(mods: please move to themes/dev if you see fit)
Many of you may have noticed that many of the stock widgets are over-sized.
Anyone know how we can mod them such that they occupy fewer desktop blocks? (images can be easily resized, asking about the overall canvas size)
Examples:
1) Google Search. Its just a shortcut to the main activities. The text box is not real. It should be a 1x1 widget but instead is 1x4.
2) Google Buzz. same as #1, should be 1x1.
3) Youtube. same as #1, should be 1x1.
Update: 4/15
The widget dimensions can be easily patched. Images auto-stretch.
Heres my new google search widget 1x1.

Why not delete it and use the search button?
2) Analog Clock. 4x3 !

No need for a clock when there's one in the notification bar. Unless it's a big one that is.
3) Google Buzz. same as #1, should be 1x1.

Use a launcher like I do, it's 1x1.

Same as above. Really, why do you need widgets for those?

The widgets offer more functionality at a single tap than shortcuts.
For example the Buzz widget offers:
1) buzz text
2) use the camera to take a photo to buzz
3) choose a picture to buzz
4) open the web-buzz interface
How do you propose you get 4 functions out of a 1x1 widget? That's the same as creating a shortcut to the application.

Then I don't know how you'd expect to cram all four functions into a 1x1 widget. I certainly wouldn't be able to hit the right spot with my finger.
The clock widget visually takes up only 2x2 (4) spots, yet is set to 4x3 (12).

I don't think I'm following you. I just added the clock widget and it does take 2x2. How is it set to 4x3?

Havent you seen the more-icons-widget ? Works fine.
Retracted the clock example, I was using a modded one that used up more space, (so it is possible through a mod!)
Just looked it up,
eek looks like a mess.

Yes, it looks quite hideous. Couldn't dare use something that makes my homescreen looks like a cluttered mess.
I am sure it exists for other widgets as well, but for the analog clock, check out http://github.com/cyanogen/android_packages_apps_DeskClock/blob/eclair/res/xml/analog_appwidget.xml. It has to do with the dpi. Change the dpi to reflect a larger/smaller space.
Because the Home screen's layout orientation (and thus, the cell sizes) can change, as a rule of thumb, you should assume the worst-case cell size of 74 pixels for the height and width of a cell. However, you must subtract 2 from the final dimension to account for any integer rounding errors that occur in the pixel count. To find your minimum width and height in density-independent pixels (dp), use this formula:
(number of cells * 74) - 2
Following this formula, you should use 72 dp for a height of one cell, 294 dp and for a width of four cells.

Taken from
http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/appwidgets/index.html
Is how you determine the dpi of the widget.
Hope this helps you out some.
Added an update to the OP. Its certainly possible.

I've already found how to change the order of tabs (and which tabs), by changing a registry key.
Does anyone know/remember how i can change the music tab from linking to WMP instead of the (horrible) audiomanager ?
Tips very much appreciated...
Tell more about that registry keys...
Maybe you can try this :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=319308
And let us know if it is working fine
Thanks my friend, it's fine...
Thanks....this works great !
Got amazing results for myself, very happy. Thanks for the work.
Here is what I got:
Removed the 5th tab, didn't use it
Changed the clock to something much more modern
Weather now works ok for me. had a problem before, probably because of the Hebrew Add On.
Icons by Schaps
Nice ...
However, is it possible to reduce the height of the clock?
Because in my opinion, it is TOO BIG ! ... I prefer to add more space for the appointments, tasks, etc ...
Also, is it possible to DUPLICATE the program shortcut tab ?

I agree with the first request. I also do not think the clock should be so big. Don't know if there is an answer, I think it is part of the design.

Third! on the size of the clock
When you only have a couple of inches of screen real estate its ridiculous to have a clock you can read from 3 miles!
yeah, the clock is WAY too big.
eric b
I was thinking the same about the clock. I think they overdid it, especially while in landscape mode. Blocks the whole screen
I'd love to get rid of the clock. I like LVM better. Also is there a way to unpin the plugin?

Look at post #3 at the top of this thread
That HTC customizer app is pretty handy. It allowed me to unpin the plugin so now the clock size isnt really a isue. Thanks.
I am wondering if it is possible for the text below icons on the homescreen can be removed? I dont think they are necessary and some of the longer names get cut off which annoys my OCD.

Lol..........
I would love a mod for this as well. Like you, I also hate seeing "Android App..." on my screen as well. My OCD also goes a step further; It kills me that "Handcent Sms" isn't properly labeled, "Handcent SMS".

I use Anycut to create shortcuts to existing applications with my own name. So Mail instead of Google M...
I'm not sure if you can have no text though

Cheers for that. You are correct in the fact it doesnt allow clear text fields though.
can you just put a space in the text field?

Well there is still a little grey circle underneath but not too noticeable (for now)

If you add Handcent by going adding widget then choosing "android widget" It adds the icon with text underneath as "Handcent Sms"
Is this possible? I find it redundant to use beautiful widgets with a clock already on the screen...
Thanks.

I'm sure it would be by modding the framework file. You should maybe start there and see where that goes.
You can do it by modding the framework file, or take the easy way like I did and use launcherpro and have it set to hide the notification bar.

Thought of that, but then I cant see my notifications at the top which I use a lot.. id just like to remove the clock, and slide all the battery and signal info to the right to take up its space.
I found work-arounds for that problem too lol. I customized my dock with 'call', 'texts', and 'gmail' icons and set the preference to show the 'unread' or 'missed call' count on the icon. I think it just makes my home screen look cleaner. Plus I get the full screen view of Katy Perry's half naked body woot woot.
Or you can also just set the notification bar to be hidden, and set the home softkey to pull down the notification bar.
Okay, I have successfully made Rosie do 5x5 and 4x5.
5x5 is what I wanted, but then every single widget would have to be edited to look right. - No.
4x5 lets the 4 column widgets work, and adds an extra row of icons to every screen. Only problem is, since each square of screen space is reduced to add the extra row, the last few lines of a widget are lost.
See attached 4x5 shot.
I know if I can remove some padding around the workspace screen, each cell would grow a little. I just can't find where to do it, and my fingers are getting numb from building and pushing the apk.
Does anybody know what padding settings I need to reduce to allow icon/widget cells to grow?
D
I done the same thing with the incredible when I had it.
There is a way to accomplish this but you are still going to have to edit the individual widgets to fit in the smaller space.
It's been a while but it's a pretty simple edit.
The main widgets that need to be changed are the clock, the calendar, and the people widget.
Sent from my B.A.M.F. Thunderbolt
Yeah, I've been down that road. I'm trying to avoid it though.
If I can recover enough space by removing the padding I shouldn't have to.
Just something I'll have to play with till I get it right I guess.
Thanks though!

This made me realize my mind has trouble interpreting grids phrased as [column]x[row]. I'm hard wired for row first, lol.
Does this look OK in landscape with 5 rows. This is where the problems usually begin for me wanting to use 5 rows.
If it's possible to cut that padding down to a bare minimum, it should fix the widget issue, at least a little bit.

You can't have scrolling wallpaper on Sense 3+ because the homescreens wrap around. Otherwise you'd have a jump from one edge of the image to the other as you scroll between your leftmost and rightmost homescreens and it would look terrible.
As for using the full image, that works fine here on Runny 3.1. The homescreen background is 400x800 480x800, so as long as your image is the same aspect ratio you can drag the crop indicator to fit the full image when you select it. Obviously if you're trying to use an image that's not in 1:2 3:5 ratio you'll only be able to use a portion of it.

Actually jumping from one end of the wallpaper to the other isn't that terrible. Back in the days before Sense 3.0 when we had scrollable wallpapers and if you used third party launchers (that allowed continuous scrolling of the homescreens) it was possible and not at all that unpleasant.

I use photoshop, but GIMP is an amazing free alternative (that's if you're after a full image editing program: there's plenty of other options if all you want is to resize images and nothing else).

My DHD too, so I switched to golaucher ex to enable scroll wallpaper.
