Un-Rooting a T-Mobile G1? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey folks, tried to root my G1 but it has went a bit wrong and i'd just rather go back to the stock firmware.
I have followed the steps on thread 491350 (I'll post the steps as I can't post links as a new user) but when I get to step 6 and push Alt + S I get this error message
'Installing from sdcard....
Finding update package....
Opening update package....
E: Can't open /sdcard/update.zip
(No such file or directory)
Installation aborted
Press Home+Back to reboot'
Any help or suggestions would be much appriciated.
Thanks
-------------------------
Here are the instructions I have been following:
1. Get the original SPL for your phone, get it here
2. Rename it to update.zip and copy it to your sd card. /sdcard
3. Download the DREAIMG.nbh from here.
4. Place DREAIMG.nbh on the root of your SD card. /sdcard
5. Go into your phones recovery. [Hold the home & power button]
6. Push Alt+S on your G1 to flash it with update.zip
7. After it does its thing, gettig back to your home screen.
4. Start phone in bootloader. [Hold camera+power button]
5. Hit power to start the update DO NOT INTERRUPT!! i can not stress this enough.
6. Click on the action button(track ball) and your phone will reboot.
7. YOU NOW HAVE STOCK FIRMWARE, it will update on it's own in a little bit, or *Settings>About phone>System Updates*

the file isn't signed
did you 'open' it in windows?
if so download it again, but don't open it
rename to update and try again

(Thanks again for your prompt reply)
I did open it, yes. But i'm still getting the same error.
I formatted my SD card (Fat32), downloaded the file again, renamed it to update, placed the file on the root of my SD card and also placed 'DREAIMG.nbh' on the SD card (Should I only do one at a time)?
I then turned my phone off, switched it back on pressing the home key and power button and pressed Alt-S. I then got the same error as I posted above.

you need to unzip the file and place the .nbh file onto your sd for it to be detected. Then you can install the file by cam+power, it doesn't use .zip files.

What .img file?
From the instructions that where on this forum it says download the correct SPL, rename update.zip and place it onto the SD card. It then says download DREAIMG.nbh, download and copy onto SD card.
$10 paypal for the one that gets it working

Yeah meant dreaimg not .img. But inside of the zip is a .nbh that has to be unzipped. The update.zip is the SPL renamed.

I put the dreaimg.nbh on the root of the SD card, held the camera button, pushed the power on button, it went to the red/green/blue screen, then to the greyish screen where it said 'checking' then showed 'not allow - 28002'
I'll have a look at the website you provided.
Thanks

Yeah it should be grey and seen after rainbow screen.

Just a quick post to say I finally managed to do it (after hours and hours of trying).
Eventually, what I done was manually update the phone to cupcake, then from their on my device update the phone to Donut.
Not sure if the phone was unrooted, but then again I am not 100% sure it was actually rooted (Maybe I done something wrong).
Everything sorted now though. Cheers

How did you do it?
Hey hibs1875,
Could you post exactly what you did step by step? I am having the same issue you are and can't find any answers online. I downgraded to RC29 and now doing the SPL update I get the not verified error. Please let me know what you did. Thanks.

If you unrooted it did you reroot it so you can flash a rom?
Also I know you said you redownloaded it, but did you check the MD5sum.
If you've unrooted then like supreme mentioned, it would be wise to re-root and try flashing again. Also are you running Cyanogen & JF's recovery image? Would make updating much easier if so.

Help!! Need to go back to original spl

I need some major help guys.... i need to send my g1 to tmobile but my only problem is i cannot seem to unroot. each time i get to the Grey and Blue screen it does not load, it says (loading no image)... then it goes back to the RAINBOW screen. im i doing something wrong? I have followed these steps. i would greatly appreciate your help.
I. Downgrade the SPL (If you never loaded a new SPL or are coming from a completely stock Donut G1, SKIP THIS SECTION).
1. Download the Original SPL:
Original SPL
2. Rename the Original SPL to Update.zip and place it (now named update.zip) on the SD card (not in any folder).
3. Turn off the phone
4. Turn on the phone holding Home and End key till the recovery screen pops up.
5. Hit Alt W to wipe the phone, then hit Alt S to load the update.zip
6. After the update is complete, press Home and Back to reboot.
7. Once the phone reboots to the G1 Logo, turn it off by taking out the battery. Then put the battery back in. *READ THE REPORTED ISSUES FOR A COMMON ISSUE WITH THIS STEP!
II. Load the DreaIMG.nbh File
1. Download the Original DreaIMG.nbh file:
Original DREAIMG.nbh
2. If the file downloaded above downloads as a .Zip file, please unzip it first then put the DreamIMG.nbh file that is inside on the SD card, NOT in any folder. (If you did Section I the phone is off still, take out the memory card, put it in the MicroSD adapter and plug it into your computer to transfer the file over, since your G1 won’t turn on right now if you did Section I above. Otherwise if you did not need to do Section I above, then you can just put it on the SD card normally using the usb cable and the phone).
3. Turn the phone off if it is on.
4. Turn on the phone by holding the Camera button and the End key until the bootloader screen turns on.
5. Hit the End key to start the update. DO NOT INTERUPT THIS PROCESS.
6. Once it is done, hit the trackball to restart the phone. You now are on the stock firmware RC29.
First step is posting in correction section(Q&A). Second step is using the search.
Read the damn rules for posting new threads or go away
i did!! n i still didnt get help from the thread that was posted by {tubaking]
Did you place the file DREAIMG.nbh on the root of your sdcard??
yes i did... i even tried with rc30 but it didnt work.
i keep getting stuck on the last step. i have cynogenmod.
You are pressing camera+power to get this done??
yes i am...
i followed all the steps correctly..for some reason it keeps messing up at the end when it gets to the grey and blueish screen.
And is your card formatted to Fat32. And did you check the MD5sum on the file to make sure it's the complete file.
Wow mikey on here helpin.
yes it is formatted
i don't know what that is..MD5sum
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Md5sum
how do i check if the MD5 is a complete file>?
To see if a given file is valid, pass the output of a previous md5sum run with the switch -c. Thus, the following two steps occur:
1. Compute the MD5 sum and store it in a file using md5sum file > file.md5
2. Check for validity with md5sum -c file.md5
If file is not present, omitting the file parameter or passing a - reads from standard input
i don't understand smh
Just redownload the RC29 file again and retry it then.
would you happen to have a RC29 file for download? i've tired about 4 different files

im a bit confused myself. i updated my phone to froyo via odin the other day and since then ive had force close loops and been unable to use any apps. when i boot into recovery mode and apply sdcard:update.zip as i was advised i get this message:
E:failed to open /mnt/internal_sd/update.zip (no such file or directory)
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted
i assumed this was a file that was already supposed to be on my phone. i also assumed this was the reason im having the force closes as i am unable to format my sd card or delete anything from it.
Normal method is download to PC Connect phone in USB mass storage mode and transfer file to Phone sd card as update . Might need to rename the file if not update .
Power phone on via Recovery mode and navigate clockwork recovery to update.zip .

dud first download any ROM(like Darky i prefer or DOC) and keep the file in your internal sdcard say in /sdcard/download.
Then goto recovery mode and install from sdcard-> choosed zip from sdcard-> then card to the zip file location /sdcard/download, then select the file and instal.
you can move to folders using ur volume up and down key.
You can find ROM's in [URL="http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=665"/URL]
Enjoy..
When your in recovery what does it say ??? does it say 'clockwork recovery' or summit like 'android recovery system <3e>
First step would be to read the FAQs as you are trying to start at the middle instead of the beginning .
What exactly are you trying to achieve .

Signature error is caused by trying to install an unsigner update.zip on recovery 3e. if you want help you should:
FIRST: read FAQS and Walktrough. When you read and understand them, you may proceed to doing what you want.
SECOND: Take time to WRITE every informations needed, like your GOALS and what has been done as of yet.
Asking for "update.zip" is like going to the garage and asking for an oil filter without telling the make, brand and year of your car. You might end up with an oil filter for a compressor instead of what you need.
THIRD: Don't do anything until you trully understand what you are doing. Or you might end up bricking your device (and blaming samsung for it?!)

[Q] Unable to copy open recovery files?

Hey all,
I'm trying to get 2.2 on my milestone (Purchased from New Zealand) and I've been having a bit of trouble following this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=983516
Sadly enough points 1 to 7 in the install open recovery part are fine. It's just RSD lite restarts the phone and I try to copy the files across that it kicks up a bit of a fuss.
I open the SD card folder and when I try to copy anything across it brings up a warning saying that it cannot copy the files as the device has stopped responding or has been removed. I thought it might have been to do with the OTA update problem that's listed, but doing that doesn't seem to help either.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance!
Ok, so I have now been able to copy everything across. - I had to rename all the files then change the names back once it's on the sd card... odd.
Anyway, so I've now restarted it using the power and camera key and I can see the update.zip option.
However when I run it it comes up with an error and aborts:
E:EOCD marker occurs after the start of the EOCD
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted
Not a clue what to do from here, so any advice will be much appreciated. - And if there is any other info that's needed.

That means that you don't have a Vulnerable Recovery installed. What's your bootloader version? If it's 90.78, you can flash this VR via RSD Lite (make sure you have the Motorola USB drivers installed) http://android.doshaska.net/rootable
That's brilliant! - I'll give that a go and let you know if it works. Thanks for the help!
Just to update, it's worked perfectly and I'm now running 2.2. Thanks for the help!
I can't seem to get to the marketplace for flash, but I'm sure I can figure that out.
Cheers
Good to hear! Have you considered flashing a ROM? There are some good ones out there!

[ROOT] Samsung Galaxy Pocket (GT-S5300)

Hi guys,
Rooting this device is just unfairly easy. What you have to do is download the update.zip for the galaxy pocket (see below) and place it into the root of you phone (I think thats somewhere at /mnt/sdcard (at my phone atleast)). Then put off your phone and boot into recovery mode (VOLUME UP+HOME+POWER). Click apply update from sdcard (navigate with volume, select with home button) and at the top there should be the update.zip . Just select it , press home and wait a little while. Press reboot and BOOOOOM youre rooted. You can check this by searching for the app Superuser between your installed apps.
(download update.zip: http://www.mediafire.com/?oh8h3aob7mja9mk )

Do put it in SD ( Not in SD-ext) . Also use CWM recovery. If it is nor working , Flash using PC with Odin
With this method, do you still need to put the device into usb debugging mode before you power down, and reboot into download mode?
Good day guys.
I need help in rooting this phone.
I've been trying to do that three-button combo to get in to recovery, but every time I do, the phone just boots straight to Android.
Is there any other way to get to the recovery menu?
By the way, the Vol_Down button is damaged, it cannot be used.
After rooting phone vibrates randomly (one 1 sec vibration followed by 2 shorter vibrations). Any ideas how to solve this problem?
Same problem here with random vibrations after rooting.
i cannot download the link any alternatives?
