Need Help with GPS on a xv6900 - Touch CDMA Android Development

Hi,
I'm new here-ish, I've lurked quite abit and love this website. I have a verizon xv6900 (vouge) and around december/ january I loaded a android build called "cupcake" after a while it crashed and my sd card went loopy and I had to do a long format to it. Anyway this morning I found the time to load Myn's "Donut" android build and I am super happy with it. So that said I know my way around WinMo and Android, I read somewhere the xv6900 is GPS capable but I can't seem to find anything solid on the matter.
Does anyone know if there is a GPS crack and if so can it work with the "Warm Donut" build I have now?
Thanks,
James

if you are with verizon, getting GPS working is a pain, but do-able. best to find the threads in other parts of this forum to get it working in windows mobile, once you have it working there, it will work in android - even after you flash to nand. easiest way imho.

third time I've posted this link in two weeks... tatnai, is this verizon-specific problem faq worthy?

Follow that guide to a T and you'll be good to go. When GPS doesn't work no matter what, do that. It takes a few hours but it will work if you follow all the steps.

believe so, adding it.

Thanks for the prompt reply guys. I am weary of the coke unlocker as when I used it on my old xv6900 (the one I got the day they came out) it bricked my phone. It booted once after being "unlocked" but had no radio and after a few minutes it crashed and would not boot past the verizon splash screen. I had to find a stock ROM to put on the sd card and even then it only worked once. I had to send it in and get a replacement phone. This one seems to be more cooperative but I'm not messing with the NAND. One bad experience like that is enough to keep me from trying again.

I followed the mentioned post with my xv6900 and GPS works wonderfully now!

Need help on if i should go from Official 1.5 (Cupcake) to other builds...

i am really new to this g1 root stuff, i have cupcake 1.5, and i see that alot of the custom builds have some pretty cool stuff. but am wondering if they are better than cupcake, how do i go about changing, and also i have no idea how to "root" my phone, so if anyone has time to explain in detail how to do this, i would really appreciate it. i need to know step by step how to go from cupcake to jf1.51ADP(best ive seen) without making it look hard...lol
Step 1. Search.
Step 2. Read through the 2534 threads that cover this exact question.
Example: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480
here ya go

Info on the builds
litterally follow the instructions, step by step without missing anything out
I only moved across from 1.5 to jv1.5 adp last week and thought it would be hard to do, but actually found it very easy once i read the instructions, downloaded everything first, and then went through it step by step...

since then already read on how to change bootimages, got the files working under vista64 and updated the images, then found out doing themes is same as updating firmware and as long as remember to use theme for build it shouldn't be too hard to do..
Only thing I've noticed is down to about 46mb compared to normal 1.5, but would guess this is because of all the other features so not too bothered about it
Can I do all of this with a 1g sd card or do I need to get larger one first

yes u can, but what do u think?
i had to grab a 4gig for my music, mp4's, wallpaper, and APP2SD. i need to get an 8gig so i can add more mp4's.
i was lucky i got an 8gb plus standard 2gb when i got my phone via t-mobile uk. Only thing is the 8gb is a class 2 card, so just ordered a class 6 with adapter for £20, could have paid about £12 more for a 16gb with adapter (may still get it) as daughter as DS so should work in that

yeah i believe it's flash 9 right now. doesnt work on all pages yet but better than nothing.
hero flash
its not the best but it good enough for now...... it can load most pages that have flash, but its flash heavy site u will have hard time interacting with that page.
Its been asked quite a few times so hopefully searches will point to this thread in the future. As kusotare has mentioned, Adobe are working on it and even made parts of Flash open source for others to work on it.
Hero has it but its only Flash 9 but soon enough (most likely on better hardware) there will be much better flash support in terms of speed and usability.
Is it just me but i rilly don't care about flash on my phone.
i so know im about to get flamed for saying this ^ haha

Rooting an unlocked phone

hey there. I am about to buy an htc dream which is already unlocked. I want to root my phone so I was wondering if downgrading then rooting it would affect my unlocked status in any way?
Don't worry, your phone will still remain unlocked.
alright sweet, i was just a little worried because on another site (android forums) a user was saying that it may lose its unlocked status.

You might wanna wait though for upcoming phone in 2010 like Nexus that was rumored to be 199 unlocked but who knows might be less than 400 bux
My point is wait for something better since dream has very limited HW.
well i live in canada and we usually dont get access to nice phone right away, right now i am running an lg neon which is less than desirable. This would be my first smart phone so i will probably get it and keep it till 2011 or so. I appreciate your opinion though for sure.
Could I also get an answer for a thread link to the easiest method of rooting? I have heard about the instantroot.apk, would this work with an htc dream?

If you mean the GSM version then use this guide, it has a nice vid that should help out.
http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/22/how-to-root-the-mytouch-3g-or-g1-in-one-click/
Follow each step and dont skip any.The GSM Dream cant be used on rogers or telus i think, not sure if they use CDMA(no sim)
There is no CDMA Dream Never heard of telus but Rogers is GSM fo sho.
i want to use it with fido (fido's parent company is rogers (they use sim)) would this still work? also does this work with all firmwares?
Will what work? If your phone accepts the SIM for the carrier you want to use now then it always will.. If not then you'll need an unlock code. Try the one click root method using flashrec.apk and report back if that doesn't work....
alright cool, im buying the phone on friday so ill report back later. (using the method in the video to root my htc dream)
Could someone please explain what the difference between recovery and rom is.

A rom is like Win7 or linux and recovery mode is like DOS/CMD or maybe safe mode on a PC.The rom is flashed and the recovery mode is needed to flash custom roms from here and to flash themes.
ok sweet, you guys are actually a HUGE help in helping me understand this. So after i follow that video my phone will be "rooted" After that I go to install the latest rom from CG. Do i use the files in the video (the recovery file) or something better out now? also should i use the linda file manager he talks about or astro?
also what is DOUNT and cupcake.

google names the updates after pastries. 1.5 is cupcake (1st version to have a soft keyboard) next is 1.6 donut (supports different screen sizes, new market, a bit snappier) and the latest is 2.0 eclair (what the droid has. not out for any other phones yet. refined browser, car home, and other cool features like navidation, you can get navigation on donut too though trough the market.)

about the navi, i heard that it only works in canada after a workaround but I would assume that it needs 3g for it to work which i do not have in my plan.

Since I do not have data I probably should not download this because the only internet i will be using is wifi. Does this phone have an option to turn off all data, to prevent accidental usage. (like the iphone)
Since I do not have data in my plan is their any reason for me to get this? i would think that google maps will suffice.
could somone also please exlplain SPL, from what i have read it is somesort of compatibility with roms, how can i check mine and does the latest CGM require a high SPL

Magics will be given to dream owners.
You should have gotten the magic since it has more ram and will be supported longer with updates.
You can always use search button or even simple google search:
"Rogers Dream+Root" heres one

Well.. I use AT&T's 3G, as I live in the US. So, I had to "import" it from Canada. I already have a jailbroken iPhone 3G S. So, I really don't want another touch screen phone with the same form factor. The G1 has the physical keyboard and seems like it could make a pretty good back-up phone. Do you think it's pointless for me to keep this G1, even if I get the latest and smoothest ROM available???

Seems like you got the phone just for the KB and not the OS. You just need to read carefully so you dont end up bricking your phone.

The HTC Dream is the only phone with Android that I can think of that has support for AT&T's 3G network AND a physical keyboard. The BACKFLIP is coming out, but ... yeah, I'll pass on the whole MOTOBLUR OS. Also, what are my chances of bricking the phone? Seeing as I've never done this before and have no clue where to start.

You can worry about that later your jumping the gun already and your phone is still stock.
First you need to root and if your successful then you can worry about using roms.

Verizon GPS on Android NAND

Ok, I'm getting tired of my apps requiring GPS. How do I get it running on Verizon? I have the Alltel Vogue, ran their stock ROM before running Coke and flashing to various Android builds, running Super Froyo RLS1(soon RLS2). Sorry for the stupid question, but what is the simplest way to do this. I am pretty fluent in the computer.
If your fluent in computer why didn't you think to read the frequently asked questions??? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=628353 Post 2 Question 12 i have it running fantasticly different nbh files and diferent android versions provide different quality. basicly you install old version coke install sprint stock rom then new version of coke install newest verizon rom then install newest radio then a custom wm rom then flash android and never let any stock roms customize the phone.
You have to be kidding me. This is the only way to get gps? I think I'd rather cut my balls off before embarking on this tedious journey... Wish there was a quick fix :/ There go my hopes of having gps.

Good luck. I did it a while back and had GPS working for about a month.....then without ever flashing the GPS Killer-Verizon Rom, it just stopped working. I tried everything to get it back....with no luck.
I did all that, no dice.

After performing the Verizon GPS fix, search the forum for 'service programming apk'. The thread where that got posted had some great info. I get GPS locks, on Verizon, in 30 seconds or less out in the car. Indoors is another story, of course.
Too bad this process couldn't be somehow scripted. The length of the process and the iffy results is what is keeping me from trying as well.
