Switching android versions... want to keep contacts... - Touch CDMA Android Development

ok so i've been using Myn's warm donut and want to switch to the sense 2.1 but dont want to lose all my contacts. any way to switch and keep contacts??

one of the biggest features of Android is that it syncs with the cloud. if your contacts are synced to your google address book, they will automatically be restored. I don't see why they wouldn't be synced, but if you would rather be safe, try logging on to google.com/contacts and make sure your contacts are there.

Facebook contacts

Just wondering if anyone has a problem with the Facebook contact pictures not loading and if anyone knows a fix. Thanks in advance.

It depends on the ROM, some AOSP built ROMs have a bug which causes problems with FB syncing. Have you made sure that syncing with existing/all contacts is selected in the FB app settings?
I am on cm6 final it was just working like the other day then I accidentally clear the data in contacts and now its gone and doesn't load back? Yes syncying is enabled.

As it got tiring to relink my gmail contacts to fb just to have their contact photos after a wipe (rom flashing addiction)...especially with some asop builds having sync problems with the fb app..i've given up using that approach. Instead, i use Syncmypix. It syncs ur fb pics to ur gmail contacts uploading the pics to gmail. Hence, the next time u download ur gmail contacts after a wipe, you pull down their pics as well
Thanks works great

A better Contacts app?

Anyone using an app for their contacts that's better than the stock Captivate app?
My problem with the app is likely due to how I use it, but it's driving me crazy. I have 3 accounts syncing their contacts to it. 90% of each account is a dupe of the other accounts, but I need to have all 3 for that 10%. If I don't, then I have to pick one and constantly take the time to manually make sure it's up to date. Instead I think the spool should just work.
My problems are so far it only lets you combine 4 contacts. I *could* go through all 3 accounts and clean them up, but again, I think the app should be more flexible and let me combine as many as I want. Also, it doesn't let me choose a group of contacts within gmail. WHY does it think I need the contact info of EVERY person I've ever communicated with?! Let me just limit which groups within the account I want synced, especially to limit it to "my contacts" within gmail.
Anyone with similar frustrations find something better?
Thanks!

the one included in the Cognition ROM is pretty awesome. i just noticed it today (i don't use that app too often). it looks the same but you can swipe left to text a contact or swipe right to call. i found this very slick!

pocket informant would be great! hope it comes out soon...
I would try dialer one. It's free and an amazing app. I'm not sure it will do what you want but there are tons of options. My favorite is the swiping to go to contacts, favorites, and call log. I started using it because I wanted my favorites to come up first thing without a dial pad when I hit the phone. Hope it helps.
all the contact apps are half done as is e mail
How can you take Android seriously without a decent contacts manger or e mail client?
I have tried them all the contact apps and they are all difficult if not impossible to use. Some do not enable all the fields you need and on others the search is incorrect. None of them mesh with or incorporate the phone & text function well. Right now I'm working with the 2.2 contacts manager, 2.2 messaging and Touchdown. It takes all three to marginally achieve what I need. This is an opportunity for someone.
I just installed the CyanogenMod e mail to try and find a decent e mail client. It is not much better then the 2.2 e mail (it does include your message when you reply), Touchdown or any of the others. Touchdown would be good if it would handle multiple accounts of each and every variety. There is another opportunity here.

If you are syncing 3 contact sources and there are some dupes, then those are linked - you can see all 3 individually, but picking the contact source you want to view, or you can unlink those 10%.
As for groups, 2.2 appears to fix this, but for now, one solution is to export all your contacts to your SD card then import them all to your "phone". The phone address book allows you to create and manage groups.
Maybe the stock Android contact manager is better. I am holding out for 2.2 as what i have seen, looks like they fixed most issues involving groups and google groups.

[Q] Help switching ROMs

My Hero has been rooted since August, for the first couple of months after I rooted it I was flashing a new ROM everyday, just to find one I really liked.
Well for the last few months I've been using ASOP 9.7 and this theme, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833504 I've tried to flash newer versions of ASOP a few times but none of them worked for me without a ton of FC's so I finally just gave up and have been happy with the theme and 9.7 but now I want to try something new, namely one of these, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731659
My question is, I want to be able to sync all my contact with my Google account and my Gmail but I DO NOT want all my apps restored, I'd like to start over fresh in the apps department. It seems like with every 2.2 ROM I've tried it automatically restores my apps but I don't want it to, how can I keep this from happening?
Your Gmail and google contacts (not phone contacts) are always synced online. Your other email (non-gmail) is not synced, unless you are using IMAP. So, once you change the ROM and login into your google account, everything's (gmail/google contacts) restored.

I'm not worried about GMail and Contacts, those restore and I want them too, I just want to know if there is a way to keep all the apps from restoring.
Go to Settings, Privacy, uncheck Back up my data.
Another option. After you flash a new rom, and you are going thru setup, on the screen where you initially sign in to google, hit menu, disable restore.

Which is the best way to back up Contacts?

After continuosly flashing my device smt I have to format so all contacs are lost,
Ususally I use the export to sd card feature to restore contacs,
I`ve tried the outlook and Kies Sync, also Google sync,
but it seems none of them is perfect, because many joined contacts and icons are lost,
Which is the best way, without using any back up Apk?
u can export ur all contacts from contacts menu...u can backup them in ur sd or sd card and copy them in ur pc and then after flashing import back the contacts......this is the best way i do.......coz in this contacts remain as same as last time.......nothing is change no pic and associated contacts of gmail and other remove.
The best was is move your contacts to your Gmail account and let them sync.
Then if you have to wipe your device you can get everything back by just entering your Gmail email address and password.

I only sync my contacts and calendar to google. Don't technically use the phone or sim at all. Every flash I add my google account again and it's all back!
That's the way to do it.
Sorry for being stupid but how do I sync my contacts to gmail

The export as stated in the second post is my way to go.

What about the joined contacts with facebook, do they come back after restore?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I use both local back up (SD ) and google sync
I prefer Google Sync .
Google sync is good, it actually can restore your contacts to early time , I backed back to SD card too but till now , I haven't use it .
Google all the way, so easy! I really can't see what the problem is!

They do in my case. Or you could try an add-on contact manager app like GOcontacts which has the capability to search for duplicate contacts and then merge.

Me too, never lost any contacts or calendar entries...
i backup phone numbers in sim and all of them in google and facebook contacts stays there as it will synch back
backup contacts to sd card.... move them to PC then export them to your gmail contacts... gmail will join same contacts.
thats it... never lose your contacts again
vCards
I often us the share option and send the contacts a vCard to my gmail, and after flashing i just go to that email and download the vCard and all my contacts are restored. The other plus in that way is that i can choose which one to sand as vCard
MyPhoneExplorer has always done it for me
1. Backup Contacts, SMS, Events
2. Installs APKs
3. File Explorer and lots more
Have never touched Kies....
I save my contacts to ext sd card

Same here, Google sync is most reliable !
try Uia backup contact
synchronising your contacts either with your google acc. or an exchange account is a very reliable solution to protect your contacts. if you setup your fon from scratch you just have to hook up to the network and get connected to your 'cloud service' - the sync function installed on your fon will do the rest in seconds / minutes.

SYNCING APPLICATIONS- what's the purpose???

Hey
I know it may be dumb to ask but is their a need to sync Facebook or social media apps with your phone? I'm Abit confused of the benefits? I have Google contacts synced to phone which i think will sync my new contacts so I'm fine with that but everything else is it really useful or is it better to have them auto sync turned off for battery life...
Cheers

I dont turn on my sync still i get the update in facebook, google mail, apps, and yahoo mail. I dont know what is the purpose of sync?
Its better to turn it off for added battery life.
That's what I'm thinking but I'm scarred to turn off Google as I want my phone contacts always backed up. That's the only one I have synced at the moment.

set those that can to push and you safe battery, rather then synch
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2
What's push and is their a option for that??
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA
yep when checking settings in email and accounts I think there are options there. At least for Exchange mail. Gmail its already push, dont think you can change it.
Always just check every setting within app as wel, Facebook has push for direct messages I think.
synch is old school, poll server, updates found download, repeat proces every few minutes
push, not entirely like blackberry but close, servers sees email and sends it to phone to download. Hence push.

Basically I sync all my contacts and photos with my google account so it will never be deleted unless I do
Syncing is to exchange the things between two accounts EG. Contacts & Google and if you lose the things on one account you can recover from the other account you synced by enabling the sync option again or you can delete on other also by syncing again
Its up to you
Hey
Thanx everyone for the advice. I think having Google contacts is a must just incase I add new contacts etc and I've synced my dropbox But apps like Facebook and whatsapp and twitter are so not needed so I've taken them all off. I can't understand why anyone would want to sync twitter or whatsapp lol just ludacris.
Cheers
