Codec support in kernel - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone know where to start regarding adding new codec support in the android kernel? I'm particularly interested in iLBC for use in a VoIP softphone.

OpenCORE is where you want to look. There are a bunch of pdfs in the source tree with documentation.

This is great hopefully we can get divx/xvid support as well.

+1 for this thread.
Theres this .pls file that im obsessed with right now that would be amazing to listen to on my phone

.pls support would be application specific behavior and would not be handled at the kernel level. I believe MortPlayer has limited playlist support at the moment.

Good video playback on your Kaiser (Using Divx)

Please try this if you are suffering problems with video playback on your Kaiser (NOT VIDEO GAMES).
Go to the OFFICIAL DivX website and download the latest full package. Try out the DivX converter using the setting 'Mobile' (you can try it for a period then if you like it you can then purchase it).
This device has its faults but if you are not prepared to work around this you should not post on this developers site!
I can play any movie file over WiFi from my WLHDD2.5 in perfect rendition (for a PDA) after doing this with the basic TCPMP set to GDI playback.
JUST GIVE IT A TRY, you have nothing to lose!!!
EDIT..Use the .81 version of TCPMP if you can get it, buffer processing is faster.

Again, we all know we can view videos at a good speed after having converted them. But our Kaiser should read them with no conversion at all.

One would like to ask where it is said that Windows Mobile plays un-converted files??? It is primarily designed to sync via Windows media player.(as is the iSpudge with its PC software)..All other video playback is user selected and not fully supported. No lawsuit here I'm afraid...

No, I am stuck here with TCPMP until I get back to UK to purchase the new Coreplayer as my cred card wont work from the UAE online.
I am just trying to pass on any workarounds I find to others. I expect a massive factor of improvement when I get it but anything before that will also help others.

Yep, it does!! But has patience been lost? We are developers... Not miracle workers.. Even iTunes takes full control of the other type of unit (COMPLETELY!) to convert...I think the fact we still have a factor of control on our devices to CHOOSE is befuddling people... If it was all fully auto then XDA would no longer exist!!!

Video??? I can't even get WMP to sync more than 30 songs before dropping the connection. It took me 5 nights of sitting there reconnecting every 90 minutes or so just to get 4GB of music synced up. I have to say, this is one job the iPhone handles WAY, WAY, WAY better. The whole MS thing is just sad and disappointing.
It's funny that everyone talks about how it is nice to be able to install 3rd party apps to make your device better. Yes, you can not yet install 3rd party apps on the iPhone, but the biggest point is, in many case you don't need to. The browser works great, chat works great, music playback works great, video playback works great, google maps work great, email works great, etc....
My suggestion for video on the Kaiser is, don't waste your time with it. I have wasted 10s of hours trying and it is just not worth it. I have tried 6 different encoders including DivX, Pocket Divx, Handbrake, 4 different file types and countless bitrates, framerates and codecs.
tbh,i would really wanted an iphone but there are some major flaw that why i din buy it although its my dream phone
1st, its not available in my place officially(only can get cracked version), no 3g, no mms,can edit word, excel and blah blah
and although i dont knw will i face the same problem when i am syncing songs, as i haven try yet
but no, you dont need to waste 10hours to get ur kaiser to play video
just downlaod tctm, install it in kaiser
download divx, convert it as the 1st post says so, then upload to ur device...done
less then 30minutes all done

I use a product called "Wondershare DVD Ripper Suite" (has a ripper and a converter) and it has a nice batch feature as well. I have also had success with "SPB DVD" and "DVD to PocketPC" by a company called Makayama. "Ashampoo Shrink and Burn 3" does fine for me as well. Also, I have noticed that Windows Media Player performs some type of conversion/compression when syncing. For example, "Star Wars 3" is a 855 MB WMV file, but when I synced it to my device it was only 359 MB. However, when I transferred the original 855 MB file to my storage card using a card reader it was still 855 MB - what is Windows Media Player doing besides syncing?

It is probably doing its best to convert a video file (of which there are MANY formats) to the preferred WM AVI PDA format. If you do not have the corresponding CODEC in your PC WM player it will not even try..Everyone has to try to standardise their media format for the player designate. If you expect the file you have on your PC/Laptop to play the same on your portable device 100% without conversion then I am afraid you are living in cloud cuckoo land! The processor speed and video codecs are radically different for WM devices against full Windows machines. (irrespective of any driver omission before anyone starts!!)
Aspect Ratio is not only for screen playback... it is for what you expect from your device....

1.19 firmware with improved multimedia performance?

A couple of weeks ago, I returned my Touch HD to get an iPhone instead, but not before I sent a complaint to HTC's customer support about my disappointment in the device's performance. Today I received the following response:
Dear Mr. XXX I would just like to inform you that a new rom update will be available in the future for the Touch HD (1.19). On the new ROM, multimedia features have drastically been improved. Videoclips and films runs smoothly without any lag. I have gotten this feedback from devices that are using the new rom. We are yet to release when the ROM will be available for download. Kind Regards XXX HTC Europe

I'm sorry if this has been brought up before, but I did a search for 1.19 and got no results, so I figured it was worth posting. Is this news at all? Anyway, I'm sending a response asking what formats "Videoclips and films" refer to.
Edit: Here's my reply
This is interesting news. But "videoclips and films" could mean a lot of things -- what containers and formats have had their playback improved or, as you say, run smoothly in the new firmware? Does the media player that ship with the device now support playback of the common divx and xvid formats? Or has support for third-party multimedia software like for example CorePlayer improved? What of the performance of the many 3d accelerated games I've found barely playable on the device?
Thank you kindly for your continued interest in my case.

Edit 2: His reply
Thank you for your reply. I did play a film in fullscreen myself without lag, however this was indeed on a third party player (that you also have mentioned about). Right now, I don't have any further information to give you regarding file formats, codecs etc. I would however recommend you to search online for something like: "Video Playback SDcard Tune up". I'm sure you will find a useful article about video formats etc. HTC does not support or endorse third party software or links, therefore HTC will not supply with recommendations of useful third party solutions. I will get back to you if I get more information regarding 3D acceleration and future updated. Kind Regards XXX HTC Europe

good news, but I'm a bit suspecious
I think there comes new ROM because Qualcomm bought that AMD section which owned rights for that 3D graphic chip which Qualcomm didnt have rights to use before now.
So I think they ATLAST make proper 3D driver and HW acceleration.

My Touch HD bought in HK already shipped with 1.19 ROM (CSL) but i didn't found there is any special comparing with my old XPERIA X1.
Yeah this Hongkong-English Rom is already a month published and maybe there will spread a newer version. I would be happy, if there improve some things, like Video Playing, atm i have so 20 fps in average in a divx film, which is still already ok, but for the human eye 25fps would be better!

Androrb- ORB for android- please check this out!

hey have any of you guys seen this? http://www.cyrket.com/asset/943468869273605197 its orb for android, only problem is there is no search function for it!
do any of you mods or gods (cyanogen, etc) or normal folk (lol) know how to or could you add a search function or sort in artists, albums??
its open source now, so you could even make a quick buck!
http://christian-albert-mueller.com/blog/androrb-now-open-source/
I love this on the iphone, so it would be really great for android!
80 views and nothing?
I've been using that alpha for awhile now. Very buggy, video playback is sorely lacking codec support, music playback is marginal at best. Lack of search function and cumbersome file browsing make this app fail imo. Needs help badly but could be a cool package with some work.
Wow, almost made a new post because this one is dead.
I mean c'mon it's Orb for Android! I'm pretty geeked at how some of the videos I sampled from PC actually streams on here! C'mon surely there is someone that's interested in picking up the open source code and adding in better browsing options like browsing by folder & search! This have potential to be one of the most kickass apps on here!
i had orb streaming live tv and my media from my pc but it broke after cupcake for some reason i would love an app for this
Bump... This app needs some work!
Not working on Droid
I gave up Windows Mobile (which worked pretty well with Orb) and got a Droid yesterday. It is a fantastic device, but I have been pretty disappointed with the lack of Orb support. I would be willing to pay to see a stable Orb app, and a Hulu app too! (it would be nice if Orb started to stream Hulu to mobile devices, I know they already do some internet vids).
What's wrong with just using the mobile browser site? I've been using it almost since I got my G1 and it generally works fine.
I saw that this is now open-sourced but not a single dev has picked this up to finish. I see that it has great potential and a lot of the base has been completed, just needs some fine tuning.

[Q] Can VLC be ported to SGS?

Hi Guys & gals.
Since VLC player has already been ported to iPhone 4, & the sources available for anyone to comile it for any other platform of his/her choice, what's stopping someone from porting it?
Advantages:
- dont bother about conversion, can play all.
- many others that are not apperent to me as of now .
The source code page - http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-sources.html
I know this thread doesn't belong in this forum, will be tossed to the appropriate one at appropriate time by appropriate people & I welcome it.
i still prefer mVideoPlayer
yeah, advantage "dont bother about conversion" is kinds pontless - we already can play everything.
would be cool if we could watch divx-streams

same thing applies: we have something like mvideoplayer on SGS, why not on iPhone?
VLC uses software decoding/rendering to display movies. This sucks. Bad.
mVideoPlayer uses the on device codecs, which use the on device GPU to decode/render movies. This is way, way better.
So yeah, VLC can be ported, but I doubt anybody will put in the kind of insane work required when mVideoPlayer is available - with mVideoPlayer on an SGS being the best (by far) video solution for any mobile device available.

To be honest vlc suks big time even on windows. You can download many-many players that look better, work faster, have more options, play same amount of file types and do it faster.
Window media player classic is a good one. Search for CCCP on Google. I only use VLC for region locked DVDs.

mVideoPlayer does NOT play all formats, like .rm (Real Media Codec) which VLC does.

The definitive AVI thread (with sample file)

There seems to be a lot of confusion about this and I realize this is really a Chrome issue but perhaps we can work it out. No one I know in person can get an AVI file to play in chrome and hence cast to Chromecast.
Here is a 20mb sample file.
Can you download it or stream it in Chrome ? If you can tell us your setup.
Personally I have DIVX and VLC installed and it won't play. It just downloads.
Try it and let us know
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1330792/Sample Video.avi
It just dls from dropbox, haven't tried messing with it locally because dropbox is really slow right now lol.
What happens if you rename it to .mp4 or open it in chrome with ctrl+o?
Whatever you do it just downloads.
you can always use plex
I don't really know what that means but I've read performance is not good.
OK so i just uploaded an avi file to my google drive and played it in google viewer, casted in with the chrome extension and it streams flawlessly to my chromecast!
Well that's interesting. Worked for me also but not a very practical solution but it probably tells us something important.

You can try not contradicting yourself in your post... just because you heard performance was bad doesn't mean it will perform bad for you.
What do you lose by trying?
Why do you feel it necessary to pick at a post rather than contribute?
For the comprehension challenged, I know what Plex is, I just don't know how to set it up our if it's worth it.

I am contributing, I'm using plex and it's working swimmingly, that's my contribution.
It seems like you're the one picking at MY post.
If you wish to wait for another solution be my guest but the only other solution will be waiting for some media player (like VLC) to integrate a casting option...
So you know about Plex, you've been given it's website, so how about reading the how-to?! (Or are you going to have a snotty answer about that, too?)
As to slow, that depends entirely on what you're running it on. As it can run fine on a Raspberry PI it obviously doesn't require huge resources. It's run very well in the background of my five year old Mac without issue.
But I'm sure this answer won't be to your satisfaction either. Or maybe you'll learn please & thank you, never too late...

I will check out Plex, I promise. But my actual question is how to play AVI files directly in Chrome directly since I can't have Plex in every scenario. I'm confused why some people say it works and many others don't.

plex is very versatile, i can't imagine a scenario where it wouldn't be viable.
i only push this because as far as i can tell it's impossible to just add support for **** inside of chrome without patching in support in the chromium source...

It's really odd that it will play from Drive and some people claim it works.
As for Plex. 3 main problem cases come to mind
1} I cannot install it on my work computer that I travel with
2} Someone wants to show a video from their laptop. I can't tell them to install Plex
3} I tried to install on my laptop at home and it's not working. It will not play videos
There's a lot of reasons Native chrome would be better.
I should also note WMV doesn't work either. Plays in the browser but black on the Chromecast.

There's a lot of reasons Native chrome would be better.
I should also note WMV doesn't work either. Plays in the browser but black on the Chromecast.

I haven't actually tried but it seems like Drive has its own media player, that would explain why it works with drive...
As for your first two problems you have completely valid points but I'm sure your third issue is resolvable with more information.
I don't suggest plex as a permanent solution but as a temporary workaround.
I expect the issue is that AVI is a *container*: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio_Video_Interleave
Content inside can be encoded using numerous formats, some of which are likely supported directly by the Chromecast device (if it has the proper codecs), in other cases there may be external transcoding for the Chromecast happening (possibly GDrive is doing some behind-the-scenes optimization like it does for PDFs uploaded as books.)
In any case we're in early days yet, doubtless there are dedicated Chromecast streamers & optimizers in progress on many a dev's plate.
I agree on the container but I am using very common one's DIVX for example and testing with various one's. It's possible some obscure one's will work but that seems counter intuitive.
I do agree that this will be made to work at some point soon but this actually appears to be a Chrome problem not a Chromecast problem.
Possibly, or a Chrome + specific DIVX implementation issue.
The truth is DIVX is a commercial, patent-encumbered, codec. There are several slightly different implementations of varying legitimacy. It is entirely possible that some variants, or even specific implementations (this DLL vs. that DLL) are more & less Chrome compatible.
Also, for those that might be unaware, I'll note that both AVI & DIVX have been widely superseded by other, more efficient & versatile encodings. There is a great deal of legacy material out there, but more modern files are typically MP4 or Matroska using H.264 compression.
