[GRIPE]Native resolution and screen shots[/GRIPE] - Touch CDMA Android Development

Not sure if I've been around long enough to ***** but there is something that's been bothering me about ROM releases here and the cooks posting of their new ROMs. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the work they do and would never in any way hope to detract from their labors. But I'd like to ask that all ROM cooks who post screen shots of their ROMs do so in the native resolution of the Vogue. We get a really distorted sense of what the ROMs will look like on our phones unless we run a non native LCD density, which makes the screen look all blurry. I'd much rather have a more accurate representation of what I'd be seeing on my device. Or at the very least upload both resolutions side by side. I hope I'm not sounding negative, as that isn't my intention. Keep up the AWESOME work guys.

I know, I know. But that's not my point. HVGA shot are unrealistic representations of what we would see on our devices. Sure they look great in the screen shots, but on an actual device, HVGA (IMHO) looks like ass. I'd just like people to start putting up QVGA shots too so those of us who don't like the fuzziness of HVGA can get a feel for what a certain build might look like too.

hvga isnt all that bad. But alot of these later builds are only hvga, so its impossible to make a qvga screenshot. I tell you what though, my eclair build is capable of qvga so when i put out rls2 i will put up qvga sceenshots as well as hvga

Awesome, I'd love that! Thanks man.

...don't think screenshot apps work that way.
afaik:
Screenshot apps will always return an image representing what's sent to the display, NOT what's actually displayed. So basically, any distortion/blurring created when a non-native display is used will not show in a screenshot. So, afaik, the only way to deliver what the OP is looking for is to take an external digcam and snap photo of the phone itself.
Maybe OP would like to volunteer to do this himself and share with the community?

Guys...I KNOW this. What I'm asking is for people to stop posting only HVGA screen shots and start posting QVGA as well.

Convert to the dark side. Start running 428x320 @ 144 DPI....you won't go back.

Yes, my master +1 on this. I kept going back to 240x320 until I tried this resolution. It's actually quite nice.

I'm about to try it. Does it mess up any apps?

I will give it a try.
How do I install "428x320 @ 144 DPI"?
Myn's Installation only shows 2 options:
"NoMoRootFS Instructions for SDCard:
Download either the 320x480 or 240x320 version"
Thanks!

It's not out, but a system dump has already been released here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=600190
the bootanimation is made of two series of png files, not a gif as we are used to... i attached it, maybe someone can throw it together as a gif and resize it, this way we could implement it as a bootscreen.
edit: upload does not work from here...
Upload to somewhere like 4shared.com or mediafire.com and then post the link here.
Cheers
heres two animations
http://www.mediafire.com/?yymzywzijb5
I resized it and applied it to my phone, but something went wrong, it's stuck in a crazy reboot where a messed up version of the animation starts off, then freezes, then starts over again

well, probably someone at google thought it would look better that way...
but we can try to put them on the hero in portrait aswell, i am afraid that it might look ugly if the picture doesn't fill the screen either vertically or horizontally

same here, please try again. we need an animated gif, not a jpeg.
I had to install GIMP to do it as CS4 sucks for resizing animated gifs. Anyway, here you go, resized to 320w x 480h and rotated 90 degrees CW. There may be some quality loss due to the resize but I'm not sure if that can be helped.

doesn't work looks just wired, some patterns are there, but it is totally crapped up.
edit: also gave me a bootloop. gonna look into the properties of the gifs now...
That's not good
There must be more to it than simply resizing and rotating the original file.
here ya go
the problem was that most of the png files were indexed colors with a very small palette. i converted them to rgb and made a gif that works. i had to resize the image to make it fit, i did NOT stretch it (no need as the animation doesn't touch the two sides). came out kinda nice, just try it. apply as update.zip in recovery, or use which ever way you like to get the files into your phone as always no responsibility & do a nandroid backup first
download the bootscreen and apply as update.zip
if you want to go back to stock go here.
Thanks man, that's cool you figured it out.
I'm going to do a nandroid backup later anyway as I want to try a couple of themes so I'll give this a try too.

Bit on the Grey side?
I wouldn't swear to it but my Dialers might work on 6.1 phones, even if the themes do not. After all they are only replacing the default WM dialer images and they haven't changed for ages. Of course you wouldn't have options for video calling etc that a proper phone canvas has.
Thanks.
Would you be able to tell me what are the files you need to skin to change the default dialer?

There are 21 of them. Easiest way to see what they are would be to download one of my dialer cabs and extract the files with wince cab manager.

Here they are, ripped and zipped!

What's wrong with this one?
2.1 Sense FTW.
Hero builds on the vogue have two issues. Firsly the bluetooth doesn't work, because hero frameworks handle BT differently. And secondly the camera doesn't work properly either. You have to use a third party camera app.
I can probably update someone's old version to work, but as far as I can remember the sense build runs about the same speed..
I'll have a look later this week.

This is great, but there are a couple of things that are still way to big (lockscreen, check boxes and radio button e.t.c). If someone can point me to where I can get the images sizes for MDPI I am happy to resize them, I just don't know what size they are supposed to be :S

same here... check boxes, radio buttons, text boxes and dropdowns are HUGE!
and could you post a screenshot so we know what has been changed... like the 3G and signal icons? Mine didn't change to the look like the ones in the thread you posted.
He wrote that uploaded theme is wrong and upload the MDPI late on. For those who don't know the size of MDPI .png you can view them from your original MDPI folder in framework-res.apk
I can help with resize too
I have been watching this thread for a while to see if it would be updated, but no luck...if anyone has any luck porting or getting the proper size icons and whatnot, I would be very interested in the theme...
oh... i thought the new one was already uploaded... i guess i'll just have to have some patience then

The status bar is the right resolution, but pretty much everything else is still too big. I am looking at resizing the rest myself, but I am having trouble with the .9 files. I have been reading tutorials but still, very confusing...

Use the LCD density changer app, I'd upload but I can't right now. If you set it to 120 everything will look better. Try that.
many of u have seen the screen shots and u kno it works. the key factor is that this theme ( personal experience here ) works best on a 2.2 ( froyo ) rom.
yes some things are still out of wack.. but the status bar and notifications flow almost perfectly, the rest can be changed by the user anyways.
