Updating to new roms help - Please :)

Hey, urm new to the rooting business so please bare with my newbness. (i have tried searching)
Can someone quickly run me through updating a rom..
i.e Cyans just released an update, i understand i need to download and flash. But do i need to wipe before flashing? do i need to then re-flash my theme after flashing the new rom? So, does flashing an updated rom loose you all your data?
Thanks, love you guys.
If you're going from one Google based ROM (Cyanogen, JF) then you shouldn't need to wipe. If it's a HTC based ROM, then you would need to wipe.
So go ahead and flash, you shouldn't have any problems. If you find that you get stuck in a bootloop, just boot in to recovery then wipe and reflash.
If you dont have apps2sd and you wipe, you will loose them. If they're on your ext partition they will remain there.

Confused about FRF72

<<Reposted from QA, couldn't move the post myself>>
I'm confused with FRF72, why is it only 2MB?! That is very small. Is this meant to patch the earlier FRF50 which I have running right now?
Even if it is/or isn't a patch, has anyone tried to run the ROM ZIP WITHOUT WIPING so to save from having to restore Titanium backup? I can't be bothered with the whole process until the weekend is over, unless I can upgrade without wiping. Please let me knwo if any of you have attempted to do that and have you succeeded? Thanks.
When I upgraded 2.1 to 2.2 and was curious, I didn't wipe and the 2.2 successfully booted, and everything all the settings and apps were intact, but it was force closing every single time I tried to run any app, so after that, I wiped, and then it was fine.
I don't want to go through that whole process again though, this time being its 2.2 older beta to newer beta, so it might work without a wipe right?
if u dont wipe u will be stuck in a boot loop. i did a nandroid and then flashed it only to land in the loop. then i wiped and flashed and all was well. thank goodness for nandroid

[Q] Question about upgrade

I am pretty sure but just want to check, if i upgrade from cm6 to cm7 will i lose all data on my phone? Also if i get to cm7 and do updates will those also erase data?
1. Don't post questions in this section
2. You can upgrade from cm6 to cm7 without wiping, and will retain all your data. However if you encounter problems or force close, you might have to, but I've seen a lot of people upgrade without wiping and it went fine.
3. "If i get to cm7 and do updates will those also erase data" I have no idea what you're asking.
I think he means will flashing CM7 nightly builds over the top of each other cause data loss? In which case, no.
i didnt see him mention nightlies anywhere. but to answer his question, you can just do a regular upgrade without losing any data. i would do a nand backup before just in case, and if you DO have any problems you can restore it.
but i had no problems upgrading cyanogen rom. as long as you stay within the same ROM, and move from an older to newer version, its ok. but you can upgrade from cyan 2.2 to stock 2.3, for example. full wipe is needed there.

{Q} Updating custom ROM

Let's say i have gignerDX5 installed and want to update to v6. Do I have to backup all my apps and data (sms, phonebook) again?
Simple answer is no, you can just upgrade and it will keep all user data.
You should however make a backup in Xrecovery just in case something goes wrong, if all goes well then either move the backup to PC for later or just delete.
I updated from Froyobread to GingerDX and still kept my data and apps.
I make somethimes fullfactory in Xrecovery,if I switched to new room. It´s not bat to make back up in Xrec.of old room. It´s your game, wher you have back up.I use Titanum backup pro and my acount for phonebook and calendar.I do´nt need anything else for change the room.
Hi...
I have a question, and I didn't wanna create new thread, cuz its related to title
When I flash a new rom, its recommended to do a Full Wipe... Do I have to do that before or after flashing a Rom?
You don't need to do a full wipe when you update GingerDX. Just install it and reboot. I didn't have any bugs by not making a full wipe.

Click to collapse
If you're coming from 2.1 to DX do a wipe, I tried first time yesterday installing rom and got stuck on cyanogen mod boot screen. Did a wipe, reinstaled and worked.
So do wipe if coming from other rom

[Q] Installing a ROM and Updating

Hey guys,
Sorry if this seems really noobish, but I seem be to kinda lost in all of this ROM'ing goodness.
I have read up on installing custom roms and plan on doing so but I have a couple of questions first before I take that last step (already unlocked and rooted on my One) - note: I have read through the guides but I still seem a little confused as to what exactly changes.
I notice that all tuts mention that you will lose all data on your phone. Does this include installed apps or are we just talking system files needed for the new rom? I have my phone setup already and have my apps backing up with Helium (Carbon) but this is something I seem to be a little confused with
Secondly, using something like CWM (Premium), can I update my ROM quickly and easily without losing any data?
I know that unlocking my bootloader will not get me OTA's so I am looking forward to using many of the awesome ROMs here on the site!
1) When you flash a rom, you need to do a full wipe in aroma.
Full wipe will erase all but not the sd, so your app in home, your background, your account will be erased.
2) You can upgrade your rom with CWM if is the same rom and the base isn't different.
If the base is different you have to do a full wipe.
One more
How likely is base to change for a ROM package? And if I have to flash that new ROM package instead of doing the update through CWM, am I back at square one again with my apps and data or is it just updating what it needs to?
Thanks again for the help!
Then:
Now, all the rom is based on 1.29.401.13.
When it will change (it depens from htc) and you will flash the latest update of rom, you have to do a full wipe, and you will lose all file, settings and other.
Instead, if you have to flash an update like: you're on 2.5 to 2.6, you can flash the rom with only dalvik cache and cache wipe.
But it depens, you always have to read in thread rom
I guess its not so big of a deal considering I can backup most of my apps using Helium and the rest of the apps can just be redownloaded if I keep a list. Configurations should be backed up anyways.
Thanks for the help!
If you're rooted and you will restore your app after a full wipe, i advise you titanium backup.
With this you can do a flashable zip with all your apps and data
Thanks!
I will take a look at Titanium backup and see what it can do! It would only make sense that someone would invent a way to backup all your apps and data (no matter what) to be able to restore them after a ROM update that wipes the phone completely!
Titanium backup can do this
However, only data app, not system app.
If you backupping system app too, you can have issue with new update of rom
