There is something about me that doesn't like using Internet Explorer. On my phone (Sony Ericsson K850i) I use the Opera Mini 4 Beta browser and love the way that it renders sites and you can zoom in and out etc...
I installed Opera Mobile on my HTC hoping that it would be exactly the same as mini but I was very disappointed Not only does it not have the text for the soft keys but it doesn't accept touch screen inputs for pressing links and text boxes. Also you don't have the zoom in/out function so you have to see a fully rendered screen or and "everything on one column" rendering that cripples the content.
Is there a decent browser for Windows Mobile? What I am looking for is something that works exactly like Opera Mini but with more compatibility with flash etc...
Any ideas?
At the least I would like to be able to install Opera mini but it comes as a .jad file (Java Midlet?). Is there any way of installing these as my Kaiser doesn't know what to do with the file atm.
Thanks for any help
Oliver
There must be someone out there who uses a browser that they're happy with?
Is there a version of Opera that works with the touch screen?
Thanks
You don't have Java on your phone? Opera mini is free and it is a Java Midlet so you could try and see how you like it without spending any money. There is another free browser that I have called Minimo.
LINK to direct CAB download-- http://www.mozilla.org/projects/minimo/
It isint the perfect browser either but it does alot of what Opera does and lets you set it with preferences too. Give it a shot and see what you think. Don't like it just remove. I will look on my phone to see if I can extract the Java .exe for you.
I use netfront 3.3 its got better functions than PIE and its back and forward functions using your D-pad is very usefull. as for opera if you want it to scroll like opera mini just enable touch and grab on opera v8.65. it will select links as opera mini does it just wont zoom in like opera mini
Ceck out the articles at http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Web Browsing, browsers
picsel browseris my fav. look around enough and you'll find it
Thanks for the replies!
I'll definitely have a look round for the browsers you mentioned.
I would much appreciate it if you could provide a Java app to enable Java on my phone too
BTW, I'm using Schap's latest ROM if that helps.
Im a bit confused here about the op. Am I the only person that has a copy of Opera Mobile that does everything that the op said it doesn,t do? Which version of Opera mobile did you try? I use O.M on my kaiser and everything you said it doesnt do, mine does.. Ive got touchscreen interactivity aswell as touch scrolling, i can zoom in and out, 3 can resize the screen format to desk top, just fit and one column. Im runing Opera mobile 8.65 for Windows Mobile Pocket PC. By anychance did you accidentily download the smartphone version?
As above - op must have downloaded opera instead of opera-mini...
I'm posting using o-m and must say it's one of the best if not best browser for the wm platform
WOW!
Just installed Picsel and I love it.
The GUI is a bit dodgy but that's cos it's designed for the clie but I love everything else.
Thanks
(Bit of an effort to find a download though)
Ah, I downloaded the Smartphone version. That's prob why I don't have the touch screen thingy.
BTW Subliminal, there is a difference between Opera Mini and Opera Mobile. Opera Mini is what I have on my Sony Ericsson k850i and I would have thought that Opera Mobile worked similarly. It does all the same things but not as smoothly as Opera Mini.
Opera Mini is for Java based phone apps. Opera Mobile is for WM platform.
Opera Mobile has more functions (I think?)
but one main difference is that Opera Mini is free whereas opera mobile isn't.
A direct shortcut can be created to launch opera mini without the need to load the java midlet first. A quick hex edit can skip the connection permissions and another quick tinker can allow direct links from emails to open in opera mini. Sounds more work than it is.
Ive just been checking out the Netfront v3.4 technical preview
https://www.access.co.jp/english/nfppc/agree_34.html
its alot better than v3.3 and has some very nice features. its got a similar zoom feature to opera mini4 its a scroll and zoom. plus the visual bookmark is nice also. I cant wait for it to go to retail I will be getting it. opera9 will be ready soon also but ive not seen a preview of it yet. from what ive read though its also going to be alot better than v8.65 and incorperate feature of mini opera4 like the page zooming
I've just downloaded opera mini 4 and have installed it onto my phone.
I have one querey.......
when I was instaling it and when I first used it, it say
this program is connecting to .......port 1080...... requires airtime..... you maybe chaged.....

I'm also using netfront 3.4 since a little time. Very, very nice !
but... I can't use it with a wifi or USB connection (error : TCP connect...) ... Answer acces.co about that but no technical support on this version ;-(

It must be something to do with your settings, Ive just tried it with usb and wifi and both connect fine. Infact it connects quicker with usb than it did with v3.3.

Mmmm... don't reach the solution ;-( , even after modifying the browser settings. Always the same message...
"Cannot load page. Check that you are properly connected to the network. Type : TCP connect"
dolbe, can you give me your settings for this great browser ?
MS DeepFish is the best browser I've seen yet. It's in Beta for now though and has limitations. It's similar to Iphone's Safari - which is great.
Opera Mobile 9 will support zooming, just like Opera Mini. I asked Opera for a release date, but they won't say anything. It's supposed to be released "soon".
O.K. Guys and Gals: Long time reader, very infrequent poster. Anyway, Tilt with latest AT&T stock ROM. Seems incapable of rendering one web page that I cannot live without:
http//adds.aviationweather.noaa.gov
I've gotten some good suggestions around the web, but so far no joy. My VZW 6700 CAN render this page very clearly using PIE.
Tried:
IE 6.1 cab
Opera 9.5
Cingular disable proxy
Open to any suggestions as I hit the road Monday and want to like this handset. This issue is a definite deal killer as I need to be able to check weather wherever I happen to be.
Couple of screen grabs for your viewing pleasure. As you can see if you look at relative file sizes, there is a LOT less data in the Tilt grab.
TIA,
Bob Duckworth

Guess I should try Mini then. Mini uses a proxy server to render before shipping to the handset??
Dumb question, but which version does one choose for the 8925? Its not listed.
Thanks,

Netfront 3.5 beta blows them all out to Pluto
Checkout my screenshots below. Netfront 3.5 rendered the site within 3 seconds or so. I'll do a video of that loading as well in a few minutes.
I'm absolutely floored by Netfront 3.5s capabilities for a month or so since I've been using it. Only gripe.. its a crazy resource hog (which is ok on my Tilt as its got ample RAM) and causes most other resource intensive apps/functions to not run smoothly.
But.. no biggie. Its flick browsing is just sooooper butter smooth. And best of all it DOES NOT pre-cache/render any site on some remote server before displaying on your device..
I absolutely love it... love it love it love it..
actual video of your specified site loading on NF 3.5 beta
download the .rar (750k) or the .zip (5mb) and the video is in .avi format (19mb). Check it out.

Hi,
Skyfire is a free, downloadable mobile web browser that allows you to experience the internet on your phone exactly like on your PC. Now, you can use the full web from your mobile phone with unprecedented speed and simplicity – without the typical restrictions and limitations that current ‘mobile web’ efforts offer. It’s “The Web”, not some mobile web. (Taken from their site)
The best feature in this? "Unlike other mobile browsers, Skyfire supports the desktop version of Adobe Flash applications so sites, including those that serve-up video and music, are rendered exactly as you would expect - just like your PC."
Now... Will Opera support flash or not, we can always install this on Xperia - or any windows mobile - to get flash support for sites...
NOTE: I just read in the main forum the following: "Please note that this board does not tolerate cracks, serials, pirated versions or the posting of software that should have been aquired by legal means and we will remove (delete) them when found. Please help us keep this site clean by posting links of that sort in this tread as well as telling us if you have found anything on the ftp site."
So in light of that, i have removed the link to download Skyfire via RapidShare from here. Anyways, i'm sure if you register on the site, you'll get your hands on it - since even i got it and i am in Pakistan!
Best regards.
This is all well and good, but currently, skyfire doesn't support VGA or WVGA devices!!! Is there a fix/workaround to this?

It doesn't? Well it's a Beta, so hopefully will soon.
Wow thanks for telling me about this. I installed it and it looks very promising. Not to mention the pages load really fast.

Because they optimise the most common pages on their server
It's a really nice app

Awesome!!!!
Well after using it for a few days I switched to Opera Mobile bet 9.6. I actually like it quite a bit better then skyfire. Yes skyfire load pages faster then anything I've seen but zooming on those pages takes time and trying to scroll is bad. Opera's new program takes full time to load the page but once it's loaded the scrolling and moving is very good.
In case you can't download this, then i just updated the first post with a rapidshare link to download this.
Skyfire has shut down nonUS winmo 1.5 server access as of July1, 2010. Android v2 still works in Australia. Have found an alternative but costs ~$30 after a 7 day trial, Mach5 Web @ www.netacceler.com. This is a Hongkong based server and may encounter some geolocking by some sites (such as ABC.net.au iview). This is the only video enabled browser for winmo that I'm aware of. It doesn't 'remember' usename and passwords as Opera does.
in the past , i used to LIKE skyfire. Why? because it supports flash and other stuffs. it plays videos on other sites not just youtube. What I don't like about it TODAY is that it does not allow other countries, like the Philippines to use it. now I'm stucked at old opera. so sad.
And it still suffers from the very issues that have been there since it's introduction (checkboard issue, slowness of scrolling and zooming...). Sadly one more app among many others for which development has been stopped due to the imminent lauch of Windows Phone 7. I think now we definitely have to face the fact that our platform (Windows Mobile) is dying.
today i read a news about a new upcoming browser named skyfire.
and what i am asking me: when the open beta comes to my country and i install it on my diamond... can i change the default browser für touchflo3d?
here is a version i tried using. only half the screen is skyfire and the other half is today screen. check it out. maybe it works for you.
Skyfire is a pretty good web browser for mobile phones. It was apparently found to be the fastest - mostly because it renders the pages from a central server.
I believe you have to register with them to fully use the software (you need a Skyfire account).
Also, there is a new release, but it still does not support VGA devices yet.
- Keirmeister
yes but can i change the default browser in touch flo 3d?
maybe in some time no one wants to use opera and all want to use skyfire.
seemts that its just a simple shortcut to change.
Skyfire is not compatible to VGA right now.
I tried out Skyfire on my diamond and there is a workaround the half screen problem. Other than the fact that flash works, i don't think it is better than Opera 9.5 at least not until a VGA version comes out.
I uninstalled Skyfire and now I have the problem where PIE is now my default browser instead of Opera. Whenever I tap on a link on my rss reader or email, it goes to PIE by default. Is there a way to change my default browser back to opera?
Just Re-run the WM_6_HTC_PPC_Opera9.cab in your windows directory, and it will re-install Opera and fix the link issues. Your bookmarks, history and other browsing data will not be harmed.
Skyfire 0.85 is out, with VGA support. Just tried it and it works like a dream on my Diamond, even able to watch top gear on iPlayer with it.
Hi,
Installed on my MDA Compact and it works well. However, it won't connect using wifi.
Any solutions?
Regards

I just downloaded it too and mananged to get a video playing from the iPlayer but I don't get any sound. Did you have any issues with sound at all?
(I'm on Dutty's V3.2 ROM)
To answer another question the latest version works on VGA but allegedly not on WVGA so Touch HD users may be disappointed. You can download it here http://get.skyfire.com/ and yes, Skyfire asks you if you want to make it the default browser.

Maybe... but uninstalling it even when it's not default resets your default browser to PIE. Which sucks.
i cannot download it,has anybody have vga cab?
Just open http://get.skyfire.com/ in your mobile browser, you'll get to download the cab directly from the phone!
i have opened it 100 times but i cant download,it always get me back to getskyfire.com.
i am not in usa,i am in europe, can somebody please post/upload cab???

This is because unlike PIE/Opera Mobile, skyfire downloads the webpage on a regular pc, then sends you "an image" of the website, in a low quality.
So it's not actually that fast, zooming and panning are weak on it.

You can get flash in opera mobile
Check the developments and hacking forum on XDA, it's near the top.
Look for Adobe Flash Lite 3.1 and a compatible Opera build =]
What is the best and most user friendly browser for Android phones?
or is it Google's?
Didn't realise there were other browsers out there for Android until your post.
Tried out the Dolphin one, it works great. Gonna use that one now.
Didn't install the Steel one as the market comments say that the previous version was better.
The browser on the Hero is slightly customized from the standard google one isn't it? Dolphin doesn't have multi-touch I guess?
I currently use 3 browsers, depending on what I need at that time :
- the HTC Hero internal browser : multitouch and can handle flash
- dolphin browser : has the best interface, but does not support multitouch on the Hero. Maybe on future Android platform (2.0) ? And also does not support flash.
- opera mini 4.2 because it is the fastest, especially on slower (GPRS) networks. No flash, no multitouch, worse interface.

The Cyanogen mod for the G1 supports multitouch with Dolphin, but just like you stated, I have to agree on 2 of you options:
"- dolphin browser : has the best interface, but does not support multitouch on the G1. Maybe on future Android platform (2.0) ? And also does not support flash.

I'm happy on the standard browser.
But having come from WM where I used the beta version of Opera Mobile 9.7 I'm looking forwars to using the Opera Turbo on my Hero when they release it finally. It sped up browsing a hell of a lot ( just a few seconds to load any website)
dont like the standard brower at at. it is just too slow, have too wait 5-10 sec before something shows up... just too long.
even my old nokia e51 works faster.
Dolphin
Dolphin has a pretty big footprint (check in Taskiller), and has the annoying habit of starting spontaneously, even if not used. For me a reason to stop using it.
Looks like Dolphin has working multi-touch on the Hero now. I am going to give it a try for a few days.
Dolphin for me
Hi guys,
Just to give u my opinion.
I used steel a while ago, not sure which version it was, i found it ok but no better if not worse than the standard browser.
Switched back to standard one until i stumbled across this thread and found dolphin was available.
I find dolphin drastically quicker and the whole interface a lot better.
Multi touch on hero IS supported on the latest version but tbh its not a feature i find myself using that much anyway.
The gestured browing on dolphin is also a treat once it is set up, takes a bit getting used to but stick with it, its great.
Just my thoughts guys
Dolphin is quite interesting. I'm trying it out right now. Addition of multitouch is quite important for me. I'm enjoying it so far.

So you made it the default browser at one time or another. I did never select that option (this choice comes up if I want to open a link).
I choose the program I want to use from the program list... for example wikipedia is text based and very fast on Opera when I am on a GPRS network.
I don't use the bookmarks widget ...
