I've been having trouble getting my nexus one to work as a mass storage device. I will mount sd and then it unmounts on its on. Tried on 32 bit system and it worked perfect. I can mount in recovery fine and i can use adb fine but not mass storage. I tried installing the drivers on here for 64 bit and it works for a little but if i restart my phone it starts unmounting and i have to reinstall drivers. i also tried installing pdanet and it works but same issue after restarting phone. any help would be appreciated
i've had no issues on win7 64bit mounting it, ive only done it once though, i prefer adb or i ftp files from pc to phone.
Using Win7 64bit here too....no probs...hmm..
Same here using Windows 7 64 bit no problems to report. I copied 3 gig music at one time to the SD and it worked fine.
I had the same problems.
The only way I could get it back to mounting again (and the not-mounting problem hasn't returned) was to:
1) Go into 'Devices and Printers'. (Start Button/'Devices and Printers'
2) Right Click on Nexus One and eject.
3) Disconnect usb cable and reconnect and then try to mount from N1 again...
I was thinking that the problem probably started because of my network mounts and then my usb hub on my monitor with all the card reader options as well. I think my drive letters got a little conflicted.
I had to fixed all that first in the Disk Management.
Hope that helps. I was really frustrated with not being able to mount the last couple of days.
Using Win7 64bit here and no issues. Mounted a few times to transfer music and pics.
i have no idea whats wrong. it works fine on my 32bit laptop. mass storage works in recovery. Its confusing
Manually seek and install driver?
I couldn't get it to work on windows 7 pro 64bit with administrator rights. With a user without admin rights, it worked fine!
I already tried manually installing and i have admin rights on windows 7 64 bit ultimate
there are 2 drivers you have to install from the androidsdk. device drivers and usb drivers. install through devmgmt.msc, browse to correct folders in android sdk to install.
You don't need the device drivers to use mass storage. You just need the usb drivers, which should have installed when you first plugged the phone in.
Have you got the Intel Matrix Storage Manager driver installed on your pc?
I have the exact same issue with win 7 64bit home premium. No problem on winxp 32 at work. Also no problems with my ubuntu 64 bit set up. It also works fine in recovery mode.
a long time ago I called HTC about this, because it happened right after I got the phone in January and the official HTC response was, 64 bit os's are not supported!
I had the same issue. It all basically came down to not "safely removing" the storage before unplugging.
Did your computer flag the micro SD card as not safely removed and does it want to scan it for errors when you plug it in? This was happening to me. Apparantly Nexus was somehow choking on the attempt to "repair" and it simply unmounted the card. One day I took the card out of my Nexus, put it into a card reader and let Windows check it for errors. After that, I didn't experience any auto-unmounting anymore.
Actually I'm lying
Another problem was the underpowered USB hub which I use. If you use a hub, try connecting directly to your PC.
Ironically, since flashing back to stock rom (just fiddling around cos I was bored ) I've just had this issue of Win7 64bit not being able to recognise/access the sd card of my N1. Here's how I fixed it:
1. Plug phone into PC.
2. Turn on USB storage from dropdown menu on phone.
3. Go to Device Manager in Windows.
4. Find 'Android Phone' in Device Manager.
5. Right-click and choose 'Update Driver Software'.
6. Choose the 'Browse my computer for driver software' option.
7. Choose 'Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer' option.
8. You'll now see 'Android ADB device' and 'USB Mass Storage Device'. Choose the latter and click next.
Windows should reinstall the mass storage driver and the sd card should mount in windows.
If you haven't installed Android SDK in the past then you'll not have an 'Android Phone' in device manager. In this case look in the 'Universal Serial Bus Controllers and follow 5-8 above but right-clicking 'USB Mass Storage Device' instead.
Note: I'd done a format of my sd card before plugging in the phone so if the method doesn't work try that (assuming you've nothing on there that you want to keep).
^ that's what i was trying to say

I have two questions concerning making a connection to a PC and hope someone can help me out here.
After much experimenting, I was finally able to connect my I9000 to my PC, without using KIES. But it was short-lived.
I read about someone removing his micro SD card, making some changes to a setting and then connecting as Storage. Well that worked for me. Once.
Now I can't connect again (Win XP) either with the card inside or without it.
If someone can tell me how to have my PC recognize my I9000 that would be great.
My second question is concerning where files are stored on the I9000.
When I made my only connection, I couldn't see which folder I should be transferring my data files to.
For example my .xls files, or my .doc files, or my .txt files etc etc.?
There are many possible places to copy them to and I'm sure they need to be in the right folder.
TIA
I installed the latest Kies and from it's menu I selected "Driver Recovery" - this installs the latest drivers for your phone.
Then from the home screen select Settings - About Phone - USB Settings - Samsung Kies. Go back to the home screen and plug in your phone - you should be good to go.
You don't have to use the Kies program - the drivers the program installs will show your built-in phone storage and your sd card storage as two seperate volumes in Windows Explorer.
You can also use Window Media Player to sync your music etc.
Note - for the connection to work you have to be using the default TouchWiz launcher on your phone - if you're using LauncherPro or ADW Launcher you'll have to switch back to the TWLauncher - you can use Home Switcher from the market to do this easily.

I'm having a ***** of a time making a connection!
I gave in and installed KIES (said 160MB). It turned out to be over 2G and took over 30 minutes to install!!!
After all that it wouldn't recognize my phone!
I re-imaged my hard drive to get rid of the damn program because un-installing it sure didn't work.
So I'm back to square one. Any other ideas where I can get the necessary drivers for Win XP SP2 ?
TIA
Thats odd - I downloaded Kies and it is only 141mb - I have it in front of me... and while I don't use it for anything it seems to provide the latest drivers. If you look at one of the stickies there is a download for just the drivers... good luck.

Thanks I'll try to find the sticky for the download.
The actual download was 145 MB, but after it finished installing, (which involved an online install) it was more than 2G (I chose the complete install).
Running uninstall got rid of most of the program but not my disk space!
I couldn't find where the files were hiding and certainly wasn't going to mess inside my registry to get rid of stuff.
I tried downloading the drivers but that didn't help.
One of a multitude of problems:
I have my phone connected to PC now (PC doesn't know about phone though)
and I'm in debug mode for USB.
I try to open the App "My Files" and get this friggin' message:
"Your phone does not have a SD card inserted" !!!!
In other words in this state, it is telling me that it can't even recognize the internal SD card!
I've gotten other confusing messages like this one when I've had my 8G external SD card inserted into phone, I launch the App "My Files" and phone tells me there is no SD card inserted!!!
Frustrating!!
A fresh test.
First I insert my 8G micro SD card into my I9000.
Then I go into App "My Files" and I can only see the files on my newly inserted 8G micro SD card. I can't see the files on my internal 8G! (But I could see them using this app just before I inserted my micro card!!!)
Yes, both the internal and the external SD mem are mounted!
Next test. I connect my I9000 to my netbook (Win XP)
and of course my I9000 still isn't recognized by my netbook (it did just once a few days ago).
Then I go into App "My Files" and guess what I get this time?
"Your phone does not have an SD card inserted" !!!
Yeah, tell me about it dear.

Yeah, I know!
Talk about bloat! What does Kies actually do that requires that size?
I think Samsung must be taking the mickey!
They probably think their customers are total idiots...

Maybe I misunderstand. Are you trying to connect to the PC in order to transfer some files to/from PC?
If so, put phone into 'Mass Storage Mode' (from 'Idle screen' > settings >About phone> USB settings> select mass storage.
Connect the usb cable, then pull down from top of screen and confirm to connect as mass storage.
Appologies if you already knew that

Thanks for trying to help. Yes I already knew that, and have done it many times.
I can't help you but I have the same issue in XP SP3
Find 2 removable storage devices (Internal, SD External) but doesn't allow me to browse through either.
It makes sense not giving you access to the internal if the file system is not supported from windows but my sd external is fat32 so it should work.
Unfortunately you can't specify to only use one storage device through external usb connection.
I'd be good to know a workaround for this. I connect my phones to my headunit and it only takes fat32
I had the same experience. I was using AWD Launcher while I was trying to connect to my PC, SGS shows changing, but PC doesn't show anything. As soon as I changed to Samsung Launcher, PC detect my SGS.
so you're telling me that I need to install drivers? it won't be automatic external storage detection just like on a windows mobile device or even the newer iphone 3g onward?

Interesting take on this ado.
At one point I was able to see 2 removable storage devices (Internal, SD External) on my desktop and netbook (both have Win XP SP2).
But, as happened to you, I couldn't get access to them when I clicked on them.
More info that might help with this puzzle:
I installed KIES (full install) and couldn't connect after selecting KIES on the phone).
I am not able to connect using Mass Storage mode either.
I was able to connect ONE time on the netbook and get into the phone folders. I believe this was after installing Samsung New PC Studio 3.
But after that, no dice.
When I first started trying to connect on the desktop and netbook I would get the typical Windows USB connection messages: unknown USB device, would you like to install drivers from this location? etc. etc.
That was good! It showed promise.
Then after a few times I stopped getting those messages from both devices. During that period, I made a partial connection on each device.
I could see two new drives (internal and external SD). But when I clicked on them it showed no space available. Braindead basically.
Something possibly related that I can't figure out at all.
When I go into 'My Files' /sdcard/ will only show SD internal IF my external SD card is not inside the phone. If my SD external card is inside the phone then it shows the SD external only, not the SD internal! Why?
Also very confusing: When I pull down the menu from the top on home screen and select Ongoing: USB connected: Select to copy files to/from computer, then it asks to Mount.
I choose Mount, go to 'My Files' and it says "Your phone does not have an SD card inside!" WTF? (It says that with or without an external SD card inside).
Also strange, when I chose Mount, it then starts to sever the USB connection with messages scrolling by at the top.
So to summarize (this is strictly from the phone's side)
when I connect via Mass Storage it seems to indicate that a USB connection is made. But when I select Mount, the USB connection is terminated!
Success, finally!
I wish I could tell you exactly what the magic bullet was, but it happened gradually. You know how you change something and it seems to help a little. So you change something else and it seems to be getting better?
Here are they key steps that I can remember:
-I went back and re-installed SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_x86.exe.
There are no messages given after the install completes, they're just drivers, not a program.
-I put the I9000 into debug mode for USB connections (not sure if I need this now).
-After connecting the phone to WinXP I went to phone's home screen, notification window and selected the USB connection and chose to Mount the drive(s).
I can now see and access both the internal SD and the external SD! WOW!
if you want Kies just to manage and organize your phone, i found a better software for that than kies
check here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765081
So a driver instal is required. Bugger. I need my external storage to show up and be defaulted to first because it would be nice if I could connect to my headunit in car to get to my mp3's.
Maybe some sort of hack could help here

@ado_civon: I'm not sure you do need to install the drivers.
My issue was that I was not getting the 'USB connected, touch to transfer files' status bar option.
I'm using Dark's ROM (based on Froyo) and don't see the Settings > About Phone > USB settings option. However, when I switched on Settings > Applications > Development > Enable USB debugging, and reconnected, I did get the status bar option.
Sadly, selecting this still did not let my computer (a Win XP machine at work, so I have no administrator rights) recognise the drive. Maybe it works for others, though. On my HTC Hero this works fine, so I'm still not sure why it won't work with the SGS
Running Perception 10.4
XP SP2
Got the drivers installed, and I was able to browse my device on a friends lappy w/ the drivers.
I installed iSyncr to help a friends daughter learn how to use it. Now my XP won't mount the drive, it just says it's not there, or sits in autoplay forever. I un-installed isyncr from my PC and my phone. It mentions deleting autorun.inf autorun.inf but I can't find that on the drives. I deleted the .exe and the folder. But still my XP shows 3 drives instead of the normal 2. None of which I can browse.
I just want to use my phones memory for storage like I used too.
Found the autorun.inf on the external. But when I mount the drive it still sits in autoplay forever....
I uninstalled all the drivers, and re-installed the drivers. It just locks up explorer when I connect via USB. Perception is running Mass storage and USB Debugging.
I can view the storage via another Win7 computer, but this XP got f*cked. My system restore is disabled. I'm afraid this might mean it's time for a full redux of my system. Which it kinda needs anyways.
Any other suggestions though?
Often times you can get software to uninstall properly by downloading it again, installing it and then uninstalling it.
Dunno about the USB. The drivers shouldn't have changed. I use Samba over WiFi mostly so I don't use USB ever.
Hi I have some really strange problems with accessing my 16 GB SD-card from my PC.
First of all the SD is OK. I can see how much space is used on it in HTC Sync, I can browse the files with Astro and Read/Write to it.
However I can not for the life of me figure out how to access my SD car from my pc. I plug the phone into my pc and choose disc drive. The SD then pops up as a removable disc in MY Computer, it does not say how much space is available or how much I've used. When i try to click on it it says "Please insert a disk into Removable Disc(Q"
When I go to Device manager and click properties on HTC Android Phone USB Device it says that the driver is from Microsoft(?) and that the driver Version is 6.1.7600.16385(?)
I figured something happened here and removed the driver, rebooted and plugged in the SD-card that came with the phone into the phone figuring I would install the drivers from the SD, however the Microsoft driver automatically installs itself again and I'm stuck in a loop.
I've also tried my HTC Desire, my HTC Hero and my girlfriends HTC Wildfire same problem.
Any tips on how to fix this? I got some save games etc on another HTC I got (HTC Desire) that I really want to copy to my Incredible S.
do you have an ext(2-4) partition on it ? This can cause it. Otherwise try to pull it trough adb (or share through dropbox or alike). And than reformat it. Sometimes it gives weird results in windows and the main fix i found here is to copy it a different way and format it again.
No ext(2-3) partition on it. I'm starting to thing it's my pc since it's the same problem on 4 phones :/
Than it probably is your driver or something... have you tried a linux live cd or something to see if it works? With that computer problem i cannot help you, perhaps someone else
o yeah, maybe try a different usb port sometimes that works...
It's definitively my drivers. Tried it on my older laptop (travel-only pc) and it worked like a charm there, now I just have to find out how to get the correct drivers to work on my computer since it didn't work last time
Reinstall htc sync, replug the phone.
If that don't work, try updating your driver manually, driver should be known
You can also alter the Android Google usb driver (adb) to work with the incredible s. But I'm not going to explain that when typing on my phone hh.

Uninstall HTC Sync and use the generic windows driver..... it will detect as a memory drive.... or use Linux enviornment to use ur memory card as a usb drive if u have problems with windows.... !!!
It works like charm on linux... i use linux so its rather easy... plug and play... no unnecessary sync problems

Tinker On!) This is also a WIP! I work 12+ Hour Days, but I will make this better!!!)
So I found a driver fix for Windows 8.1 64 bit that FINALLY after a day of messing with it, was successfully able to update the driver for the Fastboot/ADB "Android Debug Bridge" portion in Device Manger for the Nvidia Shield. I have a Lenovo Y500 Dual GT650 SLI laptop and for the LIFE of me, no matter what I tried it didn't work. Universal ADB didn't work, Minimal ADB didn't work... this was finally the fix for ME at least...my computer recognizes Fastboot on both 3.0 AND 2.0 USB ports (;
Step 1 - (Uninstall Previous Drivers)
- With your Shield Booted in to android, and USB Debugging enabled under Developer Option, plug your shield in to your pc, and Uninstall any previous drivers for Android Fastboot (universal ADB) Via Device Manager - (Start+E) then click Manage at the top, then Device Manager once computer management is open.
Step 2 - (Disable Driver Signature Enforcement)
- Unplug Shield, then move your mouse to the bottom right of the screen so the side panel pops up. Click ("Settings"), then ("Change PC Settings"), then ("Update and Recovery"), then ("Recovery"), then ("Advance Start up Restart now"), then ("Troubleshoot"), then ("Advanced Options"), then (Start up Settings"). then ("Restart"). Once your computer restarts you should see a list of options, you want to click number 7, Disable Signature Enforcement.
Step 3 - Download Windows 8.1 Fastboot drivers
Once your computer starts back up, download and extract the FOLDER from this ZIP to your DESKTOP http://www.mediafire.com/download/i3lcm7dwl581518/ADB_Fastboot_Drivers_Win81.zip
Step 4 - Re-install and correct ADB Drivers
Open Device Manager again, and Plug in your shield while it's booted into Android. Wait for the drivers to install like normal. if you see any exclamation points, right click the device, hit ("Update Driver Software"), then ("Browse my computer for updated driver software"), then ("Browse") then click "Desktop" and the ADB Driver folder then click next and it should pop up RED saying Install or Not install. you obviously want to install...Click next and you should be good! Now to check fastboot! LEAVE DEVICE MANAGER OPEN!
Step 5 - Correct Fastboot
Driver Unplug and Turn off your shield. Once it is OFF, press and hold the BACK/HOME buttons then press the Nvidia Center Key on the Shield. This will put you into Fastboot. Once you're IN Fastboot, plug your shield back into your PC. it should install the WRONG driver for Fastboot AGAIN and should show an Exclamation point, just follow step 4 and you should be able to update it to the correct driver then Wallah! You can now use Hexitnow's Toolkit "Shield Ram" Flawlessly! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2661067
Hopefully this works for you guys, it worked for me 6 times now!, I uninstalled everything and did it again and she booted into fastboot using his tool and then rebooted once in Fastboot. I was then able to Unlock the Bootloader, install CWM and Root Fine Just fine!
Confirmed working on Windows 7 64 bit also! I've Used 5 other peoples PC's/Laptops to confirm. One thing I can say is they've ALL been 64 bit verison's of Windows 7/8. haven't tested on 32 bit...who has 32 bit anymore anyways?...haha

64gb SDXC card fix
After some tinkering I discovered a way to finally get my Nvidia Shield to recognize my Sandisk Ultra 64gb Micro SDXC card via the shield.
It wont recognize the Standard format of exfat/128kb cluster size, and NTFS format wont allow the shield to write to the card. So I was experimenting and found that if you plug the card into your pc and format it exfat/2048 cluster size, the Shield WILL read it and you are able to successfully erase the SDXC card via the shield under the storage menu! Success!! I am now able to Read/Write from the 64gb while my shield is plugged into the PC and from inside android, 4.4.2 ROOTED of course (;
Step 1 - Transfer files from SD card to PC
Take your SDXC card out of your shield and plug it into your PC via card reader and copy all needed/wanted files from the card to your desktop. Start+E/Double click SD card/ Highlight and copy all/Paste to Dsktop
Step 2 - Format SDXC with your PC - YOU WILL LOSE EVERYTHING
Now you need to format it to something the Shield can utilize. go back to my computer "start+E", and RIGHT click your SD card and hit FORMAT. Then Change the cluster size to 2048 and hit quick format.
Step 3 - Format/Erase SDXC with your SHIELD
Now eject your card from your PC and plug it into your Shield, and go to Settings/Storage, then scroll down and hit ERASE SD card. It will take about 10-15 seconds but it is formatting it to be able to use it properly.
Step 4 - Transfer Files back to SDXC card
Now copy all your important files that you saved to your desktop back to your SDXC card on your shield either by plugging the Shield into the PC or by taking the card back out, and plugging it back into a card reader... which is faster...and there you go you should have a totally usably 64gb card!
If This has helped you at all be sure to like my post and comment with tips/suggestions or thanks!
Did this help?
Let me know if this helped! I know I was excited! Nothing like owning a powerful laptop and not being able to unlock/root a shield even when you're giving the tools in dummy form!
Screenshots!
I went through and added some screenshots just for the extra help needed to show what to do! I uninstalled my drivers yet again to go through the process and it took all of 1 minute including reboot. Enjoy!
64 g sd card fix
The sd card fix work great thank you
Now I'm wondering why I never had a 64GB card issue. I don't remember changing anything before I used it. I wonder if I made it FAT32 in my sleep one night :/
tadahhh
Glad it worked for you guys, I use a Samsung EVO 64gb card now and had to do the same thing but boy she sings!
Thanks man, i finally get to work adb on mi w 8.1 tablet,
I formatted the card in exFat with the cluster size at 2048 but the shield just changed it back to Fat32.

This one seems to be more of a Windows problem than an issue with the Nexus, so a Mod can feel free to move this if it's miscategorized.
I just got my Nexus 6 today and I'm currently trying to get everything set up. I consolidated the files between my Internal and External storage from my HTC One M8 earlier into a folder on my laptop (including SMS and Titanium Backups), with the plan to just dump everything into the Nexus internal storage. When I plug the phone into my primary laptop, I get the notification that the "Google Nexus ADB" software installed successfully, and the battery charges. However, it doesn't mount the storage, even when I play with the USB mount settings.
It's likely an issue just with my primary laptop, because I tried plugging the Nexus into both my work laptop and my desktop computer, and the storage mounted on both of them fine. Any suggestions on how to fix this? For the time being, I'm re-copying the files onto my desktop, but I would like to get this resolved for the future.
FYI, I'm running Windows 7 on all 3 of the aforementioned machines.
Thanks in advance.

I didn't update the drivers on any of my computers but the phone mounted fine on 2 of them. I'll give this a try later tonight or tomorrow, though and see if that resolves it for the problem computer. Thanks!
