Total Noob - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario Software Upgrading

Hey all, I just wanted to say that I love this site. I have have an 8125 for over 4 years now never did anything to it except change the background colors around with TK Creator if I remember right anyway about two weeks ago I dropped my phone while trying to put it in the case on a tile floor. Thankfully it didn't outright break but the screen went to a faded white but it was still somewhat useabe
I found a parts phone on ebay and I managed to take both phones apart to make 1 good phone and the best part was that the ebay phone was almost brand new. The case was in great shape and the only thing wrong with the phone was the screen was bad. Not bad for less than $20 bucks shipped
I found your site when I was trying to get instructions about how to take my 8125 apart and it was great to while I was making a new fone anyway I decided to make my first attempt at a ROM flash
The Wiki page was great. It walked me thru the process without a single hitch and now I'm pretty happy. I just got done with the flash and it looks great. I chose Cracing CR96 and I like it so far
I still have a ton to learn but I downloaded Cracing's kitchen I'm going to be looking into that next
Thanks for all the posts and the great advise that helped make this go way easier that I ever thought it would be
And to all those other Noobs out there that haven't taken the plunge yet, I would say do lots of searches and read all the post that you can related to your questions because chances are your questions have been asked and answered several times already
Thanks again
Sam

New (but not green) to this forum AND this phone!

Hello all! I look forward to filling my brain with info about how to trick my diamond out to the max. I'm not new to installing apps and roms. The phone I owned up until last week was the Siemens SX66 (aka HTC Blue Angel). Had it for 5 years. It met it's demise about a week ago by falling out of my pocket and falling from the 2nd floor balcony to the concrete ground on the 1st floor.....END OF PHONE. Decided to stay within the HTC series, as I think they are a great phone maker. I searched around for a mixture of budget vs. quality. Didn't care if I had the newest model of a phone, only that it was "smart" enough for how I like to play with them. I had done MANY rom flashes and app adds to my sx66, so I'm very familiar with doing that stuff. I searched on EBay for about a week and ran across a phone dealer that sells demo model phones for used prices. Sure enough, he was selling a touch diamond (1) floor demo model for $175.00. I snatched that puppy up QUICK. When it arrived, the phone condition was FLAWLESS. Not a scratch, not even a fingerprint was on it. Still had the original factory screen protector on the screen! Came in the original box with ALL accessories and documentation. He could have sold this phone as NEW and no one would have known the difference, except for the absence of shrink wrap on the box. Anyways, I look forward to tricking this phone out. It came with wm 6.1 installed. There's something called a HARDspl that I have to install before flashing it? Gotta learn about THAT first. Don't even know what that is. Also, just ordered a 2850mah extended life battery, included with a modified battery cover. That's TWICE the battery staying power of the (already extended) 1340mah battery that came with the phone. Got it for 13 BUX on EBay! I hit ALL the good deals for this phone. Anyways, please feel feel to hit me up with any advice, tips or suggestions you might have for me regarding the phone. I'd appreciate any advice I can get!
Hey Gastro,
Welcome to the world of Diamond modding. I've had a cdma diamond since launch and I still love it. It's getting close to its end of life so I might be moving on shortly but for now it's still my baby.
Like you mentioned, first thing you have to do is the hardspl, once you do that it opens it up to all the rom flashing that your hear desires. You'll have to try a few different ones out to see what you like. The diamond comes loaded with wm6.1 which I'm sure you'll soon upgrade to 6.5 or 6.5.x. I run a custom cooked 6.5.x. rom. You'll learn the differences between the different wm versions as well as the differnt versions of touchflo or the newer sense builds. Feel free to ask me any questions about flashing, modding, cooking roms whatever I'm pretty comfortable with all those things. Anyway good luck and I hope you love the phone as much as I do.

Is it wrong to return a phone because i accidentally scratched it(within 30 days)

I bought my phone from best buy less than 30 days ago, i still have my receipt and all.
my phone is also rooted.
sadly it slipped out of my hand and has a scratch on the touch screen.
if i returned the phone for an exchange, would best buy honor it?
the phone works fine..but if i can can a new one before my 30 days it up, i would like to.
* do the phones update automatically..assuming best buy still has the phones running 1.5.
If i remember right, they did not attempt to update my phone when i got it. they just transfered he service and gave the phone on as soon as they gave it to me.

Are you kidding or
Ive returned phones before.
my concern is whether ill be stuck with sprints unrootable 2.1
I am just confused is this a joke? Honestly I would be surprised if they give you another phone. I could see them giving you a samsung moment or something but I guess their customer service is always the best during the first thirty days.
lol this for real ?
Make sure you get a screen protector this time.
do it up, i bought my htc hero less then a week ago 24 hours after purchase i had updated, then found out about rooting. returned it promptly and told them i updated and it runs like crap and i want nothing to do with it now, they swapped it out in less then 5 mins...
Zaggs invisible shield is the best screen protector ive ever owned, lifetime warranty its a bit pricy but well worth it... best buy mobile employee will even put it on for you at time of purchase

does the 2.1 update look different from the 1.56?
(assuming the person at the register knows the difference between the firmware)
please stop posting about stuff like this, this is the MOST infuriating thing to read. people complain about phones being so expensive, and this is why. IT WAS YOUR MISTAKE!!! deal with and learn to keep it in a case with a protector next time. honestly if you do replace it I hop you DO get 2.1, karma is a b!&*h.
I still would like to see one shred of evidence correlating high phone prices with people returning phones within 30 days.
These phones are expensive because these manufacturers have delusions as to the value of their creations.
I say if you are within the 30 days and you want to eat it, **** it out and promptly return it to Best Buy for a new one then by all means go for it.
Sorry for the interruption. Now, everyone please continue to have a nervous breakdown over this...
as for the OP....good luck getting them to exchange it for you considering the quite obvious scratch they are going to see.
As the poster above stated, what is the relation in returned phones and high prices? And the OP just asked a simple question, so let's answer nicely.
OP, what harm could be done from going? If I were you, I'd give it a shot.

A small word to OP and all a-like:
We are here on a site that frequently voids warranties.
So when we do anything to the device that harms it in any way, we ought to take full responsibilities for our own actions, and not to result in actions that could be described as fraud.

"Jumping in Head First" or "I'm Thinking About Buying a Droid"

I've been stuck in the limbo that is WM for what feels like way too long. I was comfortable with it; I knew it. But recently I started a love affair with Android on my TP2 thanks to HaRET and my unending curiosity. So I put an listing up on craigslist asking if anyone had an Android device they wanted to sell at a reasonable price. Within minutes, I had an e-mail from someone almost a hundred miles away saying he had a Droid he would sell for $200.. Seems like a good deal as most of the Droids on e-bay are still >$300. Unfortunately, he wants to do this deal the day after tomorrow, and has committed to driving most of the way to my city to do it.
So I come to this wonderful community that I have lurked in for quite a while in the hopes that you can give me the heads up. What do I need to know, and what do I need to look for?
Naturally, the first thing I am going to do is call the big V and confirm that the ESN is clean. But what about the phone itself? Is there anything I need to look out for? Any known issues? I read something about the back of the screen getting scratched from the sliding mechanism in another thread. Is that just the plastic that gets scratched up, or can the LCD itself get damaged?
I have also read a lot about this "locked bootloader." I think I understand this as not being able to install custom roms, but still allowing you to root. I was under the impression that rooting your device basically took care of that, so now I understand that I was wrong, and will further research what rooting is on my own. But I also see that some people have custom roms available here on XDA and that others are running Froyo on their Droids. Its all very confusing, and under normal circumstances, I would take a few days to read, research, and teach myself. But at the moment, I feel a little under the gun, as this deal won't last forever.
Anything you guys or gals can tell me would probably be more helpful than you think. I feel like I'm trying to make the switch from XP to Ubuntu.. (heh) Any and all posts will be read. Thanks.
The Droid doesn't have a locked bootloader and can be rooted easily. I bought one just like you're thinking of, I don't even have VZW service.
I put Froyo on it and I like it even though I haven't rooted yet.

The back of the screen has a little layer of plastic to keep from scratching some of the plastic. It tears pretty easily, but it doesnt matter as it will not actually damage the LCDs/LEDs, just scratch the plastic back up a little bit.
The Droid does not have a Locked BootLoader, only the Milestone does. Some people do know how to get around this though.
Rooting a Droid is actually quite simple. All you need (if you are a n00b, like me and you) is to download the DroidRootKit from the web which does the most complicated work for you, while allowing you to do some of the simpler stuff.
When you Root, you are brought back to Android 2.0.1 and you cannot download apps, so you might want to download ROM Manager (Premium or Regular) and back it up for downloading Eclair and Froyo ROMs later.
If you do not want to do that, then you should download a ROM (ie, UltimateDroid) place it on your SD card after Rooting, and install that through SPRecovery or ClockWorkMod Recovery.
People who are running Froyo are either rooted and downloaded a custom ROM, or forced the update through the download at the Verizon site.
The first thing you do when you meet that guy is ask if it is Rooted or ever has been.
Then you ask him if it has ever had water damage or any problems with the LCD screen.
If he says yes to the first question, good.
If he says yes to the second or third question (water damages and/or LCD problems) then DO NOT BUY IT.
(results may vary)

Another one bites the dust. Thanks, everyone!

Well y'all, according to FedEx, my Epic should arrive at my office sometime tomorrow - still torn as to if I made the right decision against the EVO, but I am banking on loving the hardwired keyboard once winter hits and all the capactive touchscreen only people find out how hard it is to type in the cold, to be happy with my decision - still not sure tho, ugh.
I wanted to write to thank everyone in this forum who helped keep my phone going well past its time. After replacing the housing, two touch screens, a new battery, several ROMs, and over 3 years its time to put this puppy to rest. I feel like I earned a new toy.
While I was never able to develop anything, I hope that my willingness to test things and give feedback while answering other people's problems from time to time was of service to the community.
So here is the deal... I am happy to gift this bad boy to any dev that is in need of a testing device. Although I am willing to give this to a developer, I would appreciate if they at least paid the shipping costs.
If there are any takers, let me know and we will try to work something out. If I have no takers, I will flash it back to winmo and try and sell it back under Sprint's trade-in deal.
Thanks again, everyone, for, as so many people have said, breathing new life into a device that probably should have left this earth a long long time ago.
One use I found for these...
I have a few of these, 2 I use, 1 for me, 1 for another family member.
Another one, I flashed some small build of Droid, downloaded eReader,
then downloaded a bunch of e-books for it.
Actually makes quite a nice little e-book viewer!

the average user, a very common

I saw on an Italian forum (androidworld.it) a thread really fun and special.
practically everyone was telling a story divertende spent with a few friends.
this is an example: long ago a friend of mine bought a galaxy ace, did nothing but talk about how it was "powerful" and fast. Once I asked him why he had not bought a galaxy if he said "That ca * ata? do not even have the processor!" a few months after they stole him and took a replacement for galaxy w. One day he told me he did not like, which was slow etc.etc. then, seeing my old modded Vodafone Smart, asked me how I did and so I talked to him a little bit of root, overclock, and more. Two days later comes back with 'I'm w galaxy where he had installed go launcher and a theme to nokia, the beautiful thing is that then I said, "I have labored hours to change the operating system, I put one of my old nokia. While doing transfer system I almost risked twice to break it ... "At that moment I did not know whether to laugh in his face or jump out the nearest window.
Another time a friend of mine came up to me all happy and told me "I bought the smartphone, the new advertising there." However I wanted to spare me tell you that there is no difference between a smartphone and a lg tribe
Oh, and in any case I think the best average users are over 45 and parents (trollface96);

Ahahahah epic
today i had a stupid moment of myself. i received a HTC M8x(asian variant) to root it for a friend. I did everything and proceeded to flash a custom kernel. when it finished the screen went black. holding power button did nothing and connecting to charger didnt budge it. for 30mins i was panicking and trying to revive it. so i tried turning it on after 30mins so i pressed the power button to see id it does anything.... and it turned on and it was still in recovery. the lock feature from TWRP made a fool of me, thinking that i bricked it lol.

A couple weeks ago I was fixing a cracked screen on my friends phone. I had to drive quite far to get the part and when I had just replaced the screen and started replacing all the other components (the screen is under everything), I managed to pinch a ribbon cable and rip it off. This was only a few hours before I wanted to surprise him with the fixed phone. I ended up going in rush hour traffic to a closer more expensive shop to get another replacement and fixing the phone with only a few minutes before I had to go meet my friend. Overall he was happy I fixed it but I don't think he'll ever know how much trouble it was to do.
