different nexus one - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I am looking to buy a used nexus one... I have found some deals on line
BUT my only concern is: how can I differentiate between the two different versions of the phone? My carrier is FIDO and I have a data plan with them, so I want the phone that allows 3G speeds with FIDO.
I want to know how to differentiate between the two because many sellers online dont know the difference themselves since they dont have a data plan. I would rather avoid going through the trouble of meeting the person and testing my SIM in the phone. If there was anyway I could tell them to read something off the phone that tells the phone apart.?
As of March 16, 2010, there are two versions of the Nexus One. Both versions of the Nexus One cover most major GSM and 3G providers in the US, Europe and Asia. On both phones, the GSM radio frequencies covered are 850 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, and 1900 MHz. The original Nexus One also came along with UMTS frequency bands 1 (2100 MHz), 4 (1700 MHz), and 8 (900 MHz).[39], allowing it to access 3G throughout Europe, as well as on T-Mobile USA and WIND Mobile in Canada. The second version of the Nexus One supports UMTS frequency bands 1 (2100 MHz), 2 (1900 MHz), and 5 (850 MHz), allowing it to access 3G in most of Europe, as well as on AT&T Mobility in the USA and Rogers Wireless, Fido Solutions, Bell Mobility, and TELUS Mobility in Canada.
Thanks any help is appreciated.

For FIDO you' need At&t version of the phone.

No, you dont.
You want the one that is only 2G with robbers.
The reason for this is that you will ultimately want to drop the ripoff and go with better phone service. No sense limiting yourself.
3G with robbers won't help you with anything except causing data overages. This will cost you horribly. 2G is a nice way to reduce/prevent data overages, and with robbers' data rates, this is pretty much MANDATORY.

Hey stupid, did you happen to read the original post saying he has a data plan and wants to use 3G?
OP: Don't listen to lbcoder, you clearly stated you wanted to keep your 3G data so the AT&T one pointed out by Mr ILIA is the right phone.

Yeah, he's clearly angry with the cell phones thugs in Canada. And I don't blame him, but I currently can't get a cheaper deal with Wind than what Fido/Rogers gives me. (For my usage.)
Here's hoping Wind is really a great success though, then it won't take people 5 hours on the phone to get a good deal anymore.
But if you do want an unlimited everything plan, and live in the few cities that Wind is in, and don't plan to travel to other cities in Canada often. Then seriously consider them when your time is up.

A few easy questions.

So I am currently looking for a G1 to buy.
It will be bought from ebay, and basicaly my questions are.
They say unlocked and that the mobile will work for any GSM network, does this mean no 3G network? My simcard allows my current cellphone to go in 3G and I woundering if this would change with the new phone.
And are there any good tips for me? To look out for while I'm browsing the G1 auctions and stuff?
Thanks in advance, Bread. <3
Unless you end up buying some kind of crazy G1 knockoff or a broken phone, it will work on 3G. Most likely 1700AWS (US T-Mo) and 2100 (pretty much the rest of the world).
Ofcourse I will aim for the real G1 ^^
No point in buying a chinese fake now is there? ^^
So should I aim for an unlocked one or can I do it myself?
(even though I wouldn't have access to any other sim than my very own.)
I'm not sure but I think I've heard of issues getting 3G with AT&T

The G1 will not work on AT&T's 3G.
Be aware that AT&T and rogers in north america operate on 1900mhz and 850 for 3g as T-mobile uses 1700 and 2100. Not sure about overseas as they use 2100 too. You would have to ask someone else about that.

Awesome - HD7 on AT&T!

Picked up my HD7 from the local T-Mobile Store, acquired my unlock code, applied successfully and was up and running (Exchange and all) within 30 minutes on AT&T.

Course they said that. They want the money from the contract/upgrade. Call up corporate and let them know the store would not sell you a phone. There are no restrictions on phones being sold outright, but sometimes, because these stores are not corporate stores, they can enforce their own rules, but reporting them can sometimes make them change their mind.

how SLOW is edge? Is like like a very bad wifi connection? Hehehe... No really, I want to know.
No smartphone is worth the pain of Edge!
I don't know about at&t, but with t-mobile, edge is like not having an internet connection. About 100 kbps and alot of auto updates time out.
Does AT&T 3G require a special frequency that isn't covered by Quad Band? Or is it that T-Mobile 3G has a special, non Quad Band frequency?

there are two band sets for gsm phones, GPRS/EDGE and UMTS:3G/3G+/3.5G/HSDPA/HUDPA (sometimes these abbreviations are used individually to denote 3G service. This is not correct as they all mean a different type of 3G, the most generic term is UMTS).
Sometimes HTC phones have different band sets for different countries.
HTC HD7 Europe:
* HSPA/WCDMA: 900/2100 MHz
* GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
HTC HD7 T-mobile USA Version:
* UMTS 2100MHz AWS1700/2100MHz
* GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900MHz
For GSM there is no issue, 850 & 1900 are USA, 900 & 1900 are EU, but all the phones cover everything:
http://www.worldtimezone.com/gsm.html
In the USA, UMTS 3G for tmobile is on AWS 1700/2100 only
In the USA other providers use 850 with some using 1900
For example, the HTC Surround on AT&T uses:
* UMTS 2100/1900/850
* GSM GPRS EDGE 850/900/1800/1900
In conclusion:
1. Buying a tmobile HTC in the USA means you can only get 3G signal when using the tmobile network. When travelling abroad you might be able to use 3G, dependent on country.
2. Buying a AT&T HTC in the USA means you can only get 3G signal in the US when using the AT&T network but not on tmobile 3G. When travelling abroad you might be able to use 3G, dependent on country.
3. Buying an HTC HD7 from europe will be able to use neither the tmobile or AT&T network's 3G signal (as AWS 1700/2100mhz is different from normal 2100mhz)
Interestingly, what you may have noticed is that the 2100 3G band is common to all phones, this is also the most widely used 3G band in the world.
Therefore all these phones are fine with 3G everywhere in the world except the USA where the 2 leading GSM networks do not, for some reason, use the 2100mhz band as duplex *
* common question, how is UMTS 2100mhz different from UMTS AWS 2100mhz?
Simple, normal 3G UMTS 2100mhz is duplex (i.e. up and down link use the same frequency). In AWS, the up and downlink use different frequencies, AWS 1700/2100mhz means that tmobile uses 1710-1755 Mhz down & 2110-2155 MHz Up.
Only two networks in the world use AWS, tmobile in the USA and WIND in Canada.
in the rest of the world, where tmobile has a presense, it uses the "normal" 2100 3G band!
Wow, thanks very much colonel, that's an excellent explanation!!
So the T-Mobile HD7 is basically the Europe version with an additional radio (or whatever) to connect to the T-Mobile 3G network?

it has AWS 1700/2100mhz instead of the EU 900mhz
it retains the normal 2100mhz, although this is useless in the USA

Excellent, thanks for the clarification!
It seems that in South Africa all 3G goes over the 2.1GHz frequency but some operators are starting with 900MHz so all will be fine.

Tmo Tab over At&t tab?

Hey everyone,
Just wondering if there any big difference between between the Tmobile and AT&T samsung tab?
Does one have better features or better pre-loaded apps? Are both easily rootable? If so, which is better?
The only internal hardware difference is that the T-Mobile tab supports the T-Mobile 3G bands whereas the ATT tab supports ATT bands. Also, the ATT tab will be better if you were to travel a lot in Europe as it can support European 3G frequencies.
There are also some changes in design on the back of the tab (mostly in regards to color). As for preinstalled apps, I an unsure as I do not own a T-Mobile tab.

The T-Mobile one will work with T-Mobiles faster 3G HSPA+ network. Not at 4G though, just faster than 3G. However, this it not available everywhere.
In the EU, the T-Mobile version will only support Edge, whereas the AT&T version will support 3G.
The most important piece is AT&T version could be used as a phone w Euro firmware and an existing AT&T SIM card. Sounded like you're not an AT&T user but it's doable.
For Tmob tab, you could also set it up as a phone but you will need a data plan then setup GV+IPKall+SIPDroid if you don't want to pay for Skype.

I know it wont wont in the UK, as their 3G frequency is 2100 and i believe the T-Mobile tab uses a different frequency for uploads vs downloads (1700 and 2100).

I got the specs from Samsung's website, they are posted as:
GSM: 850, 900, 1800, 1900; UMTS : Band IV(1700), I(2100) & Wi-Fi
I read the UMTS bands as the AWS 1700/2100, (1700Mhz u/l; 2100Mhz d/l) not AWS(1700/2100) and UMTS 2100 (so only able to download on the 2100, not upload on this frequency).
It does seem a little unclear, but if it really does support 2100Mhz upload and download, that would be awesome!! Would also mean you could unlock it and put a 3G AT&T Sim in it...
Anyone know this for sure?

Band IV is AWS and completely separate from Band I. Even the Samsung website explicitly mentions the bands it supports. European 3G uses Band I so it will work.

That is awesome.. The only thing, other than cost, holding me back was that it might not work in the UK.
Now I just have to convince myself that i will get $350 + monthly data use out of it. Price, though expensive, is not really an issue but if I bought it and didn't use it, i would get into trouble from the missus.... :s
Flash T-Mobile Tab to support AT&T Voice
FYI - I followed Rotohammer's directions and i flashed a T-Mobile Tab, then unlocked it, and after I inserted my AT&T sim, I had phone and Edge:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=886714
However, I'm trying to figure out if I can load a new modem and get AT&T 3G on this tab (bought from T-Mobile)? I tried the bell modem but it didn't work. Am I safe to assume that the T-Mobile hardware will support AT&T 3G and I only need to find the right software?
Thanks - these forums are great... Sorry if this is the wrong spot.

Don't waste your time and or brick your Tab. Tmo Tab will never get 3G on an ATT sim card because it doesn't do 3G on 850/1900mhz band. Hardware doesn't support ATT's 3G bands.

I understand the feeling. I initially went with the Tmobile version but at a data rate coming up to almost $70 after taxes ($59.99 unlimited data for not having my phone with Tmobile), I took it back, paid the $10 restocking fee and went with the at&t version. After roto's rom to enable phone i just plop in my existing unlimited (grandfathered) at&t sim and i'm golden.
Either way I did the analysis....and i believe it was after like 8 months the AT&T version comes out cheaper and if i recall that was WITH the 2GB data plan included.

Tmo does not have a $59.99 data-only plan. It's $39.99 for 5GB, after which you're throttled past the 5GB allotment. No overages.
But i prefer AT&T's $24.99 2GB plan (don't need calling, already have a phone). The price is just right. Still looking to trade my Tmo Tab for an ATT one...
Yup caught me off guard. The the tmo salesman explained it to me instore. If or when I take my phone with tmo I will get a $10 discount on the data plan. Fishy but whatever, I was never a t-mobile customer so I just went along with it but yes normally its 39.99
Bumping this as I was going to get a WiFi only TAB but with its inferior hardware I'm looking at a 3G TAB.
On Amazon the Tmobile version is a lot cheaper at $475 than the AT&T version at $550, not sure why?
Anyway I'll be using it in Europe so it seems the Tmobile version would do the trick with its 2100Mhz frequency?

The AT&T version has always been more expensive...just the way it's been priced I guess. If your only or mainly going to be using it in Europe you will be fine with the T-Mobile version as it will run 3G on 900/2100 over there
If you're keen on digging around with different roms and are comfortable flashing around then go for it. But if you're looking for a smooth out of the box experience off the bat (with calling etc enable) I'd wait and pick up one over there....just my 2 cents

[Q] Is the htc one a world phone?

Idk if I'm using the term right, but I'm with t mobile and I know that they will offer the htc one. But that's rumored to be towards the end of march. But appearntly Europe will be getting it the first of march. So my question is: will all carriers be selling the same EXACT phone? Meaning can I get a euro version when it comes out and use it on t mobile, and still get 2g,3G,and 4g (hspa+,LTE) ? I'm very anxious to get a new phone. I'm down to the htc one and the xperia z.
Yeah it's a world phone, it won't be in the market before 15th march. As clove.co.uk states that. IMO Better to get from your carrier if you don't want to face any issues with network. But if you want fast updates, it's good to purchase from uk.
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
Yes for 2g and 3g, not really for LTE in selected countries... And then I am certain that the LTE band will be tied down to that network provider. I will be amazed if this is not the case because HTC always does this, with exception of the HTC J-Butterfly (only in Japan), the reason behind this is that Japan law requires the phones to have world network support. The Sony XZ defninately covers world support on 2g,3g & 4g
We are in the same boat!

We are in the same boat. I am with Tmobile and have Galaxy S3, but as soon as I saw the leaked image of HTC One, I was instantly fell in love with it and I am surely glad they kept the design. It is the kind of design and material I wanted for a long time. Anyway, cut to the point, I pre-ordered from Clove.co.uk and expansys-usa.com. Whichever can ship it first will have my money. The reason I pre-order instead of waiting is it looks like it will be cheaper this way since I am buying off-contract. Tmobile's phone usually have much higher price than other carriers like ATT. Of course you can buy att one and unlock it, but it is illegal in USA now so that complicates things. Only thing I am worrying about is the compatibility with Tmobile's upcoming LTE network. Since I am living in Houston, TX, it is only logical to think Tmobile's next LTE market will be somewhere in TX if not Houston. But, I saw their LTE band is not the one supported by HTC One. (I saw this in one of forum here. Don't have the link) Tmobile maybe make LTE version of this phone like galaxy note 2, but then that will now complicates the battery life. So I am not sure if I want to have LTE version of HTC One when the battery is not user replaceable. Besides I am more than content with current Tmobile's data speed as HSPA+ in houston area. So my point is if you are sure you will get this phone, pre-order seems the fastest one so far. I picked silver one BTW.
It might sound lazy but I'm actually really confused about the bands for the different networks in my country. I want to get an HTC One but I'm not sure if I will have 3g on my company "VTR", this company is from Chile in South America and I would be really thankful if anyone can give me a hand on this:
The website of the company is: http://www.vtr.com
Please, give me a hand on this as I'm really confused and I have been searching a lot to get more information. This is what I've found:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UMTS_frequency_bands
VTR is at the number IV AWS 1700
Also I found this:
http://www.telecompaper.com/news/vtr-nextel-win-3g-licences-in-chile--690358
VTR, Nextel win 3G licences in Chile
Chile's telecommunications regulator Subtel has granted mobile operators VTR and Nextel spectrum for provision of 3G services. The tender covered three blocks of 30 MHz in the 1700/2100 MHz frequency band. Nextel won two out of three blocks of spectrum up in the 1700/2100MHz frequency bands, while VTR won the remaining block. Nextel's total offer for spectrum blocks B and C reached USD 14.7 million, while VTR won block A with an offer of USD 3.02 million. The new licences aim to boost competition on the Chilean mobile telephony market, currently divided among Entel PCS, Movistar and Claro. The Chilean telecoms market currently reaches 15 million customers. According to Rene Cortazar, minister of transport and communications, the two licence winners have a maximum of one year – that is by the second half of 2010 – to complete their 3G networks deployment across the country.
VTR 3g frecuencies: 1700/2100
I currently have an HTC Desire HD, however, I'm unable to use 3g with my device. Please help me confirm that the ONE will work on this network, else, I will have to change my network
A little bit more information can be found here:
http://www.apecdoc.org/site/chile/2009/06/11/vtr-sets-up-vtr-movil-to-bid-for-3g-licence-chile/
Thank you very much for all your help
The phone doesn't have support for the 1700 band, but will work on the 2100 band offered by your provider. The biggest problem you face is what is the difference between bands for VTS, typically network providers will offer a faster network and or more coverage on one of their bands. If in Chile this is the 2100 band you are away laughing.
Just had a look at the specs of your HTC Desire HD and the news is bad.The new HTC one will the same as your previous phone on that network.
I don't understand what you are saying about your phone not on 3G, the 2100Mhz network is 3G, however it would seem that your provider is offering it's premium higher speed services on 1700Mhz.
I suggest you go to www.gsmarena.com then search for brands of phones that have 1700Mhz radios. So got to say HTC, and under bands select 1700 then filter, you will find only 13.
After checking this, scrub the above and only use it as a super rough guide. Because it states the Sony XZ as 1700Mhz, but no Sony website claims this that I can see.

Thanks a lot, I hope the phone gets 3g, however, I know that Entel (another company in my country) will offer the HTC One on the third or fourth trimester of this year and it might allow LTE connection. If that's the situation, I might consider changing my mobile provider
I really appreciate your answer.
Thank you
its not worth buying the international version anymore if the US carrier versions are the same as the international one..
LTE is moving forward and HSPA+ will stop development in a few years once T-Mobile switch to LTE
im sure the T-Mobile version will be the same as the rest with LTE ready
yes i think only small 4g lte variations

Not true, there is three LTE variants in the US depending on the band eg provider The best US is AT&T which covers all of US. It all comes down to what bands your country decides to go with on LTE.
So it is a toss up between AT&T or UK model depending on your LTE band requirements.
HSPA/WCDMA:
Europe/Asia: 850/900/1900/2100 MHz
GSM/GPRS/EDGE:
850/900/1800/1900 MHz
LTE:
EU: 800/1800/2600 MHz
US (AT&T): 700/850/AWS/1900 MHz
US (TMO): 700/AWS MHz
US (Sprint): 1900 MHz
Asia: 1800/2600 Mhz

No worries, it's my pleasure.
As I said before your current HTC phone should be 3G on your network provider because 2100mhz is 3G.
ANd most unfortunate for you in South America is that they use such a mix of LTE bands covering most of the LTE spectrum, in this case you are better off with the Sony Xperia Z, which covers almost all of the used LTE bands.
I have used Claro in South America which has great coverage, but bad customer service, but I guess you always get that with the big players.
Hi,
I'm on a Canadian provider that has a hard time with getting good phones. I'm on Wind mobile and actually those who are on Mobilicity are in the same boat. When HTC One X came out it wasn't available for Wind or Mobilicity, when HTC One X+ came out it wasn't available either. Only the cheaper versions of One S would work on it, other ones didn't support the bands. I can see that for Canada none of these providers are listed to carry HTC One. Does it support the bands that Wind and Mobilicity operate at? Will it work on it? They operate in AWS
Do a search is been answered a hundred times already

Why hijack this thread, what does your phone turning on or not have anything to do with the topic

Why don't you go back one page and read, I have posted all the bands supported by the phone. AT&T will be your best option for coverage
I've got a bit of a similar question about where this phone will work on a specific network. If I buy an unlocked CDMA version of the HTC one, can I just drop a Verizon sim card into it and use the phone on verizon's network?

There is no CDMA version, and cdma devices do not use sim cards.

only reason i bring that up because the ONE will be on sprint's network which is CDMA, along with the fact that i thought verizon 4g phones used sim cards ( my pantech marauder loner phone had one). thanks for the answer
Hello
Do you know if the European version of the HTC One will be compatible with the American 3G network (ie : AT&T)...
Because last summer I was in USA and with my old HTC (not compatible with AT&T 3G), I was only able to use 2G networks for internet and it was very very bad...
So I'm asking !
Many thanks in advance for the answer !!! :good:

Well, as far as I know, the HTC One will be just one device with no difference with the ones sold in America, Europe, Asia, etc...

[Q] Local carrier has one phone using LTE, am I able to utilize it with the One?

Hello everyone,
I have a question I am hoping can be answered.
I used to own an HTC Dinc with that device I was able to watch YouTube no problem, however I can't watch any videos at all with this new phone.
I am thinking it's just slow connectivity*this is prolly it* but what's so different with my old phone to this?
My local carrier sells this particular model so I bought it second hand, it's a great device don't get me wrong but this one thing is killing it for me.
Is there a way to bring it back to the carrier and have them set it up to use the data like on my Dinc or am I just stuck with crappy connection?
Now with that all said, my local carrier markets 4G LTE but it has only one device which is an LG AS840, I actually asked if I can implement this to my One. They said they can't, I am wondering why wouldn't it work? Is it because the frequencies don't correspond with each other? Or am I missing something entirely?
All I want to do is be able to watch videos when I am not using WiFi*no internet at home atm, I have WiFi at work though*.
Another thing to add as well is, my girlfriend has an S3 which is AT&T branded, well to say it frankly her phone has much better connection than my One. I am also wondering about SIM unlocking, if I SIM unlock will I be able to use a SIM card from her carrier? Currently the carrier she uses is DoCoMo Pacific which uses AT&T branded devices while mine uses Sprint.
If anyone can enlighten me on this subject or even shoot down all my hopes I would appreciate it!!

Who is your carrier, specifically? If your girlfriend is on DoCoMo Pacific, I’m guessing you live in Guam. The Sprint One can only use LTE on the 1900 MHz G-block (Band 25). Currently, I believe that Sprint is the only carrier in the world that uses that frequency/block, meaning the Sprint One will only be able to use Sprint’s LTE network. Since this is part of the physical design of the radio/antenna, it cannot be changed.
Here is the full list of frequencies that the Sprint One can access:
2G/2.5G - GSM/GPRS/EDGE: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
3G - UMTS/HSPA: 1900/2100 MHz with HSPA+ up to 14.4 Mbps
3G - CDMA: 800/1900 MHz for Sprint
4G - LTE: Sprint: 1900 MHz

In order to access the UMTS/HSPA bands, you would have to SIM-unlock. You would have to find out if there’s a carrier in Guam that transmits on those 3G frequencies (1900/2100 MHz) if you want to do things like stream video because the 2G/2.5G is very likely not fast enough.

My carrier is IT&E.
So doing a SIM unlock will help me at least switch to a different carrier, I was actually thinking about doing it just to switch. But as I was reading the various SIM unlock threads here, it's still pretty sketchy.
How about that LG AS840 using LTE on my carrier, or should I throw that thought out the window?
I will look around and see what kind of prices the carrier's offer, I dont want to be on contract so maybe prepaid is the way to go*I'm actually off contract but still pay my contracted amount.
This device is exceptional but the data speeds here locally suck.
