difficulty in rooting mt3g over g1

When I rooted my g1 it took me about a full day to complete it and thats starting from not having a clue how to do it, downloading the files and going thru sever mistakes. I have it right where I want it now but I'm considering going to a mt3g. Is it more difficult to root a mt3g over the g1? Also which phone when rooted is better?

I personally like the G1 rooted over the MT3G. For some reason I would have the same roms on both devices and the G1 would always stomp the MT3G when it comes to performance.
The G1 is more grunt work to root (to root properly) as the MT3G now has the Relentless Rooter which will root the phone properly for you. The G1/MT3G had something like relentless rooter but it was the "one click root" and you couldn't install Cyan roms (didn't root properly).

The reason im considering the switch is because my g1 is beat to hell, dings, scratches etc.....does tmobie have any other phones comeing down the pipeline? I need a new one but root is a must!

There hasn't been any official word on what they're releasing. But I did find a lineup of HTC android models coming in 2010. I like everything I see here (especially the HTC Bravo ((please tmobile! please tmobile!))) but nothing with a physical keyboard (which I believe is becoming a thing of the past..boo)

I guess im looking for something more streamlined but i dont want to give up performance.

[Q] Debating on making the switch

I'm a current iPhone 3G owner and I'm due for an upgrade. I was at the AT&T store last week buying my girlfriend an iPhone4(ironic, right?) and saw the Captivate. I picked up the phone and fell in love, I love the screen, love the interface, loved everything about it. My immediate reaction was, I need to have this phone, this is going to be my upgrade. I start reading around websites and forums and all I've been reading is negative things about the Captivate.
My question is, is the Captivate an upgrade over the 3G and is there really that many issues with it? I'm growing tired of the same ole, bland ole iPhone and love the customazation available with the Cap.

Of cause it is an upgrade to your 2 year old iPhone 3G. This is the world of tech.
And yes, there is a lot of issues too. Because there is no perfect thing in this world.

I came from an iphone 3G, and it is definitely an upgrade from the iphone, yet a learning curve because the 2 OS' are completely different! But so worth the switch!!

I don't think I'll have any problems with anything tech wise, reading around seeing all the issues is what really has detered me from this phone. I think I'm going to make the switch..

You won't regret it. There are fixes for most things, the only issue I have thats still nagging is the GPS problem.

Well, yes, of course the Captivate is an upgrade over the iPhone 3G; the screen alone (nonetheless the rest of its specs) should make that obvious.
Lastly, the only problems I really know with the Captivate is some having GPS issues, and the phone experiencing lag. Otherwise, everything is pretty much an acquired taste due to the switch from iOS to Android. If the Captivate will be your first Android phone, then I can pretty much assure you that that part --switching OSes -- will be the hardest.

I came from a 3GS and felt like it was an upgrade in every possible way, except the Marketplace. It's not quite there yet, but catching up fast.
There are a lot of problems with the phone, but I will tell you this. You will probably have to go through a handset or two (maybe more in some cases) before you find one that works as you expect. Don't be shy about exchanging the handset till you strike gold and don't see anything outside of the GPS issue, which is an admitted software fix from Samsung.
Outside of that, you will be overwhelmed at first. Learning a new OS is always a bit daunting, but when it's an open source OS it's even more so. You have to get yourself into the mindset of how to do things, as opposed to if you can do them. Tons of customization and software choices. The phone really lets you flex your personalization muscles. If you don't like the browser, download a different one. If you don't like the music player, there are 10 more to take it's place.

Lagfix and longterm consequences

What are the lagfixes longterm consequences? I've herd some unsettling things about it...ranging from bricked phone to catching on fire and exploding,
Now I'm asking since I'm planing to get this or the desireHd and frankly sacred the crap outta me.And since theres like a 80% chance I'm gonna have the lag if I buy it I have to know what are the risks , is it like the regular danger of rooting or something much worse?

I no longer would recommend the i9000m to people just to many Force Close problems. The phone is unreliable because of the Force Close errors. I was locked out side waited for my phone to boot so I could check a friends buzzer code. I had to put my phone in recovery mode and do a factory reset and lose all my un-backed up personal data on the note pad. That was a big Epic Fail moment for my phone. As much as I hate apple and Itunes at least it works when i needed my Iphone.

Lol, it won't make it catch on fire. If anything it might brick your phone, which wouldn't be a severe brick, easy to recover from using Odin. I reckon the chances of anything going wrong are really low.

Must be something screwed up on your phone because I get no force close errors.
I don't believe there's any real harm using a lagfix. All it does is use a different filesystem, which is actually proven, fast, and reliable, unlike Samsung's own RFS system which seems to be pure crap.
I'm using z4mod. So far is seems reliable and performance is amazing
LOL at "catching on fire and exploding". Whoever you heard that from should lose all credibility if they were serious when saying that

Generally it shouldn't do any HW damage, i.e. NAND wear down, since RFS (as it was mentioned) is pure crap, based on FAT as rumor has it. I believe that each lagFix that uses variations of ext fs will in fact span NAND life.
As for catching fire, etc. This happens on other devices also and more faulty hardware rather than OS problem, so installing lag fix has in my opinion only advantages.
(Well and a hindrance since if you change firmwares often the you need to uninstall the lag fix).

Like I said I want to buy this (samoled FTW) but I'm concerned about all these problems.
If you go to the hero forum lots of people are reporting a craploads of problems which I never had (seriously haven't had an issue since I bought it )

Just read some spanish forum about how the phone currupts every 4 or so weeks is that true? Imean i dont wanna have to restore every month.

Maybe not polled as to say, but if you take in consideration that 5 millions+ units where sold, it's not that big of a number. Frankly, I think the "Plus" outwieght the "cons" largely.
Just don't get it "used" and be sure you can exchange / service it if needed, kinda sucks that you'd spend hundreds without any safe net! But that goes for about anything!

I don't like to buy used , in my experience there's always something the seller isn't telling and will comeback to bite you on the ass.
But about my previous question...is the vodoo fix harmful and is the thing about it corrupting data true?

that's what i thought. i'm guessing its a rooted OG or D2. since rooting those is cake.

Best bet it's a D1, cuz he talks about Cyanogen and the D2 only recently started getting nightlies.

If he was able to root a D3 and run Cyanogen (for which there is NO build for yet) then he would likely get paid a kings ransom for the knowledge alone. But since it has not been widly broadcasted its likely a D2.

I'm confident it was a slip of the keyboard. People get excited when they're on to something exclusive, but the guy sounds a bit bored.

Confessions of a flashoholic...

I've been on the Android side of things for almost three years and this is the most content I've ever been with a phone. Back in my iPhone days I had to jailbreak and add everything that the phone didn't have. Then on my Atrix 2, loved the hardware, hated motoblur. I had very short stint with the Galaxy Nexus, but the radios and terrible battery life were deal-breakers for me. Then I got the S3, rooted and rom straight out the box. I got addicted to flashing the latest and greatest (cause TW is the worst) constantly checking xda. Now the Nexus 5 and kit kat have totally made me realize I don't have to flash anymore. I've tried a few roms just to nandroid back to stock and I'm fine with that. Now I can enjoy my device and not borderline obsess over making sure it works, or some random bug pops up. I know I can't be the only one that feels like this...

Could not agree with you more. I was in the same boat, would wait patiently for the jailbreak and search cydia for apps that made my phone my own. Then I was always a few versions behind cause I didn't want to break my jailbreak. Then with the One I was super content with the GE rom I was running and I still keep an eye on it. But, I was always trying to make my phone like a Nexus, so why not just get that! I did and could dnot be happier with stock KitKat, well it is rooted and has a custom recovery just in case.

Exactly. Best phone experience to date. It's the small stuff, like the new dialer, the steady improvement of Google Now and the new launcher. I can finally enjoy my phone and not try to improve my it every few days...

100% agree. I was the same way, constantly flashing and dealing with bugs, left my Nexus stock and no looking back.

1st phone I've owned that is not rooted/tweaked/modded and no plans to. No need! Coming from Eris, Inc, Bionic, GNex, GS3, GS4, N4, MotoX < N5!

Same here. I recently went back to stock ROM on my N5 and really feel no need to change apart from the occasional kernel tinkering. With Gravity Box I feel everything a custom ROM has to offer is there. When I was on my prevoius Samsung devices, I would always install a custom AOSP rom straight away.

Kangakat with his xposed gravity box. Stock, battery life is great. Zero bugs and all the useful mods from aosp. I've been flashing since my g1 and this is the first time I have all I need.

I agree too. When I got my S3, I rooted it and installed CM even before the first boot up. But with the nexus 5, my first nexus phone, I have discovered that rooted stock with gravitybox xposed module is all I need.

I basically feel the same way, although i DID install a custom ROM. KangaKat.... so it's still 90% stock... just with some extra bonuses. Was on stock since i got mine (ordered launch day and got a few days later).... so about a month and a half. Just installed KangaKat a few days ago. Kinda debating if i want to keep it, though... or go back to my stock backup.... or if i want to try out another rom. Kinda tempted to try Omni...

This is only my 3rd android device but everytime I end up rooting and spending hours on end exploring stuff.. its fun, but wastes precious time. Haven't installed a rom this time at least and don't plan to.

Same here. Been about a month now on stock, with no urge to install latest cm nightly. Of course, gravity box provides the quick fix I need to get me through the day .

I'm right there with you. I'm totally happy with the stock rom on this phone. I'll probably flash something else at some point down the line, but right now I have no desire to change it up.

The evolution of Android has been a great one to watch. Having played with a G1, it was convoluted and a bit cumbersome. Now, the os is clean and concise, and most importantly it's open. Kudos to progression...

flashing is addictive then my beer addiction ,,,
previous phones: iphone4, nokia e 5,iphone3g, nokia n73,

I'm really happy with how much I love my Nexus 5. To me the speaker got a little bit better from 4.4 to 4.4.1 so I was able to hear my alarm in the morning better.
