My N1 will not reconnect to a mobile network if it has been sitting for a few hours in a no-coverage area, such as a building. I cannot get it to reconnect, even after refreshing the network search. This action only leaves me with no result or a message saying that there was an error in searching or connecting to mobile networks. The only solution is to restart the phone. Every time I try to turn the phone off after this error has occurred, the shutdown sequence hangs until either I become frustrated and do a battery pull, or it automatically restarts and do a battery pull, or it automatically restarts itself. Furthermore, the phone used to give me an error notification saying that the phone does not have carrier service. Now, it does not. Furthermore, the phone used to give me an error notification saying that the phone does not.
I tried uninstalling all my programs and nothing has worked for me. I've also tried toggling the airplane mode to no avail.
I'm considering putting on the cyanogen ROM to see if it would fix this error, but I am hesitant to void my warranty. It's a pretty serious problem as I'm very frequently in a building where I don't get service. It's quite frustrating to have to wait to reconnect to a mobile network once I leave the building and hope that the error didn't occur or have to do a battery pull every time I realize that the phone simply won't reconnect.
Can anyone suggest any solutions?
Mod it. What have you got to lose? Your overall performance will increase. The radio signal may even improve. Your call.

thanks for the tip. i've been thinking about it. it's the warranty i don't want to lose. eh i'll keep thinking about it.
this phone sucks. it's glitchy, can be sluggish. iphone got dumbed down but at least its functions work.
meh
Hey!
You dont want to lose your warranty, then use it!
Your phone seems to be faulty...
My phone is experiencing the same problem as of yesterday. Won't connect. Wonder if it's a T-Mobile issue.

Its only glitchy coz you have stock rom
Cyanogen is really stable and adds alot of features / functionality.
Fair enough you dont want to lose warranty but i remember in the general thread that lots of hardware failures and others can still fix your n1 under warranty even though they unlocked the bootloader.
I too have this problem, hopefully the 2.2 update will fix the problems.
Can you guys confirm if its android or your service provider thats causing this...

I have the same problem and it's starting to bother me a lot because my car is parked in a garage with no coverage. My in-car BT then becomes useless as my phone won't reconnect to the network once I exit the garage
I just called Google support 10 mins ago about this and they went through normal protocol to reset to factory settings. They then called Tmo and let them know what the issue was while I was still on the phone. Tmo unregistered my phone from the network while my battery was taken out of my phone and then reregistered my phone to the network. Tmo asked me to monitor this for a few days and call them directly (not Google) if the issue persists. They will then elevate this to a higher level because they feel this would be a network problem, and not a hardware issue.
Hope this helps! Please post what you have tried to solve the problem!

^ it worked! my phone reconnects to the cellular network after what Google/Tmo did for me on the phone!
I haven't tried calling tmobile, but it is NOT something that will be fixed by hopping on cyanogen's rom. I've been rooted on cyanogen's rom for quite some time and this problem still exists on my n1 which is SUPER annoying. I will try calling tmobile to see if they can fix it on their side, but rooting is not the fix here.
I had the same issue. I used anycut and phone info shortcut and changed the wireless default setting to us and it totally fixed the problem. Have not had that issue again.

I resolved this by going to the T-Mobile store where they replaced my SIM card. They made a copy to a new SIM card, installed it and everything works fine.
For the record symptoms included:
* "Error while searching for network" message
* Found networks but said "your SIM card is not authorized for this network" when connecting
* Network listed as "No service" or "Emergency calls only | T-Mobile"
I get this too with an at&t phone.
Have asked for a replacement device from HTC (since the reception is crappy to begin with).
I also have audio quality problems when reception is only 1-2 bars.
Will see if the new phone is better.
I had this problem regularly. It hasn't happened once since I upgraded to Froyo, so I think it has been fixed in that release.
sometimes have this too, i fix it by going to the settings > wireless > mobile networks > APN. at first i deleted and retyped my password in the selected APN, now i just click my network in the APN settings, don't change anything and leave. It immediately reconnects after that.
edit: and i have stock froyo & live in belgium.
I got a new, replacement phone from HTC today.
This new phone has a BIG PROBLEM with this issue.
Even if I am only without reception for a couple of seconds (go through the garage, etc.) it will not connect to any network until I reboot.
My old phone would only experience this problem maybe 25-35% of the time.
Very, very annoying!!!

I had similar issues and called tmobile support. I was first linked to Google support. They went through the similar process as described by in the first page. (#*#*4636*#*# select USA band etc). While I was on hold, they called t mobile tech support and had them reset network connection and tried to get me onto a different tower etc.
Tmobile support stated that my sim card (had for about 2 years) was the cause of the issue as they can't handle smartphones as well as their new sim cards. They also said the new sim should improve reception and connection stability (Don't see how a new sim could do this but what do I know?). Moreover, they noted my account and told me to go into the nearest store for a new sim card. Went into the nearest tmobile store told them the issue, they pulled up my account and gave me a new sim. Took less then 5 minutes and I have not had the issue with staying connected to the tmobile network.
I will update this after a few days to see if I still have the issue.
I have the same problems that i cannot connect to network here in germany. first i think it was my sim card, but befor i had another provider (E-Plus) where i had the same problems with reconnecting to network. and one day my eplus sim card is broken so i had to buy a new one by t-mobile. i have tried a lot of roms from here (cyanogen/ 5.0.7 /5.0.8T5 Kangorama rodriquezstyle and leofroyo) everyone seems to have the same problems with reconnecting to network. i hope im not alone with my problems and someone can help.
hmm...
Count me as another. I just upgraded to froyo and it went beserk. Had no service for a while. It would only come on after constantly tapping "select network automatically" until it kicked me out of the menu. It started getting better but kept kicking me out of 3g. I set it to stay always on 3g and it seems to be better... still I'm going to call tmobile and see if I can get a new sim as well.
Thanks for the info guys!

Sometimes people call me and get a message saying my phone is off or out of service. But when I look at it, it often shows 4 bars of service..
When I call someone, the problem disappears temporarily, and I start receiving calls again (and I receive all the SMS's I was supposed to get at once), only to appear again later for no reason (a soft reset also solves it). It's not related to location, it also happens when I spend the day at home (where I get a strong signal).
I don't think it's a operator problem either, since my operator is known for it's good services, and other people who use "normal" phones never had such a problem.
I tried 3 different ROMs (dutty's hybrid, Hyperdragon and AthineOS) and 3 different radios (dutty's radio (1.65 something), hyperdragon's (1.70 something), and eMo radio). Right now I'm using AthineOS with hyperdragon III's radio, and almost no programs installed..
This problem happens both in 3G and EDGE mode.
Anything I can do about it?
Send it in for repair?
Seems you tried all you could...
Don't think I can send it for repair, since it's an AT&T Tilt and I'm not even in the US..
Guess I'm outta luck then
Anyone else have any ideas?
have you tried the sim in another handset, sounds like a network problem to me.
3G Network
Are you using 3G Network?
Sometime I use 3G band and even It show good signal I loose phone calls.
I changed to GSM and no phone calls loose.
This happens in São Paulo/Brazil but...
EDIT: Sorry. Now I saw that you reported this problem also using GSM band.
Thanks.
I am not sure if you're using your US SIM card in a foreign country?
Maybe you just forgot to enable INTERNATIONAL ROAMING before you left ... ?
I'm having the same problem
I seem to have started with the same problem about a week ago. A couple people complained that they called me but it rang twice and went to voicemail - My phone never rang. However, after I made a call (or apparently did something to "wakeup" the phone), I would get the voicemail notification (2 hours later).
I tried reseating the SIM card, but then it went to "SIM Card Missing". I did a hard reset, but that didn't help. I took it back to AT&T and they replaced the SIM Card. That seemed to work again, and certainly would have been a convenient fix (bad SIM card - too easy). So I've just spent all weekend reloading all the apps, but now it's happening again!!
The symptoms are; After I reboot the device, I can receive one or two calls, then it doesn't ring anymore (the caller hears 2 rings then it goes to voicemail). If I cycle the Phone radio button in the Comm Manager, or cycle power, it comes back to life for 1 call, then craps out again.
I'm just using the standard AT&T ROM (without the Bloatware after this past reset) and the standard/default radio version 1.27.12.11
The only thing that I have noticed that seems different lately is that the "Comm Manager" task is always running when I look at the running programs (which I don't think it used to) I had also recently installed Garmin XT.
The device is of course 1 yr + 2 weeks (so I assume just out of warranty)
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
Hmmm,
what I would try, is, to just make a hard reset, load only my contacts to the phone and run it for a while to monitor its "Incalling" behavior. If everything seems to be fine, I would go ahead and start installing an application, then monitor my device again for a while, if everything is fine I will go ahead install the next application ... and so on. That is just to make sure that no 3rd party application causes this problems.
BTW:
I don't think that GARMIN causes this problem. I used to run Garmin on my HTC too (v5.0) until I came accross SYGIC McGuider (which works much better and card scrolling is much smoother than Garmin).
Well,
to come back to the point: if you get the same problems without loading any 3rd party application on your device, then I would recommend trying another ROM (best advice: go with the HTC stock ROM). If it also happens with the other ROM then it might be hardware related and difficult to fix.
Thanks - I knew that's what I should do, I just didn't want to do it after having spent all weekend reloading and configuring it. I thought I had read somewhere about Garmin having to have the phone radio on to work, so I was hoping there was a setting somewhere that I was missing that was powering the radio down. But..... I suppose it's time to go back to common sense and just do the reset
So far it seems to be working now. I'll give it a few days with just the basics and then start reloading one at a time.
Thanks for the quick response!
Spoke too soon
looks like I spoke too soon, it's doing it again - seems like it was fine for about 3 hours, but now .....
guess it's time to try my luck with AT&T - time to see how good their customer service is

Well, I'm experiencig totally same stuff here. I don't know whats really going on. I've NEVER before had such or even simialr problem.
Ive installed stock HTC ROM. And its going again.
One question. Are you using Opera Mini maybe?

no, I was just using the default browser.
I've got nothing installed on it at this point so I'm guessing it's hardware related.
Over the last couple months I had been experiencing some strange battery drainage (not related to the GPS issues). I don't know if that was a symptom or not. It just seems like the radio is going to sleep somehow - it wakes up for a little while if I sync my email, cycle the radio via comm manager, or cycle the power.
Anyone know if there is a setting somewhere that controls that? (sure would be nice if it were that simple)
The AT&T store was basically useless, all they did was give me the phone number for the warranty department (but since I'm 2 weeks past warranty, he doesn't think they'll help me), and of course offer to upgrade me to the Fuze for $375 - no thanks!
I've had the same issue (I think). I too think that it seems to happen when I have a 3G data connection active and moving back to GPRS (non 3G) seems to make it better....
I'm on a standard UK ROM and using BTMobile as a provider.
I was driving down the motorway the other day and overtook a friend. He rang me and went straight to voicemail. I then got a text to say that I had a voicemail and rang him back.
I was running TomTom Traffic at the time so would have had a data session enabled....
I think its something to do with the data session sometimes not letting a call through but can't put my finger on anything and certainly can't find an option to change any settings...
Also, even at home, I'm constantly picking up my phone to see that it "has no signal" and the exclamation mark is displayed - so calls aren't coming through - but it then connects and shows a three-bar strength signal. Don't understand why it keeps dropping out, but I get a 3G connection at the front of my house and an ordinary G connection at the back and I think that it sometimes to stay connected to the 3G connection for data even when the phone signal is very poor and it would be better dropping that and connecting at "old" GPRS speed...
Same on the train on the west coast main line out of London. I think having the 3G turned on causes the phone signal to drop out completely more than when 3G is turned off, as the phone tries to hang on to the signal of a 3G cell and doesn't successfully switch over to the next "non 3G" cell whilst in a call.
have you tried a new radio such as NIKI's?
well, AT&T warranty was even less than useless. Home phone, Internet, and Wireless all through AT&T and the best they can do is "see if they could get me a deal on a new phone" or refer me to HTC technical support. Nice customer service AT&T!!!
HTC technical support was actually trying to be helpful, once she found out I already did a hard reset, she referred me to their warranty group. They looked up the S/N and it's still under their warranty (I guess theirs is 15 months after manufacture date). Now the only problem is I have to send it in to them to see if it's covered under warranty, and of course be willing to go without my phone for 2 weeks (and pay them a yet to be determined amount if they decide it's not under warranty).
I'd like to try a different radio, but looks like there's too much for me to read up on - I need to get the device fixed, I've already lost too much time with it being messed up and me screwing with it.
Update
so this morning I was ready to throw in the towel and send the device back to HTC. At least they were willing to help me out, unlike AT&T.
I get to work, and of course the phone seems to be working (which isn't unusual, it works for a little while then craps out). Come lunch time, it's still working (now this is unusual, it must be a fluke, I'll give a couple more hours before I package it up). 4:00 and it's still working! Now I'm starting to wonder if it's got to do with the cell towers near my house (and the AT&T store since it did it for them too).
I email my buddy who lives about 1/2 mile away and also has a Tilt just to see if he's had any similar problems. He calls me back laughing. There's 5 People in his office with the exact same problem (and not all Tilts either).
So to make a short story long....... it appears to be a problem with AT&T, NOT the device (but Thank You very much AT&T for the incredible customer care you demonstrated and for trying to screw me into buying new devices for outrageous prices)
So at this point, I'm not sure if it's that AT&T has fixed the issue across the board, or if it was the "Resync the routing" that the online chat person tried last night that finally propagated across the network (I assume so that AT&T can find my phone in order to route the calls to me).
I guess we'll see if it does the same thing when I get back closer to home tonight, but I'm relieved that it appears to be fixed.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions! Now I have a little more time to read about how I can screw up my phone on my own schedule - all the practice of resetting it and reinstalling everything, and seeing how much faster it is has inspired me

I didn't tried asking AT&T for a new sim card. but I will call them to change the sim card. Does anybody know how to disable the 3G function?
Just a "me too..."
Hello everyone. I just wanted to report that I'm having the same issues...they started about a week or so ago.
I've had my AT&T Tilt for about 8 months now (it's a warranty replacement for my first tilt, bought in July...so of course, I'm out of warranty). I recently had problems receiving calls, and then I started being unable to make calls, even though my phone shows a decent signal...anywhere from 4 bars to 2 bars. When dialing, it'll say "Dialing..." for a few seconds...and then it clicks off. A soft reset will fix things temporarily, but that's it.
I'm running the stock AT&T ROM (I'll check the version number if someone thinks it'll help), and I've tried doing a hard reset AND replacing the SIM card. Same effect.
Someone please let me know if they resolved this problem. AT&T offered me an HTC Fuze...but I'm extremely wary of other phones by this manufacturer. I'm very, VERY tired of phones crapping out on me after having just spend a couple of hundred bucks on them. At this point, I'm just looking for something reliable. If someone else here has had problems with the Fuze, please let me know...not to start any fights around here, but I'm actually thinking about going with the iPhone.
Thanks.
Hi!
After weeks of flawless function my Xperia can not find my carriers phone network.
I have updated the phone to the new ROM but that does not help.
The phone finds the SIM card and asks for the code.
Strangly it can connect to internet through my carrier (Tele2).
But I can not get a connection to the phone network and make a normal phone call.
Is something wrong with the phone?
NO, cause with another carrier (Telenor) everything works pefect.
Then obviously something is wrong with my carrier (Tele2) or the SIM-card.
NO, cause when I put my Tele2 SIM-card in another device (Ipaq 6515) it works perfect.
The Ipaq is not a 3G-phone. Can that have anything to do with it?
I'm getting lost here, all help is appreciated.
(ORIGINAL MESSAGE
Hi!
After weeks of flawless function my Xperia has started to lose it's phone network.
I notice it after I wake my phone up from stand by mode.
It doesn't help to turn the phone option off and on in Comm manager, but it has sometimes helped turning flight mode on and off.
Other times I had to restart the phone.
This happens a couple of times every day, after long times of not using the phone. I have not been able to trigger this problem, so I don't know what causes it or exactly when it happens.
Strangly it can connect to HDSPA while it has lost the phone network.
I have also experienced som freezes when I'm flipping between the panels to much.
All help is appreciated, thanks.
It would be helpful if you could give us more information.
What ROM are you using
Which carrier you have
etc.

I'm using:
ROM 1.02.936.3
Radioversion 1.06.25.29
The carrier is Swedish Tele2.
In Sweden we have GSM-900 and GSM-1800.
Tele2 also provide me with UMTS and HSDPA.
Today the problem became worse.
Even after repeated soft restarts it refused to find the phone network.
Then I change SIM-card to another carrier and it found the network.
I also tried the SIM-card that's giving me problems in another device. Works fine.
So both SIM-cards works. I'm now gonna go with the new carrier during the day to see if the problem come back.
If anyone have any ideas, please help.

All I can say that Xperia sometimes looks for the signal a bit longer it should IMO,
but I also know that carriers have many many problems usually and they're also often responsible for signal drops in some places too.
I know that 'cos I was talking to my carrier many times about it and learned something about it...
have u tried hard resetting the phone or re-installing the software? ..
if u run the sony update software it will give u the option to re-install your phones software - not sure if that has the same effect as a hard reset ..
probably worth trying

Chance that you have very poor 3G on your phone, whilst the IPAC is picking up ok 2G.

Thanks for replying.
I disabled HSDPA/HSUPA in the advanced network menu. But it didn't help.
I also tried to choose GSM only in the phone seetings menue. But I could not even change the setting. Just got an error message about not being able to change the network (or something similar).
Is there any other setting that might be worth trying?

Having worked for several phone companies a few years at customer service I know what the procedure is.
-First thing they do is ask you to do a "crosstest", try your SIM in another phone and see if that works.
-You'll tell them that you did that and everything works fine when you use another phone.
-They'll automatically conclude that there's something wrong with your phone (correctly)
-They'll ask you if you could do a hard reset ( You did that too)
-Then maybe they'll try and reset the network (which almost never works)
Basically they'll have no other choice then for you to return it and have them look at the problem / replace your phone.
I don't think we here can help you with your problem
Good luck and keep us posted
Get a new SIM card. I've seen problems like this before, and an updated SIM card solved it.
The best way would be to test your SIM card in a similar phone, the ipaq not being close because it's not even 3G.

I'm so confused right now.
Got my new sim card today, problem remains.
I call the carrier support and after they've looked the IMEI-number up they say that the phone is barred by an external operator. They won't tell me the reason and by what operator.
So I call the other carriers support and after they've done a IMEI-search they say that the phone is not locked in any way, by them or any other operator. After have been talking to Xperia support they come to the same conclusion. The phone is not locked but agree to that something is wrong, with phone or carriers, and they want me to try with a third carrier.
Final
I've handed in my phone to the seller and got another one back instead.
The end
Exact same problem
Howdy folks,
I have the exact same problem: My Xperia has worked fine for a month. Suddenly I can't register with Tele2 network (tried another Tele2 card as well that didn't work) for calling but have access to data channel so I can surf. Got told by the Tele2 support that my phone was fu**ed up. Got pissed off. Tried a sim for another provider (Telenor) that worked. Called the Tele2 support again. They noticed that I have an old (2g) sim, so they will send a new (3g) card to test if that fixes this mess. It should arrive late this week or early the next. Can't wait...
I'll keep you posted in this thread (or, if I should instead have made a new thread, a moderator may spank me and I will do better).
/Swedish Dave
Nope, new sim-card didn't fix it. But I have found at least one other xperia-user with this problem...
bad GSM signal
I have a X1

My phone does the same thing
My x1 has had no problem with phone function or network. However, from the last week, the signal began to be lost sometimes, and the machine turned off automatically. and finally today, there is no signal at all.
MY SIM card works with other phones, so, I thought it might be software problem, and hard reseted with new rom. However, still no signal. It keeps looking. Does anyone have the same problem, and hopefully, solution?
I´m using my X1i with Tele2 as my service provider, but i don´t have any problems with signalstrength.. Works just fine..

I know I should've introdouced myself first, and that this is a strange first post, but:
HOLY SMOKES!!!
Xperia has FIVE reception bars????!!!!!
I always thought that 3 is the max value, since it only happened once that it went up to three bars, rest of the time it's maximum 2, usually 1.
I am also on Tele2 carrier, in Sweden that is, and since yesterday, I have no reception AT ALL.
Nothing.
Tried turning off 3G(or whatever it's called), nothing happens.
Tested with 3 other cards (one Tele2, one Telenor, one Telia) - all seem to be working okay. Except that the Tele2 one has slightly lower reception than the others.
Tested with 3 other phones as well - iPhone 3GS, Nokia 5800 Xpress Music, HTC Desire. All of them worked perfectly. Full coverage on that super-fast network thingy(the 3G symbol on iPhone).
Internet is just flowing on other phones - but Xperia is just falling behind in the most important section - reception.
Calls get dropped (2/3 of the calls), I must send same message at least 3 times in order to get it sent, Internet is crappy - if there's any at all.
Any kind of guidance is mostly appreciated.
P.S. A bit of those numbers which seem to be important:
Microsoft Windows MobileR 6.1 Professional
CE-OS 5.2.19608 (Build 19608.1.2.60)
ROM-version: 1.05.936.9
ROM-date: 04/19/09
Radioversion: 1.14.25.55
Protocol version: 1.0.11842.32680
Since all of you seem to have problems with one and the same carrier (Tele2) why don't you simply switch to another one? I once had a problem that was very alike the one described here and after several unsuccessful attempts of the carrier to fix it I simply switched to another one and all my problems were gone.
i'm randomly getting disconnected from the internet while chatting or surfing the net. the times i get dropped may vary but i'm normally unable to even stay on even longer than 15 minutes. when i try to reconnect i can sometimes get back on or get this error:
Cannot connect for an unknown reason. To check your connection settings and change them if needed, tap Settings. If the problem continues, reset your mobile device according to your manufacturer’s documentation and try again.
i'm currently running on christian's (wm6.5) clean rom on 3.4 which i flashed on from 3.2 thinking that this may resolve the problem. i contacted my wireless provider about this issue and they basically blew me off saying that unlocked phones won't work with they network. they did try sending some information to my sim after powering my phone but no luck. i've never had this issue before up until 2-3 weeks ago and i've owned the phone for approximately 7 months. my phone has been flashed throughout the 7 months. i've tried fiddling with the network settings trying to fix this, i've deleted the settings and used my connection setup wizard thing to reestablish it, but it continues to happen. i have used my sim on an older phone and i don't get disconnected.
essentially, i have no warranty so i can't go anywhere to fix this issue. i can receive/send text messages and calls no problem and i am getting full reception and this occurs anywhere i'm located. i'm running att in the us.
if anyone has any suggestions as i'm really starting to pull my hair over this issue and don't want to search for a new phone already especially since i've paid so much for it.
bump. if anyone can please help.
I have an unrooted ATT version of the nexus one. Randomly about 1 or 2 times a day while I am texting I will get a failed to send message and no matter how many times I try it just keeps failing. It won't allow me to send texts to anyone else either. however I continue to receive texts which is kinda odd.... the worst part is that always while this is happening I cannot make or receive phone calls this is very frustrating since I could be missing phone calls and wouldn't know it until I try and send an SMS or make a call. I have tried a lot of different things such as setting my bands to USA and setting my network preference to WCDMA Only but to no avail... I also tried a factory reset... also if I try and toggle airplane mode or turn off the radio it just crashes and I need to reboot.. if i try checking the SMSC while this is occurring but hitting the refresh button
I get refresh error and if I try and update it with the correct number I get update error... I really love my N1 and would really appreciate anyone who could shed some light on this issue
Re: My Nexus One won't send text messages or make phone calls unless I reboot
Could this be an AT&T network issue? I had similar symptoms with my HTC Hero (admittedly running EDGE) in certain parts of San Francisco earlier this year. It seemed to be the result of network congestion. Does this occur in a city or other urban area?

I am actually not on AT&T I am on Rogers network in Canada. I am living in Toronto so the 3G coverage is really good and I`ve never had this kind of issue with my previous phone which was a BB9000 and none of my friends seem to have any of these problems
I also found ppl on some other nexus one forums describing the exact same problem which leads me to believe its not a network issue but I am still not 100% sure I tried calling Rogers and had them do a cancel location and it didn`t fix the issue either
I had this issue only this morning and I'm in the UK, I put the phone into Airplane mode and back again and then everything is fine.
I have this issue about once a day.
Running the newest Cyanogen with no other modifications. Radio is the most updated one available.
Flipping to Airplane mode and backed worked on my G1 if I had an issue similar to this but the Nexus doesn't respond to it.
I reboot atleast once a day to fix this. -- Not sure if it's the radio or Cyanogen.
Anyone else have some input?
EDIT: Should have included, I am on T-Mobile
This actually happened with me today, a text kept failed and didn't get pushed through until I reset the phone. I'm hoping this doesn't turn into a daily thing
next time this happens if it happens again could u guys try and make a phone call before resetting so we can see if our problems are identical?
Thanks
This sounds like a problem I have had for several months now on T-Mobile (I just bumped the thread under the "General" topic to see if there were any developments, as I've been away from the board for six weeks or so). The symptoms I have are that the signal strength icon in the status bar shows zero bars with an "x" and the home screen says "No service." When I attempt to power off, after a while the spinning arrow stops spinning, the trackball flashes once, and then the phone reboots (takes about 45 seconds to a minute after I initiate the power-down before the reboot starts).

I am unable to make phone calls, send texts, etc. until I reset. It has no impact on Wifi but kills the cell network completely.

I also have a long delay after hitting restart when I get this issue. Maybe Ill try to get a logcat and see what it gets stuck on..
I'm getting RMA'ed, again, for the same issue plus not being able to register on the network after I get the x with four blank bars. I get either "error searching for networks" or "sim is invalid on this network". It's since fixed itself... somehow but i was without any phone service despite trying everything (calling tmobile for network outages, hard reset, reseating the sim card, other stuff) for about 3-4 hours twice now... and a few shorter time periods (1-3 minutes of those errors) before that.
Possible solutions.. which I've only done after it started working again but didn't cause anything bad to happen. So far have been without any of the previous issues, plus my original long standing issue of not being able to send texts, get any sort of data, or call (I call it the up arrow without a down arrow problem where the phone is trying to connect but doesn't receive anything back). These solutions were originally posted here:

http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/android/thread?tid=47dc569ca9667ba7&hl=en
They're also solutions I've come up with for my issue as well and seemed to have worked for a couple of others.
It's as follows:
*#*#4636#*#* and selecting phone information. Press the menu button and select the proper band. I'm guessing if you're in canada on rogers which uses the same band as AT&T US you'd select USA band. Anyway after selecting it should re register on the network.. close out of there. Turn off and turn on the phone and see how that goes. For people in other regions I have no idea what to properly select but it was posted on one of the threads on the google forums that it should be "automatic". Check with your provider and/or google tech support.
Another thing I've seen is again in the *#*#4636#*#* menu under phone information put in (THIS NUMBER IS ONLY VALID FOR TMOBILE USA) under SMSC 12063130004 and press update. Call your provider for your number. Restart the phone.
Less likely solutions (in order of descending likeliness to help you in your particular case):
Hard reset and/or verify the APN settings for your carrier. I've been told non factory default APN values for tmobile over the phone (google support) so I don't know if verifying them or asking for them will help or cause more issues but sometimes there's apps the mess with the APN values which could cause some of your issues. So while this has a high potential to help, it's easy to screw up. Hard resetting the phone will give you factory default values (I'm 99% certain but from what I remember). Changing them from non factory default isn't a terrible thing however call your provider rather than google tech support for the values.
Calling up and asking to add/verify the IMEI number to the network (i never did this until recently although it didn't fix my issue right when they added it anyway) and/or doing a network cancellation might help. Unlikely but if you' RMA'ed once they'll have the wrong one on file and could cause issues depending on the network.
Replacing the SIM card. Takes literally 30 seconds. They ask for account info at the store, they scan the new one.. and give it to you. You pop it in and go. If you have an older SIM card this DEFINITELY could be the issue. Its unlikely its defective but it's always worth ruling that out.
Let me know if any of these help.

I`ve tried all the solutions u`ve mentioned except for swapping to a new SIM card... I guess it might just be my next step but I have my doubts
I get this kind of issue occasionally, under these specific conditions only:
1. I'm at work.
2. I bring my phone with me into an area with no signal (screen says no signal, and I have 4 blank bars with an X) for more than a couple of minutes (for me, it's the room with the coffee machine - which I use a lot - no provider gets signal there on any phone).
3. It doesn't always happen, just sometimes, but when I go back to my desk, it won't reconnect.
4. Going into and out of airplane mode fixes it every time. However, with the latest CM and Ivan's Diet kernels, going into and out of airplane mode causes an immediate reboot when I try to come out of it, and only when I'm NOT connected by USB and when I AM coming from "dead" service, making logging the problem, well, problematic. Using other kernels (even OC'd kernels) does not seem to cause this airplane mode problem.
Only had this happen once trying to send a plain old SMS. I restarted the phone and no problem. I didn't think of trying to make cell calls, but if it happens again, I'll try that.
I too have had this issue with SMS. My browser works though when the SMS problem occurs. Haven't tried a phone call. I am on T-Mobile USA.
Are any of you using task-killers that may somehow be interrupting an important background service?
I have the same exact thing happen and I am on T-mobile US. I was hoping that I wasn't the only one but it seems to happen on all of my phones so I have just chalked it up to network congestion. Unless someone has an actual answer.

Have any of you edited your build.prop yet?
This helps with the switch from Edge -> 3G -> H.
I wonder if it would fix this issue.
I don't have the issue so I am unable to test myself.
This link may help. Its at least something to try.

I am using Advanced Task Killer Free, but I'm pretty sure I added important background services to the ignore list so they shouldn't be killed.
Just to double check, what background tasks shouldn't be killed?
Hi gents,
So i've been rocking my HTC one a few months now. I adore the phone but i've had some issues with it since I bought it. Occasionally, the phone will drop all signal and then a few seconds later get it back. Annoying when trying to use data or google maps but for the most part harmless. However as time went on this got more frequent, and the signal loss began to last longer even in areas where I knew I had solid signal.
Now, it's terrible. My phone shows having 3g/4g signals and can access data, although it does still have the intermittent drop issues. However, for the past 2 days my phone has been unable to make or receive calls/texts, even when the phone shows it has signal. Sprint says nothing on their end is wrong and has "Refreshed" something or other and told me to reboot my phone. Problem persists and they say there's nothing they can do to fix it.
So I come to you guys. Any advice for my phone woes?
Thanks,
K.
Can they not replace it in warranty?

Have you tried updating the PRL? This is what Verizon and Sprint used to tell customers who were having problems getting service in well-covered areas.
Another thing to check is the APN. Some carriers (for example AT&T which is who I use) have several different APN's listed, maybe your device somehow switched to an APN that doesn't serve your area?
