t-mobile questions - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

I picked up the tilt and heard that it doesn't do T-mobile 3G. I live in a VERY covered 3G area and never get it, I'm always on the edge network. when I was on vacation, in another VERY covered 3G area, for one whole day of the 4 I was there I was on 3G all day. my emails and web were way faster. the funny thing is I never left a 2 mile circle and always covered the same spots, but for one day I had 3G and have never seen it since...
so can the tilt be on 3G on the t-mobile network? I know I wasn't roaming cause I cannot roam at all it is not allowed by my sim via the account type I have with t-mobile. Also when I was there I noticed an H showed up once but didn't stay for long and never came back. But right now I am smack in the middle of a fully covered 3G area at home and no 3G, it never even tries...
thanks for any answers.

No. It can not do the T- Mo 3G. I don't know why it would give you 3G signal if you aren't able to roam (are you sure that you didn't just roam on ATT network in that area). I am waiting for the Wing II (HTC Rhodium/Tungsten/Touch Pro II) it will be on T-Mo 3G and it is supposed to come out on July 22 (2 days before my b-day). Maybe you should check it out on another part of this forum.

T-mobile uses a dif radio frequency for their 3g. I think the wiki explains it.

yea I checked out all kinds of info, and knew before hand that it didn't do 3G. I did call t-mobile support and they confirmed that I cannot roam as my sim is locked to t-mobile do to having the flexpay type and the sim is locked to t-mobile only. That is what is weird cause if I try and force ATT with my phone here, it simply will not pick it up. Also the rep said my account showss no roaming at all being used and it actually shows locked on that account page. So I am baffled by this and know I was on t-mobile since I have the 5.99 zone plan and use the proxy hack, and it still used the proxy. Totally confused....
BTW I just got the tilt for a steal and my GF would be real pissed if I asked for a new phone this close to getting this one.

Kaiser keeps switching from 3G to Edge

A friend of mine just purchased the Kaiser to be used on the at&t network. He lives in a 3G area in the USA and for some reason, his phone will not hold the 3G connection. It wants to switch to Edge. Is there a manual setting to stop this from happening or a new utility to enable/disable certain connection. Is this normal for 3G to do this. Any information I can pass on would be greatful.
Thanks
I think it's an indication that 2G is stronger than 3G in your area. My Kaiser always hold 3G connection all the time where I live. You can "manually" force 3G. Here is one the many ways to do it: on Windows Start menu, go to "Setting" then "Phone" (on the "Personal" tab), click "Band" tab, then use "WCDMA" for network type selection (default is "Auto")
Thanks for the help. I'll pass it on.
While the Kaiser is my first ppc type phone and I cannot claim to be expert I do think that this is a normal reaction of the phone to what networks are available.
I live in San Jose Ca. and must, perchance, move up and down the peninsula in the normal course of work and life.
I see my Kaiser switching from Edge to 3G to unnamed all up and down the peninsula. It is best for 3G in the cities and worse up in the hills -as one might expect. I also get the best 3G connections in the evenings and night vs. the daytime when, I assume, more 3G users are taking up bandwidth.
It is unfortunate that where I live is an Edge (during the daytime) area though I am paying for the 3G data plan.
3G issues with the TyTnII
Hello all:
I post on the AT&T HTC forumn and had this thread sent to me by another poster there.
I also have a TyTnII newly aquired from MobilePlanet on Weds. I am having the same issues with 3G. It briefly flashed the G icon on boot up then switches to Edge with all 5 bars. I've tried the manual mode fix, no luck. The wcdma gets no signal and the gsm goes back up to 5 bars same as auto.
Then theres the inability to register my serial # on HTC's EU site. Says SN is invalid... MP has had several reports of EU devices doing this.
I'm in the US, NorthEast NJ area. And in the middle of a known 3G area.
Bill
Can anyone help Bill out? How many of you CAN use 3G on the USA at&t network without a problem? He's trying to see if it's a setting issue or a phone issue. I'm not in a 3G area so I can't help him here.
Thanks

I get a 3g signal when I go into Philly (I live about 45 minutes outside the city) It holds it just fine as well. Is it possible you just have weak 3g coverage where you are? I actually shut off the 3g on my phone as I have no 3g coverage at work or at home and the 3g connection discharges the battery in a hury.
I'm on AT&T as well.
Oh - BTW - I also can't register my phone with the eClub either. I sent an Email to the HTC Webmaster but have not had any reply in 3 days. I'm not too confident in HTC's support.

3G not working...

Briefly, I have had a few issues with my device. One was the inability to register my S/N on HTC's EU site. Several other reports of this have surfaced as well. That is being addressed through MobilePlanet's very helpful rep James. Glitch on HTC's database apparantly. The second, as Dan mentioned, is my phones total failure to see the 3G network. I now know why...
I spent almost an hour on with AT&T's data support and the guy said the reason was the failure of my devices IMEI# to register the devices hardware. There seems to be no hardware profile for the TyTnII ansd therefore it comes up as an "unknown device" in their provisioning system. I confirmed this on my visit to the store this afternoon as the rep there showed me the screen and sure enough, it comes up as unknown, and the setting for this selection is GSM, not UMTS which all of their 3G phones are set to. He said, your device "does not exist" in a valid profile as a UMTS device and therefore will never be able to see a 3G signal even if I was sitting under a 3G tower... He showed me his phone which is 3G capable and id did indeed have UMTS and a valid hardware profile.
So, looks like I am SOL for 3G unless MP can help. Not happy tonight... I am going to speak with MP again tomorrow or Monday, and see what they suggest, if this can't be solved, I may be returning my new baby. 3G was an important selling point 4 me as I do a lot of data xfers.
BTW, I'm in NorhtEast NJ within a known 3G area. area.
hummmmmmm??? granted i'm in dallas, but, i'm on AT&T and i just popped my 3G SIM (used for a 3125) into my Kaiser and i get 3G with no issues. i would have tried the ATT guy's SIM in your phone (and vice-versa) to validate the profile issue. you didn't mention this, but i assume you have a 3G SIM , correct? i'm interested to hear if other ATT users have had this problem....what about trying a new SIM or one from a friend that has 3G?

Yes, that will work. Per AT&T data support, since mine is an unlocked unit with an IMEI# not in ATT's system, it will never be able to do 3G. Everyone that did get it to work just switched out their existing 3G capable sim to the new Kaiser. I came over from Verizon, so unless I buy a cheap 3G ATT phone, I'm out of luck.
Switching the sim for a new one did no good, same IMEI#, so no help.
Bill
I made the mistake of giving at&t my new IMEI# when I went from the 8525 to the Kaiser. Now my phone profile is set to GSM only since it is an unknown profile in there system. I will either have to buy a cheap 3G phone and use that SIM and IMEI# so there system thinks I have a 3G phone or return the Kaiser since I won't be able to get 3G. Right now it is not an issue since I don't live in a 3G area. hhhmmmmm

There is no need for 3G SIM card. Any card should work. I'm using old AT&T Blue SIM with no problems at all.

True any card will work. Did your old phone have 3G on it already when you swapped it?

Bill will test it tommorrow when he borrows a persons sim who has 3G. If it works then they are correct.
You got a pretty good load of BS from the AT&T guy. All you need is a 3G capable phone and the right provisioning to get access to the 3G network. Signing up for a MediaNet, MediaMax, or PDA plan should so it. YOu should NEVER give them your IMEI # unless it is an AT&T phone. Cuz at that point, if there are any issues that require deviations from their "scripted" support, they will say that's the issue. Unless you happen to get lucky and get a real technical support rep.
Just tell them you got an aftermarket unlocked Blackjack and you want the 19.99 MediaMax 200 plan. If they ask for an IMEI number, tell them that shouldn't matter. You can then make any changes to your plan online if you'd like. And that should get you access to the 3G network.
Thats the problem. Talked to several CSR and they won't change the provisions becauses we did give them our IMEI numbers already. They got us there but there are workarounds and lesson learned.

Not so -- my last two phones (Kaiser & Wizard) have been unlocked & not registered with AT&T, and I get 3G HSDPA. However, I don't have (and never have had) a data plan -- I pay $0.01 per KB for data a la carte.
I have a suggestion based on what i'm facing: try disabling the HSDPA in settings and reboot (it will ask you to reboot anyway) then see if you have 3G.

That is total BS sounds to me you dont have the right settings on your phone. Did you use the Network wizard to set things up for you? that might be the problem if you did. I have AT-T and a brand new Kaiser direct from HTC and have no no no issues what so ever with 3G or HSDPA i also think i am getting a little a HSUPA here and there
FYI and a request for some assistance
I use quite few different phones and one day my account froze on me. I had been using a palm treo 650 because my kaiser was out of battery.
when i reinserted the sim into my kaiser days later phone worked but no data no sms worked again. in any att phone all shapes and sizes. I thought it was from the treo because i used the data no problem.
its a company acccount need password to talk to csr at att.
after researching and seeing this thread I retracted my steps
the only other thing i have done is reported an imei on my account for a tilt i needed to unlock for a friend before there was an unlocker.
I believe the imei on file controls my provisions.
Provisions
the only solution to no data on phone that was working is provisioning a pit stop to a service center.
Is it possible to create a solution or is it totally a carrier fix at this point? Is there any other way to adjust provisions with out a walk in or call?
FYI
to change a reported imei number simply call 1-(916)-843-4685 and have them update your device to what ever imei you want them to have.
Note once they update the system make all your changes for rates online the only info att has is what is provided at point of sale or givin by the client
this is just some info to add

Kaiser : When 3G icon appears ATT Service is lost...

I am on the old $39.99 ATT plan the one that does not have 3G and my with an old “blue” SIM card. I have been using Sony S710a for the past two years which in fact worked fine. A week ago I have obtained ATT Tilt (HTC 8925), unlocked it so that it would read my card and started using it.
Here is the problem that I can’t solve>
Sometimes my phone loses service, completely, and I cannot reconnect to ATT Service. I have tried to find a pattern but so far I am clueless of what might be causing it.
According to my observation:
1. It has been happening in certain neighborhoods.
2. When I do find service and connect to it shows E and then switches to 3G
3. When my phone starts to show 3G it loses connection.
This phenomenon happens only from time to time. Other times I have 3G icon and everythign is fine. I have tried T-mobile card in it and there is no problem. It connects to T-mobile service and has all bars. Thereafter I have put my card into an unlocked Nokia 6300 and my ATT connection works fine. The only thing I can blame is 3G.
Please if anyone knows what this, why its happening and how I can avoid this issue let me know. Thank you.
it looks like I have got a solution...
Im not sure yet, but so far I have installed an application that supposed to keep me away from [3G]. The application that I have installed is Bandswitch. So far it only shows [E] . I have to travel to those areas where I had no service to be sure that this program works. Ill keep you updated on this issue.
go get a new sim card. ATT and Cingular towers were different so some older sim cards have trouble connecting to some towers. its only something like 15 bucks.
when i went to the ATT storeto get my tilt, even though i already had a 64k sim they still upgraded the sim (for free seince i was about to pay 400 bucks).
Its your sim card
The old sim cards don't have enough memory. Get a new one with the 3g logo on it. You should probably upgrade your service too. Or you'll get a big surprise when your bill comes.
I have the same problem here in germany with the O2 3G Network... My phone has a GPRS Connection and when the 3G Icon appears there is a total loss of connection for like 10 seconds and its back to GPRS again... End of the story (like i assumed and wrote to O2 ;P) my SIM Card is too old, new one on the way Should work for you as well, like all the other posters before me claimed
Edit: Oh and it didn't cost me one buck, all inclusive service because i didn't lose or broke my SIM Card. When it is too old to be able to allow you to use your full contract properties, i guess they pretty much have to send you a new new SIM card for free. At least here it works this way
Thank you...
The problem is that I dont have a contract and the only way for them to upgrade my sim to 3G is when i sign up. Curently I have 1000 min, nights and weekends from 7pm, free mobile to mobile, free long distance and free incoming SMS. Its highly unlikely that any one of you would give that up and pay more money for less minutes and less services. Right? Thank you. at this point i think im fine with what I have got, in addition to not needing 3G at all. by the way, i think that this program Bandswitch is doing a good job keeping me of 3G. Thank you.

I never had to 'upgrade' my sim to 3G, nor sign a new contract. I just took my old GSM SE phone in to ask about service, and they asked if I would like a sim swap to the latest.. Sure, done.
Now works fine with the Kaiser, and never did any form of 3G 'upgrade'.

Were you part of the old ATT Blue network? Cingular actually started giving out 3g cards in early 2006 in my area. I got one with my 8125 where they FIRST came out. So it's possible if you've gotten a phone since then and now that your card is already 3g...

You're right, I think it may be important to be on the 'orange network' because 3G never existed for the old at&t wireless 'blue'.
I was always part Cingular, and did go through the free-sim upgrade, but got another one when I just walked in after that.
Well I'm in malaysia, Using Maxis 3G network. I also having problem same symptoms like you guys. What do i realize sometime it give my device freeze for sometime. But the freeze just like for few second. And what do i realize when 3G appear our phone signal become weak. From full bar drop to 2 or 1 bar.
Did u guys having this issue too?
My simcard is 128k if im not mistake.
See this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=335074
Most likely the same problem. RMA ahead.
Try this on your phone settings (dialer --> menu --> options) on the network tab is network selection set to automatic? i was experimenting with my phone to see if i could get a better signal and set it to manual and choose my network but when im no a 3G connection its called 3G T-mobile and when not its just called T-mobile and on the manual list its just called T-Mobile so each time i got a 3G connection it would lose signal completely and start searching for i think T-mobile not 3G T-mobile the moment i set it back to Auto and soft-reset it worked fine again.
my phone did this at first, and all i had to do was get a new SIM. they didn't charge me a dime for it at the att store, but if they ask just tell them your phone won't connect and that it's a problem with your SIM
I have the same problem and have a new phone on the way. I already have a 3G sim card.
When you call, they'll probably make you hard reset your phone. Just a heads up.

Argh! T-mobile's down.

My T-mobile service is completely down as of 8:30pm central 11/03/09. I read an article that says that T-mobile reports only 5% of users have had their service down but from my facebook and twitter blowing up with a lot of status/tweets about T-mo's outage it seems more are affected. Just wanted to see if you guys were getting no service as well...
succs for yall...
what rom are you using? because that happened to me and i was runnin cyanogens latest, so i thought it was the roms fault, so i switched over to sensHERO 1.1.1 and everything is fine now...
T-mo's always down for me.. been roaming 100% of the time for the past 5 months lol. Luckily there's no roaming fees for both voice and data
Doubt t-mo outages do anything to roaming services...I haven't had any issues anyway
damn fa real ^^^^ needa get a new phone!.. lol...or take ya 3g off!
lol tell me about it. T-mo says Edge/Gprs is the main cost to the G1 data plan, 3g is just a "freebie" lol ya right w/e. Anyway I tether the heck out of my edge connection way out here in the boonies. and Cellular One, Alltel and Verizon are my only other options... ~$60 for a dedicated data plan OR smartphone add on.. and no 3g on any of those either.. dam I need to get back to civilization ..
You can find me on "Androids Around 2", I'm the only one in the entire state of montana LOL
yeah, i reflashed xrom thinking it was the rom...then my friend showed me on her iphone all these facebook and twitter updates about t-mo being down...
my service is completely down. no 3g, no phone, nothing. can't even call 911. only wifi.
maybe try switching to roaming and seeing if it works. enable roaming then goto network operators and select one that's not t-mo (so long as you have an international calling plan)..
just got service back...we'll see if T-mo's got some rebates lined up for us..if not...no biggie...hope it doesn't happen again...
Good to hear.
It'll probably happen again, it's happened about three times in the five or so years I've been with em usually only a couple hours or so long tho.. But I figure that's probably about average for most large networks.

[Q] Question about international use of this phone

So I have this phone (Samsung Galaxy Exhibit II 4G) from T-Mobile, I am on the 30$ monthly 4G plan with 100 minutes of talking, 5GB of 4G and Unlimited Texting. My question is since I recently tried to unlock my phone, but not sure if it was already unlocked since I purchased it through amazon and its the prepaid version of the phone, or if the sim just needs to be unlocked, whatever the case I am traveling to Europe next year and wanted to know if I can use this phone with the networks there. I just tried today going into the Select network option under wireless and networks and after searching for some time I had a choice between T-mobile and At&t and some how I acctually was able to connect to At&t even with my T-mobile sim card in it. So does this mean I can use it in Europe and just connect to networks there that way? I know its alot of money but I will fill up my account with money forsure before I go. Is it possible?
Call TMobile and tell them your traveling to Europe and you need your phone unlocked. They will probably want to email you the unlock code.
When you get to europe set up a service and drop in their sim card. The Galaxy Exhibit (Exhibit 2) specs say it will work in Europe however, for some unknown reason, some people have problems.

Thanks for the reply! and I acctually did that and its been 3 days since I called asking for the unlock code and they said they would email it to me but no luck yet..its strange as to why unlockcell.com or something like that didnt work...But i meen something is already unlocked if I can search and connect to other networks other than Tmobile right? I connected to At&t just by going to the select network operator in android settings..
I can switch between carriers believe that would just be considered roaming.
I used this exact phone, Samsung Galaxy Exhibit ii 4G, somewhat successfully in Europe last year. This was the WalMart phone that I paid to unlock. Here's what I experienced.
The first try was in England with the O2 network. I popped in their SIM card. While I got the phone and texts to work I never got the internet to work. For some reason it did not automatically download the APN information. I tried manually loading that information and it still never worked. While it seemed it should have had internet access, it showed data transfer at the top of the screen, it was so sloooooow that it was useless. I had purchased the SIM card at a place called Carphone Warehouse. They ended up lending us a phone for about a month so we could use the SIM. I would recommend trying a different carrier than O2 and make sure before you leave the store that it's actually working or that you can get your money back if it doesn't or that you can get a loaner phone. BTW: there isn't much 4G in Europe either.
In Germany I bought a Tmobile SIM card and it worked find.
In Italy I bought a TIM SIM card. Again it did not properly download the APN data. But with a little online searching I found the correct APN information, manually loaded it in, and it worked fine.
Data usage in England, Germany, and Italy is actually fairly reasonable. Don't even consider it in France. First it costs 15 euros just for the SIM card and data cost per mb is horrendous.
Be sure to go to an actual phone store to buy your card and not a tobacco shop. At least at the phone stores you can get help if you are having trouble.

Are you able to connect to 2100mhz HSPA which is the 3G frequencies used in these countries. My understanding is that the phone is triband HSPA at 850/1700/1900 HSPA and wouldn't be compatible with the 2100mhz used in Europe. There is a small overlap between the 850mhz spec and the 900mhz so it might be possible if the winds were blowing right to get a 3G signal in some European country occasionally, but that you were mostly relegated to a 2G signal and that you should absolutely avoid carriers like 3 who had no 2g licenses.

Actually it's a quad band phone.
GSmarena.com lists the full specs for this phone and they show this:
2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network HSDPA 850 / 1700 / 2100 / 1900
I was getting 3G in Germany and Italy, no problem. Sometimes, depending upon where I was, it would drop down to Edge. I have no clue why it didn't work with the 3 network other than I just couldn't get the APN right. So for England, try a different network and make sure it's really a different network. Some of the carriers have the same names but are on the same network. When you can I'd suggest sticking with Tmobile. That way you're most likely to have it work. Oh, to get the SIM cards on the continent you usually need to have your passport to set up the account. So don't forget to bring that along when you go to the phone store.
Oh, when I said I tried the O2 network I actually meant the 3 network. Sorry about that. I stand corrected. I never did try O2.
All in all it worked pretty well. Usually the plans include around 200 mb data per month. So you do have to be careful as to how much you use your internet. Fortunately many McDonalds have free wifi these days. In Germany, however, you have to have a local phone number to use the McDonalds wifi because each time you want to use it they have to send you an SMS with a daily passcode and you only get 1 hour per day usage.
My understanding is that Europe used Band I HSPA (2100mhz) and that 1700/2100mhz was "Band IV" and something different:
Take a look at this Wikipedia article to see where I am coming from:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UMTS_frequency_bands
I used this phone last month on a trip to Brazil with a local carrier, without any problem at all. Just like people on the thread said, you just need to call TMo and ask them about the unlock code, should be on your mailbox by next day. If you didn't get it, call them, 611, and use the option 9 to call straight to the operator, and tell them that you are traveling next week. However, to get the unlock code, you have to be using the phone on TMo for at least 3 months, or have someone that has a plan that has been active for such period.
Hi there my friend!
I went to US last month and brought one of this with me. I had to unlock it through an internet service because TMo SMS with unlock code never arrived – even though I called Costumer Service when I was at the US.
I can confirm that my cellphone worked with both 850 and 2100 frequencies. These are the two ones we have here in Brazil – actually, one of the operator uses 850/2100 and all other use 2100. I have one SIM of each operator and I tested them all with my SGE4G.
One little remark that I feel I should make although I almost know it does not matter: I never tested them with stock ROM since I flashed custom and AOSP since day one.
In Europe I used just the stock ROM. I hadn't even used the phone in the US at all so it didn't have any updates either. The only thing I did was unlock it. As I said it worked fine in Germany with Tmobile. Fine in Italy on TIM once I got the APN right. But never worked in England with 3. In England, try a different network than 3 and make sure the internet is really working before you leave the store. Otherwise you can't get your money back.
If you get the SIM at Cellphone Warehouse in England ask if you can get a "standby" phone to borrow if the SIM doesn't work in your phone. Their 'standby" phones aren't very powerful but at least you'd have something to use. You just need to return it to any of their stores when you leave.
The phone drops down to Edge when it wasn't in a 3G network. So I set up the browser to download text only, worked with mostly mobile only sites, and avoided all video. You need to do this anyway in most countries as your amount of data included in the monthly fee is very limited.
Hey,can any developers try to change the software of the radio so the phone work in asia&europe wcdma900/2100MHz
