Per the posting of rvpartsguy who installed an app on the market called APN BAckup using it too backup on Ivan's Rom then using that backup on the Aloysius or other SPrint roms seems to restore picture messaging in full. THanks again for figuring this out, others please try this and confirm here as it worked for me and two others so far.
App name is APN Backup on the market.
Actually suggested by pkopalek. I probably spelled his name wrong but just trying to give credit where credit is due.
Worked for me....

ya wasn't my idea....i think i was just the first to try it out ..... but thanks for the recognition
it was definitley pkopalek's idea ...... just glad it worked ....cuz it solves one major headache with a few different roms out there .... now if some one could create a flashable fix or build it it to roms .......
I am sure some one can now create a patch for this ....

That's what Im trying to figure out. I have no idea where to incorporate the APN in the rom
I followed instructions and tried and did not work. Would it matter that I have removed the mms.apk? Since I use handcent instead.

You don't experience any issues with texting after you deleted the mms.apk? I use chompsms and when I delete the mms.apk I can no longer receive texts. I can send just not receive.

nope. been doing this since we have had root and never had an issue. done it on every rom i have had as well. never used chomp, only handcent.

after rebooting and *228 op 2, it now works. tested to my wife's verizon bb. very very nice find guys.

Try this:
Load up a normal 2.1 ROM that MMS works for.
Download APN Backup & Restore.
Use it, Backup APN's.
Load up your Sprint ROM.
Download and open APN Backup & Restore.
'Delete APN's'
'Restore APN's', and choose the APNs that you backed up from the normal 2.1 ROM.
Your APN's may be very close, but this will make them E-X-A-C-T.

Didn't work for me. APN backed up, *228, reboot, nothing.
Are you backing up the Apn off a rom that mms is known to work? Then restoring with that apn?

Its not working for me either. I also noticed that if I delete the apns i still have data access. According to the app i shouldn't have data access after deleting the apns.

A friends phone I rooted had the issue of it not working after restoring APN's. I had him call Verizon to ask why he couldnt receive/send MMS and they looked at his account, did some mojo on their end and after bout 10mins, it started to work. Maybe this is the issue for you guys. I have got this working on 3 phones so far, so I know it works. And are you doing the *228 op 2 after restoring APN's?
It worked for me running Aloysius V5. I backed up the apns from ivans latest rom
Im a cricket user and i use APN Backup/Restore to get the cricket settings in.
APN has nothing to do with internet on our phones, or not in the way you would be thinking, for access/authentication etc (its all handled in the NV via cdma workshop or qpst or whatever your flavor is).
Which is why deleting the APN's and rebooting still gives internet, the APN afaik (and i dont know much lol) is only for getting MMS up and running
the APN information that APN Backup and Restore is getting is from the /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/telephony.db file
you can pulll it from there, make your modifications with a decent text editor and save it, then push it back, or modify that in the rom distribution if your trying to make it sprint specific for the eris.
hope that helps
again i could be completely incorrect, im just basing this off the knowledge i have gained from here and from howard forums for getting my eris 100% working on cricket

So I really would like to tether my G1 phone. I need the tethering done by either wifi or bluetooth (not USB).
Are there any options to do this without rooting?
If not, I guess I'll consider rooting...I just didn't want to have lose all my personal data (messages, bookmarks, etc.). I think that my contacts would be the only thing saved because they are kept on gmail account...so they'd synch on the newly rooted phone?
Thanks in advance for any help!!

PDA net is the only tehter software that doesn't require root (unless I missed something) but that's USB only. So yes, you'll have to root for tethering over WiFi or bluetooth.
The one click method doesn't require you to wipe, although it is recommended, so if you flash a Cyanogen or JF build all your data should remain in tact.
So, my suggestion is use the one click method to flash Cyanogen's recovery image and from there install Cyanogen's 4.04 ROM without wiping (it's very stable). In theory that should keep all your data. If the phone boot loops after you've flashed Cyanogen's ROM, then just wipe and reflash. That means you would loose your data, but you would have root for tethering.

Rooting is very easy and quick now i believe theres a link in my signiture to my own guide which is very specific but just stop before you partion your sd card
Thanks for the info so far. Maybe I'll just root my phone then. So before I root, what are all the disadvantages??? Here are the ones I've seen so far...
1. Could lose all your personal data (although this should be minimized if you backup most of your stuff first using a backup app from the marketplace first)??
2. T-Mobile MyFaves app doesn't work.
3. The built in Instant Messaging app doesn't work for MSN, AIM, etc. (Is there an IM app out there that works as well as the default one? So it keeps you signed in all the time?...I need a good IM app that works all the time and keeps you signed in...)
Anything else??
1. Use my backup pro(not free, idk any free ones, sorry) from market to backup/restore all apps/bookmarks/sms/call log/etc
2. MyFaves app works now.
3. I have no idea, since I use Meebo instead.
Just remember that you can't backup stuff like texts and bookmarks before rooting, as backup apps require root
Ah...interesting.
So when you root...there isn't really anyway to go back to just how you were before trying to root?? I'm guessing you need root first in order to use a full backup utility like nandroid backup or something?
All in all...I need to root, just trying to figure out for sure what I'm getting into before the jump.

Does it work pretty well for you? Does it keep you signed in all the time? Even when your phone goes idle? Do you like it as good as the default Android IM app?
You can use most backup programs without rooting.

I don't use the default IM app because I don't have unlimited texting. I like meebo, though sometimes it signs out, it has an auto sign-in option. It works for me. YMMV
It looks like MyBackup from the Market doesn't require root and has a 30 day free trial
I noticed that on my Froyo enabled HD2 every time I install a new build the market automatically installs the apps there were downloaded previously. Is there a way for this to be enabled on Captivate ROMs? If this has been asked and answered somewhere else, please let me know. Thanks.

You can use Titanium Backup to achieve the exact same thing.
Mine has always done that, maybe because I restore my Android ID. I flash my phone at least 2 times a week.
EDIT: Mis-read OP, my apps are not automatically installed but the Market seems to keep a history of FREE as well as PAID apps I had previously installed.
It may have to do with the product id. I know my aria did what you describe and I think the stock rom did as well. The froyo leaks mess up the android id and the efs folder. It may be responsible for our lack of that feature

Only ROM for the Captivate that's every done this for me is the Cyanogen 6.1 Beta I tried out a while ago. Apps immediately just started downloading lol.
I thought touchwiz ripped that feature out.
I'd also like to request this. Titanium backup is different.
Having the right android id # only had about 1/4 of my free apps be saved so that didn't work for me

Also had the same happening to me on Gingerbread. Prefer TiBu as I can restore my app data as well.

Not exactly the same thing. I have to install TiBu (which is in the market) if I have not created the zip file to install via ClockWork or if it is not in the ROM already.
Have you seen what I am referring to? It is a much better process because it fully automated; add your google account and it begins pulling down your apps (including TiBu).

I have two different devices, Samsung Captivate and an HTC HD2. I use the same google account on both. I recently installed a newer, different ROM, put in my google account and it began to download the apps that I have loaded on my Captivate. If it is ID related, it does not seem to be a problem between devices.
How can I ensure that I am using the same ID on my Captivate between flashes?

I have noticed that when I use TiBu to restore between flashes I get FC on app. I think this may have something to do with the Market ID option checked in TiBu. I have not been able to find a doc to explain these settings, so I end up having to redownload all my apps. As long as I am restoring on the same ROM I am good. However, if I try to restore between flashes (sometimes even between build updates) TiBu fails. Not sure why this happens.
I'm flash happy but every time I do all my text history is gone. Where are those kept so I can save them between roms?

You will lose them unless you back them up. I use sms backup+ from the market. It links your messaging app with gmail so you can back up and restore.

If you use Titanium Backup, your texts are automatically backed up when you do a full system data + apps backup. You can restore them manually from the Backup/Restore tab of TiBu (it's one of the items in green, I forgot which one exactly). Just make sure you don't choose to restore all system data with TiBu or you might mess up your ROM and have to reflash. You'll have to reboot your phone after the restore for your texts to show up.

+1 SMS backup + is really easy and works flawless for me.
Don't use titanium backup to restore texts. Often it will cause force closes that require a reflash to fix depending on which roms you are moving between.
You could just change roms without using odin or clearing like I do, heh.

And this also isn't a best way to install a ROM. Yeah it works, but you also can run the risks of a bad install. I think we'll all agree, the last thing we need is more threads regarding constant force closing or soft-bricked phones.

I REALLY like SMS Backup+. I have automatic backups set, and since everything gets backed up to my Gmail account, that's one less thing I need to remember to copy off the phone before a ROM flash.

You shouldn't have to use odin but I agree. Definitely clear cash and data.
I don't think we should be recommending odin one click to everyone because it can harm the newest build of captivates. It's also very unnecessary.

I disagree. Bad ROM installs usually mean fc's, isolated problems and maybe stuck at boot screen. If that happens, simply wipe data+cache and try again. Flashing back to stock on the other hand--if something goes wrong, you're looking at a soft-brick (requiring a jig on some Captivates), worst-case-scenario, your bootloader is corrupt and you hope you know someone with a JTAG.

sounds like something really screwed with your buildprop, or any other identification of the phone that the market needs. since you already tried to change the fingerprint in buildprop to no solution, i'd suggest to start completely over with JME v4 (= the roto suggested pit file, roto-JMEv4 FULL and repartition enabled). that should factory reset the phone and hopefully eradicate any screwed files.
here Market works like a charm as ever; running JME-v4 with CF-Root

This same thing was happening on my wifes tab the following steps made it work
-unbreak IMEI by restoring /efs backup
-delete vending.apk from /system/app
-fully reload software (chose roto_v4)
-sign in to market and allow it to update
-Rebroke IMEI
unfortunatly it only worked for about 20 minutes then back to the same problem. Testing now leaving the IMEI unbroken to see if that resolves

Hi boricua,
I had this same Issue since yesterday... unafortunately I didn't had the time to work on this until today. Since I don't found no body working with this I started it on my own.
And that's what worked for me: I deleted once again the /efs/ content and get the original files back on place. Then turned on WiFi and turned off Network connections. Then turned off the GT and reboot it and get connected via WiFi and Signed on Google Account via WiFi.... then turned On Networks and deleted the /efs/ contents.
This was just thinking and playing with some logics under the IMEI identification. So this is what worked for me. I didn't get back to stock or reflashed any ROM.
I hope this help you guys. I was monitoring it all day and still working!!!!!

never did a rotobackup so i am SOL if anything happens to my tab, i dont even remember what FW my tab came with. i tried flashing the t-mobile stock FW that Roto set up but i kept getting a fail message when using ODIN but i am able to flash other FW, it seems that i have a bootloader, but at least my market is up and running again after re-flashing JME v4, dont know if that did it or the market was fixed. i will have to wait and see what happens.

are you hitting the repartition box when you flashing the stock firmware? flash without hitting the repartition box and see what happens.
if you don't do a roto back up then backup your efs folder at least
use this to check if you have a protected boot-loader. double click check and it willl do the rest for you.
first off, I've seen fixes for this (I think) but I don't understand what they are saying to do...and whether or not it is a fix for my problem. Been working on this for a couple of hours now and no mas.
So, I have the latest versions of aospCM7, gapps, and clockwork. ( at least I think I do, I dled them all tonight.)
I followed the instructions at the aospcm7 wiki from stock.
The rom runs seemingly fine until I go into the market and try to dl an app (specifically either titanium back up pro or rom manager). Then it will dl and say it has successfully installed then app and immediately force closes. The app does not show up in the drawer, and the force close message pops up randomly afterwards. I have tried a simple reboot, alltheway down to reflashing the rom w/ gapps twice now and trying to reflash gapps alone. As well as re dling the file and replacing the gapps file and reflashing it.
If anyone knows of a solution to this and can explain to me how to execute said solution it would be very appreciated. Btw, this is my first root/ rom so I'm still a super noob Be gentle? lol
EDIT: And now that I tried reflashing them together one more time I'm stuck in a bootloop....
EDIT2: Am now restored back to stock thanks to nandroid back up. thank god. Anyways, I'd still like to figure ou the issue and give it another go ,so if anyone can shed some light, please do.
You using Firerat?
The fixes never worked for me. A few downloads then I had to apply the fixes again and reboot.

I feel ya. What I had to do was recovery, fr recovery, install ROM, fr boot, load the ROM, use the terminal fix, recovery, gapps, fr boot, boot the ROM and skip the automatic search that Google tries to do.
Then virtually the same mess of events to nand restore after a prl update for mms. Too much bs...
Try deleting the market updater apk.
