Sorry if this has already been asked but what are the top two lights in the top left for? must be in bright light to see and maybe a slight tilt
I think one is the light and one the proximity sensor!

They aren't lights but sensors. One detects the amount of light in a room to automatically change your brightness, and apparently the other is a proximity sensor, which I didn't know, but makes sense. The proximity sensor is why your screen turns off when you put your phone to your ear during a call.

Just got the new phone today. The LED lights aren't switched on by default. So when the phone is charging, have bluetooth switched on, missed calls etc.... nothing
In the sounds and notifications setup the tick box for the light is greyed out. Is there a registry setting to turn them on, or is my phone faulty ??

Do you mean the circle LED? Reading the manual they should flash or spin in a circle depending on whats happening. there is no Bluetooth light from what I can tell.

No not the circular light it works ok. There appears to be a small LED up beside the speaker (where your ear goes). It's not doing anything !
It's light sensor

Loads of people seem to make that mistake. I haven't actually bothered to take a good look at that area in the pics available on the internet - I probably should...

there are no "connectivity" indicator LEDs - ie WLAN BT Phone etc. only the indicator LED for missed call, unread email sms.
hi all im here to pick your big brains again.
ive got an orange diamond and its running fine and everything works but the small led doesnt flash ever for anything.
is this normal? does anyone else's diamond not flash
thanks for any help
By LED I take it your referring to the plastic visible within the earpiece? If so then it is the light sensor. No LED's at all that I'm aware of.
Ahhhh its the light sensor, ive been wondering the same thing as the OP.

thanks ive been puzzling bout that cos the review and the specs said led and i thought mine was faulty.
thanks for your help
Ok, I've had this over a month and I have never seen the second led blink or turn on.
The first one, near the "htc" letters above the screen, is on when charging and when I receive messages. The second one, above the "Sprint" letters on the top right corner, is never on.
Is it in fact a second notification led or us it there just to preserve the phone's symmetry?
Sorry if the question is ..retarded. thanks for the help.

I don't believe there's an LED under there, it's just to make the phone symmetrical.
the one on the right side is the light sensor, for the auto-brightness feature

+1
It is for auto brightness.
OH! I had no idea, thank you very much
Am a bit disappointed though haha
Also used for the Proximity Sensor app which btw, works gr8!!

I was going to include that as the sensor not only detects light but also proximity to change the brightness when it is either dark or light, but also how close the phone is to your face.

I need help with identifying the problem why my proximity sensor isnt working. This gets annoying because my phone turns the screen off when making a call and you can turn it back on since it thinks something is all the time in front of it. Is it maybe dust? On which side is the sensor located? Is there any software update for a proximity sensor?
If I type in *#*#0588#*#* that runs the proximity sensor test. The screeen goes green, vibrates and stays on 1 all the time( doesnt flick between 1 and 0 if I i move it). What can I do?
I've got a problem with mine aswell. It is always 0 in the test (it can't sense if i put anything over it).
It use to work but suddenly sort of died. I'm not sure what the problem is too but I would like a fix if anyone can come up with one
Funny thing though, my proximity sensor worked fine for 1 call this afternoon, but failed again soon after. :/
Looks like this is one big riddle for the samsung galaxy users. :/
I made a discovery.. If i shone a bright light on my sensor and held it really close to it (like 0.5-1cm away) then the proximity sensor would react and say something is covering it. Only works with a bright light though :/
How bright is that light? May I ask you what are the other 3 values of your sensors?

hmm it was the flash from my digital camera. I think any decent light would work. Try a torch, if that doesn't work try something a bit brighter.
As for the values, which 3 values do u mean?? sorry
Light, magnetic, accelerometer.
Which rom do you have?

oh, the values for accelerometer work fine, the xyz values react as they should when i move the phone.
Light sensor goes as high as 15000 lux when I shine the light on it.
Magnet sensor: 2 and the xyz change and react as they should. same with Azimuth Pitch and Roll.
As for the rom, I'm on darky's 10.1 Extreme Edition
As I thought my light sensor is also faulty. It goes only from 0-22lux
My solution

I don't know if this helps, I had a similar problem.. After i made a call my screen would not auto turn back on for me to disconnect the call.
It may have been coincidence, but after i disconnected "Increase volume in pocket", everything started working properly again.

Sorry, I should had given this information. This happened on a S4 (I9505) android version 4.2.2.
I don't know if this particular phone has the same menus has mine, but its how i solved my problem.
Having this issue too.
Nothing mentioned so far has worked for me.
Galaxy S4 SCH-I545 on VZW running 4.2.2.
Unfortunately I don't know when it started so I can't pinpoint any apps as possible triggers. However I have tried out all sorts of apps status bar apps, active notifications apps, launchers (Apex is my current now)
I never noticed it before, but two tiny red dots appeared on each of the bottom corners in the capacitative button area. It looked like some kind of led, but they were very dim. I tested it and it looks like they appear when the micro-usb is partially in. Has anyone else seem them or know what they are?
I noticed them too. I thought they were sensors for the active display so when you reach for the phone it senses your movement and lights up the display. Not sure though, just a guess.

Yeah, your guess is spot on.
I do believe they are infrared sensors (hence why you can slightly see them in the dark as red-colored dots), and they are pulsing constantly to detect any reflection that would indicate an approaching hand.
You are correct, there are actually 3 of them, two on the bottom and one on the upper right corner.

I think there's actually 4 of them, one in each corner. And 4 microphones, one in each corner.

Not in each corner actually. The bottom two and upper right. The 4th one is next to the proximity sensor and FFC. I saw it in a video posted on here before. Regarding the sensors that is.
Interesting.
Did not realize that feature was driven by IR sensors.
How do they tell the difference between an approaching hand, and being pressed up against your leg in your pocket?
The software is able to detect whether or not it is in your pocket based off of either the light sensor, IR sensors or possibly a combination of the two.

Wouldn't the motion sensor come into play in determining if it's your pocket?
I believe "Pocket mode" is determined principally by the "proximity sensor" - the same sensor that determines when the phone is against your cheek during a phone call and turns the screen off. When pocket mode is enabled, the "active display" is disabled, so it doesn't display notifications when it is in your pocket. I believe the pocket mode also disables the ir sensors, so it isn't trying to determine if you are reaching for your phone.

Correct. Cover the proximity sensor and give it a try. Shake the phone and wave your other hand, it won't turn on.

OK, still, what do the 3 red lights do, if you cover the proximity sensor, yes the screen won't turn on. But, the lights still light up and wont activate. They obviously aren't there to activate the screen, so what are they?
