Lost USB Connectivity - Touch Diamond CDMA

My Sprint Touch Diamond no longer connects with a PC via USB. It charges via USB without problem, but it doesn't connect for Activsync or file transfer.
2 questions:
1. I don't currently have the Sprint device insurance, but if I added it at $7/month, then filed the warranty issue, think it would get replaced?
2. I can still access my 4GB internal storage via Bluetooth. I have flashed my ROMs many times via USB, and was able to use the bootloader to reflash it back to the stock ROM that I had saved on my internal storage, in hopes that would fix my USB connectivity issues (it didn't). Do I dare flash my ROM again with a new one that I just copied over via Bluetooth?
Thanks in advance!

I am not with Sprint so cant answer that...
As long as you are confident that the file transfered over fine then it should be ok. Maybe try transferring the file over via WiFi, I would feel more comfortable doing that. I don't see any reason why either of these ways wouldn't work, how ever I don't like taking any risk wile flashing the last thing I need is a $200 paper weight.
Sounds to me that your problems are originating from the PC end not the Device. The reason being is that the devices charges via usb. Yes the device could still charge if the usb on the device is no good but its a lot easier to make sure there is nothing wrong on the PC side then diagnosing the usb connector on the device,

Follow-up for others who may have the same issue:
I can't get the Sprint insurance. Have to add it within 30 days (I think) of buying the device, and I bought it over a year ago on eBay.
I'm sure it's not a PC issues, as I'm not up to 8 different PCs (XP, Vista, and 7) and none of them recognize it, but they all charge it. Weird...
Just bought another one on eBay, so I may play with flashing it via a Bluetooth-transferred ROM. Then again, I'm sure someone could use the unscratched glass or other components of it on eBay...maybe.

Did you try a different usb cord? How much are you looking to sell it for?

I am also having a problem with active sync on a sprint diamond, flashed to cricket. I keep getting an error mes. "waiting for network" I have uninstalled and reinstalled the latest activesync several times, and I have changed usb cables and ports. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Tilt Broken USB [Data]

My Tilt suddenly won't communicate over USB. It'll charge just fine (from both the wall charger and USB port on the computer).
This happens on two computers (XP & Vista) tested on 5 USB ports between the two and 3 different mini-USB cables (I know some devices used to be really picky about those).
Neither the phone nor Windows does anything to acknowledge they're connected. I've verified all the settings on both ends (ActiveSync USB connections are enabled, I've tried with USB advanced functionality both enabled and disabled, etc etc)
I've also hard-resetted. For what it's worth, I'm currently running L26 V9.
So ideally, is there some magical way to get my USB working?
If not...I need to get it in warranty returnable status. I can flash the original AT&T ROM using my microSD card, but I need some way of getting the original SPL back on there. Is there a way to JumpSPL using an SD card?
Any suggestions?

Sounds like the USB port is bad...no magical fixes.
You're lucky you are still under warranty.
Just flash the original ROM, don't worry about the SPL version, they won't check it.

I mean...it's just pretty obvious because when you put it in bootloader mode it pops up and says "HardSPL" blah blah
Do they really just not even look?
same thing happened to me
Just today... I have posted thinking it was a bent pin but maybe it could be an update or something?
I was also wondering whether you can un supercid and change spls from a sd card.
All tilts are still within a year, right ?

I would say so, but I only found out it wasn't working because I went to ActiveSync in preparation for an upgrade to L26 V10. It had been syncing on L26 V9 with no problems until it randomly stopped. Also note that it doesn't work in the bootloader.

That's what I was hoping. However, for anyone else who finds this thread via search, I trudged through the entirety of the JumpSPL/HardSPL threads and there is currently no way to change SPLs without the use of USB on the Kaiser right now. It is apparently possible on the Hermes and older phones, which has caused some confusion.

Yup, they came out Sept/Oct 07. Guess I will go ahead and warranty exchange it.
one last thing...
Does anyone know if using the phone until the refurb comes is a good idea? They could easily see that it was used after you said it was broken. Also, I am assuming that to get a bad flash all you have to do is take your battery out while flashing. Can anyone confirm?

pc and phone dont get along...

running duttys wm6.1 rom from april. all was working well, decided to sync my phone the other day and my computer didnt recognize it. nothing popped up or anything. was like i never plugged it in. it still charges though. also have some keyboard problems and was going to see if att/htc would replace my phone but i'm pretty confident they dont want anything to do with me since i have dutty's rom on there. was going to put the official att rom back on but this no usb thing kind of kills that idea. any ideas???
are you running XP ? and do you have the latest version active sync ? if yes, try a different USB plug/cord, & do other devices work on the port you are plugging into?
using vista with mobile device center. just reinstalled it. tried 2 usb cables. tried a buddies pc with vista and it didnt work. he has cingular 8525 and his works with same cable i was trying to use on his computer. not sure what's wrong...i can plug flash drive into the usb port and its golden.
There are some vista related issues, try read tese and see if they are of help, I am running XP so i will not be of much use

not sure if it changes anything but i'm using x64 vista. dual boot x64 xp pro as well. tried it in both OS's and still nothing. tried the changing name in registry on phone and removing any partnerships on the pc. phone still charges fine but pc still doesn't recognize it's there. at this point i'm at a loss....
I occasionally get syncing issues with my Kaiser on Vista. Not sure what causes it - sometimes think it might by Orb running. Anyway my easiest fix has been to system restore to a point when it was working.
Another thing I have done is test on another OS. Looks like you have only tried it running on Vista so see if you can connect to an XP machine with ActiveSync on - you obviously can cancel the sync when the box pops up but least you can see that the process is still working and then if it does connect you can flash the old rom back on.
i'm dual booting on my computer and attempted to use activesync in xp and still no success. computer doesnt as much as flench when i plug in the phone. part of the connector works though b/c the "charging" light comes on so i dont know what's going on. it possible that usb connector on the phone is bad or you think its a pc issue?
My usb port failed, you can flash the stock ROM by SD card. att gave me no problem with warranty, but no word on whether or not a changed SPL will be charged the 450.
ive read some about flashing rom by sd card but no one really seems to "recommend" it. is it a pretty fail safe procedure like via usb or "not so much" ??
Make Sure You Flash Back Before Sending It In For Warranty.
yeah i figured as much. they get upset about changed spl or does anyone know if they check it? any pointers on flashing oem rom from sd card or should i just go read in the rom section? thanks !

Computer does not detect phone.

Hi there, I reset my Tilt to factory settings yesterday and now when I plug it into my computer it does not detect anything.
The phone does charge, so I know that the connection is there.
I've had this problem before but I can't remember what exactly it is that I did to fix it. I've searched the forum and I can't find anything helpful either.
Anyone know what I need to do to fix this?
Thanks!

Have you tried another cable?
hi, i got this problem tu. i plug in the usb cable, but nothing appeared on my computer.id doesnt say it detected anything (usually it says found new hardware). i tried with several usb cables.still the same. but the phone is charged with all those cables i tried.
Yeah tried it and still got nothing. I am so stuck on what it could be.
I've tried 3 different cables and still have nothing. It worked a couple days ago, but ever since I reformated my phone it stopped working.
I don't understand why my computer doesn't automatically detect it as it did in the past.
reformat it again?
/grasp at straws
My tilt is doing the same thing. 2 days ago I was updating it and when I connected it to the computer nothing happened. Yesterday I tried flashing a new rom, thinking it would wipe it clean and make it connect again, however, it did not work. I am at a loss. Any ideas?
did hard reset and still unable to detect my phone.i'm using G.DK. ROM
i still have the problem
i trized a lot of cables, but from now the computer even don't say that it an unknown plyg is, he simply doesnt detect it. i'm just able to charge my phone, that's it
and in fact i just wanna put the official french rom on it because it's in dutch, i'm bilingual but it's more pleasant to have my phone in my mother language!
tahnks all of you for your help!

Hmmm, this is starting to smell more than fishy with more and more complaints popping up... Just wiped out my laptop thinking it was an update that killed activesync; complete wipe and still no connection; every and any other type of usb cables connect flawlessly from camera, psp, ds, dsi, usb plug in all work no prob; yet kaiser refuses to sync even with new cables before and after activesync updates
Try a different PC if possible. Make sure Active Sync or Mobile Center is installed prior to plugging it in.
Another one
--DELETE THIS POST-- I added to it, then accidentally double-posted.
Another one
I'll add to the pile. Exact same problem. ActiveSync doesn't work, but phone does charge. Various cables used, hard reset done. Haven't yet flashed a new ROM, though. I'm using an HTC official 6.1.
Last successful run of ActiveSync was May 8th. I used System Restore on my PC to pre-date May 8th. Still nothing.
Didn't make any major installations to either the PC (XP SP3) or the Tilt on or around that date. It just...stopped working.
All other functions seemed to work normally, except that I got an alert from QuickGPS that it hadn't been updated since that date. I was able to update that successfully.
Same problem on my fathers tytn II... probably HW prob. Will look into it...

Yep, it's definitely a hardware issue with the Kaisers usb port not fully connecting; I pushed the usb bar in a bit with the back end of the stylus and presto! Connected immediately
I'll also confirm success by the use of a little bit of brute force. Back end of stylus, a little manipulation, connect, and the "ba-DING!" sound in XP. Wish I'd done that before a hard reset...

Looking for advice/suggestions (Please)

I recently purchased a wizard/mda (tmobile) and have run into major problems trying to unlock and upgrade the device.
This forum is a wealth of information, but I have hit some major problems.
The main problem is being unable to unlock it.I researched various posts around here, and have not been able to get activesync working.I looked at various troubleshooting info from microsoft and around here as well and have not been able to sync the phone with my computer.
I thought that perhaps it may have something to do with the version of xp I have installed, after spending many hours (25+) trying to get it to work.I then tried on another couple of comps and still no luck.
I am beginning to suspect that the phone itself has a technical problem.I seen the workaround for transferring cab files between the comp and the phone, and am hoping that once I have a mini sd card there is some way to upgrade wm5 on the phone. Can I unlock the phone without syncing it, using a different technique?(perhaps bluetooth or ir?)
Looks like I will have to unlock the phone using an unlock code, without syncing to the computer, but I am looking for any and all suggestions that may help out. I even tried attaching files and emailing them to myself, but wm5 doesn't support attachments.
Throw a dog a bone, before he buries this phone!

Im not an expert into this - all I can give you is couple of general ideas - maybe something you already knew but I'll give it a try
IMHO flashing via BT or IR can't be done or could be very risky.
Did you try hard reset? No change? Did you try hard reset and then skip installing those cabs that are installed automatically after HR?
You could try to download software WM5Storage into your htc, install it, activate and then you can access your phone as USB mass storage device from your PC. I've used it with my SD card only but it looks as it could use internal memory of your phone too. With this you can check if the data can be transfered via the mini USB.
Does your PC see the phone? Saying something like "installing new device drivers" or something like that. Check device manager.
Can you charge the battery in your phone from usb?
Btw I can't remember exact process of unlocking/flashing - is it really necessary to have synced the device before unlocking/flashing?
Following up.....
Thanks for the ideas, MuF123.
Some time has gone by.....
I tried the hard reset, and that didn't make a difference.
I was able to sync via bluetooth using a friends laptop, but was unable to sync via usb on the same computer or on my own.
I installed WM5storage and my computer doesn't see it as a mass storage device, even though it charges the phone via usb.
I am looking at this:internal error 2356 activesync.cab that comes up when I try repairing activesync, but it was a dead end the first time around.(maybe the answer is deeper there somewhere?)
I really like the phone alot, i think i will try picking up some external memory, and see if i can't use one of those unlocking services to get it up and working with a local cellular provider.
Thanks,
Nacho

Pc wont recognize captivate

I bought a Captivate with rogers on 2.1 update 1 today and when I connected it to my PC it wasn't recognized, installed the drivers and it's still stubborn. I booted into Ubuntu 10.10 and still same problem! I can't stand it it's driving me crazy! there's no reason why it should be doing this but I can't make it work!!! Please someone help I am really desperate
There are several reasons this could be happening. A search will come up with all of them. For me, it was the USB port on the computer. It didn't like the remote ports. Once I plugged into one of the ports directly off the MB, works everytime.
You might never get it to work
I've been reading these posts and trying suggestions since I got my Captivate back in August. I still have not been successful in getting any kind of reliable connection between a computer and my phone. This is my second phone and I have tried 5 different computers. One of the computers was tried with Win XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7. Nothing seems to get me a reliable connection. I hope you have better luck. I get a wild hair every now and then and spend a few more pointless hours trying to make it work but to this point nothing is working. I've tried Kies, Kies mini, old drivers, new drivers, 32 bit drivers, 64 bit drivers, etc. NOTHING HAS WORKED. I've managed to be able to mount my drives and copy files occasionally but no kind of sync where anything is automated. Also I have found nothing that can get me any sort of contact or calendar sync with Outlook. My work prevents me from putting everything into Google mail and syncing that way so I'm just out of luck with a phone that ATT told me I could sync with Outlook. Maybe Froyo will fix this or else I have to wait my year until I'm eligible for an upgrade to get a phone that actually works properly (ie, non Samsung), although I have to wait for OTA Froyo since Kies won't be of any help in upgrading anything!
This is the best drivers i found to make it work on my Vista box.
http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/MOBILES/Samsung/Samsung-Galaxy-S-USB-Driver-for-Windows-x86.shtml
The USB drivers from Samsung's website seem to be pretty bogus.
If the ones from the link above don't work you can go here - and download the USB drivers for your OS there. I have tested both and they work great on my computers.
And... if your running Vista - IMO That is Issue #1

LOL I refused to run it. For some reason my systems refused to run it and I always ended up going back to XP.
Now with Windows 7 - I think Microshaft got it right (as close as they can) and its what Vista should have been to begin with

Usb debug is only for adb to work. You can still mount/detect the phone without it. Windows should detect it as a usb mass storage .

Thanks for the response. I've had debugging turned on and off. Neither seemed to make much difference. I did find one interesting thing the other day though. I uninstalled all Samsung software and drivers. Before I tried any kind of reload I used a registry cleaner to clear out any remnants. It seemed to act a lot differently when I reloaded things and I actually managed to sync my calendar and Contact List although not with Kies or any Samsung software. I used a program called MyPhoneExplorer. It takes a while to figure out but seems to work well if you have a decent phone-computer connection. It only worked once though and the next time I plugged back in there is no connection. There was a time when I was hopeful that Froyo would fix this but now I'm doubtful that the Captivate will ever get Froyo, at least from Samsung or AT&T.
I totally do not understand this phone when connecting to my PC. I am sooo sick of this thing not being recognized and trying to connect with Kies!!! I would run better odds playing Russian Roulette at being the big winner!! What other options do we have to get our phone to connect so we can load an unload our media. I dont have the space to load my whole library and wouldnt want to wait the years it would take to load it :|
I can't connect my Captivate to my Windows PC or Ubuntu through the USB cable that came with the device. I think it's the cable that's short circuited resulting in no connection so I will get a cable asap. My temp solution was an 8GB microSD but even now i tried rooting with the update.zip file and I had no luck I don't really care if my phone connects to the computer as long i have a microSD card reader and rom manager too bad for my 16GB memory but I can't even root! I hope they fix the update.zip file. This phone has killer hardware. It's such a shame how it's being brought down...

Have you tried connecting to a USB port right off the MB? I know my remote USB ports would charge the phone but were flaky when trying to connect to my computer. Moving to the MB USB port fixed all my problems. Connects everytime now.
Well I only have a laptop and I tried all the ports...
If you truly think the USB cable is bad - then I would suggest going back to your retailer your purchased it from and get another one.
Also - if you want to ROOT your phone - you should still be able to. I would download the CLShortFuse's 1 Click Root application. Then you can copy the update.zip from inside that application's folder and copy it to your internal SDCard like you have been doing then flash as normal.
It will not include SU or Busybox I think though - or enable sideloading of applications. You will still need to d/l ROM Manager and get busybox that way.
I wouldn't recommend flashing ROMS to your phone until you can get it to recognize though. Please tell me you haven't installed kies? And I would go to the Q&A sticky - it has the 1-click root app as well as the USB drivers I recommend installing to have your phone recognized.
I install the usb drivers for xp and never had an issue with 2 home laptops and 2 work laptops. Wife's windows 7 machine i did not even have to install drivers and it recognized it without issue. Make sure you are using the cable that came with the phone as i have had issues with other micro usb cords that did not come with the phone.

Thanks alot!
If all you want to do is copy media you can get by without Kies I believe. All you should need is a proper driver setup for your computer. Once drivers are loaded and recognizing the phone all that should be left is to mount the drives on the phone. Just be sure to have the phone in "Mass Storage" mode instead of "Kies" mode. I can't get Kies to work for me but from what I understand the only real benefit of that is for doing upgrades, I might be wrong though since it doesn't work at all for me.

Exactly I've read on Engadget that 2.2 finally came to Canada but kies won't work for me either all I want is to root my god damn phone on 2.1 update 1 to get the gingerbread ROM from supercurio as soon as it's stable but I can't even root
