MicroSD HC Sandisk 16GB not recognized as 16GB. Memory settings of storage card shows 3868MB. This is occuring on two different AT&T Tilt's 8925. One with older ROM.
Any ideas. The microSD card in an adapter shows up on the PC as FAT32 16GB so can't be a defective card??

Repartition using gparted! If still doesn't work it's a fake one.
sounds to me like a cosmetic non-issue.
you see, the software/OS on the phone determines available space and free space using in-memory counters (variables in a programming language). often, the developer might choose a variable type that doesn't have enough "range" to count up to 16GB. so it "overflows" one or more times as it counts up to 16GB, eventually landing on an overflowed value of 3868MB in your case.
if the card is showing up as 16GB on the PC, it is no doubt a 16GB card. on the phone side, you mention you tried it on two different tilts. did you happen to note exactly which ROM versions they were using (its not enough to say "older ROM")? it might be worth trying another ROM if the mentioned tilts were using WM6...maybe this free space counting bug was resolved in WM6.1 and/or later?
just my 2 cents.
flash a newer rom, a 6.5
I got the same problem with another device... and in the end I found that my card was a Chinese fake! They sell you a smaller card reprinted with larger size capacity... but the inside is still "small"! You can use a program called H2TESTW to check its integrity, however.

Hi,
A simple question but I couldn't find it categorically written down anywhere: What is the largest SD card that can be used in an XDAIIi?
Thanks a lot,
James.
Im not sure i know of any limit, but its worth noting that only a Transcend 80x SD card works properly and as far as i know they go up to 1gig.
Any other card (non 80x) causes problems with the XDA IIi and causes it to hang.
Thanks for the info. I've been using San Disk 256Mb cards for a while which seem to work fine (although one did get confused once and thought it contained stuff when it didn't so had to be reflashed).
I'll stick to Transcend when buying a new bigger one.
Thanks,
James.

That is not universally true. I have been using a SanDisk 1.0 GB Ultra II SD card in my XDA IIi for a number of months with no problems whatsoever.
Yeah, in fact i'd go sa far as to say it's not true, I'm using an Integral 60x 1Gb card and have not had any problems whatsoever.
The only problem I have found is that with 1gb cards the XDA2i seems to have a problem when accessing the card and accepting incoming communication at the same time e.g, reading the memory card whilst accepting a call or accessing GPRS. The phone seems to cut power/access to the memory card (disconnects it)and therefore makes the phone hang/freeze. This does not seem to be an issue with 512mb or lower sized cards only 1gb and above. I have tried many different brands and this seems to hold true. For SATNAV applications people advise 512mb cards or lower work best. Again this I have found to be with card accessing issues and 1gb+ cards seem to lose connection, admittedly some cut off slightly faster than others. I use a gb card for most of my apps, but if running TomTom I swap in a 256mb.
ok perhaps i shouldnt have said ONLY transcend cards but i was just trying to highlight that i know that they work fine in the XDAIIi.
Yes there are going to be more brands that work fine too, as far as i know its a voltage issue, anyway im not a htc technician so thats as far as my knowledge goes
I'm using a SanDisk Ultra II 2.0GB card with no problem at all in my Qtek 2020i with O2 rom
I have been doing some reserch into SD Cards because of this problem.
It seems to do with the layers in the card. If the card is of good quality and is a single layer they seem to work OK, if it is dual layer you could have problems.
It has everything to do with current to the card and little to do with card speed.
Single layer cards of high storage capacity are more expensive to produce, because of this even the big brands use dual layer cards.
Interesting stuff about the layers. Thanks for the info.
Has anyone tried the San Disk Ultra II Plus which is the one that can be folded so it can be plugged directly into a USB port too? They look really useful (although are hard to find at the moment at a decent price) as it means you have both USB flash memory and SD combined which I'd find useful when travelling.
Re: Single layer cards
Does anyone know the brands other than Trancsend who use the Single layer card build?
Thx
i'm using a 2GO Maxell SDcard X150 and it works fine.
no pb at all

I have 150x A-Data 2Gb. All is ok too...
I have a no-name 2 Gig crd and no issues (£84 from Novatech). Actually, 1 issue, bloody XDA locks up when removed from cradle more often than not & needs a soft reset. Other than that, zero probs...
Everytime i insert my card it asks me if i want to format it to make it readable? - even though i formatted it in my computer. Also i cant write anything to it when my 8125 recognizes it in a slot. The cars is SanDisk so it should be a good quality.
I'm using a 2GB SanDisk card with no trouble at all. I _didn't_ format it on my PC but rather used it straight out of the box.
Do you still have the same message if you let the 8125 format the card?
i tried doing that and it says that the phone cannot recognize the card.... the weird thing is that the card goes in crooked and the fit isnt perfect i have to push it in hard.....
Quite a few people reporting a problem like this - seems to be fixed with sktools or storage tools (google them demos allow you to format - install on device) and format card on device to fat16.

I have the same problem before, i tried to format it to fat16 and the 2gb minisd was recognized as 1gb instead of 2, tried every solution from getting compatible version of a card reader to re-format using fdisk via DOS., Called the manufacturer and they we're happy to replace it. They advised that it should be re-formatted as fat only and not fat16 via DOS using the card reader.
good to know as i just bought a 2gigger.
The problem is that you formatted it on your PC. USe SKtools to format it on your device and you should be all set. I think the demo version of SKtools allows you to do this stuff.
i use my 2 GIG since i bought the phone almost 4 months ago without any hassle.
Just used the card out of the box without formatting it.
This issue is reported several times and is caused by using a not compatible cardreader on the PC to format the card.
A lot of the (even usb 2.0!!) cardreaders is not capable of reading over 512MB memory cards. If you use a 1Gb or 2GB card on such a reader it will probably say the card is not formatted. WHEN you do format the card using that reader, you wil make it unusable.
 Make sure you format the card via a compatible cardreader to avoid this.
 If you get a 'card not formatted' message, try to read from / write to it in your device first (before attempting to format)
Just got my 2GB card....MDA won't read it.
Camera won't read it.
PC can read it. It was Fat32, I reformatted it to Fat...still a no go in the phone or camera, but works on the PC....what gives?

I have a SanDisk 2Gig card. It worked fine right out of the package. Haven't had any problems with any of the ROMs I've run on my 8125.

my 2GB card works fine, except for the fact that it's stuck in there.. i need to tak it apart and fix the spring loaded latch somewhere in there..
I got a 2GB from Amazon: OEM 2GB MINISD Mini Secure Digital (SD) Card but it did not work on my Cing 8125.
TopRam
I have been using a 2GB miniSD made by TopRam. Works in the 8125 and with my USB card reader no problem since day one. 8125 recognizes the entire 2 gigs (well minus just a few bits...about 99% of the card). Got it off eBay while I was waiting for the phone in the mail. Never needed formatting or anything..worked straight from the package. I was a little worried at first that it wasn't one of the "well known" brands of cards, but there have been no problems whatsoever.
I'm using the Transcend 2Gb 80x MiniSD. Works like a charm.
Keep in mind that SLC flash chips (mainly made by Samsung and a.o. used by Transcend and Mobymemory) have longer lifetime, are faster and consume less power than MLC flash chips. Disadvantage is that SLC is more expensive. Bought my 2GB for approx 62 euros.
Hey guys I`ve bought an Alpine and I want to put a 4GB SD Card in it??
Do you think, it works? Or is the maximium 2 GB, which works in Alpine?
CU
4 gb cards work......mostly.
I've used both the A-Data and the Transcend 4 GB cards on my Alpine. There is only one problem I've experienced. If your 4 GB card is less than half full (i.e. available storage is > 2gb), AND you've configured your camera to save the pictures you take to the SD card directly, then you may experience an error. The error simply says it can't save the SD card. If you card is more than 50% full of other stuff, then there is no problem using the camera application and saving your picutres directly to the SD Card.
I RARELY use my camera, so I really don't care. Plus, I have enough stuff on my SD card so that it never has more than 2 gb of available storage (i.e. its always more than half full). Consequently, this bug in the camera application is really not much of a nussiance.
ok, thank you very much for your reply...
It work, as I had a Kingston 4GB SD Card
without problems??
can you give me some more details about your sd card??
thank you
A 4Gb will work, but it does depend on the make - since, I'm guessing, cheaper makes use cheaper parts. Kingston and SanDisk seem to be pretty good.
I have a generic (samsung oem perhaps?) 4gb SD card and it works fine apart from it seems to be a tight fit in the slot. No problems with it as yet though.
SD card
I used a topram 4GB mini with adaptor and it did not work.
I then bought a Transcend 4GB MMC+ (plus) and it works like a dream.
I hope this helps you.
Watch out that the card is not a sdhc card. SDHC cards look like normally sd cards, but they dont' work on the Alpine.

all sdhc (high capacity) cards have "sdhc" sign so you can easily discern them
only the newest htc devices support sdhc cards
I'm using 4GB Tanscend SD Card with my alpine
and its working fine
Thanks to the advice here, I bought a 4Gb Transcend MMC plus and it works beautifully.
So much space is a real bonus as I have Tomtom maps of Europe, the whole of the USA, 6 or 7 full movies plus 20 or so albums worth of mp3's still with 500mb free for odds & sods.
Hi,
I am using a HAMA 4GB, and it is working more or less fine.
I don't know if it is a card issue or caused by the heat recently in Austria, but my Nav freezes from time to time.
I have to turn the 2020i off and then on, then it works again.
Some days ago, the card suddenly lost some data....
I have a SanDisk 4GB SD Card, however when I put it into my Alpine it doen't seem to recognise it. It just doesn't show up. Can anyone give me any hints on how to force it to look for it or something like that?
Hopefully an easy question for someone to answer! Will the Kaiser read a SanDisk 8GB MicroSDHC card?
On another point, I have a 4GB MicroSD that no device can read anymore. I cannot reformat it as it does not show up on the device (PC, PDA or anything!). Any ideas?

1. yes
2. ??
1. Thats what I have
2. Broken card, throw it away?
Hmmm
1. Been running that for a while.
2. Make sure your PC Reader can support MicroSD before deciding that the PC can't read it (hint - putting the microSD card into the Sandisk larger shell does NOT make it a regular SD card). If you are POSITIVE your computer can read a MicroSD card, and it doesn't register, then toss the card.

Corrected above - the adapter DOES turn a MicroSD into an SD, AND a MicroSDHC into an SDHC. But, not all readers can read the HC cards (4GB and more).

This has been asked many times and the answer remains yes (the same for the 16 GB version - I use one with my TyTN II).

When you say 'anymore', whats changed? Are you still using the same microSDHC -> SDHC adapter that the card came with and a suitable SDHC compatible reader when testing it on your PC? If so, it's time to get in touch with the company that sold it to you for a warranty claim.
I had a similiar problem. While moving some music over to my 8 gig SD brand card it failed after about 3/4 of the files and then dissapeared. I've tried soft reseting and popping the card in and out and I can't get my phone to recognize it.
I need to get a new usb adapter b/c the I don't think the one I have is hc compatable (it's a few years old) so I have no idea if my computer will recognize it directly. Does this sound like a card issue or phone issue.
Running ATT WM6.1 minus bloat with a few programs (all of which have been running for a week or so no problems). Sorry to hijack, I just didn't want to open a new thread and get flamed.
i got a 4gb micro SDHC, its a sandisk. i got it to upgrade from my 2gb sd, i have read that the HC cards (sorry if the card is in the acronym) are compatible with tytn II's.
it wasn't with my original rom, and now i have tried to new roms both of which wont recognise it at all. is there anything i can do?

Since this morning my device is telling me that no Storage Card is inserted. I didn't change anything and the SD has been inside the device all the time. I bought the device around april 2008. I still have to test the card on my PC at home, but I wanted to check what my chances are. What is a bigger change? That the SD card just died on me or that my device has a hardware problem?
Funny thing is that yesterday I flashed to a diffrent ROM. I did a hard reset, still no luck. Flashed with an entirely other ROM, still no luck. So I am hoping its just the SD card that broke. Would be strange if flashing a ROM would cause the SD card hardware inside the device to fail the next day.

My laptop has a SD reader but it doesnt even map the card to a drive like it usually does. Any tools that I can use?
I already ordered a 8 gig MicroSD which should arrive tomorrow.
I'm not ready to blame my Tilt for my mSDHC problems but it sure seems like theres a lot of posts out there here and other places about people having memory card problems with their Tilt. I"m going to try again but if another memory card fails I'm sending my tilt back and hopefully I can demand to at least upgrade to a Fuze for a cost.
Funny this thread came up as my 4 gig card crapped out on me recently and is unrecogniseable to any device after running the sdhc cab on it. But yea, 8 gig works just fine. Using a 16 gig now with smooth sailing
This may just be a case of me being genuinely unlucky in my purchases but humour me anyway!
Like you lot I have an SGS and with all the recent mods regarding sound I like to use it as my mp3 player, so buying a micro sd card for additional storage was a must.
I had a spare 4gb class 2 card lying around so I've been using that for some months. Finally decided to upgrade to a more meaningful 16gb class 4 card.
Ordered one off Amazon through a seller. As soon as I put the card in the phone, it refused to recognise it but my PC, digital camera, old blackberry 9000 and n95 saw it just fine. So I formatted the card in the pc using the downloadable SD Card formatter as some googling suggested this might return the card to a working state. After that the phone saw a 16gb card, so I copied some music onto it, it worked for about 30 mins and then the card died totally. Upon reinserting it into the pc, windows only saw an 8mb card in RAW format and nothing I've done since has recovered the card. Card was dead.
Anyway I contacted the seller who posted me a nice shiny Kingson 16gb class 6 card right away.
New card arrived last night, appeared in the phone straight away as a 16gb card. Great start.
Plugged the phone in, started copying some music on it - the write speed was incredibly slow. I mean really slow, 100mb of mp3s was taking the best part of 3 minutes. Popped the card in the PC, same problem.
I find that I can actually write data to the card till its full (albeit slowly) but once you've written more than around 4gb of data, the files start to vanish.
I know it sounds incredibly stupid but anything written after around the 4gb mark just doesn't appear when I plug it into the phone or the PC. The card claims it is full, but only 4gb of data is visible, let alone accessible. I've done the usual formatting of the card and changing card readers etc etc but the result is the same and this is starting to grow boring.
So, question. Am I just incredibly unlucky in my purchases or is my SGS killing cards? Because I'm quite weary of buying yet another card now.
Funny enough my old 4gb card still works just fine like it has for years.
I know you'll have a FAT (file allocation table) that usually reserves a predetermined amount of space on the card for file locations. But your memory card should not be able to accept more than whats available and should be displayed correctly no matter what your using. IE pc or phone. Kingston are fairly reputable, but is your dealer reputable. There are a lot of counterfeits out there. I don't believe the phone itself is damaging these cards. Since your stating your old trusty card still works like a champ
