Question - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey guys I have to ask something, I just lost my signal is there any way to know if they are working in my area? I know is not my phone, cause i have another sprint phone and is roaming as well...the signal goes and comes

Another sprint user, or call and ask if there is an outage in your area.
First perosn you talk to should be able to answer that.

restart after loss in service?

I just took a trip for the weekend and much of the area i travelled thru didnt have cell service. However I found that when my phone was in a cell service area it wasnt making calls. here is the scenario...
driving down the highway, my cell isnt finding a signal, it sets itself to the airplane setting & thus calls cant be made, my wife's curve has a signal & she's on the phone, so i turn the phone back on & try to make a call...it ends my calls before it rings. i try to wait to see if its a timing issue, 10 minutes lapses, wife still on phone, i try to make a call, no go.
i had to cut my phone off & cut it back on to get the phone to work?? it recognized a signal as i had 1 bar of signal reception on the tilt and my wife's curve had 2 bars. but it'd never start a call. i'd see that it said calling, 3-5 secs later it said call ended...
anyone have any idea as to why this would happen or why i'd be required to restart everytime i leave a cell service area & reenter one? any fixes? i searched for my title & found no results...
Are you on 3G or GSM when it fails? If it's on 3G, you could have that problem, try to switch to GSM only and see if it's better.

well as far as i know we're not getting 3g until may...but i do drive towards a 3g network, so it may have been switching over to 3g prior to driving into the back country?

what rom are you on? the 162 htc/att rom? bcuz i know now i am having a problem i wasnt before. because there is a building downtown that doesnt get cell service in it, and i frequent that building. i never had the issue on my original tilt on the 158 (i believe) rom, but this rma came w/ 162 rom & now im having the issue in that bldg too. which goes to further prove its not the 3g network theory. its just a matter of losing signal & then getting signal back where i am experiencing the issue.
thanks for any help.

Today was day one with the new tilt and it didn't have the problem. However, my old one wasn't consistent one way or the other, either, so I'll have to give the new one some time.
(work for at&t) New phone will not fix this problem, nothin wrong w/ phone. U need to go to a local corp store and change the SIM and get someone who knows what they r doing so they put all of the SIM updates while plugged into the comp. OTA updates will never work w/o these initial updates.
I have an issue where i'm connected to the net (GPRS/hdspa) and occasionally i will lose the connection whislt the connection is still active..
No internet functions will work even when i reconnect
I have to then restart the phone to be able to use the internet again
Not the same issue but something similar
Same problem here. It is not possible to establish a 3G connection. If I set the BAND in the telephone Settings to GSM the connection is stable. If try to establish a 3g connection all further connection trys will fail.
I already changed my Kaiser, it did not help.
Update:
T-mobile will sent me a new sim card. Hope this will help...

GPRS dead - send it back?

I have had my Tilt (8925) since May, and now it won't connect over the GPRS network any longer. It still works on EDGE and HSDPA, though. Problem is, GPRS is still very prevalent in the areas I frequent, so I am screwed much of the time for nework access.
Anyone else ever had this happen? How do you explain it to the geniuses at ATT's customer service?
Inquiring minds want to know.
have you had all the info reset for att?
Yes, and she was able to watch my phone come and go from the network as it switched from H to G and back again.
well, take it to a totally different location, if that doesn't solve the problem then hard reset the phone. If no go there, then replace it.

t-mobile questions

I picked up the tilt and heard that it doesn't do T-mobile 3G. I live in a VERY covered 3G area and never get it, I'm always on the edge network. when I was on vacation, in another VERY covered 3G area, for one whole day of the 4 I was there I was on 3G all day. my emails and web were way faster. the funny thing is I never left a 2 mile circle and always covered the same spots, but for one day I had 3G and have never seen it since...
so can the tilt be on 3G on the t-mobile network? I know I wasn't roaming cause I cannot roam at all it is not allowed by my sim via the account type I have with t-mobile. Also when I was there I noticed an H showed up once but didn't stay for long and never came back. But right now I am smack in the middle of a fully covered 3G area at home and no 3G, it never even tries...
thanks for any answers.
No. It can not do the T- Mo 3G. I don't know why it would give you 3G signal if you aren't able to roam (are you sure that you didn't just roam on ATT network in that area). I am waiting for the Wing II (HTC Rhodium/Tungsten/Touch Pro II) it will be on T-Mo 3G and it is supposed to come out on July 22 (2 days before my b-day). Maybe you should check it out on another part of this forum.
T-mobile uses a dif radio frequency for their 3g. I think the wiki explains it.
yea I checked out all kinds of info, and knew before hand that it didn't do 3G. I did call t-mobile support and they confirmed that I cannot roam as my sim is locked to t-mobile do to having the flexpay type and the sim is locked to t-mobile only. That is what is weird cause if I try and force ATT with my phone here, it simply will not pick it up. Also the rep said my account showss no roaming at all being used and it actually shows locked on that account page. So I am baffled by this and know I was on t-mobile since I have the 5.99 zone plan and use the proxy hack, and it still used the proxy. Totally confused....
BTW I just got the tilt for a steal and my GF would be real pissed if I asked for a new phone this close to getting this one.

Constantly Roaming, Charges?

I recently bought, unlocked, flashed, and activated my Diamond and went onto the Fido network. Phone works great, but constantly says I am roaming. I have searched through other topics on this board, and, have found people having the same problem.
The icon itself doesn't bother me at all, but all the topics I could find only discuss hiding it.
My concern is roaming charges. I am in my home area, therefore, I should be using a tower near by, and I should NOT be charged roaming?
Is this correct? Has anyone on fido every been charged?
Thanks
prices of roaming depend on the agreement between your network and the network you're roaming on so there is not global answer to your question
This is something which may work for you:

Thanks for the help. I actually ended up calling Fido on my landline and making a phone call with my phone to see if there were roaming charges coming up. He said no, so we'll see when I actually get my bill if I have hundreds of dollars owed, lol

SGS Captivate Got Signal. Can't Use Network

So almost two months of owning my Captivate that I got from Rogers (BNIB from Kijiji) and I noticed that at a certain area in my school, I have 3/5 bars of signal yet I can't seem to text/call and use the network. Is this a network problem or phone problem? Or can it also be my SIM? My SIM card is pretty old. However everything was fine when I use my Sony Ericsson W715 in the same area.
I should add that my friends on the same network beside me, they can text/call fine, which leads me to believe that this is a phone problem. A poster over at Howard Forums suggested network congestion, but it seems impossible because everyone else can use their phone fine.
I've tried different modems too, but it doesn't help. It's like my Captivate doesn't want to work at certain areas of my school.
A couple of people are getting the same problem as well where the phone reports good signal, but they can't use the network at certain locations. We're starting to think that this is a phone problem...

I noticed this same issue in fringe areas. I have ATT and in southern Utah they are quite weak. I wonder if the bars/signal are actually from another provider like T-Mobile or some off brand like alltel or something. Utah has a bunch of small providers in rural areas.
Specifically in my case I go up in the mountains at Brianhead Ski resort and i get 2 or 3 bars yet I cannot send texts or call. Verizon has coverage there and I heard rumor T-mobile had a microcell or something on one of the lodges.
Could the signal be from another provider that ATT doesnt have an agreement with? Or in the OP's case some provider besides his own?
That's highly unlikely though, the idea of my phone roaming onto another network. It'd show if I'm not on the Rogers network.
Plus, a lot of people use Rogers, such as my friends who are able to make calls and send texts when they are next to me while I can't at school.
Just an update. Switched to a new SIM card, no go. Got a reconditioned Captivate, still got the same problem. As always, everyone else around me could send and receive text messages fine.
Same thing happened to me twice today with the reconditioned Captivate, at two different locations. As usual, it happened to me at Ted Rogers School of Management on the 8th floor where it showed I had 3 bars and a 3G connection. However when I tried to send a SMS, make a call, or browse the web, nothing worked. Everyone else around me was fine though, so I still can't determine whether it is a network or phone problem. I already switched the SIM out for a new one too.
The 2nd time it happened to me today was just outside of the subway station. Keyword is outside. I wasn't underground. I had full bars, but again I couldn't use the network.

I still think it that in some cases our phones pick up out of network signals and show great signal strenght.
Maybe not in your case since others are working fine around you, unless they are bone stock maybe, and you have obviously improved your phone.
I did a bunch of expeirmentation with my phone, flashing different modems and such, trying to get an ATT signal at Brianhead Ski resort in Utah.
I could get the phone to show great signal on the bars and in settings/about phone/status but the service state and network would say unknown or unavailable, somthing like that. (maybe check those when you cant get out?)
I have since given up and reflashed so many times I dont remember which modem worked to give me good signal of networks I couldnt use.
I do know it was frustating as hell to have full bars and be unable to call or send texts.

Thanks for your insight. The other people around me have other phones, such as Blackberry, Samsung Wave, etc. I even tested it with my old Sony Ericsson W715 and my friend's Samsung Wave at pretty much the same location (a feet or two away from me) when I can't use the network, and everything is fine so it most likely is a phone problem.
When it shows I have signal, it also shows the service state, like I'm on the Fido network and such.
