Is this possible? To use an optical trackpad on the G1 like what the Desire and the incredible have ?
Anything is possible is you have superglue.... And while your at it add the 4 inch SuperAMOLED from the Samsung Galaxy and a 1.5 Ghz scorpion processor...
Kidding aside, no its not possible. The is no room on the G1 to add one, then after that you would need drivers and software that can use it....

lol ok...yea I am not familiar with the optical track ball, I know the regular trackball basically kind of just plugs in...I understand it may need drivers and such, but if it plugged into the same ports, maybe it would not need any drivers and software and it could just be recognized as a regular trackball ? ...
anyways -thanks for the response...
wouldn't it be nice if we could do this though ?? haha

I'm pretty sure that drivers are specific to a single thing and wont work with both a trackball and a trackpad. But I love the trackball on my G1=p It's the best pacman experience you will ever have=p
Hi!
Basically this mod would be possible to implement, but i think it's not worth it.
Depends on the optical unit how things would work out in detail.
Example:
http://blogs.blackberry.com/2009/12/inside-the-trackpad-a-blackberry-science-lesson/
You'll need at least a technical datasheet of the unit you'd like to connect to.
Trackball unit on G1 is based upon 4 magnetic field sensors toggling some GPIO. So the "driver" is basically some lines of code.
Maybe there are also optical trackpads with a similar output coding.
Then whole stuff would be mostly a mechanical challenge...
... mejorguille is right at this point, the G1 is no PC so you'll need at least some super glue and a lot of technical skills.
If there's a more complex protocol behind the coding of the coordinates, then you'll have to write some tricky driver code additionally.
Anyway, go for it if you like.....

scholbert

agreed. i want skymap too.
indeed, if i possessed the knowledge or the will to obtain the knowledge.... this app would have been created long ago
you would need a compass in the device to get that type of movement accuracy.
I know someone that has somthing like that for his android, just need to port it to wm.

and his android device also has a compass.
any sort of augmented reality program will not run usably on our devices. the gsensor just isnt enough. we can define y axis and x axis, but no z axis. which is what the compass does, it gives the device a control, a constant, a place that is always going to be the same. it can then use the other relevant info from the accelerometers to always know exactly how the phone is positioned.
run one of the xandroid builds, install skymap, and just try to use it. if youre some how able to get it lined up, and move VERY slowly, you might be able to get it to work. again, one small jerk of the phone, and you will be looking through the screen in a totally different area.
the only wm phone i know of with a compass built in, is the hd2. there might be another one, but i never heard about it.

Does the Omnia II have a capacitive touch screen or is that just the Leo?
There's a gallery of NC teardown pics at zdnet. XDA isn't letting me post the link because i'm not verified, so maybe someone else can.
This was inevitable, but I hadn't been able to find it until today. I thought others might be interested as well.

From the pictures I see a good possibility for a bigger battery, or even adding a second one. Lots of room, it won't be pretty but something could be fashioned to fit.

Looks good.
Nice to see some more details about the NC coming out, I have yet to find a *detailed* list of the real hardware specs though.. most of the "tech specs" list mention supported ebook formats...
I ordered one of these the other day via a relative in the US and hopefully will be getting it next week some time.
I will miss the haptic feedback though so am wondering if it will be possible to replace the useless mono speaker with a motor from a mobile phone or something..

Cool idea. But it'll only work for typing and maybe apps that have clicking sounds. Still, it should work just fine. Of course you'd have to attach it to the inside real tight. Duck tape won't do

Thanks, my mind is kinda running over with ideas actually
From the teardown pics the internals seem pretty basic and there is hopefully a good bit of space. I would love to know if there are any available usb / jtag / etc headers available though.
If not I was thinking also about the possibility of modifying the usb connector with a switch and a usb 3g dongle inside, I just don't know if there is a 3g dongle that is not based on mini pcie though.
As for the haptic feedback I guess you can just assign a "sound" to everything that should produce feedback.
What about the accellerometer, is that sufficient to control cars in steering wheel based games?
/mrintegrity
To answer your very last question yes.. I have Asphalt5 running and won my first race.

The usb dongle would have to support android. To my knowledge there isn't one... but physically it is possible to stick it inside. They aren't that big, just look big cause of the plastic casing.
I think realistically, for now a bigger battery should be the first thing attempted, given the OS limitations we'd face with other mods. It would also allow us to run the NC at 800 mhz at all times via setcpu.

Did you download from the Gameloft site? I couldnt get the version from my G2 to get past the license check, and the only other version I've tried is a pirated 3.13 version. I would be glad to pay for it if I knew it would work.
Tried disabling the compatibility mode and the top of the screen is blank and I have to press high to get selections to work.
EDIT: I figured it out. You have to load a version made for Samsung Galaxy Tab or Galaxy S. I downloaded a version from Gameloft.com with Galaxy Tab selected as my phone and the game displays fine. If you purchase from their website you have to do some trickery. When they text you a download link, just type the link address from your phone in a browser on the Nook Color and the download should start and install the game.
isolated_epidemic - I'm having the same issue as you with Asphalt, as well as some of the other GameLoft games. Does anyone have a solution for this?
Has anyone used one of these and do you think it would work with the NC? Not having bluetooth (at least for the moment, maybe it can be enabled) is a downer for a tablet but a google search showed that they are on the market. Im wondering if that could be used as an input solution.

Did this hope ever get realized? From what I can tell cm6 came out Dec.6.
I'm trying to get either a bt or usb keyboard working on Nook color
good idea: do a teardown
Sorry, didn't do enough reading. Part of the cm6 references are requests to tear down the device to see its bt and usb otg capabilities:
From the donation thread:
rboatright said:
I STRONGLY SUPPORT ka6sox's need to tear a nook color down for analysis to the remove chips from the board level (this is called "salting" a board... I have no idea why, perhaps because like putting salt on a slug, it's dead when you're done.)
Here are some things we need hardware teardown to identify....
Bluetooth is enabled or disabled by putting +V on a pin on the UNDERSIDE of the wl1230 chip. No way to tell if BT is enabled without a teardown.
USB chip on the board is capable of USB master and USB otg mode, however the correct strapping of the voltage regulators supporting that chip can not be identified from above.
The extra pins on the USB connector the NC uses dissappear into the inside of the board, there is no way to ensure that they are MERELY power connectors.
FM Radio is enabled with +v on a pin just as the BT is. Again requiring a teardown.
There may be jtag pads available near the CPU, this would allow devs to have serial access to the CPU during boot to develop custom kernels, at the present time, there is NO CONSOLE during boot. This would help. Again, no way to identify them without teardown.
it is possible that an fm antenna can be easily attached to a test pad. But we won't know until we know if the fm output is DIRECTED to a test pad.
there's more, but that alone justifies ripping a nook color to bits.
Eugenekay has agreed to buy a board for this purpose if the community agrees it's a good use of funds, and ka6sox is uniquly qualified to do it, since he's done it before...

So the consensus seams to be that it isn't feasible for now, but might be in the future?
It would certainly be nice if it were, I'm planning on starting some college courses this spring and would love to be able to do quick note taking without having to lug around(not to mention the extra cost) another netbook or something similar. I'm just not fast enough with the software keyboard to keep up with a lecture.
PS- for those of us who are new here, what is CM6?
It is custom ROM that could be flashed on your nook in the future.

Dealextreme.com has a foldable bluetooth keybard that folds into a package about the size of two iPhones 4s stacked. They're asking a little less than$ 70.
I'm looking for an answer to this question and can't seem to find it anywhere. As we know, stock rooted is limited to two touch points. I'm told the iPad supports 10. I would love to have just 3-4 TBH. Everywhere I look, I get differing answers. Some say the limitation is hardware. Some say it's a minor software thing. Some say it's at the kernel level. If I run CM7 or HC or Nookie Froyo do I get more than two touch points? Would I need to flash a new kernel? I'm running some gaming emulators and can't press A, B, Start and Select at the same time and it's killing me. Just 3-4 touchpoints would vastly improve my quality of life at this point.

I am sure other, more knowledgeable devs will have some input, but I will drop what i have here from personal work.
From reading the specs, we have a chip that SHOULD support up to 4 unique touch points. What we have at the software level however, is a very confusing driver that was modded by B&N, and does not seem to support more than 2. For a while, i worked on modding the driver, but could never get more than 2 points. I also used other drivers, that in theory should have worked, but would not seem to register any touches (its rather hard using a nook with no touchscreen).
Now, i don't want to say its impossible, unless it can be shown that the hardware itself is in some way lacking. The touchscreen support seems to be only limited at the kernel level, and a well written driver SHOULD support it. When we will see it though, is a mystery.
Easier would be just to buy a cheap used wiimote and a "classic controller" (get a nyko one for $10 at gamestop.)
$20 and you got yourself a portable gaming machine. It really is worth the cash to have a controller for all of those emulators. Hell, you could probably get away with just the Wiimote if you're just playing Nes/Gameboy.
Edit: Looking at amazon there are a lot of choice combinations for under $30 with shipping included. Including a Nyko Wireless Wii Classic Controller for $26 open box.
I realize I'm not addressing the touch point question but wouldn't it really make life easier to just get a Wiimote? I mean, if emulators are your thing, its hard to beat using an actual controller.

Yeah, that would definitely work, but then it's just one more thing I have to carry around. Then I have to worry about propping the screen up and the screen falling over when I'm using it, etc, etc... I just wanna kick back on the couch and play NBA Jam. But I have to hold a direction button, turbo and shoot all at the same time to pull off the classic dunks which obviously isn't possible with only two touches. I was just curious a) where the limitation is (hardware, Eclair, kernel, etc...) and b) is there another ROM out there that fixes it.
If it's an Eclair issue, then I'm more than happy to burn Nookie Froyo to an SD card and boot it when I wanna get my game on. If it's a hardware issue, then I'm SOL of course and if it's a kernel issue, there may be a potential fix somewhere. I had just looked and hadn't found any definitive answer. I'm not a dev so I have no clue where to even start. It would just be nice to have more than two touches.
Oh I see, sorry =(. Truth be told you'll probably just have to live without that game when on the go... I think all of the roms are going to have the same issues though, as it's my understanding they all started with the base B&N kernel and built it up.
And I know what you mean, it can be a pain to carry that stuff around if your job or life don't support it. I work in the school system so I can easily throw the stuff in my backpack for breaks. =\
Edit: I don't know what your uses of the Nook Color are, but for around a $100 you can get a used PSP that can support emulators and is very pocket friendly.

That answers my question. Just not the answer I wanted. Writing an app is stretching my skills. Screwing with the kernel is something I do not have the abilities to do.
Ok guys, maybe this question has been asked and maybe it has not. I'm typing this on the fly via mobile of course and don't have the time to scour through related forum threads which may or may not be able to help me out.
That said, I have several adapters that I use for packet injection. I have one which has an SMA port for antennas and I bought a 16dBi high gain antenna to use with another project and I am also using with this adapter.
Anyway, I woukd like to be able to use this adapter with its extended range while I'm wardriving.
I have microUSB to Female USB cables for my phone. But connecting a device does little other than power it on.
I need a script that disables the on board WiFi and installs a driver for the secondary adapter and then enables it. Or perhaps there is an app out there that makes this easier.
Anyone have any suggestions or solutions to this dilemma I'm facing?
Thanks in Advance!

Ok, I have not tried this yet but if it works in anyway similar to how it would on a laptop then I should succeed. Using either "Linux Deploy" or Complete Linux Installer" I can install various Linux distros on my phone virtually. Even custom images can be used. But by stock you can install Ubuntu, Debian, (not sure why they offer both), Backtrack, Kali (again, unsure why they offer both) and several other Linux distros.
If I install Backtrack, which I know supports the adapter I want to use when running from live cd or live usb from a laptop (or even Kali Linux) then it should also work on my device. It's all about the drivers and disabling the devices built in WiFi adapter....
I have to take my phone back to stock due to some issues which have recently occurred. I will S-Off first probably, then return to Stock, re-root and after I recover my contacts, programs, etc, etc, I will attempt to install a virtual image of either BT5 or Kali and see what happens.
Again, I will keep updated this thread. If it works then everyone with an M7 from Sprint will be able to utilize this method.
:fingers-crossed:

Hmmm, interesting... I actually have a Nexus 7 - 32GB 1st gen, it's a nice, smooth tablet but doesn't hold a candle many other devices out there. If I had my choice of device to turn in to a "hacking" tab, uh, Phablet... I would choose the Galaxy Note 3.
Check out the arena....
http://www.phonearena.com/phones/compare/Google-Nexus-7-2013,Samsung-Galaxy-Note-3,Samsung-Galaxy-Mega-6.3/phones/8021,7984,7805
But, aside from that... You would think that you would only be limited to any devices hardware capabilities... Technically, we could probably take an old Toshiba or Acer Iconia tablet, install and/or run either BT5 or Kali virtually on top of whatever version of Android the device is running and have near the same capabilities that you would with a laptop.
If/when I figure out a way to use my Alpha AWUS036NH on any of the devices I own I'll be able to wardrive and pick up networks from nearly and 1/8th - 1/4 of a mile away. No exaggeration. Utilizing a 16dBi omni directional antenna instead of the measly 5 dBi that's included make an enormous difference.
But, rather or not it will work so easily running BT5 or Kali virtually over JellyBean or ICS compared to the ease of a live/virtual/physical installation of either OS on a laptop or PC will only be known once it has been tried. I wish I had more free time to do what I truly love to do with technology instead of the repetitive and thankless administration tasks I perform at work... The grass is always greener though... Lol!
One of these weekends I'll get something going, and I'll post it and hopeflly save peeps that $899. The only thing they will have to pay for will be the adapter(s) they choose to utilize and the tablet, phablet, or even phone that they want to use The rest will be open source and included with (hopefully) current and future releases of Kali Linux now that BT5 is suddenly and abruptly "dead". Did that catch anyone else by surprise or just me? Lol!
