So I'm not sure how this started but I may have an idea. I used sms backup and restore to restore my texts to the G6. I was using Google Messages app for a couple days now until I discovered that there were themes available for the G6, so I uninstalled it. I started using the stock messaging app today and noticed I wasn't receiving any messages. So I open it up to see and now all it does it show a black screen. I fc'd it and cleared cache with no luck. I re-stalled Android Messages and they suddenly all popped up. I open the stock app and they all show up. So I uninstall the Android Messages app and I'm back where I started, with a black screen when opening the stock messaging app. Any ideas as to what is going on?

Thanks for the response. I believe it was because I had so many saved messages that it overwhelmed the phone lol. After it finally settled, it finally started working properly. Now if I can only find a good sms app...

With LG, whenever you backup/restore messages just wait for it as it might get stuck on a black screen or freeze when loading the app. I've realized this is completely normal and you kinda just have to give it time to catch up. I'm guessing in the period of time it's frozen while it's caching or something, but if you're restoring a few thousand messages it does take a bit to catch up; a few hundred messages typically come up almost instantly as I experienced this with my G2, G3, and V10. This behavior would suggest a poorly coded app in that the app isn't properly multi-threaded on that specific task - it could just be that the developers just overlooked it or something like that. On Samsung phones and other apps where that task is properly multi-threaded you can start using the app immediately but you notice conversations being updated and stuff like that.
As to a good messaging app.. It depends on what features you want. If you utilize Advanced Messaging, you're stuck with stock. If you don't mind losing Advanced Messaging then you can use practically whatever you want. A good option I used to use was Textra which offers an insane amount of custom options to make it look and feel the way you want. Android Messages is another good one, although pretty bare bones when it comes to customizations.

Yatta is a good messaging app totally customizable in every aspect.

I'm using flipz latest fresh toast rom, and i'm thinking of switching to using launcherpro but i can't figure some things out
At the bottom, the messaging button always goes to the stock messaging app
I did some research and everybody says it goes to whatever you have set as your default
So i went to manage apps and cleared out the data for the messaging app and then set default messenger to chomp through the people contacts
but the messaging button on launcherpro still goes to the stock messenger app
I have dolphin set as my default browser and that works just can't get frigen chomp to open
anyone know how to get this to work correctly?
If you remove Mms.apk, it'll default to your other SMS app.
However, I don't think that should do the trick. I always push the AOSP Mms.apk and then after I do that, launcherpro beta asks me which app should be default. I have a theory that if you rm your Mms.apk (after pulling it to back it up) and repush it, it should reset and then ask you which you want to set as default. I'm on Darchroid, so I can't test this theory myself, and no one in the other thread seemed to want to... So, give it a shot.
I have been told the Mms.apk is required by other programs, so removing it would be a bad idea. I too set the default messaging app to handcent and it is still going to the stock app. The LauncherPro dev said that he plans to make the bottom more customizable in his next release, which he plans to finish in about 2 weeks. I did find out that LauncherPro is not installed as a system app, so I suggest installing the update that came out 2 days ago using the market. It added 2 settings, rotate and home goes to the default page, so it acts like sense.

Like I said, I agree that removing Mms.apk is a bad idea.
What I'm saying, because it HAS worked for me every time, is pushing either the AOSP Mms.apk to your phone (it's faster, nicer, and does everything the stock one does - better!) and it WILL ask which SMS app you want to use as your default (I've done it so many times it's silly, and it works every single time) OR (this is the one I HAVE NOT tested that I'm asking someone to test) is removing the HTC stock Mms.apk and the repushing it. I can even provide both the .apks if need be.
I cant get anything on the bottom row to default to anything not handcent or opera mini
This is from the LauncherPro website:
That’s it for now. I think I came up with a pretty nice way to handle the shortcut dock customization. If there are no big bugs in the current release I should be able to start working on it tomorrow, though it probably won’t be ready until next week (going to New Zealand for the weekend).

LauncherPro seems to ignore defaults and it just opens the stock apps. I am looking forward to being able to customize the shortcut dock. The LauncherPro dev seems to work at a fairly fast pace, so I expect good things to be coming soon.
For some reason, my Handcent app will at least once per day display its release notes when opened as if I just installed it, and any changes I made to its settings will be reset. This is particularly annoying because I use custom notification tones for different contacts & for new texts in general. What could be the issue? It's not set to autoupdate.

App updates through the market don't mess with your saved data/app settings, so that's probably not it. The next time it happens, uninstall/reinstall the app and see if that helps. Do this through the market, not from a Titanium Backup batch or anything similar. Also, I believe Handscent has an option to back up all of your user settings. The next time you have to reconfigure everything, make a backup of your settings. At the very least, it will save you a hell of a lot of time until you figure out what the problem is.

I reinstalled it like you suggested. I also tried reinstalling via EasyUninstaller. Neither fixed the problem.
Also, to backup the settings, you have to be a premium user.
The only thing I can think that would have affected the app is I installed a custom theme for it. It wasn't a theme from within the app itself, but a mod a user had made to change the keyboard color and some other things. I thought I had uninstalled it, though. I installed it via AppsInstaller with the apk being on my sd card. I'll try to find the thread I got the apk from.
OK, here it is: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/team-fusion/34058-release-themed-handcent.html
What Rom are you running? Stock Captivate or ?. Some roms cause this issue, resets the app (s) for some reason. I've had the issue on a few other apps but not handcent. I also registered the app, might make a difference.

I'm running Darkys 7.0.1 port, if you've heard of it. It's VERY nice on appearance and battery life, but this problem just sucks!
Would registering it fix the problem? I don't want to pay $3 just to remove the ad bar.
There is a free registration. Not sure if that will fix the problem but hell, it's free and saves your settings.
I have restored handcent using TiBu for at least the last 10 rom flashes, app + data and never had a problem, just did it this morning when going to Perception 9.5, and every things is working fine, logged in and it restored all my theme settings, preferences, etc.
That's with the free registration. Quote from them " Register free handcent account, get online quicktext and online themes services"
Other thing is, are you running the latest update? Every update has always fixed any issue I was having with the program.
Saw this: "with the new version of Handcent just released and it seems to break handcent even after resigning the app. " From the link you posted.
Anyone using the native lockscreen? I have a question.
I use chomp SMS as my messaging client and I get numerous message counts on the lockscreen from the native messaging app. Is there any way to shut off that notification? Or do I have to use a different lockscreen? I really don't wanna have to use a different lockscreen. I'm actually trying to leave it as stock as I can.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am like you for the moment I am liking the stock look and feel of this phone for now. I do really like GoSMS because of how customizable it is but also because when you are setting up it does a brief setting check to see how the stock messaging app. is set and then tells you what to turn off. It is a pretty slick low resource using messaging app. I dig it.
If you have never tried it you might want to give that app. a shot. IMO it is one of the better messaging apps. out there. Here is a link to it on the market.
https://market.android.com/search?q=gosmspro&so=1&c=apps
I used GoSMS for awhile. I like it too but it still doesn't shut off the SMS count on the lockscreen.

Weird. I don't like the count on the screen either and there is a setting in both the stock and GoSMS settings that offers the option to disable the count for the lock screen. Maybe it is something specific with the Thrill. I don't know but now I am curious. I am going to look further into it. I check back and see if you found something before I do.
This has actually been mentioned in some review articles and as far as I know the reviewer was never able to actually get a fix for it other than to use the stock sms/mms. It is software related as far as they saw so the dev for chompSMS and what not will have to fix it.
Hey cool man thanks for the update. Because I had not found anything yet. LOL!

There is no way to disable it though the stock apps or settings. i use hancent sms and it has an option to set it as the default app for sms, mms, or all. when you pick both, the stock messaging app is bypassed until the next boot up, but only displays the notification until you open either handcent or the stock app. i have noticed too, that if you want to set a custom ringtone through an alternate messaging app, the stock notification ringtone must be set to silent or be turned off completely to work right. this can always be different for other phones though.
If you are rooted (or willing to do so), you can install Titanium Backup, create a backup of the stock messaging app, then uninstall it that way. No unread message count anymore. You can always reinstall it if you wish to go back completely stock.
I have a couple of problems with the text message app.
First, there are a couple of conversations that will crash the phone. I believe they may have to do with the amount of texts in the conversation (one is my sister and one is my girlfriend and those are the people I text the most). If I try to open either one of their conversations, the app will freeze up for a good minute or two. I can force close it but other than that, it's unresponsive. However, if I first open a different conversation and then go back and open the lengthier one, it will work just fine. Has anybody had this issue?
Second problem is that many times when I open a conversation, the app starts at the top (at the oldest text first) and I have to manually scroll to the bottom to see the latest texts.
Neither are a real serious problem but the crashing of the app when opening the lengthier conversations is very annoying.
I am rooted on the stock ROM but I have had these problems even before I rooted and even though I'm rooted, I haven't made any changes to anything (I rooted but have been unable to install a custom ROM due to my firmware).

Try using hangouts(google's texting app).
I use it and it works, runs smooth, and looks great
Give Hangouts a try first but I had to switch to the app Textra because MMS sporadically worked for me on Hangouts. I hope they have an updated material version of Hangouts when the rest of the material GAPPS arrive.
Ok I'm new here, signed up just to get help with this, so here's my problem.
Just got a new phone, a Nexus 6 (not the 6p). Upgraded to Android 6.0. Previously had a Note 3 running kitkat. On my Note 3 if I got new posts to a thread I'm subscribed to on a forum I'm a member of, new messages on Instagram or new messages on kik my phone notified me that I had the message. The app didn't have to be running for this to work. With my Nexus 6 however that isn't the case!
Text messages, voicemails and emails all work fine and notify my just the way they should, it's only the 3rd party apps that don't work. I know it's not the apps because like I mentioned it's ALL the installed 3rd party apps doing this! It has to have something to do with the Nexus 6 or the Android 6.0 or a combination of the 2.
I scoured the web looking for answers, including this forum, and came up empty so here's the information that people usually ask for:
1) My phone isn't on silent or do not disturb mode
2) My volume is turned up
3) Sound and notification settings-App notifications are normal and allow peaking for the apps in question. Treat as priority if not on because I don't want the notifications when I'm sleeping but this shouldn't keep them from coming in normally when the volume isn't turned off.
4) Settings-Apps for each app the notifications ARE NOT blocked and allow peaking is on.
5) I enabled ALL requested permissions for each app just to make sure a blocked permission wasn't the problem.
6) I white listed each app from battery optimization to ensure this wasn't causing the problem.
7) Battery saver is not turned on.
8) Push notifications are turned on and allowed for each app in the settings on the app and the notifications sound in the app settings is my default notification, which is set because it's the same one I get when the app is running.
Someone please help! This is driving me crazy. Like I mentioned I get the notifications if I have the app running in the background but if the app is off I don't. On my last phone I didn't have to leave the app running 24/7, draining my battery, to get the notifications! Is there some way to fix this????
Also, I already wiped the system data partition.

Are you using a custom ROM or did you take an OTA to get to Android 6.0? I also wanted to ask if you were getting the proper notifications from using lollipop 5.1.1 while you were on it? If you took the OTA I'd suggest wiping app cache/data for kik and that MIGHT restore the kik functionality. If it works for that one app it may work for others.
You haven't installed a third-party notification system at all have you? Like Teslaunread or anything else that requests notification access on your device?

I know you said battery saver is not turned on now, but did you ever have it on? I ask because ever since I turned it on for a few hours (then turned it off and kept it off), 3rd-party notifications have been wonky.
No custom ROM, I took OTA to get to 6.0 but I didn't install any of the APP's prior to getting to 6.0 so I don't know if they would have worked with 5.1.1 or not unfortunately.
I do have Nova Launcher and use Teslaunread with that but I had that on my previous phone and it didn't interfere with any of my notifications coming through.
And yes the battery saver was on a couple times when the battery got low.
Ahhh see you are making a misconception. The app has to be running to get notifications. At least the service does. When you killed them with your old device it only removed them from your view. It didn't really close them out. Unlike stock Android. If you kill the app then it is really killed. Killing the app will also stop the service which prevents your notifications from coming in.
Your best bet is to leave it be.

Actually leaving it running in the back ground still won't give me the notification, I only get the notification when I click on the app and open it, even if it is listed as running in the background. I found that out because I did start leaving the apps running so I'd get the notifications, only to find out that didn't fix my problem like I thought it would.

Do you have greenify or any apps that effect doze installed?
Could have been an issue with the OTA, you could flash the Stock 6.0 image via Fastboot, it may be worth trying PNF on android play, i use the root version so not sure on the non root but it's stops delayed notifications.

I used greenify w/root on my last phone but not this one. I don't think any of my apps would affect doze and turned doze off for the apps I've had trouble with to try and make sure doze wasn't the issue. Still not luck.

I may try those option and see if they help. This is driving me crazy, I figured a newer operating system would mean a better android experience but so far I was a lot happier with kitkat than I have been with marshmallow.
