. All you need is a ext partition....which it automatically walks you through setting up 3 partitions. Swap (optional), EXT (for apps 2 sd), and Fat32 (for all your files).

make sure you backup your sdcard or you will loose all your data. Download Amon_RA's latest 1.7.0, rename it to recovery.img. Then open up the terminal app and type
Code:
su(enter, and select accept if necessary)
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img(enter)
Reboot recovery(enter)
Scroll down to partition sdcard, set it to 0 for linux swap and depending on your sdcard 256-512 MB for ext2. I like ext2 but you can use 3 or 4 if you like. From there, flash a stable rom such as CM5.0.8.
If you want to get more complicated, find and flash the 1.33.2003 so that you get access to fastboot, and from there flahs (via fastboot) the newest radio (and if you want) DangerSPL. Firerat, lbcoder, and ezterry made Danger obsolete, but I still have it because it's just easier. Of course, one of the guys i mentioned is probably gonna jump in this thread and school me about it =P.
Oh and, in the future either ask questions in the Q&A section, the General section, or the sticky at the top for questions.... I won't flame you though since you're new and all but others might not be so nice..

Aside from that, in the settings, in the applications section, you will see the option to enable apps2sd if you're on Cyanogen's ROM.
I was just gonna use Cyanogen's CyanogenMOD v6.00-DS RC1, BIG MISTAKE!
Now my phone won't boot, an I'm out a phone...
Just because your phone won't boot doesn't mean it's dead. Can you boot into recovery? Also, did you wipe before flashing?
OK, So it ain't dead, I just have to find the ROM I want, Which I did.
It's here:
(See the attached Picture for the link)
--------------
I wanna throw this phone into space! It won't load this ROM 'cause it say's :
"E: Can't Find Update Script. Installation Aborted."
Any way I can fix this...? or get it to load on my phone...?
Also, I made my dad get me a 8GB Card (I went from a 2GB)
So, I'ma all set, Now, I have to get this ROM loaded (I'ma need YOUR help, Cause I don't know what I'm doin'...)
(I'm almost 16 )
Thanks, in advance, I'm waitin' on y'all, so now I play the waitin' game...
( I can't load a custom Boot Image until I have a good ROM)
Apps2SD => Market problem
Hello, I have probe for this version. But I see the apps2sd, and I tick it on setup, and I have a ext4 partition with some apps. These apps loaded well, but if I install any, I get error download or package file invalid. Why?
If i switch off the apps2sd everything working well. But I also cannot move.
Why?
How can I use it?
