New Cellphone after HTC Kaiser for 300$? - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Hi,
I have my HTC Haiser since 2007 now and before I leave the US in May I am thinking of buying a used cellphone, for about 300$, since they are more expensive in Europe.
I like my htc Kaiser, but I am thinking of replacing it for a newer, thinner, faster device with a higher resolution than QVGA.
I do not need a Hardware keyboard.
I would like something else than the Iphone 3G, and no Android, becoause I need the GPS Function and an offline Navigaion solution.
Do you have any suggestions for a newer phone, like the Tuch HD etc. which is better than the iphone 3g for 300$? (used on ebay)
Thank you,
MasterX
PS: I hope I wrote this in the right forum secton...

Um I'm fairly sure iphone has offline gps with apps like TOM TOM. Cmon now.. isn't this a question better suited for general chat? Tilt 2?

Is it worth trading Hermes up for Kaiser?

I'm currently using Hermes (8525) and thinking about getting Kaiser. If you have had Hermes before I'd like to hear your word of wisdom from whomever have had both devices for practical usage. Unfortunately I don't have the luxury to keep both.
What I love about the Hermes that's not found in Kaiser are flash light, IrDa, and comm manager button. On the other hand Hermes is missing GPS, bigger memory, the "possibility" of having hardware accelerated graphics, supposedly better camera, tilting hinges, and in my particular case front camera (I'm using 8525 and there's no _practical_ solution to put the front camera in and if I were to get Kaiser it better be NOT AT&T tilt that has no front camera as well).
I'm afraid I'll be missing Hermes exclusive features if I switch to Kaiser, even though I don't use those features too often. It is however very tempting especially the built in GPS feature (yes I have followed the hidden GPS thread and struck down by the bad news that we can't practically revive the chip in Hermes).
A word of advice or two from you guys would be very appreciated.
PS: I posted this in Hermes forum a while ago and I'm also interested to hear Kaiser owners' opinion about this too.

This is kind of like going onto the Corvette Club of America forum and saying " I'm thinking of trading my Chevy Malibu for a Corvette, what do you think?" My Tilt is Great. I personally have never experience any of the quirks others have complained about. If you like the new features and upgrade possibilites better. Then do it.
Out of everything that I read, I decided that it was NOT worth the upgrade. Then my Hermes started acting up BADLY with white screens and buttons that stopped working. So I reluctantly upgraded sooner than I intended.
I have loved my Kaiser. The 400mhz vs 400mhz CPU doesnt explain much why my Kaiser is so much faster than my Hermes. And I love the GPS .... and the battery life is better.
Also I never could find a radio where I could leave on 3G inside my condo and not drop calls. I tried and tried and tried. I leave 3G on my Kaiser with NO dropped calls even inside exactly where my Hermes would drop calls - and the 3G is not sucking the battery like on the Hermes.
I was the same way. I think it depends on the price that you will have to pay. I was able to get the Kaiser (Tilt) when it first came it on AT&T and I just couldn't pass it up. Now having had it for over a year, and knowing the differences, I would have paid more if I had to. I know that I may have been reluctant to pay more at the time, but it's one of those things where, "Now looking back, I would do it all over again" (but with more money ) if that makes any sense...
I've said this before elsewhere, but here goes again...
I broke my Hermes. If I had not broken it, I would not have upgraded to the Kaiser.
Now, I have a Kaiser and I don't consider it to be vastly better than the Hermes. Perhaps it was the way I use my phone that makes this the case, or perhaps it is that the O2 ROM was the limiting factor. Either way, I don't think it would tempt me to upgrade or renew my contract, so will be onto a rolling 1-month contract until a more exciting handset (am thinking Raphael) turns up.

malibu vs vette is too much of a stretch and you didn't give perspective on both sides as to comparing one to the other.
to answer cyberblue's question:
I have used hermes before though never owned one. to me built in gps is a must and i chose tilt solely because of that. if i were willing to tote a bluetooth gps device, i wouldn't have bothered getting a tilt.
if you can wait a little longer, see if the new upcoming htc devices has all that you like. mind you that infra red is probably not going to be present in newer devices.

You both totally missed my point, I was not comparing cars. What my point was, was that much like the Corvette Club of America, everyone there has one, everyone is an enthusiast or they would be part of the club and you probably will not get an unbiased opinion if that is what he was looking for?
If he was interested in unbiased reviews he should check the review sites
Again seriously?

Diamond Alternatives

Ok I am fast moving towards selling my diamond and buying one of those giant brick phones from the 80's seriously....
Ok the killers for me are battery life, poor reception, its laggy and for some reason it hangs up when I try to answer a call too often.
So I'm sure others are thinking the same thing, what are the alternatives everyone is looking at??
The 3g iphone might be an option for me, I know there is not as much software for them but I made the pc -> mac change a while ago and never looked back. Is there anything else worth concidering with 3G and GPS??
It really depends on what is important to you.. does it need to be small? does the OS matter? Does it have to be a 'smart' phone?
You can start by looking here: http://pdadb.net/
You can filter on OS, screen size (vga, qvga) etc
Personally i havnt found anything of similar size and spec. Only the iphone comes close but apple have really locked it down. I can see software being high priced
Also it'll cost a bomb for the tariff - you can't walk into a store and buy it without signing up on the spot. So even if an 'unlock' comes out you're stuck. Unless you buy a prepay one - price not confirmed yet but probably 400 quid on O2.
If the look of the 3g iphone appeals then check out the Samsung i900 Omnia. Be aware though, it is brand new, like the diamond, and like the diamond, will be buggy.
To be honest, if you want a phone that works, don't buy brand new just released models.
How about HTC Touch Pro?
I just sold a 16gb iPhone to change to a Touch Diamond (which should arrive tomorrow). The iPhone is a great piece of kit - but unfortunately Apple made too much effort making it a cool media device, and not enough time making it a phone.
No MMS, Poor SMS features (not able to delete a single text, no idea of text length etc), No Video Recording etc.
I originally sold it to buy a 3G iPhone - but then I found out its exactly the same software - except with GPS and 3G.
Samsung Omnia (SGH-i900) is an alternative. Coming very soon. But still questions re: which 3G bands it will support (but we already know the Diamond is only dual band 3G, so it likely won't be any worse).
toshiba g910
Xperia X1, no doubt¡. I wont buy Diamond because of the lack of KB and the comments here. Then I was going to buy HTC Touch Pro and finally....I fell in love with Xperia X1.....
The Xperia doesn't have Satellite GPS, only Data GPS (A-GPS) -> No Tomtom etc, only expensive Google Maps navigation.
The Samsung i900 seems to be an alternative, but seems to have a weaker backlight of the display in comparison with Diamond or iphone 3G.

from wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A-GPS
"Some A-GPS solutions require an active connection to a cell phone (or other data) network to function, in others[2][3] it simply makes positioning faster and more accurate, but is not required."
i beleive this statement is incorrect. agps is more faster and trys to get your position by downloading data from internet
Just my 2 cents:
Death before getting iphone.
Remember boys, Second best they are!
Samsung Omnia, if you want WM one with good features. Only two things that really bother me about it - Samsung propietary connector and lack of proper hard reset (so if you install something bad that prevents booting of OS, you screwed and will have to visit a service center for re-flash).
If you dont care about WM, consider the new iPhone 3G. Its less feature-packed, however price is better too.
Or just wait for something from E-Ten.
Or for Google Android devices
i'll buy a brick if.......i''ll know that is supported here and it will have a sub-forum here, at xda-dev.!!!!!
now serious i found a little funny an futile to open here, in diamond's forum a thread about "i sold my diamond, what to buy instead".
each rom i flash, each tweak i add i like more and more my diamond.
generally speaking please stop posting completely useless post, and stop responding. each time you respond you "bump" it in the detriment of other post that are dealing with important technical stuff and help ppl in distress here. i know, i just did that but for a good cause...lol
we have more important things to do than considering witch new pda to buy and replace the diamond.

Tilt vs Diamond?

Apologies from the start if this is the wrong place to ask this or if it's a done-to-death question that I just didn't find searching.
I'm in need of a new WinMo phone, my old Wizard having grown legs and run off.
I'm looking mainly at the Tilt, since it can be snagged so cheaply online. It looks like it does everything my old Wizard did while adding a GPS, better hardware in general, and a better form factor.
I can't help but wonder if I should wait for the Diamond, though. It's a much sleeker phone to be sure, and the lack of a keyboard doesn't mean much to me. I know there's some basic differences in the hardware (and the Diamond's VGA screen would be great), but I'm curious if anybody has any opinion on whether the Diamond's really worth the extra $200 or so. Are there any subtler things to seriously recommend one over the other?
neither...
get Touch Pro
its a Kaiser+ in the look of Diamond

Kaiser/Tilt worthy upgrade?

Any Tilt or Kaiser owners plan to upgrade to the Touch Pro 2? Does it seem like it would be a significant upgrade? I'm curious to what you fellow Tilt/Kaiser owners think...
I have the Tilt and have not upgraded to the Fuze. I was waiting for the next big thing that ATT was potentially was going to bring over and it seem like this is it. I love the device's design in every aspect; looks amazing physicaly. What i don't like is that they stuck it with a 3mp camera (and removed flash!). I absolutely love the 3.6" screen. Basically, i'm pretty sure i'll be upgrading (i saved my contract upgrade and rejected the Fuze for this reason).
Yeah, I'm going to buy Touch Pro2, the reasons why, larger screen, better hardware, 5-row keyboard, looks very very cool, more finger-friendly.
iphone. if lack of a hw keyboard is not a deal breaker. After owning 2 winmo phones (currently using a tilt) and modding many other peoples iphones, i can honestly say that the iphone is superior in usability/apps/stability. after drooling for a touch diamond and then hearing my friend say its laggy after he bought it, was a real disappointment. Microsoft is really behind the curve in the mobile sector. Thinking about selling my tilt for iphone now. Might wait till winmo 7 to come out before purchasing another winmo phone. For the record i'm a pc guy and i think apple products/fans our generally pretentious and kinda douche-ie (not all though).
Not sure about the Touch Pro2. I rarely .. if ever use my keyboard. I am waiting on the HTC Topaz for ATT..... drool.
I'm probably gonna go for the TP2. 800x480 screen!
They only issue i see with the device is that they've removed the d-pad.
HTC looks like they've put every good feature into this device, from FM Radio to TV Out. It looks perfect, and although a faster processor or a DPAD wouldn't hurt. And a 6.5 upgrade sounds good as well. I am certainly getting this phone.
Dave
good thing i passed on the fuze too...The Touch pro 2 will definitely be up there on my next phone list...And this will probably be the real successor to the tytn ii...I think it also matches the specs we had a few months back on the then phantom "TILT 2" that never showed up...until now...
TP 2.... is it worth sniffing at?
Does anyone know if it'll have proper 3D and 2 D DirectX and Direct Draw drivers included? I'm not wanting a HTC customised menu so much as full native support of the built in hardware within the operating system and parts thereof such as Pocket Mediaplayer itself. I'd like to use video playback without having to slash the frame rates and/or resolution as I have to with my Kaiser (even under TCPMP).
I'm concerned to read that although it has GPS support, it doesn't appear to list what software is provided to use this in the UK/Europe. Does this mean that it could be the TP all over again with HTC refusing to acknowledge any GPS problems that may crop up? Without a tried and tested native GPS app bundled with the device, it won't be one for me.
I'm very tempted - but I think I'll have to wait until I actually can put my hands on one in a shop to decide. I fear I will find it too large and/or thick for my liking. The Tilt is thick, but small. The iphone is large to the point I feel mixed with regard to the size in the pocket/screen comfort balance, but at least is thin. The TP2 will be large AND thick. And it loses the DPAD indeed, and I use that a lot
only a few people think it would be a worthy upgrade?
What's that saying, once bitten....

If those who currently have Kaisers (or TPs for that matter) get a feeling of déjà vu with the 'finished' product and its shortcomings (video drivers, keyboard performance, GPS time to lock and any lag, important bits/features missed out etc) then yes, you are correct. HTC need to learn from its mistakes and provide a product that actually meets peoples needs fully and reliably if they want those who've already been stung by them to part with cash on a new HTC product. Many people here have already said they'll never buy another HTC product due to all the problems they've had so you get an idea of the extent of feeling about such things!
I'm planning to get the TP2
- Higher resolution big and wide screen
- Larger battery
- Faster processor
- More internal memory
- 5 row keyboard
- TV out
- USB OTG
- New TOUCH FLO 3D with larger soft menu screens
- WM 6.5 (when HTC will make it available)
I'll miss:
- D-pad
- Jog wheel
- Buttons!

Or, there are people like me who are really happy with the Kaiser, and for whom it would take something really good to warrant a change. As said, I'll see the TP2 when it's there, but until then I don't plan to change at all.
If the cookers start cooking good roms and it can be unlocked ok then yes it looks lovely

Which sucsessor

Hey mates,
I dont know the actuall Phones on the market , so i thought you guys can maybe help me out.
I am looking for a good sucessor to my Kaiser. I really love this phone but its already 2 years old now and well my phone looks like somekind of trash .
Also i got massive problems in the last time , dunno why. I am using the Ultimate X2 roms at the moment. But it seems that i sometimes cannot open my contacts or run programs.
So i like to get a new phone cause my phone contract is going to run out also.
I was thinking about the X2 but it seems to be tooooo pricie :/.
Do you guys have any nice suggestions what phone i should get ? A must have is a qwertz keyboard
Thanks
HTC
Device database is good to get the full specs
TP2 if outa price range then the Raphael is still an extremely good phone.
Re: Kaiser hard-reset or flash another ROM...
Raphael can be had for about £160 on eBay, simply unlock it if required & use whatever network provider takes your fancy.
Most other keyboard options are going to be pricey but if your thinking of starting a contract soon you might find a reasonable deal !
You could keep the Kaiser, reflash it with a stable ROM & buy & fit a new complete housing for it !
The Verizon Droid comes out on the 6th in the US. Not sure if you are looking to stick with an HTC device or Windows Mobile. It's only going to be $199 rather than the TP2 which is as much as $350. It's got a similar processor and google maps turn-by-turn directions. And....it has a directional pad, if you can't live without that.
Check it out: http://phones.verizonwireless.com/motorola/droid/
Touch pro 2 is the best successor. I dont think the droid fits the title of "successor" when talking about the kaiser. The touch pro2 retains the tilting screen, windows mobile operating system, and of course the slide out qwerty.
