Hey Guys,
Blast me as I know you will --- I just got my n1 for ATT last week after converting from a BB9700;
Questions -
(1) After rooting what is the best mod to do --- everyone has something to say buy I am debating from Cynagen vs ModaCo..
(2) Radio upgrades, Is there a new n latest one for my verison of N1
!!
Try "Search"......and wrong section to post this...
I was in the same situation as you! Just got rid of my 9700 and got a N1
I've been playing with Cyanogen 5.0.5.3 and more recently, 5.0.6.1-testing with the new .33.2 Undervolted/Overclocked/Extra RAM kernel. Everything is very snappy compared to stock and I couldn't be happier
I'm still looking around for radio roms

I'm going to recommend that you NOT ROOT YOUR N1.
Stick with the un-rooted phone for as long as you can.
First determine WHY you want to root.
Do you know shell scripting? You know much/little about Unix/Linux? Are you a power user? Are you an iPhone iBasher?
I've rooted and unlocked all of my HTC phones for the past few years, because I know what I'm doing. I read and read and read, searched searched searched these forums for reasons why I should or shouldn't do this or that.
You are new to these forums. New to Androidâ„¢.
I say you should play with your new phone for a few months.
Continue reading here about Cyanogen, Modaco, Enomther, apps2sd, rooting, radios, overclocking, etc.
If and when you learn ENOUGH by reading, searching, slimming, and searching and reading some more ... if you feel you want to root your Nexus One - by all means, DO It MAN!

I will tell you why 95% of people want to root on the Nexus One. No need to ask a prospect.
The reason is because they want cyanogenmod!
You advice is poor rooting is child play compared to 360 modding.
N1 modding is key to enjoying ones phone.
I have to admit, I rooted my Nexus right away.
Having said that, I spent almost a year on my G1 without rooting it. At first I didn't know it was an option. After I started reading about it, I started to realize that it was probably a wise thing to do. It then took me a few weeks of reading to figure out what I actually wanted to do to my phone before I took the leap and finally rooted it and installed CM which made my G1 experience exciting again.
I mention all this because I agree with OrganizedFellow. Spend some time getting to know how Android works before rooting and adding new features. It will help you appreciate the hard work of the devs even more when you do put custom ROMs on your phone.
If you can't wait, I recommend CM. As for the radio, if your phone doesn't lose 3G and stays connected like it should, don't worry about changing the radio. I "had" to change my radio to try getting rid of my 3G issues that the phone shipped with.

in contrast, if youre not super comfortable with going through the whole process just dip your toes in the water first by trolling forums and reading, you can after all brick your phone. I agree with organizedfellow, take your time and find out why and what benefits. i have not rooted yet but leaning closer as i read more and find that i really need the tethering in case im stuck with no wireless while out on a job (also the different color trackball would be sweet). Out side of those im pretty happy with everything stock, add to it with the rumors of himem coming in a future ota update i think i will be set....just that damn tethering...
You cant go wrong with any ROM available right now, but I highly suggest you try Enomther's ROM as well.

are you serious? nobody said anything about the comparison of rooting an android device (software) to modding an xbox 360 (hardware).
So by your logic, someone should jump right into modding their console because replacing the engine in a Boeing 747 is harder.
To the OP. Take the advice of those suggesting that you wait. For starters, you can see if your device has any hardware issues. Yes HTC is warrantying unlocked devices but why not avoid that hurdle and sit on your device for a week or three to just be sure. While you do that, you can read all that you can stomach in these forums and plan your best course of attack.
Welcome to the fray.

+1 that is some great advice, and I would take it. I was just like you and I last week I rooted my ATT N1. I love it, but I must say that I have put a lot more time into it than I expected. I spent a month before I got the N1 looking into this whole scene and I felt that I had the reasons to root. I would at least spend the time searching forums until all your questions that you have are answered. No body is going to be able to give you a perfect ROM that is for you because there are many different ones out there and what is good for one person may not be the best for another.
I would spend the time to get to know everything before you get going. I would say I know my way around technology pretty well, but if I didn't have the nice folks from this forum I would of had a very hard time with things. When people tell you to "search" they really aren't trying to be rude. To root your phone is a personal choice that only you can make. You are the one that spent the money and people spend a bunch of time making our HTC using lives that much greater.
I spent almost 4 hours last week rooting and unlocking and I have spent easily 30-40 since then learning all that I can learn and I must say that for me it was the right decision because I learned a bunch of things about my phone and now when I have a problem I am comfortable that I can find a way to fix it myself. If I don't then I know where to turn to "search" for help.
If you have any questions I would love to help you out although I am far from a master at this trade. I spent a bunch of time and I have a whole notebook of printouts that I have found in various places all over the web (especially this site) I would be more than happy to send them to you, but just do yourself a huge favor and research, research, research, research, and then when you feel you are done research some more. It will help you in the long run.
Have fun with your phone and good luck
By the way I am running the latest Cyanogen and a few other things. I am having a blast with .apk like the HTC keyboard, and I must say that for me wireless tethering is the greatest thing in the world. I have only touched the very end of this world, and I am so thankful for all the people out there that spend countless hours making our lives a lot easier. I had a bunch of help last week and people really didn't need to spend the time to help me out. I have also messed around with the latest Modaco Sense ROM and I like that a lot as well.

Hi guys,
Picked up my wizard this morning. I knew out of the box that it wasn't going to be what I wanted and after reading for about a hour today I have sucessfully sim and cid unlocked my phone and flashed it to the 2.3 custom rom I found here.
The info on the forum cut my learning curve by about 90% so thx guys!

You get my vote for Noobie of the year!!!!
You came,
You read,
You flashed your Rom!
Thanks for showing us that sometimes it does happen this way.
Welcom to XDA-Dev and enjoy the Wiz...
I second kyphur's words!
Congrats and thank you for taking the time to research first!

Yes. Excellent job. Now you should work on seeing if you can fix the dropped calls issue with that ROM while using data apps
Good to see some successful posts.. out of many unsuccessful ones.
impressive! didn't think it was possible anymore but I have reason to continue living! thanks ec9!

That is amazing to see now. Very impressive.
hey!!
ec9, i feel exactly the same way as you!! i started the same way as you did. this device is awesome, i bought it the 1st week it was out went around looking how to customize it. after reading a lot on here ive successfully unlocked and flashed my 2nd ROM! it was moliskis rom. awesome site... Thank you all for making it what it is!
Just f*ucking Google it...
I too, came to XDA on a chance Google search. After spending several hours reading and chasing various links around, I identified my device as a G4, performed the reception fix, CID-unlocked it via the $42 IMEI site, and flashed it with Molski 3.0.0.0 -- NO PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER. (Except for missed calls, non-responsive buttons, etc., but that's ALSO covered in a separate thread)
XDA is an amazing resource, with some incredibly talented people. All I can say to other noobs is to be patient, thorough, and to READ READ READ.
The answers are there, you just need to calm down and LOOK. Don't try SH*T until you're confident you know what you're doing. (Excuse my language)
I LOVE XDA-dev!!
Very Impressive.
Great !
This is a great forum for ANYONE to learn about their devices and see how much they can push to do the things that the devices can do.
I think right out of the box, these devices are kinda limited in their potential. The great guys here in this site make it better and help these devices achive higher grounds.
I am very glad that you had a great experience. I have been this forum for a little over a year and always had great help and experience.
I'm also glad to see someone actually knows how to READ!!
Even though I've had my Wizard for almost 10 months now, xda was one of the FIRST sites I bookmarked after getting it. Even though I registered right away, I read threads for several weeks before ever posting anything.
I had CID and SIM unlocked and flashed to two of Summiter's ROMs within the first 6 weeks I had my phone. That was all it took to become addicted. If I'm not on here reading every day, I go into "information withdrawal".
I'll never be at the level some of these gurus are at, but I'm learning some of the "how-to's" little by little -- and, expanding my knowledge of how to do things that I wouldn't have DREAMED of doing with this phone a year ago.
I'll admit it -- I'm HOOKED!!
Congrats on picking up the information so quickly. I'll have to echo what's already been said here about a GREAT first post by a NOOB!!
Im glad that some newbie's are able use the info here and in the immortal words of the crystal method "there is hope"
We must all give credit to all those ROM cooks for all there hard work and diligence and to the other members that have made it so simple to understand and learn through there trials and errors.

Sorry, I have to totally dissagree with all the praise you are getting.
How can anyone know that thier new device is not 'going to be what they wanted' in less than a day? You will have no base line to measure changes against.
I believe everyone should be made to use their new device for a month, dead standard! I can't help singgering, laughing and shaking my head in disbelief when I read about people complaining that they have to reset 4-5 times a day, that their device freezes, crashes, conflicts, or things don't work, etc, etc. Then they abuse HTC, MS and anyone else they can think of - some people curse and abuse their device, describing it as crap and shouldn't be sold like this.... then they tell you all the changes and mods they have made, and the rubbish they have installed and.... WHAT DO YOU EXPECT!!!!
My Hermes is dead standard and runs like a dream - constantly impressed by it.
I have no quams about people wanting to mod, develop, experiment, etc. but please use your device in original config for long enough to know if you are making improvements or making a mess.
IMHO anyway.
Welcome!
Since a longer time I'm reading the forum and thanks to you guys I learned a lot about my Wizard. I know now how to unlock and "unsimlock" my phone, how to flash it and many many more.
Before I will ask a question I'm reading and searching a forum to find that what I need, that's way until now I didn't post anything, so I want just to say hello to all members.
People gatherd here are very talented and helpfull people.
Best regards.

If you buy a truck for off-roading and find out the first day that it doesn't have 4 wheel drive, should you continue to drive it for 30 days to see if it will magically appear?
Congrats for researching, mate... I dunno if anyone else feels this way, but there seems to have been an influx of semi-retarded users posting recently saying things like "why won't my Sony Ericsson P990 flash???"... ok it's a bit of an exaggeration, but they're still bloody dum questions!
Like you when I found this site, I spent at least 2 days researching before I even tried to modify anything and everything I searched for came up with appropriate answers... in DEPTH! And the pay-off was quick and painless as a result... my universal now works - full stop. With the O2 ROM, it was a bag of poo compared to what it was made for, and I say that after 8 months or so of usage with original ROM.
I will be pointing resident idiots to this thread too from now on. Many thanks for your intelligence, it's what contributes to this site being as great as it is
Geez. this is the first time I've seen this post. That was like the XDA Developers Hall of Fame at the beginning. Anyway, congrats to the original poster and all who learned the right way. Mods can we re-title this thread "The Perfect Newbie" and make it a sticky to replace some of the outdated ones?
To be or not to be Noob ........
There are loads skulkers like myself that have never bothered to post.
I bow to the superior knowledge of the Windows Mobile gods and keep my trap shut until I have learned / read enough to say something intelligent on the topic.
Most things are clearly labled and easy to find.
Some of the useless post just add clutter and makes it difficult to find the truely useful info.
There will always be impatient PFY's and noob's that can't be bothered to search.
Search + Google is your friend.
I got help here to root it so I could get a proggy on there that would allow me to get fonts in larger sizes and yes, I'm very happy. HOWEVER, my HOT SPOT feature is not working and I"m guessing that pimpin' it is what did it and NO, I'm too stupid to fix it and the guy that helped me rooting it had no idea what to do. I'm close to Charlotte, NC and I was wondering if there's anyone around here that could help me? Ie, rooting it AND getting my hot spot stuff to work which is one of the reasons I bought this one and paid a small fortune for it.
Thanks and yes, I would be glad to pay a lil' sumptin' for it, take you out to lunch or help YOU out in any way.
George
you may be a noob, but seriously you didn't really expect anyone to have sympathy did you?, we all started somewhere.. hint: start by reading the stickies
God forbid someone would have sympathy but NO, the crying icon was there to spruce the thread up.
I have gotten great help in forums and I've run into a lot of a$$holes if that answers your question?
As for reading the stickies, I have a reading comprehension problem so that doesn't work for me. Of course, you may want to say that this is bull$hit
and I'm just trying to make it easy on my self and yes, I am but no, the reading thing is not bull and reading instructions are useless.
Last time, I had someone talk me through it in a chat and it worked but took around TWO hours. This would not have happened if it had been
done through here or e mail. You'd be talking days or weeks just getting the thing rooted.
However, I"m not sure how helpful your reply is? Plenty of that around the web. Lots of replies in help forums but LITTLE help. Mostly people that
think their $hit don't stink and that they can say anything just 'cause they're anonymous. Sounds like my neighbor. She used to talk all kinds of
$hit about EVERYONE and tell me how she stood up to someone and told them this or that to their face but she never did. Just told ME how damn
cool she was but I never saw any proof of it.
Yeah, it's easy to have an opinion online and make comments about any damn thing...
guiri_too,
Post in your local listings (Craigslist, for example). I'm sure there's probably someone in your area that can help you out.
An online forum isn't really the best setting for what you need. You need someone that knows what they're doing (no offense) to look at your phone and do what needs to be done. Otherwise... read through the threads, find rooting/modding instructions, get a custom recovery image on, make a backup, and flash a new ROM.
If you didn't know what you were getting yourself into, you shouldn't have done it. I don't mean that in a disrespectful way, either.
If I ONLY stuck to buying things I completely understood, I would NOT have a damn thing today and no worries, I wasn't insulted.
As for craigslist, haven't found much there but morons but I can give it a try.
However, I KNOW there's plenty of knowledge here, the trick is to find it. LIke I said, I got great help rooting it but now I see there's some problem which I ASSUME is from the rooting.
Note, NOTHING against the guy that helped me out, he did a great job and was very patient so I have no complaints, it's just that now that I found this out, I'd like to get it fixed.
Georg
well man, what you can do is give us some details too.. are you on a custom rom, or stock w/only root, also do you have stock recovery or kosh(sp) or Amon Ra's
If you know how to check you can simply go to about phone and check in there if you are on custom, usually in kernal it will have the devs name.. to find you bout recovery you get the app quickboot(in app market) and hit recovery if you have list of options and i mean a list then you have a custom recovery, if you only have 3 options then its stock..
If you got custom rom& recovery, then you can flash a different rom, this could have broken wifi or something along the way.. so what you do is find a custom rom you like( i say go with enomther) that one is close to stock as possible but with all perks taht are really needed
im new to the n1 communtiy as i barely got my n1 rooted, but i had my g1 for over a year or so and had bout 3 of those, and not much has change except the way to root it
Okie dokie Spanky, I'll see if I can figure it out and post back. I was hopin' someone local that's got more brains than I could pimp it but that's what I get for livin' in the boonies I guess
I know there's a lot of discussion on this topic about the Incredible S but was wondering on the status of root for the Incredible 2(US-Verizon)?
It's my understanding these devices are pretty much the same, with minor changes to the software (ie: branding and bundling). As far as I've seen, my I2 has many of the same characteristics and behaviors (in terms of shell access, temp root, etc) as the IS as far as what I've seen in this forum (I need to dig around more, though). I suspect whatever exploit happens to work on the IS will work on the I2.
Of course, I could be very wrong.
I've been under the same impression. When inc s gets root, so will we.

I cant wait. I want CM7GB like I had n my Eris.
I'm liking sense 2.1. We were all trying to get it to work well on the inc 1 with varying levels of success. I'd like to be able to use titanium to restore over 100 apps and also like to get rid of this stupid amount of verizon bloat. Have you guys ever seen so much bloat!? I thought the inc 1 was bad...

I came from an Eris as well. Was running CM7 on it, and I miss it dearly. Tried switching my I2 to LauncherPro so I could at least have the familiar environment (I have a registration code I paid for because I like it) and when I rebooted to clear running apps and be on just LP, apps started not working right (many would FC on start). Switched back to Sense and rebooted and all was working again. This annoys me greatly.

u sure u got the right version of LPP installed?
i switched out my sense to LPP ( i too have a registration code ) and all was working just fine for me
did u try to swap out ur LPP?
It's not looking too good for us, TeamAndIRC's JCASE spent about 20-30 minutes with my DInc2 and he tweeted his conclusion - "Yes incredible2 is as screwed as incredibleS, possibly worse. Psneuter works, gingerbread didn't (probably can with some work)"
he is out of town atm, gonna try again once he gets back, i really really really want 2.3.4/gtalk on our ffc

I got it straight from the Android market. If I run it after letting Sense start, everything works fine. However, if I don't let Sense start, or start manually, things just break. More than likely there's some service not starting that is launched by Sense that is required for certain things to work properly that ties into the framework. This is the kind of behavior that prompted Google to stop source code early access for partners (they should not be modifying the framework). My goal is to reduce resource usage, not add another layer of resource usage due to a personal preference.
Really, I just want to return to CM. Wasn't perfect on the Eris, but allowed me to do whatever I wanted.

My reply...
I would have to say I'm horribly upset that there isn't a thread or any support for this phone. Yes, there are people who purchased this phone...some because of warranty issues, some because of upgrades (though I would rather wait a while...since there are so many choices coming.), and others because this is their intro to the android world. Why not dedicate the same time and effort you've dedicated to all of the other phones...yes, it may be a challenge, it may even be a waste of time...but for those people out there who want...no need root and global...this phone is a success. Incredible 1 + newer 1ghz processor + 4 inches + global and a little extra = Epic Success (esp. if root was available). So as a consumer, a business man, a member of this great android community...I beg of you DEVs please assist us. We're here and we're waiting. America.
Just saying
There is forum made for this phone as its almost the same as the IS, with some minor differences. There is also no forum for the desire cdma version... Anyhow the devs who don't own this phone ( or DS or any of the new ones) have a hard time testing there creations. We have some devs who don't own it and its extremely hard to accomplish something this way. Furthermore all the devs of the newer phones try to work together for the s-off. Rom development is a completely different story.
The time for the cdma version belongs in this forum also, so I don't really see any problems...

What makes you think no one is working on this phone? As has been pointed out, there are people working on getting forums started here, and there are people getting their hands on these phones and starting to tinker with them (like me). Keep in mind this was JUST released LAST WEEK.
It's not useful to post these kinds of things as they don't really contribute to the discussion for making progress. It takes time and should we get lucky and the IS exploit works on the I2, bonus! Give it time.

Oh I'm sorry...I thought it was okay to post an opinion on a blog...I didn't think anyone would consider it a threat...especially since all of the current comments center around it, and I just elaborated. If you would like to attack people for posting their opinion about a certain situation...maybe you should do on your own site. Last time I checked...this was AMERICA...**** yeah, going to save the m**herf***in world...America...F*** yeah...lick my *Meow* and suck on my b*lls. Lmao...and that's my reply for you. Please and thank you. I don't hate...I just state.
Oh and one more thing...thanks for contributing to the discussion...seeing that your reply to my original post was very useful. Now back to the subject I just browsed Droidforums and notice a Incredible 2 section...I believe in XDA, and have been a ghost member for a while. I know they are working on it, and it was never my intent to come off as a douche. I was just stating an *OPINION*, I'm keeping an eye on the development of the IS and the general post section of the Incredible. I'm alert, and advise all to continue to stay alert...maybe in a week or two, we'll see some results.
Wow. No disrespect... But Americans ARE stupid.... Ok maybe its just you. We all know the i2 is so similar to the IS that discussion for both can take place here. The same thing happened with the milestone/droid thread. Full stop. Can this thread be locked up?
Sent from my HTC Incredible S using XDA App
Uhh, the Milestone and Droid were vastly different in the entire bootloader business. This made the threads ENTIRELY different..... For now it's like Droid 2 and Milestone 2. Both are stuck at square 1 with a locked bootloader.
If it's offensive to explain complaints about lack of progress is annoying and ask for patience, then I have no idea how to not be offensive (yeah, I'm a "dumb American") so I'll refrain from posting here anymore.
So I've done a lil searching and can't quite figure out what I want to know....
Lil history on what happened today:
My S4 screen cracked and I was attempting to replace it and broke the digitizer so called up Asurion and they said the S4's aren't in stock so they are giving me the One as a comparable replacement....
I got the Thunderbolt when it first came out and ran it till I got the S3... not gonna lie the Thunderbolt was revolutionary but the S3 was epically revolutionary then I got the S4 after Sammy/VZ put out that update that locked the phone down hard and I've learned to get used to Hyperdrive and have started to love it but I still miss all the flashing etc so I'm taking the opportunity to give HTC another shot essentially to see which device I will get next the S5 or One(2)?
So my question to the One community is how do things work here? How is flashing? How much better are these custom roms than stock? Can I even flash bc I went 3 months b4 safestrap cracked it for us on the S4..?
If it is gonna be possible to flash what do ya'll recommend? Favorites? 2nd's? Link to process for rooting etc?
Thanks ya'll!

You can forget everything that you've learned with the Sammy. Flashing is a breeze on the one and development is amazing. There's stickies in the Q&A section on unlocking, rooting, and flashing a recovery. You will need to read and follow instructions. We expect everyone to carry their own weight around here, and we don't do a lot of hand holding, the development community is too big for that.
Also, the One is nothing like the Thunderbolt was. Really it's like comparing the Thunderbolt to a flip phone, that was a long time ago in the evolution of technology, I loved the Bolt, but it's apples and oranges with the One. If you're considering a Verizon One, you will want to check specifically the Verizon One section, as the development will be more limited as the rest of the world is on a different. That's not to say that there aren't things in here that will work on the One and apply to the One, but Verizon people may give you a different opinion as they are on a device with small market share as far as consumers and developers.
If you want to learn about development and flashing on your device I advise against purchasing from a company working so hard to eliminate the unlocking of their device, and go with a company that's more geared towards an active development community.
Well yes I am with VZ so it will be a VZ One and yes they tuck me off with all this lockdown garbage! So is their a specific vz HTC one forum or is it all in this sub forum? Im going to start doing research on how to work it all... I appreciate all your help and advice!
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
So, I used to play around a lot with my old htc desire 3-4 years ago, during its golden days of software development here on xda. I know my way around flashing, rooting, radios, kernels, etc. pretty well I'd say.
This time with my new nexus I'll probably keep things simple, I like stock lollipop and getting updates faster. But in any case, what are (in your opinion) the modifications that needs to be done to this phone to enjoy a perfect experience? Talking about things like would you unlock bootloader right away? Root? New kernel? What makes it better for you?
In my opinion the "must have" is to unlock bootloader then root and finally buy the Light Flow app to enable notifications led, because when I'm for example play game in fullscreen I can't see latest notifications. It's very useful.
When mine arrives in a couple of days I'll be unlocking, flashing SlimLP and elementalx as soon as its out of the box. Really, you just have to find what you like. Stay stock for a while to get used to it. If you want quicker updates, go to aosp
Unlock Bootloader
Flash TWRP
Create Stock Back Up (EFS and what not)
Flash Root through Recovery
You are golden.
Now you can go flash happy with all of the wonderful things on the site.
Personally > I am running CM12 / Faux Kernel
There are so many of these threads, you can go to any one of the existing threads and already see whats out there. This is nothing different than one of those "best ROM / kernel" threads. Everybody is just going to recommend whatever they're using because thats what they're comfortable with. What another person uses doesn't necessarily mean that its what you should be using.
For sure you should, bootloader unlock (you'll have to enable "OEM unlock" in developer options) before anything and if you want to, you can decrypt your phone (you can find that out by finding the thread).
If you want to enjoy the fullest experience, browse through the forums and find out what appeals to you. Think of it as shopping through a store to find something you're interested in, the only difference is that you don't have to pay.

This seems quite reasonable. Any particular reasons why you should run a stock rom with root privileges? Also, do you get OTA with root (I( cannot remember this one)?

XDA being XDA I guess, telling you that the thread can be answered by searching, lol. In my mind, this is a different kind of question, I want to know what are the simplest modification you can do to get the best experience, let's say to get the best with minimum effort, if you want. Anyway, I do appreciate your input, I did thing that unlock and maybe even custom recovery are a must (at least, you need those if you want to start doing anything else, IIRC).

That's because searching is a rule here. I browse the forums and help people out all the time and posts like this show up on a everyday basis.
The question is not different at all, they all share similar elements to what others have asked and if you read through other people's threads you would have what you were asking for answers in their threads.
In development or using mods, there is no "best." if you want to do anything relating to flash able mods kernels roms then you'll need twrp. It's a necessity. For everything else more than that, you'll have to browse through the forums and find what interests you.
Interests you? Try it. Not happy with it? Try something else. Feeling adventurous? Try something else. The best possible experience is using something new every couple of days until you find that sweet spot where you can settle down with a ROM and kernel set up.
If you're looking for something to narrow down your choices. Look for a kernel or rom based on the following attributes.
How active is the thread? Does the developer release updates often? How many views and posts?
Popularity usually leads to a good experience and it's popular for a reason. Check it out and see why it is so popular. I'm not saying popular is the best but it's a good start.

Same Here!
I'm also going to get one soon. Most probably I'll unlock that effin bootloader without even unboxing the phone completely lol
I would like to try Official CM12 for Nexus 6 first
whats funny about threads like this, and the op as well, is that the op says he knows whats up about flashing and all the good stuff, but goes ahead and asks what he needs to do. lol! the right thing to do would be not to ask what needs to be done, but to play around with the device and do what YOU want to do to your device. not what others think you should do to your device.
Anyway, thanks for all the people that, instead, came here to have a nice discussion! Some comments were rather helpful!

3-4 years ago, xda was also not as popular to this day. People were more independent and didn't rely so much on having information fed to them.
When I first started out on xda, I pretty much lurked on the forums since I was new to flashing anything on my phone. The first phone I had was a g1 and rooting that phone took over 40 minutes using terminal emulator and telnet.
There wasn't a one click root toolkit for that phone. I spent weeks and months learning the ways and when I finally felt comfortable I started helping others. I rarely ever asked any questions unless it was super necessary.
You haven't even purchased the phone, you have all the time in the world to browse through the forums to see what roms and kernels interest you. The resources to your answer is already there, you're just not finding the answer but yet want others to answer for you.

Enough with the snide remarks. The OP is asking for some help. If you don't like the question, move on and don't respond. There is no need to post on every thread you see....
To the OP: There is a ton of information in the N6 fora. Do some searching of specific things and browse around. You'll find all the info you need.
