MicroSD Card? - Droid Incredible Accessories

So far I have have seen mixed reports that the Incredible supports 16, 24, 32GB Micro SD. So, what is the max size?
Also, what speeds can it support? Class 6, higher?

I currently have a 16gb class 6 card and haven't had any troubles. I would imagine no troubles with a 32gb card as well.
Sent from my ADR6300 using Tapatalk

Incredible supports up to 32gb but not actually able to format the card.

I am using 16GB with no problem.

This is a question for those who have used both Class 2 and Class 6 card and have TONS of music, do you guys notice a difference in load times when switching between Artist/Albums/Genres? I know class rating designates write speeds, but i am just curious if there is a noticeable difference in read speeds.

I don't know about music (since I use an iPod Touch for that), however the OEM looking packaged (no class information or other details on it) 2GB SanDisk MicroSD card I was given by Verizon when I bought/activated my Incredible provides a solid 6MB/sec write and 8MB/sec read speed (I'm pretty sure it's a Class 2 device, SanDisk just happens to make quality cards).
I think current CPU use + programs/services running in the background would have more to do with any lag in the situation you describe than anything else.

With regards to Class 6 vs. Class 2, the ones that have the 16Gb Class 6 card, do you have any issues mounting the card from Recovery mode? I have a 8Gb Class 6 card and it does not mount in Recovery mode (formatted properly/etc). Also, can we get the make/model of the cards that are Class 6 and works in Recovery mode?
Thank you.
-Mike

I have a 32gb card in my Incredible, and it works just fine. However, as mentioned above, the phone cannot format the card, so you have to format it in your computer, before you install it in your phone.

Thank you spotmark, I have VZW's 32 Gb Sandisk card [think those are c2] on the way, and you just saved me a TON of frustration!! I'd have been trying to format it w/ the phone. Kudos kind sir!

I am using 32gb class 2 from Verizon store. Benchmarks as a class 6. No issues w/ 720P or formatting. I did slow format with w7, took some time but no issues. Usable 29.71G
Edit: Only time I notice lag is USB mass storage takes maybe 30 seconds to show card. Until then it shows as an empty removable drive. With my 8g C6 it shows immediately. Same when phone is "preparing SD Card" It takes a few seconds with the 32g.

Tank - Thanks for the context and learning - I didn't know those actually rated/benchmarked to a c6! Cool - this gets better and better!
I Also know what to watch for/expect on PC and handset when the card arrives. Gracias!

Can the HD2 benefit from class 6 SD? Or is it a bottleneck >Class 2?

I ordered a class 6 16gb card to replace the slow-ass class 2 8GB card I had in my HD2.
First of all I couldnt find the format sd tool in my energy rom (1st July) so I had to format the card using vista while the HD2 was connected in disk drive mode. THAT TOOK OVER 1 HOUR.
(Is there a cab file to install the "Format SD Card" tool for the newer energyroms?)
Anyways after formatting (Fat 32, 16KB cluster), I started to copy my 1.4GB sd backup file to the card using the same method as above (disk drive mode)....
My maximum write speed was 2.7MB/sec. Average 2MB/sec.
Class 2 speeds????
After restoring the backup, which took forever, I ran spb benchmark on the card and was gutted to get slightly lower results than the old class 2 I was replacing.
Can the HD2 make use of anything faster than a class 2 card?
Has anyone here tested a class 6 or even 4 card and found good write speeds (~6MB/sec, or ~4MB/sec)?
Does it sound like I have bought a lemon (class 2 labelled as class 6)?
I have spoken to the seller and he is adamant that they ARE genuine class 6. Reckons he tested some of the batch in TrueHD cameras which will not accept <Class6. Seems genuine and some of his feedback states that the cards are Genuine class 6. Which leads me to think that the bottleneck could be the HD2... Does that sound likely?
I'm waiting for a microsd USB reader to arrive so I can test the card outside of the HD2, but Until I can do that... can anyone tell me if a class 6 is wasted in a HD2?
The strange thing is that when browsing photos/wallpapers etc, the thumbnails ARE loading maybe 3x quicker than my old class 2. So I'm pretty confused about this one.
Can anyone shed any light here? Feel free to post benchmark results/screenshots etc.
Thanks in advance.
can anyone PLEASE answer this ^^^?
Is there any point having a class 6 card in the HD2 instead of a class 2 or 4 card?
there is a thread in the accessories section have a gander in there, I no this is Q&A's but lots of talk about mem cards in the accessories section mate
Cheers mate, I'll take a look.
I will move this thread there. I also recently bought a Class 6 card and and have seen a huge improvement in media reading and over all performence.
I get 4-5MB/s both for reads writes with my 16GB class 6 card in disk drive mode.
Thanks zelendel and kilrah.

That is exactly the kind of data I'm looking to compare.
Whith my 'class 6' Im getting just under 3MB/S WRITE and under 6MB/S READ when using the HD2 in disk drive mode.
If I use the card in a USB 2.0 reader I can get around 5.5MB/S Write and ~11-13MB/S read.
Based on this alone would you say my card is a class 6 or not. I'm beginning to think it may be a class 4 re-labelled.
Picture browsing etc is faster with my class 6 but all benchmarks indicate it is identical speed to my genuine Kingston Class 2.
What do you guys reckon, Should I send this card back for a refund???
Well if you're getting 5.5 and over 11MB per second with a card reader then we can safely assume it's class 6. The bottleneck is something to do with the phone, rom, cable or simply the phone doesn't like this particular card etc...
EDIT: Test your class 2 card with the memory card reader and see if you get similar results.

Thank you for helping me clear things up.
Comparing the 'class 6' and the 'class 2' transfer speeds is where I really get confused here.
Transferring a ~700MB .Avi to and from SD using a reader:
Kingston Class 2 8GB:
Read 12.5MB/s
Write 5.4MB/s
Unbranded Class 6 16GB:
Read 12.5MB/s
Write 6MB/s
So, from this, would you say its safe to assume:
1. The class 2 card is a good one, performing at almost class 6 speeds.
2. The class 6 card is 'Genuine' and shouldnt be returned.
3. There is a bottleneck when using the HD2 as a card reader/disk drive. I should be getting more than 2.5mb/s write speeds in this mode.
4? Does 12.5MB/sec sound close to USB 1.1 speeds? could my reader or even USB port (Vista laptop) be another bottleneck?
Once again thank you for helping me make sense of all this.
At least I now know that the 16gb card doesnt really need to be returned.
Can you give me your oppinions on the above?
Well class 2 means you should be getting a minimum 2MB/s speeds and class 6 means you should be getting a minimum 6MB/s.
Seems like you have a very good class 2 card.

Your class 6 is performing to spec.
Personally I would never buy an unbranded card but that's me. A branded card may perform better than there class rating e.g. Your Kingston brand I've always used Sandisk personally...
I've just managed to drum up enough funds to get myself a HD2 and now looking to upgrade my HCSD card to 16GB. To get the "right" class I tried to find the spec on the SD interface but I cannot find anything and the best data I can find is that I shouldn't waste my money on unbranded devices, I would always buy a SANDISK device for something I relied on! For data and communication!
People seem to get appropriate speeds for the class of device they have, if they are branded and sometimes if unbranded. However, there doesn't seem to be anything better than class 6 results debated or given. Is it a VERY rash assumption that the fastest the HD2 interface can go is Class 6?
Chris
Does this mean its not worth getting 32gb cos its a class2
& theat would make the phone slower cos lot more stuff on it
& will take more loading time & play Videos lagy ?
anyone useing 32gb ?
Thanks
My experience was positive with higher class micro SD.
At first, I used 8GB micro SD bundled with my HD2 and didn't notice improved loading speed. Later, I changed it with higher class one, same 8GB, with same manufacturer, Sandisk. Higher class one has name "Ultra" on it. Now with changed SD, loading became WAY faster. "Wow" I realized the higher speed of CPU of HD2.
My 2 pennies.
NEVER EVER buy unbranded memory cards!
Keep an eye on Sandisk cards only and even prefer them to Transcend and Kingston.

[Q] About SD Card

Hello
I got my Legend about 2 months ago, and I have a big problem with storage space...
What is the biggest sized SD card the Legend can use?
What is the type of SD card (micro, mini, etc...)
What is SD card class?
Thank you very much
microSD compliant with SD2.0 Standard (aka microSDHC)
The biggest size available currently is 32GB.
I don't know if even more is possible with microSDHC or if bigger cards will only be possible with SD3.0 (aka SDXC) but that question is not relevant as you can't buy any greater then 32GB yet.
The Class of the SDCard is a measurement for guaranteed minimum speed in random read/write.
The Class does not provide any information about real-world speed or max speed.
For your mobile phone the class is a pretty useless criterion as you don't need any guaranteed minimum speeds but good overall speeds ESPECIALLY sequential.
The guaranteed minimum speed is important for HD Video Cameras for example where you write data all the time at a given speed (resolution).
thanks.
but I DO need class with high speed because I want to use Data2Ext...
Don't pick uSD card based on class !! class tels you MB/s for sequential write only... you need a card that is overall fast, I had 16GB class 10 Kingston and data2ext was just horrible!
Now I'm with class 4 Sandisk mobile ultra and it is in fact faster in every test I ran...
So read reviews before you buy
ye but that is exactly why im asking...
well then, I recommend sandisk mobile ultra as I have it and it is OK, there are probably faster cards...just see the small files read / write speeds in reviews those are of greatest importance
i purchased a kingston 8GB class 4 which crapped out. android kept reported sdcard unexpectedly removed. tried all sorts (formatting in windows, android, quick, long, etc).
RMA replacement did exactly the same, so i'm guessing kingston class 4's are best avoided.
If I recall correctly I have a 16GB microSDHC Class 4 card. After applying data2ext with this card, my Quadrant scores hit around 1500, which is crazy.
This is where I found my card: http://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-16G...P06K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1298984123&sr=8-1
I personally recommend this card.
witch is better class 4 or class 6?

I've got a Sandisk Ultra Mobile 16gb SDHC which works fine in the Legend. Make sure you format it with the phone to stop it being dismounted, well known issue and the fix

Which microSD card is the MOST STABLE and FASTEST for using HoneyComb in SD card?

So I finally got HoneyComb working on my Nook Color (NC), residing in the microSD card using a Kingston 8GB Class 4. However, this card seems to be one of the slowest and using the HC in NC is almost unusable.
Example:
- Screen rotation takes 3-5 seconds
- Opening new app, depending on which app, can take 1-5 seconds
- Browsing certain website can make the screen unresponsive
- etc..etc..
I know that the HC version available in this website is probably still in "preview" or beta stage and some slowdown is expected, but I am not expecting it to be THIS bad. So I think the culprit is the microSD card itself.
However, I have tried many different MicroSD card and none works. I.e. it gives the "decrypt storage" error when booting up the NC. The cards I have tried are:
- Patriot 16GB Class 10
- A-Data 16GB Class 10
- Kingston 8GB Class 6
The ONLY one that works so far is Sandisk. Unfortunately, from SanDisk website, I do NOT SEE ANY card higher than Class 4.
Thus, can you recommend which is the MOST STABLE and FASTEST card? I.e. the ones that did NOT give slowdown per the examples I have given above.
i'm using sandisk 4 GB class 4 HC
nookie froyo, runs fantastic.
Class 10 cards apparently dont do too well. lots of people have had issues with those. class 6 should be OK, class 2 and 4 workk very nice.
Do you have recommendation for a good Class 6 MicroSD card? SanDisk don't sell anything higher than Class 4. I tried Kingston Class 6 and my Nook Color just spit on it...

I am currently running trancend 8gb class 6. Havent had any issues with froyo, HC or Cm7 booting or running.
I'm using a A-Data Class 6 16Gb card with no trouble. I do have 2 Kingston Class 4 32Gb cards and they have the issue with the decrypt garbage when you try to boot up HC from the sdcard. I've also got a Class 10 32Gb Wintec card which I have not had time to test out yet as I just got it the other day.
After a failed Kingston 16gb class 10, I got a SanDisk 8gb Class 4 and it's speedy enough. I notice very minimal slow down on some menus but I don't know if that's just the OS itself (being a preview after all)

That's the exact same card I have, and you did NOT experiences any of the slowness I posted in my 1st thread?
How drastic is the difference between Class 2 and Class 4?
I know that it says that it processes twice as fast, but is it noticeable? Can somebody give an example of when you can actually tell the difference? Playing music, watching movies, booting from microsd?
I have a Sansdisk class 2 8gb card that performs just as well as my class 10 Patriot 8gb (which has booted both HC and currently used as storage for my eMMC CM7 install.)
Sansdisk severely underrates their SD's and many other manufacturers overrate theirs. It is not a perfect rating system.
I would recommend going w/ sansdisk in whatever size you can afford. Class 2/4 will be plenty fast.
Before I switched back to Froyo I was running off the SanDisk 8Gb card from BestBuy - $20 - which I found very responsive. I think it is Class 4, but I could see any label on the card itself or the package.
The SD card speed was not the reason I switched back, it was the lack of other features in HC preview. I can't wait for an AOSP release
8GB Cards
I currently have 2 8GB microsds that I switch between:
-Transcend 8GB Class 6 running Honeycomb from Amazon. Tested it with h2wtest and got 16MB/s write and 14MB/s read. (Not sure if that is a typo on the tool or not and it's supposed to be bits instead of bytes, but that's what it says).
-Sandisk 8GB Class 2 running Nookie Froyo. Tested at 14MB/s write and 18MB/s read.
Both cards run their respective ROMs well, so it seems to jibe with what chisleu said about Sandisk underrating their cards. I could also be limited by the USB adapter I was using, but I had another adapter that was limiting it to 4MB/s both ways.

duping a microsd

I've been running Nookie Froyo on a 4GB class 4 microSD card.
I just bought a tested 16GB class 10 card and have been trying to dupe the 4GB card to it.
I'm on a Mac and I used 'dd' to backup the 4GB card and clone it to the 16GB card. But the 16GB card won't boot.
To backup, I plugged the card into the Mac, dismounted all volumes in Disk Utility, and ran dd: dd if=/dev/disk2 of=/Volumes/MacHD/4gb.img
The I swapped cards and ran dd again: dd if=/Volumes/MacHD/4gb.img of=/dev/disk2
This appears to work perfectly and everything on the 16GB card looks good.
When I test boot the 16GB card, i get the usual two 'Loading...' prompts and then the 'android' with the flashing cursor stays on forever - I don't get the flashy 'android' logo that's supposed to follow. And if I swap the 4GB card back in, it works perfectly.
Are there any special args for 'dd' that I need to use??
From what I've been able to find in other posts, this should just work??
sandisk 8gb micro sdhc bootable can not write using linux dd command.
i have sandisk micro sdhc class 4 card i am trying to write froyo noookie 6.8 image on it using ubuntu 10.04 desktop linux dd command.
sudo dd if=>froyo noookie 6.8 image> of=/dev/sdb bs=1M
i formated using my micro sd using HPUSB as well as Ubuntu Disk utility.
i tried ubunut usb-imagewriter after some time its give error and quit.
please tell me how write nookie froyo 6.8 image on it.
i am using micro sd writer name is "Enter FNK tech 0100"
8gb microsdhc - SDSDQM-008G-B35N
thank you
What error did you get when running dd?
I have no idea what's going on in this thread..
Anyway, to answer the original topic...
Put in your card, find out which device it is, substitute it here. dmesg will tell you
dd if=/dev/device of=sd.img
Take your card out when it's done, put in the other card, run this, again replacing with the actual device being used
dd if=sd.img of=/dev/device
It's that simple. If they're the same size it should be fine, if the second one is larger you'll probably want to resize partitions to take advantage of the extra space, as it will be unused.
Still no joy
Khaytsus ... what you describe is almost exactly what I did.
But, just to make sure, I did *exactly* as you described ... writing the img file to my home directory instead of somewhere else.
But that made no difference. The 16GB card still doesn't get all the way thru the boot. As before, I see the two 'Loading' prompts, then the word 'android' in small blue courier characters with the flashing cursor. It sits like this forever ... until I shut it off ... sigh
There must be some difference between a 4GB and 16GB card ... block size or something ... that I have to account for in dd.
There have been multiple reports of 16gb cards just not working. I've also read plenty of reports of Class 10 cards not working. I have a class 8 16gb in my NC right now, and it works fine.
Just do it through recovery...

Did you try creating a NEW image on the 16g card? I bet it is just too SLOW. If it's too slow it'll never finish booting.
Its the card ....
computercarl set me off in a different direction.
I had a Class 2 16GB card laying around ... so I dd'ed it with the image ... and it worked ... albeit somewhat slower than the Class 4 4GB card I've been using.
So I guess there is a compatibility problem with some Class 10 cards??
Just too fast for the NC interface???
I'll have to get a Class 6 16GB card and see how well it does.
Class 8 16GB Card????
computercarl .... where did you get your Class 8 card???
I've searched around and they're really hard to find.
It came in my bosses Droid. I swapped it out for a class 2 4gb, and she never knew (Not a techie kinda person, as long as her email and calendar worked...)
And sorry, guess I lied. It's only a class 6. Google/Newegg says
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&Depa=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=16gb microsd class 6 has some really good ones for not too much.

So is this a Patriot 16G class 10? If so, that's why you are having problems.
Its definitely not a Patriot ... actually there's no brand name on the front at all.
I had read about all the knockoff cards out there .... most of them are Transcend cards. I bought it on eBay ... here's the text of the auction:

I've sent the seller an email asking what brand it is.
While my original purpose here is to move from a 4GB to a 16GB card, I would like to get something faster than the class 4 I'm using right now.
So maybe I should go ahead and get a Class 6 16GB card. Or does any one have any specific recommendations for a working class 10 16GB card??
Does anyone know what the performance difference would be between class 4, class 6 and class 10 cards on the NC???
Or any recommendations for going with a specific brand such as Lexar??
I would say you won't see a performance difference between a class 6 and a class 10...

[Q] Note sdcard read speed.

Hi,
I am eyeing for the sandisk mobile ultra 32gb class 6. It claims to have 30mb/s read speed which is really impressive.
But does galaxy note sdcard reader will be able to handle 30mb/s read speed? Because for what I know most card reader tops at 20mb/s which is why most cards even those class10 ones has read speeds of less than 20mb/s.
Please correct me if I am wrong.
Thanks.
I don't think Note can handle 30 mb/s .. someone with more insight on the hardware of the card reader on Note might be able to help you
I have 32GB 10 class I can help but tell me pliz how to chech the speed read write?

That's the 'realism' that I had in my mind. If I have a full 32gb card, and wanted to transfer my pictures and videos, which is what mostly the card will be used up for, how is the transfer speed will be? If I am able to use the full 30mb/s read speed on sandisk mobile ultra card, that can greatly reduce the amount of time to move 32gb of data off the sdcard.
For sdcard application usage within the phone itself, the only thing that I can think of that will use alot of bandwidth on the card is recording full hd video, which a class 6 card is more than enough to handle the write speed. If for read speed, a mere class 2 cards can do 8mb/s read speed which is fast enough to watch your regular hd video, listen to your mp3 etc.
You just can just connect the phone to pc as storage mass and the program will detect the drive. You can start the test using the software.
What is your microsd brand?
k heres my 2 cents, my family has 5 galaxy notes. Basically I tried many brands ranging class 4, 6 and 10. First off the class 4 32g are like 40% or so slower than the class 10's. The 2 class 10's I have are all different brand both 32g and I can tell you they don't really make a lot of diff in terms of speed its less than 0.5mb per sec diff (the slower class 10 is same brand as the Note and the other one starts with Lex???). Then you have the class 6 64g which runs up to around 10% or so slower than the class 10. At the end of the day what you find is class 6 and 10 are both fast but the class 4 are dam slow. On my machine I'm using the 64g card. Speed was determined and optimized by SD booster and SD tools.
Thanks for info, that's alot of GNotes you got there.. your family must like BIG SCREENS.
Anyway, my actual question was, is the GNote be able to handle 30mb/s transfer for the sandisk mobile ultra versions or atleast what is the highest read speed for GNote card reader.
There is one benchmark that I came across somewhere that proves that the card does actually deliever that transfer speed albeit using usb 3.0 port. It takes atleast a regular usb 2.0 reader on a usb 3.0port to achieve it. A usb 2.0 reader on usb 2.0 port barely makes the 20mb/s mark on the same card. So the usb 3.0 port is quite crucial even though a usb 2.0 reader is being used on it.
So yah, the ideal situation is someone actually has the sandisk ultra mobile card + GNote and is willing to give spare time to benchmark it for us and post it here.
