Ive had an alert twice now in the 2 months if having my nexus saying "message memory full" when I receive a sms. I cant retrieve the message even after I delete every one of my threads. The first time this happened, I got an sms that couldn't come through resulting in catastrophe the next day because I didn't get to read it.
The thing is, when it happened about 10 minutes ago, i only had about 5 threads with 6 or 7 messages in each. I would deliberately delete everything regularly to stop the memory full message coming up. But i got it did just then, and the sms hasn't come through.
Surely the limit on this thing isnt 100 messages or so?
If it matters, im also getting a "Phone storage space getting low" alert in the notification bar, but according to settings ive got about 18 mb left and 500 mb left on the sd card.
Im stumped...any way to retrieve my message in the meantime?
Make sure you don't have any text messages saved on the SD card.
i think it might be sim card messages that are full. go into setting on the sms app and manage sim card messages
Sorry to bring back an old thread, but I'm having the same issue right now. I have no messages stored on my sim card and 10 messages in my inbox. My phone still says my text message memory is full.
How was this issue resolved the first time?
Thanks

It is your memory on the phone that is full, not specifically text message memory. You are probably down to 20mb or 10mb left of storage. Remove an app or clear your browser cache to free up some room. If you use Pandora, it could have ballooned to a huge size.
Wow, that did it. I gotta keep my browsers in check next time. Sorry I didn't think of that. Thanks for your help.
anyone know of a way to retrieve the text that couldn't get through?

Ok, so i had 1300+ text messages between me and my girlfriend this week and i went to delete them because I could tell my sms was getting a little sluggish, but I could not delete them. It kept force closing on me. I tried rebooting the device and still would force close. I figured I would just "wait" this time and not close and I waited ten or so times and then rebooted again. after the reboot the messages were gone. I was just wondering if anyone else has encountered this problem and if maybe there was a way or a program that could auto delete the messages.
ive experienced the same issue while trying to delete a large amount of sms. ive also had issues with it displaying mms. The only solution ive found is to not let my messaging to fill up.
When it trys to force close just keep hiting wait or whatever doesn't close it.....it takes a while but eventually it deletes
yeah it doesn't show the number of messages in a thread with chomp so over the last week i racked up almost 2000 and it took 10minutes or so to delete them all. i closed every other program with task manager and just kept hitting wait.
Yea I just click "Delete Threads" and forget about it. When I come back there's a fore close I click wait and all the texts are gone. "SET IT, AND FORGET IT"
Never let it get over 100 per thread
I noticed if you do that is when you have issues
right now i find it easier to wipe my phone than to try and delete threads of messages, i use more than 15,000 sms messages a month and i just wipe my phone once a month, and run a script on my computer and all my apps are back and on the SD card still, and my messages are gone. i haven't done this in two months and my messeges are getting quite slow. thanks for reminding me to wipe

ok i got 3 words for u. U ARE INSANE !
lol i delete my sms when it get more than 500 or close. and when i did, it tel me to force close or wait, i just force close, and come back, everything is gone
do i smell a sms deleting app necessity?
why am i insane, most of my txts are between me and my girl, i can run a script on my comp and it wipes my phone and reinstalls my apps. right before i go to bed i open the teminal on my comp and run wipe, i wrote a script to wipe, reboot, reinstall apps, it makes my life really easy, when i wake up in the morning i have a fresh phone with all the extra texts and cra gone, plus it saves me from having to delete individual threads like you guys are doing.
@@roguestatuskat if you were to make an app that deleted all my SMS messages at once i would certainly use that, i might not pay for it since my way is pretty mush painless and free, but it would save my cache from my other stuff rather than losing all that once a month
you do relize there is a delete all threads menu option right?
Yea I jus recently had this problem about a week ago I had 1200+ messages from one person and 700+ from another, I jus had to take a L and "wait" instead of hitting F/C, cuz like someone else said chomp doesn't show how many messages u have in a thread... But yea I do think there should be an easier way to delete those messages like that...

15000 SMS month is insane because this means you are averaging a message every 2 minutes every waking hour of your day (30 day month, 8 hours sleep) Assuming it takes you 15 seconds to open SMS and read or type your message you are spending 1/8th of your entire waking life typing or reading texts. That is insane... or at least very impressive in quantity. Especially when you consider that you spend at least some time with your girlfriend and when you are together I assume you are not texting each other. Take in meals and showers and the time becomes even more constrictive.
Whatever makes you happy though.
It's unfortunate because on the Iphone you practically never have to delete sms messages. And even when you do decide to delete months worth of text messages, it takes no more than a second.
There should definitely be a quicker way to delete messages. I honestly can't even believe they shipped a phone that would force close while trying to delete text messages, but what do I know.
i'd really just like to know what folder the messages are saved in so i could try and delete them in terminal and see if that goes any quicker.
wow this is happening to me now.
anyoone know how to delete them faster?
Yea im having the same problem too any suggestions???
I have been thinking on this problem a bit and have a suggestion of sorts. An app could be made to access the SMS provider and delete conversation threads. You do not have to build a whole sms application, just enough to display sms conversations and spawn a background thread to handle the delete. Sms is almost definitely stored in a SQLite database. The problem you are experiencing is due to the fact that the developers did not take into account users with a large number of SMS messages so did not put the delete call in a separate thread. Really it is less efficient in most cases but not when the table gets so large that performance becomes an issue.
The main hurdle I can see in the short time I spent investigating is that the SMS content provider does not appear to be documented. Get a handle to that though and the rest is not too bad. Since there are third party sms apps that share the same content provider there must be some listing of it.
(Typed on my G1 so please forgive typos...)
Deleting 1,000+ threads dont seem to be a problem now and has anyone tried deleting on 1.5?
Hi,
I have a problem with my X1. I can't recive any message (SMS/MMS). I hera the ring and then I see: "There is not enough free space to download message. Please free up some space".
Still I can recive new emails. I have free space, cause i've deleted all my message.
Thanks for any help you might provide.
Same problem
I've got the same problem: I cannot receive any new message! I deleted all my sms but still the same error message shows up.
I don't know what to do, but I need my phone to work ... does anyone have any suggestion?
Thanks a lot
under the inbox go to "Delected Items" and delete them from there! and delete drafts and stuff too - when on sms window click inbox on top left
And make sure that there is generally some space left in your device memory. Because everything (and therefore messages too) is stored in device memory. If you have filled your Xperia's memory with programs etc. there wont be anything left where your devices might store any messages
It began when I received a MMS...this was a second attempt MMS because the first one wouldnt download so I told him to resend it...the second one didnt work either but ever since the second one it says I have one unread text...I tried deleting both of those MMSs and nothing...then I did the s/w update that was just released and still nothing...now Ive deleted all my messages and its still there!?! Its not a big deal but its getting a little annoying...any ideas?

Try emptying the "deleted" folder?
Haha...I did but nothing...thanks tho!
Some softresets or just turning off the phone and turning it on again?
Should solve those kinds of mistakes...
I assume it's the same problem as with my X1i I had once. The message box is showing an unread message, but in fact all messages have been signed as "read" or it looks like there is a hidden message you can't mark as "read".
In order to get rid of this I used a tool provided here on the forum which removes that issue so use it and please give feedback if it worked out:

good luck mate !
its not a bug. it says unread text because youve not recieved your mms yet. i had the same thing. its still waiting for you to receive and read it, until you download and recieve the mms you will still have the alert. have you checked your mms settings? make sure your account is set up properly. the first mms i get on a phone is always a pain, but after that they should all work fine. i had to manually click on the notification and download it. it came through in the end.

Thanks...but after I installed it nothing happened...am I suppose to do something after its installed or does it just fix it?
Actually after doing some searching I am guessing that the program just adds the option of marking all as read and ive done that with no luck...plus ive deleted the whole inbox and still nothing...

I believe it is a bug because I received a mms correctly the day before...which was my first one... and I also manually clicked on the notification...I waited almost two days for it to come in before deleting my whole inbox...so I guess Im just stuck with my phone thinking Ive got 1 unread damn message...ugh

you originally said that the first mms wouldnt download and he sent another one. until you download and read all the pending mms then it will continue to say unread. clearing your inbox wont make much difference since the message isnt on your phone its stuck somewhere out there on the network and your phone knows it lol. but i think they expire after 14 days or so. you might be able to reduce the expire time in the mms settings menu.
Oh, sorry I meant I got the very first MMS correctly...the second ATTEMPT on the second MMS is when the one unread message began to stick...but yea it will probably go away soon...should I change the validity period to 1 day? Or 1 week?
try it at as short as possible. hopefully that will clear it. if not, then you can try a program like "pim backup" to backup all your messages and contacts then completely clear all your accounts on your phone. you can then just do a restore to put all your messages and contacts back afterwards...
My Inbox [SMS account only, ActiveSync/mails are empty] has 34340 messages. My sent has about 29080. Inlcuding all subfolders and their messages, the total is about 69550 approx.
It seems this is the maximum my inbox can handle. I cannot "reply" or "forward" texts or create any new. the options simply do not work until I delete a text or two - which is what i hv been doing for now.
My phone seems to have SUFFICIENT MEMORY currently for a lot more texts. From the memory tab: Storage: 26.64mb free. Program : 15.32mb free.
The phone runs Windows Mobile 2003 SE. i-mate Pocket PC.
Is there a way to allocate more to inbox? IS THERE ANY WAY TO GET IN MORE MESSAGES ?
IMPORTANT: I AM NOT WILLING TO DELETE ANY TEXT AT ALL. DO NOT SUGGEST THAT OPTION
*help*
It sounds like you've hit the maximum file limit within a folder, considering you've reached over 65000 files, that sounds akin to 16bit limitations. The only real option I can see is if you back up your text messages to another storage medium and clear the memory away.
I know you've said that you don't want to delete anything but that's the only solution I can see. I suppose you can use PIM backup and store the texts in a binary file on a memory card etc but it would mean that you cant view them readily.
That's all I can suggest, hope something works. (I cant say I'm right though, I could be talking out of my arse here, I'm just going by a gut feeling).
Out of curiosity though, how have you managed to rack up a total of 65000 messages? That sounds insane!
I googled a bit, and i've figured i can fit in more messages if I change the storage location from "Windows\Messaging" to anything on my SD Card.
There is a registry key which needs to be edited for this. But So far i haven't been able to find it on the internet, or by myself.
Any help with that will be greatly appreciated.
and 65000? Lol. I do an average of 800-950 texts a day
I apologize if this has been asked/resolved before, but I searched the forums and google quite a bit to no avail. I have found other instances of people with this issue but have not found a resolution yet.
Every time I receive a single text message, I get a notification on the unlock screen that says I have 2 texts. When I unlock the phone and pull down the notification area, it lists the 2 texts. One of the texts is the actual text i just received and I can access it just fine. The other text listed is a text from weeks ago that has long been deleted, including the entire thread it was in. This ghost text will not go away.
I can clear the notifications and it goes away, but as soon as I receive another text from anyone, it pops up there again. I have tried some other solutions that popped up on google. These were to download the SMS Cleaner app and search by keyword. Upon doing this, the app does not find any texts with the keywords from the ghost text.
I have also tried replying to the text to create a new thread and maybe try to delete it again, but even when the new thread is created/deleted the ghost text comes back.
I also turned off/on text notifications several times also combined with power cycling the phone, which did not solve this either.
Note: This text was from a room alert system in our server room at work. It sends email alerts that we then have converted to text message and sent to our phones.
Not sure if it being an email has anything to do with it, but I have received these alerts several times before without any of them getting stuck.
My phone is still on 2.1 and was rooted using Unleash the Beast.
Anyone have the same problem, or any ideas? Is there a folder that holds texts somewhere in the root file system that I can clean out?
Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to give as much detail about the problem as possible, this has been annoying me for weeks.
Try deleting the email alert? Just spitballing...
This happened to me last night!
I keep getting the same Ghost Txt message
The only way i can think to get rid of it would be a Data Reset.
But i dont wanna erase my whole phone cuz of a software issue that may happen again!
Have u fixed it?
No, still no luck on this. Anyone have any ideas?
I had a problem similar to this with the dumb phone that i had before my Captivate. I called AT&T customer support because I didn't want to reset my phone and they got it resolved. Apparently there was a message stuck in their server marked as unread, but since it had been read on my phone it said 0 new messages. This might work for you, too?
Solved
Open the spot where notifications are read the phone number and send a text to it, it will open the message thread and you can delete it there
