Should there be any difference between the speed of the browser/tethering on WinMo vs Myn's Donut? I feel like it's slower, but maybe it's just me... It's really aggravating...

I agree with CP0020.
Opera Mobile is very fast.

Yea, I'm mainly talking about downloads from the App Store and tethering... Just doesn't seem to be as fast as it used to be... I'll know more later today when I'm in my normal tethering spot (I never tether from home).
None of my tower type settings should have changed correct? I did do a *228 after I installed Android, maybe that f'd it up...

I just tried a download in my regular tether spot...
175 Kilobytes/s for 22 megs (Android SDK). That's not bad, 1400 kilobits/s or 1.36 megabits/s. I'm not sure what max EVDO Rev A speed is on Verizon... That's what coverage WinMo shows where I'm at...

Speedtest.net results (tethered)...

Why isn't the G1 smooth?

Well, today in chemistry my friend took out his iphone and I started using it. The scrolling on that phone is amazing. Everything was incredibly smooth like the home screen, browser, and music lists.
I'm curious as to why the G1 is very jerky when scrolling stuff. Is it because the G1 doesn't have a GPU or something like that? If it is possible for the hardware, will there be an update that makes it smooth?

It also depends on the rom but since you asked here are G1 specs & Iphone
My G1 is super smooth and rooted w/ king's espresso
Iphone:
OS=iPhone OS (based on Mac OS)
CPU/Gpu=ARM Cortex A8 600 MHz, PowerVR SGX graphics
Ram=256MB Ram
Legacy:
OS=Andro of course
Ram=192MB (Andro takes up 150~ i think)
CPU=MSM 7201A @528 MAX but unrooted are @384/
GPU=HW accelerated w/ 3D Oh and uses the 2nd core of the CPU
But you gotta remem that iphones cant Multi-task and has only 1 app open at a time, i have a Ipod touch and its fast, i used the 3GS and thats fast too. But i can never leave android b/c of what it can do.You might also want to know that a better gpu doesnt translate to faster scrolling either.
I have the newest cyanogen mod, and I'm not saying the iPhone is faster than the G1, I'm saying that it is smoother.
For example(not real numbers):
The g1's ui runs at 15 fps and the iphone's runs at 45 fps.

You should try Super D its faster than cyan's rom, but its based off of cyan&dwang. You could always try enom's rom too, he has a bunch of extras that can be accessed from terminal.
k ill try some later
For Sure try Super D rom. its by far the fastest and smoothest rom in my opinion.

I flashed the beta last night and that thing is smooth. Then again coming from a hero rom, stock is smooth

Quake 2 Android

They've ported Quake 2 and Quake 3 to Android, and they work great on the Droid apparently.
http://androidandme.com/2010/02/news/android-bounty-fully-working-quake-2-and-3-ported-to-droid/
I tried Quake2Android on my Touch, and it runs! But I only got 6 f.p.s. even with the graphical settings lowered (myn's build). Kinda cool, but really needs to run at 15 f.p.s. at least. You can get the apk for free from here:
http://sites.google.com/site/quake2android/
I downloaded the 40 mb map file over 3g in about 10 minutes, but you can get it from the web too.
Well I was wondering if there would be a way for one of you genius hackers to take a look at this app and see if you can't make some optimizations to make this run better on our system. Although on the quake2android page, it shows HTC Tatoo with 5 f.p.s. so I'm not expecting this to get any better until the guy releases a new version.

To get it go faster go to video settings set it to 320x240, yes to 8 bit textures and lower texture quality, also change the screen size slightly, i can get depending on what i am looking at 15-20 fps without sound.
Tried to get quake 3 to work http://code.google.com/p/kwaak3/ didnt have much luck yet, it cant allocate the files I get Hunk data failed to allocate 64 megs
I didn't think hw3d was supported on Donut (myn's rom).
If you try msmission's ROM, you'll probably get better performance due to hardware OpenGL support.
hw3d is up on Myn's build so I don't think there would be much of a difference.

Yeah its in the kernel I think. Armadillo Roll and some other 3d games work great.
60 FPS!
Just downloaded both apps, and they both run at 60 FPS, i am using samsung galaxy S I9000 with the Android 4.1 jelly bean ROM

Web browsing?

Just wondering how is the web browsing when it's rooted? Is it pretty fast on wi-fi? Also has anyone ran skyfire on it for flash? I'm probably getting one tomorrow and was wondering because I do alot of web browsing. Thanks guys!
it seems to load pages slower than my evo 4g. i've done a few test and it's anywhere from 10-30 seconds slower. dunno what the slowdown would be since when i compaired my droid to the evo they were nearly equal in loading pages.
i used engadget as the test page and xscope and dolphin on both as the browsers.
I SetCPU to Performance (600 min 800 max) and I am getting faster web load times than EVO 4g.

still no difference with mine. 16 sec slower on latest test. 600/800 on demand.
800/800 the evo just beat it by 3 seconds.
still, not bad for a $250 tablet.
Does it make a difference if you use an alternate browser?
i've used both xscope and dolphin, both current versions. dolphin seems to load faster. i'm not 100% on that as i only counted seconds after loading finished on the faster unit.
So web browsing isn't a highlight on it then. I'm not sure how fast the EVO loads but it is a phone. Have you guys tried Opera in turbo mode? Might help ya out.
Also, has anyone tried Skyfire for flash or anything?
Rooted, running the Dolphin browser and page loads are good on wifi, roughly the same as my rooted phone on wifi.
I've tried all the major web browsers on my NC and Opera Mobile is by far the best experience. Dolphin HD is mediocre on load speed and downright sluggish and moving around the page and zooming. Opera Mobile is a full web browser (not to be confused with Opera Mini) and it has very smooth panning and zooming. It feels hardware accelerated even though it's not. You can also enable Opera Turbo in the settings which just made it that much faster.

i've never liked opera and honestly i don't know why, lol. guess it wouldn't hurt to give it a shot.

Best app for connection test.

What is the best app(preferred free) that test how fast your
Wifi/3g connection is?

Not to hijack the thread, but what is everyone's average up/down speeds on Edge and 3G?

On 3g, average of 4mbps download and 2.5mbps upload. Never test edge because I never feel the need to switch bands.
On wifi, I go between 18 and 23mbps down and 15 to 18mbps up.
I'll throw another one in here. FCC test from the market. It's the one I use.
A word of caution
Reg: Data Usage
App: Speed Test
Avg data usage per test: ~6MB
Audience: For people with "limited" data on.
I was puzzled to see I had close to 150 MB data consumed last noon. I was sure I wasn't downloading anything at that and all I was doing was trying out modems. Today morning I realized I was using the SpeedTest app to test the modem at that time. So I made a couple of tests using the app, using the 3G watchdog app to keep tab on data. It kinda shocked me to notice that this app was using ~6MB per test! That explains my data usage y'day. I had done more than 20 tests, to say the least, in less than an hour y'day. And then many more tests during the day and even late into night.
So now u r all warned if u r on limited plan. As for me, I am on the 2GB plan, and well, these speed tests cost me close to 300MB in just one day, y'day.

Hey how did you get up to 18 mbps? The scale only goes up to 10... and I only get about 2mbps.....

The scale changes with respect to the speed. Mine went up to 15+mbps at school.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Can anyone tell me why mine is really slow? Wifi and 3g both are really bad compared to what y'all have..
Sent from my phone
It's case by case. The speed is related to your phone +ROM+ modem + environment. That's one of the reasons why there are so many (ROM, modem, kernel) combinations out there. We all look forward to the release of AT&T's Froyo source such that developers can come up with an universal solution for all.

Using the speedtest.net app, the max speed that can be reached (stable) is around 10mbps, but it flickers up to around 13mbps (unstable). And using the FCC app, it runs the exact same test as speedtest, but it has a a higher max speed and it allows me to get an accurate result.
FCC test seems to provide more stable results on my Captivate.
Speedtest.net halts while testing the upload speed under several different ROM/modem/kernel combinations.
So I've been using Fcc test.. should you set the server to the nearest location? Is that the best?
Sent from my phone
Yea, gives you better results since you're transferring data from point A to point B and back, instead of going from point A to point J and back.

Stock browser Performance on CM7

Hi all,
I have noticed that the stock browser runs really slow in comparison to Opera Mobile, especially when browsing the XDA forum. Page loading speed, panning and scrolling is a lot slower. Do you guys find that? Currently I have CM7 on an SDCard. Do you notice any performance difference running it on internal memory?
Thanks.
This is because Opera mobile uses the GPU for zooming and scrolling. It has nothing to do with it being on your SD card or CM7.
I tried out a Xoom today at Best Buy. I was mainly curious about its performance with web browsing through the stock browser. It seemed to perform pretty similar to the Nook Color on CM7, if a little faster, but some sites like the XDA forums here were still noticeably slow.
I find the slow performance of Android's UI to be very annoying because my 3 year old EeePC 900 on XP with its ancient Celeron M and Intel GMA 900 perform far better. Only Opera Mobile comes close but Opera Mobile is a rather annoying browser to use because of how limited the config options are and bookmark management is terrible. (yes I know about the ridiculous secret config page with its indecipherable options )

Blame the lack of GPU utilization on UI elements. Here's a good breakdown of opera:config settings.
