Forgive me if this is obviously listed somewhere. I've done quite a few searches and still can't seem to find any information about this.
While using the MoDaCo Desire ROM I've run across an issue that sadly seems to warrant me to stop using it: Regardless of using the stock SMS app or the HTC SMS application I receive force closing for MMS while attempting to read my messages. Using the HTC application I can't even view my messages from the beginning. It is like some MMS message has been que'd and attempts to load only to FC.
Does anyone know a fix? I've looked into using other SMS/MMS applications but they're not really the answer for me.
Beyond that, MoDaCo's ROM is quite nice and I would enjoy using it further.

did you restore a ton of older text messages? i recall reading this might contribute to the FC problem. also, did you install any Morphs, themes, etc.? maybe roll back to a nandroid backup without the themes to see if that helps.

I haven't received any texts for over a week now. I was running CyanogenMod 6.1 and tried multiple times to reboot/re-flash/wipe to no avail. Yesterday I flashed to CM7 and still no luck. Anyone have any ideas?
Am I the only one who sees a new post with this topic at least once a week? Too bad there's not a search option on xda. /end rant
Nandroid, flash a Sense based ROM, update profile & PRL, confirm that you can send & receive SMS, restore your nandroid.

Flash a sense rom, update your profile and prl. Send and receive a few text. Flash back to cm.
I haven't had this issue but it's worked for some. Task killers or removing the messaging apk because you use a 3rd party app would be another couple of common things

Or do what he said

Sorry for the annoyance, but thanks for helping me out. It seems to be working now, though I couldn't restore my nand backup for some reason. Oh well.
SMS compatibility issues
I am having what I believe to be compatibility issues with my hero. When my friends send me those annoying mass MMS's with video or something moving in the message all I get is the first still frame of whatever the video is. What could be the problem? I am using CM6 stable.
The problem is their mms and cm. You can view it on the sprint picture site or some you can save to sd by long pressing the message and view from there

Ever since upgrading to KK4 (Fusion XII) I have noticed a lot of problems with my messaging app. Lots of force closing without any force close notification, while replying to messages the repy message I am creating vanishes, and also when opening messaging usually it takes a while for contact names to show instead of their number.
I have been using the Gingerbread keyboard since upgrading. Happens on all kernles that I have used so far, which are, the kernel that comes with Fusion XII, Corn, and Samurai.
Is this a general KK4 issue, or more to do with the ROM I'm using?
I have seen a post about this somewhere, but never remember seeing any response to it. Also couldn't find it again, or I would've mentioned it on that thread.
Happens to me all the time. Im on serenity

Got fed up with the messaging issue so much that I went back a few builds, and using one of my favorites. I am now currently running crt60's Legend KJ1, with no tweaks, and no problems with messaging at all.
Still no idea what was causing the problems?
Hey, I recently ran into a problem and have not been able to find a solution with extensive searching.
I would like to interact with iphone group messages, as almost all of my friends in school use the iphone and there are several group messaging threads going around. The only app that I have found that works (I am open to an alternative!) is the VZmessanger. Unfortunately, running Liberty ROM 2.0, after installation I run the app only to receive the error message "SDK Initialization Failed." and the app wont open.
I am sure this has something to do with a custom ROM because it worked when I was on rooted stock. If anyone had any insight it would be helpful.
Handsent works well with iPhone and android both

Got a bit of an odd one for you guys. My girlfriends phone has exactly the same set up as me (phone rom kernel) but I have no issues at all. No matter what I do I cant open links from within her messages app (phone numbers / web addresses ect ) If I use a third party app like handscent it works fine but tbh I would much prefer the stock app. I have tried fresh installs, updates clearing data ect but no luck. Just about to try a completely different rom with a modded messaging app to see if it works. Any ideas?
Ended up just using a 3rd party sms application as it seems I am the only one with this issue. No issues after go sms install

If you look like on the xda portal... You'll find the way to take out htclinkify...
I would assume it has to do with that...

So I'm not sure how this started but I may have an idea. I used sms backup and restore to restore my texts to the G6. I was using Google Messages app for a couple days now until I discovered that there were themes available for the G6, so I uninstalled it. I started using the stock messaging app today and noticed I wasn't receiving any messages. So I open it up to see and now all it does it show a black screen. I fc'd it and cleared cache with no luck. I re-stalled Android Messages and they suddenly all popped up. I open the stock app and they all show up. So I uninstall the Android Messages app and I'm back where I started, with a black screen when opening the stock messaging app. Any ideas as to what is going on?
Are you changing the default messaging app first?

Thanks for the response. I believe it was because I had so many saved messages that it overwhelmed the phone lol. After it finally settled, it finally started working properly. Now if I can only find a good sms app...

With LG, whenever you backup/restore messages just wait for it as it might get stuck on a black screen or freeze when loading the app. I've realized this is completely normal and you kinda just have to give it time to catch up. I'm guessing in the period of time it's frozen while it's caching or something, but if you're restoring a few thousand messages it does take a bit to catch up; a few hundred messages typically come up almost instantly as I experienced this with my G2, G3, and V10. This behavior would suggest a poorly coded app in that the app isn't properly multi-threaded on that specific task - it could just be that the developers just overlooked it or something like that. On Samsung phones and other apps where that task is properly multi-threaded you can start using the app immediately but you notice conversations being updated and stuff like that.
As to a good messaging app.. It depends on what features you want. If you utilize Advanced Messaging, you're stuck with stock. If you don't mind losing Advanced Messaging then you can use practically whatever you want. A good option I used to use was Textra which offers an insane amount of custom options to make it look and feel the way you want. Android Messages is another good one, although pretty bare bones when it comes to customizations.

Yatta is a good messaging app totally customizable in every aspect.
