I might get pwned and such for asking this question,
but should I ask for a Nexus One or a new desktop for my graduation gift? It's a tough decision for me
nexus one buddy.
that's a tough one, and depends on what you want to do.
nexus is a great phone, and i love mine, but it isn't a computer. i built my computer, and i wouldn't trade it for my phone, that's for sure

The fact that you are putting the Nexus in the same category as a desktop should give you the answer....the Nexus of course!
Yep, really depends on what you want to do.
But, I find myself using the awesome Nexus One more then my desktop everyday!
I haven't used my computer in 6 months. I do all web, email on my phone. My phone has become more important to me than a computer.
However I do still have computer access at work.
Once the flash 10 update comes to the nexus, It REALLY can be a complete substitute for a computer.

We can't help you.
YOU need to decide, what's important.
Portability?
Are you a school student?
Do you have easy access to a computer when needed? At a friends, the GFs house, at work, etc.
Would this be your first kick-ass phone?
If not, what kind of phone do you have now? How do you like it? What do you use it for?
Are you a heavy texter? Gamer?
You like being able to read your RSS feeds everywhere?
You like being able to access the web from anywhere? Are you looking forward to FLASH on a mobile device?
Are you a techy geeky MoFo?
If you are, then you'll probably want to root your Nexus One and play with a few ROMs (Cyanogen, Enomther, Desire, etc.)
I see you ARE A techy geeky MoFo (you've rooted your Dream ).
THERE'S YOUR ANSWER!!!!
if your a pc gamer like me...then go with the pc, if its awesome and powerful!
Depends on your usage, as someone else said I built my own computer. But I use it for uni/work (game developer) and could simply not live without it. I could however live without the phone. (well, it'd be damn hard!)

Of course, but I already graduated so I no longer have the need for doing that kind of work on a computer. I was just giving my example for certain usage that the nexus functions like that for me.

I bought a legend because of it's specs, screen, finish (aluminium casing),it cost way less than an iPhone, and finally because of Sense. The only reason i wanted to see would it work is because im sick of Google waiting to open the Paid market in Ireland (i know this is the case in alot of other contries aswell)

The HTC Legend has simular specs to the iPhone and you cant put the compare the Nokia 3310 in any way to the HTC Legend. As s7yler pointed out it the iPhone has been ported to Android. Im sorry if i took 2 minutes of your time but i was just curious if it would work, or if we could see it in the future! Hell i haven't even rooted my Legend yet! So thanks for your reaction, as i said i was just curious.

true even android can be run on some of the WM devices, because of the boot process, and phone spec. But iOS has completely different boot system/process though its not possible to run it on other devices (for now) , besides have you seen iOS run on any other devices then Apple's ? don't thinks so mate..
Also one big thing to remember...
The only reson android runs on ipod/iphone is because android is open source... and that is more easy to handle and port (Not that i am saying it was easy for them to port Android to the i devices as apple hardware is also keep as close source) then a closed source system as iOS....
It will be the same as porting Windows 7 to ARM or PowerPC cpu.... not something you can do without having access to the source code of windows...
Hmm i have run MAC OS on a pc so it is possible tbh

to be nice i wont say how many ways that statement is wrong...
but most of osx IS open source... NONE of iOS is open source...
And the only reson it is possibel to run osx on a pc is because the basic part of osx is open source and that is the kernel so it can be modded and rebuild to work on diffrent cpu's....
I know there are bin patched versions of the mach_kernel but they are never as good as the one that they make when apple release the source and that normal happens 14 days after the os update...
(to end this with a statement why i can say all this i can tell you i have been a active osx86 user the last 5 years, been really involved in the help channels and know a lot of the devs)

There is a solution to paid market not available. When I had android on my Diamond I used it for a while and the paid application were still unavailable in canada at this time so I made a little search on this and I found something.
There is an application that can make the market think you are from UK or US and then you have acces to all the paid application. You still need to pay but you have acces to buy them at least.
I don't remember the name but it was something like "market enabler". Sorry I erased all android data of my phone cause there is no more development in this direction and GPS, bluetooth and camera were still missing. I can't even think of living without google maps with AGPS and speeking while driving is illegal over here unless using a bluetooth headset or an hands free system.
Good luck with that.

Hey whats up guys, I have a Galaxy Tab on the way from sprint.
It's my first actual official Android Device (Had a T-Mo MDA, Sprint Mogul, TP1, and TP2). I have a Touch pro 2 that I was able to put Froyo 2.2 on... But that device became too tedious and I felt it was way behind compared to most Android Devices.
So I have a couple of days between now and when I receive it.
I was doing some browsing on the capabilities but I'm 100% sure I haven't seen all of what can be done.
So I figured that everyone can chime in as to what capabilities this thing has, and other members can be informed of what their device is capable of that they didn't even know.
Rooted, and Unrooted.
I think this can help everyone being that it's all condensed in this thread.
Thanks guys

I was, at first, a Tablet hater. Not sure what possessed me to get the Tab, I think I wanted to see what the hype was about.
I honestly, don't use my laptop much anymore. It's become such an effort to turn it on, and browse the web, when my tab is near instant. 3G is a must. Its what's made it so useful. Its just a fantastic device. Games are amazing on the 7" screen, browsing is a delight (I use Dolphin HD) and its just so portable. It'll fit into some jean pockets and most back pockets of any trousers.
I would buy a 2nd version of a Tab instantly.

Whoot! I have read into this. Google Play is a vision by Google to streamline connectivity of devices. New phones that are coming out are going to very much designed like the iphone, internal memory, internal battery. This is because Google has a cloud service, and most devices will have 16-32 GB memory, and that is it. Sony has the new Ion coming out and has made arrangements with dropbox for 50GB of cloud storage. The cloud is in. On the phone side, manufacturers know we want the latest and greatest, which is why there is a 6-9 month shelf life on most devices, and we upgrade every 18-24 months anyway.
So Google wants you to know that anything you have on your phone, you can have on your tablet or PC, much like Apple. And in order to do that, they could no longer call it "Market" as the name indicates that you can only buy products. With Play, you can buy, but store in the cloud and play the items on your phone and PC. Which is popular because Windows also does it. And with the fear of Windows closing in on Android, you bet that Android/Google is going to anything to keep an edge.

Lol 2 things you said that really cracked me up.
1. Google had cloud storage first so they're not doing anything "like apple"
2. Have you seen sales stats recently? Windows phones are nowhere near catching up to Android lol.
But yes I do agree that most smartphones nowadays are getting built like the iPhone which I completely hate. Why would you not want a removeable battery? Why would you not want external storage? Just makes no sense to me.

Correct they did cloud first. The article I read was saying they want consumers to have a better idea that your goodies are seamlessly assessable between your devices. I knew that, but I gather that not everyone knows that. And another article said that windows mobile will be a giant by the end of the year. I disagree there too, but you don't know what they got up their sleeve.

Clean flash and donate to a local charity of your choice
Why don't you donate it to a hardworking dev? I'm sure they could do something useful with the second phone.
The good first gen single core phones are starting to go off plan and turn up second hand. I picked up a Galaxy S Epic Sprint (the one with slider keyboard) last week at my favorite pawnshop for $60 mint, to mess with and use as a mini tablet. Apparently either the prior owner didn't deactivate it, or with Sprint (no sim card) once activated the phone works fine on wifi. First did factory reset, then rooted, now everything including GPS seems to work (other than the phone and cel data of course, at some point I'll install a Google Voice solution).
I'm using it as a middle of the night reader with a screen dimmer app. My wife has been bothered by the bigger screen lighting of the NC, so something smaller helps. Its a pretty good ereader/podcast player for this purpose. Lots of reader/news apps seem optimized for its WVGA screen, some have night mode. And I put a couple of games on it for the kids to use in the car instead of giving them my real phone.
Now I need to figure out something to do with the slider keyboard. Thinking maybe a remote keyboard app for the PC, anybody recommend an android app that will convert a slider keyboard to a remote computer keyboard through a network?
Hi,

I'd say put it away somewhere safe in case something happens to the S3 and you need a backup phone. That's what I'm planning to do with mine. My Galaxy S will be a backup and would be the one I would take on long hikes cause I won't be too bothered if I drop it, although I've kept it in mint condition.

Otherwise, I'd always planned that whenever I upgrade, I'd likely keep it for its amazing audio quality from its Wolfson DAC and Voodoo Sound; it's hands down the best portable music player I've owned.
