Only the 1.5 can be rooted right now. There is a thread in the developers forum that they are using to post their results. I'm sure that when they root it they'll post in there or start a whole new thread.

Here are a couple of links that may help you out
http://lifehacker.com/5342237/five-great-reasons-to-root-your-android-phone
http://androidsocialmedia.com/developments/why-should-i-root-my-android-phone
If you were lucky enough for them to have given you a hero with 1.5 on it still, you will be able to root it now, so check your software version. Rooting gives you several advantages:
1) You don't have to wait for Sprint to get off it's a$$ to fix a bug.
2) Almost every ROM has been stripped of Sprint's bloatware.
3) Apps 2 SD is a big +. You can have a lot more apps because you are no longer limited by the internal memory of the phone.
4) Wireless tether.
5) Easy backup/restore.
The biggest advantage that is a combination of multiple things above is how fast your phone will be. Now, to be fair I will warn you of some disadvantages:
1) For the most part, you are on your own. People in the community will try to help all they can, but for the most part you need to be able to troubleshoot.
2) Technically, it does void your warranty and is not condoned by Sprint. That being said, if you have insurance you can always just pay $100 and get a new phone no matter what.
3) The reason phone manufacturers do not give you root to begin with is that you can do a lot of damage and really screw your phone up. For almost all things there is a simple fix of just restoring to a backup, except for one case: if you flash a bad radio.

I made the blunder of deleting gtalk on my captivate. When I realized I messed up I did a factory reset and unrooted my phone. I am a novice at best. Now I have a stock phone with no ability to download apps. Atleast the phone works. I think
I have found the gtalk apk. Files but my phone wont install them because they are not from the market. What can I do that will not put me.in a position to further destroy my phone? Will at&t or.Samsung be able to just reinstall all stock software? Reading the post on this site I know I am playing with things I do not understand. Any guidance would be great
You can go back to stock very easily, just follow the instructions in this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
After that you'll of course have to re-root or run SRE or what have you.
Two options:
You can run odin from a windows machine to reflash. Probably the best bet and you can try one of the newer firmware versions. From there you may want to flash sre and the lag fix for a stable and greatly improved phone.
if you have a good .apk then you can flash utb or sre over as an easy way to enable sideloading.
I realize the above mentioned thread may be convoluted and flooded with nonsense and the same questions 30 times, if you can't figure odin out pm me as I've done it before and the devs have enough projects on there plate and might not answer question that have been answered.

I am not a strong tech Guy and I obviously got over my head. AT&T is sending me a refurbished unit and since there is no physical damage it is a one for one swap. I am going to leave rooting to those who understand what they are doing
You had the .apk's, why didn't you just sideload them from your computer?
Why would you give up on trying to fix it without even really trying? It's not that hard. My mom has this phone and all I do is tell her where to go to find the directions and programs she needs and she can do it herself.

You're sending your phone back to ATT because you deleted a file??!?!??? Not to mention youre getting someone else already used handset (the refurb) that they already sent back instead of just fixing the NEW one you have in your hands?
Why give up so easy? This phone is practically impossible to break. You should try root explorer, its like a simple file explorer that actually has root access and can dig into your system files, then its easy as copy/paste.... or run one click odin, its literally one click, hence the name.
Yea I guess I am a chicken. I looked into side loading but I just ddid not want to further damage anything. These boards are overwhelming with all of the skripts and what not. I have already factory reset my phone so I starting from scratch anyway mock me if you like I deserve it
Why would you even buy this phone if you were not going to learn about how it works before you go and delete something? It it seemed that overwhelming from the start you should have gotten an iPhone as all Apple products are made for dumbed down end-users.
I offered my individual help just pm me, the board can be overwhelming I know but the reflash to stock is very simple. One step simple.
Then sre is also simple but to each his own.

Hello everyone, first post I'm an android noob, I love gadgets and cell phones, but am not computer savvy. I am almost ready to flash my first ROM onto my captivate, which is currently running android 2.1 update 1, OCLF v2.2+ Donate Version, autokiller, autostarts, and has touchwiz and Launcher Pro Plus (launcher pro is the default skin), but before I flash to a new ROM, I want to make sure I'm doing everything right to minimize the possibility of bricking my captivate. I think that is all the relevant information but let me know if there is anything else I should mention... I LOVE LOVE LOVE my captivate and I'm a teacher with more debt than income so I would really be quite sad if it bricks.
OK here's the rundown!
Clockwork Recovery
I don't really understand the different versions of Clockwork Recovery, but I know that I have *some* form/version of it on my captivate. I rooted using RyanZA's OCLF (MAJOR props to him; his app made me me fall in love with my phone/android in general) which I *think* made me get Clockwork Recovery, or maybe it was busybox. About a month ago I downloaded Titanium Backup, which I also *think* made me download Clockwork Recovery. Then I deleted TB about an hour later because at the time I didn't have any use for it (although I guess perhaps now I should get it back). Most recently I downloaded the "pro" or "full" or something version of ROM Manager (what a great app, I'm surprised something so essential isn't already part of android. I forked out the 5 bucks because, like RyanZA, the dev deserves the props if you can afford it, but nothing other than "free stuff" appears in the "download ROM" section, which sounded super convenient, and was supposed to come with the paid version... anyone know why this might be?), and I know for sure that I installed/downloaded/? Clockwork onto my phone through the ROM manager because I just did it like two days ago. --> OK I Just went into ROM Manager to look at it again and it says "current recovery: Clockwork Mod 2.5.1.2"
Anyway the reason I'm asking about this is because I remember reading a couple of different articles that said something like "make sure you have the right version of clockwork before you flash to a new ROM or you will brick your phone and you will never be happy and nobody will ever love you." However I might be thinking about busybox? which brings me to:
Busybox
To be honest I never even really understood what exactly busybox is but I think I read somewhere that, like clockwork, it said something like "make sure you have the right version of clockwork before you flash to a new ROM or you will brick your phone." I do not know if I have it on my phone or not, much less what version.
OCLF v2.2 Donate
So I am going to undo the lagfix, but not undo the root that came with the OCLF app that came with the app because I need it to stay rooted. Is this a problem? I switched the scheduler back to "cfq" because that was what it used to be, but I used "deadline" before I started planning the ROM flash. Fun fact: I have no clue what any of that means, but boy did it make things speedy
Which ROM?
I know this has been asked before and I know it comes down to preference, but given the information about the current state of my phone, is there a particular ROM that you would suggest? If that doesn't make sense, what I mean to say is, does anyone know if, for example, people who have at any point used a lag fix are predisposed to bricking their phone during a flash, or if people who run Clockwork Recovery can't use ROM x?
The biggest things that concern me are 1. stability 2. that the ROM is still supported 3. froyo 4. easy sync/integration with everything google (mail, maps, calendar, etc). I like a clean, elegant look and feel, but I imagine I can skin whatever ROM to my liking. I am leaning towards Cognition, simply because I seem to read that one the most often.
Thank you for any help, it is greatly appreciated
Any other advice out there or links to good guides would be great too

Make sure you can do the 3 button thing to get into recovery or download modes. As far as I know that's the only way you can really 'brick" your phone. Some cappy's can't do any 3 button combos from power off. This is bad as you can't get out of the loop into recovery. DesignGears has a post about this, with a fix if you have this issue. Find it, Read it, Know it. And stuff.
Get the androidSDK and learn about abd. Sometimes this can get you out of trouble when nothing else can. There are tons of references to it in xda and google will get you a ton of reading material. Beyond a single post in scope to explain that one. Here's a start: http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/adb.html
Familiarize yourself with Odin and Odin One-Click. Not sure where to point you there as I found my info slogging through the cognition beast...err... thread. Pretty sure you can find a couple threads by DesignGears in development that will get you the programs and get you started.

Damn it's a good thing you said that. I just tried it to make sure that I could go into recovery mode... I always assumed that I could...
I seem to be one of those people that can't go into recovery mode using the three button press method. What's worse is that I have a mac so I (think) I can't use odin either.
Does this mean I can't fix my phone is it soft bricks while flashing? I can't take that risk...

Dang. That sucks. Did you look for DesignGears thread on the 3 button issue? There's another one another guy posted but I don't remember who.
No Odin is bad yeah, if you soft brick. You can look at Heimdale (link to it on the Cognition DL page here). But it sounds fairly complicated. Might be fun just to figure it out and seein' as you're on mac it may be your only option. No idea where to send you to learn how to use it tho, just know that it can be used on a Mac.
Good luck to ya!

Did you honestly try a search here? I mean just looking down the list of threads I can count 5+ related to your question with answers. But let me humor you here. What version is your baseband? The last three letters. If they are MJ5 then Google Kingo Root and use it. If they are anything else then you will need to look for the Da la verga method.
To find your baseband go to settings, general, about device.

Exactly. Rooting for no purpose other than to be rooted (which won't do anything for you if that's the only reason you're doing it) is throwing your warranty away for no reason, even if you don't damage the phone.

So you root your phone for no reason other than to be able to say "I rooted my phone", then you unroot it.
Net result? Five minutes of your life that you'll never get back.
Maybe I'm missing something here, but why would anyone want to waste effort doing something that makes absolutely no difference once it's done? Is there some kind of thrill in having a rooted phone that I missed?
I also used Kingo. it was a no brainer...

I rooted my Galaxy Precedent (the hard way, with adb), just to be able to feel as if I was in a Linux environment, not having everything fenced off from me. I must have also put about a dozen different ROMs on that thing. Tried lots of iffy apps too. But for $40? Not much of a loss if I could never get it working again. (It still works, I just don't use Sprint any more. And for what a used Precedent is worth, I'd rather keep it.)
My N3? Tried Kingo, just to see if it worked. Undid it a few minutes later. I can't think of anything I need root for. Not even TiB. I have all my apps backed up, and my data isn't anything like "deathless prose", so if I lose track of my Solitaire game, I won't lose any sleep. Documents, scans, pictures - all backed up off the phone.
My only "deviation from the norm" is that this phone WILL NOT get updated to 4.4x until the OTA's been out for a few months, and no one screams that it ate their phone. I don't want to be like the people with S3s who jumped on 4.3, only to have expensive mp3 players. And if KitKat turns out to be as thrilling </sarcasm> as I've heard, I won't even bother then. About the only thing I can't do with the N3 is watch live TV, and that's my current cab;e company's fault - I could before I moved and had to change companies.
But root? Not until something comes along that I really need, and that needs root. (There's even a non-root replacement for wireshark.)
OK, I'm going to start by saying I know pretty much nothing about rooting and I may come across as a paranoid conspiracy nut, but here goes.
I recently bought a Note 3 on Swappa. In the description, the seller said that he had removed all of the AT&T Bloatware, but the phone was not rooted. He also stated that a system reset would restore the AT&T apps. Well, the first thing I did was a system restore, but the AT&T apps were still gone. Not that I care about the apps really, but it seemed weird.
Today, I downloaded the "Root Checker" app on the Play Store and it told me that my phone was, in fact, rooted. I also downloaded SuperU and it verified that as well. I've also gotten Titanium Backup (Root) and it shows I'm rooted.
I posted a message on my sale page at Swappa mentioning this, but the seller is adamantly denying that the phone is rooted. He says they use their "own process" to remove the bloatware.
My question in all of this is is this: Is this something I should be concerned about? The seller seems less than honest about the phone being rooted. He is a "trusted seller" which is one reason I bought from him, but I'm super paranoid that there might be something on my phone that I'm unaware of. (a keylogging app, etc...) Is there any way to tell this? How do I go about truly returning my phone back to its original state? I system reset didn't unroot it.
Any advice from people out there much more knowledgeable than me about this?
EDIT: well, I took andygev35's advice and restored back to factory. However, I enjoyed playing around with the things that being rooted allowed, so I re-did it. A huge waste of time? Maybe, but at least I have some peace of mind over the whole thing now. Thanks to everyone!

Thanks, and holy crap - just glancing at that it looks like a total pain in the ass. This is why I never bothered to root in the first place. Do you think I'm being too paranoid? Or is is worth doing all this?
It's actually quite simple. I know it may look overwhelming at first glance, but there's really nothing to it. Basically the easiest method is to use the all-in-one file. Just download that, put your phone in download mode, plug it into your computer, run the Odin program, place the all-in-one file in the AP slot in Odin and click start.

Why wouldn't anyone want access to the root files in THEIR phone ???
You have root access to your PC or Mac, why would anyone want a provider to lock down their phone making things inaccessible.
You're not renting the phone, it's Yours (always try and have root access if possible).

I agree it's probably nothing to worry about, but if he's anything like me, any doubt I have will always be there somewhere in the back of my mind nagging at me [emoji15]. Restoring wipes out any of that doubt.

I guess what bugs me the most is that the seller INSISTS that it wasn't rooted, when it clearly is. Its a "methinks he doth protest too much" situation. If he just owned up to it, I'd be less paranoid. If he can't be honest about the obvious, it makes me worry about the less obvious.
I've learned a little, and I'm kind of digging some of the options available now that I know its rooted. Considering spending this Saturday to restoring it back to "normal" and then maybe re-rooting it to have some of the things that I now realize I kind of want. I'm kind of worried I'm going to funk it up though... Jailbreaking seemed to be a much easier process, and harder to screw up.
Since we now have nc2 Odin files you are relatively safe in doing a restore.

I too am a former Jailbreaker and am so glad I jumped the fence out of Apple's walled garden. I do have to say, at least Apple readily provides the latest firmware for their devices. I can't understand why AT&T won't let Sammy publish our Odin files. As @mrkhigh stated, we DO now have the Odin files (probably gained in some nefarious manner by a sympathizing Best Buy employee), so now you can safely let the experimenting begin without worry.

I'm curious to find out if it is actually a clone... The HDC Galaxy Note 3 is a damn good clone of the real thing and it ships rooted. They are pretty cheap and can fool almost anyone... If it is a clone, he might have been selling it to make more than he spent and didn't know it's rooted.
If it's not, it is possible that he either bought it from someone else and didn't know that it is rooted, or it is a stolen device.
I would call AT&T and give them the IMEI number to check that. Do not mention root or anything like that, just ask them to check it to see if it's flagged.

Pretty sure it's a real AT&T - I took it to the store and had them check the IMHO when I had it activated. I finally just uprooted and flashed the 4.4.2 stock on it (I'm learning the terminology here so hope that's right) from the first post.
The guy is a trusted seller and has sold tons of phones in Swappa. He advertises on all the Samsung at&t phones that he removes the bloatware but does NOT root the phone. But, it was.
In the end, I'm happy with the phone. Seller was less than honest about his process and hopefully he didn't steal all my bank info, haha, but the phone works great.
You have to root to remove all bloatware...

Good to know though. *cheers*
Yeah, I asked him about that and he said they "have their own process to remove bloatware" that does not require root".
Like I said, he was a little squirrely about it.

Im sure its probably because he sells a lot of devices and didn't realize the one he sold had root.
Then when he talked to u he realized that u r uneducated about the subject so he thought he would bs u.
Of course one would have to have root access to remove root files.
I still don't understand why ur making such a big fuss?
If u don't feel like u lucked out, (like the rest of us do) just send the flipping thing back!
Did you download free moborobo?
Before he downloads that app... Excuse me... Complete PC suite.
Why do you think he needs it? I haven't seen anything on XDA about it, other than from you. And most everything I find on google/YouTube is Arabic, Chinese and Japanese.
It seems you are trying to advert it to new users that are unknowing and willing to take advice from most anyone.
I can give 2 things right now that are the same thing and one of them does not require a full PC suite.
Oh... And they are well known on XDA to be safe to use.

Yeah, you're right. I looked at it but it seems to be completely unnecessary.

Excuse me but this is not an unknown app, it has been around for years and works wonderfully !!!
I have been using it since I got my N3 at thanksgiving and it works great, installs downloaded apk files in a snap, allows you easy navigation to your entire phone.Doesn't spam you. It just works great. I'm only recommending it because I have USED it for 9 months, (and you guys can't even google it?)
Since when do mods and forum gurus recommend staying away from something they have never used it, or even spent 10 secs researching ????

I was only trying to help OP out. it is a great and FREE app for rooted devices, sorry for wasting ur time OP -
(ps - I found the software while trying to transfer my contacts and sms messages from my 4s to N3, which worked perfectly and easily, (after trying other stuff). It was after that I discovered how nice it manages everything)
I have looked over several pages and have not come across anything with good solid information or facts. I have a ATT S5 G870A (S5 Active). It has Android 5.0 on it. I have several questions actually.
1. Can you root this device on 5.0? I cant find anything on an active version. If so, can you point me to some good simplified layman terms instructions?
2. If not, how do I downgrade it.
After getting to a state where it is possible to root it. What do i need to complete that task? I am looking at getting Twisted Lolipop ROM on this device (IF IT IS POSSIBLE). That is the goal anyway. For some reason that ROM sticks out to me after reading about all of them. galaxys5root.com/sm-g900f-galaxy-s5-custom-roms/twi5ted-lollipop-rom-for-galaxy-s5/[/url]
I have watched the video on that site and it doesn't give out hardly any information. I am not even 100% sure it will work on an active on ATT. I dont want to trust some kid on youtube trying to tell me how to flash my phone without knowing if it is correct or not.
I am terribly sorry in advance if it has been asked before, but there are several discussions here, and lots have been updated somewhere in the hundreds of pages of information contained within them.
Thank you in advance,
Josh.
If u have bootloader 0c5 u can down grade then root the active.
If u have bootloader 0f2, 0f3 no u can not. There's no root for those yet.

I assume it's the last 3 of the loader #'s. ? Mine says 0f3 . That stinks. Phone is a year old and still can't root it. I'll get a new phone before a root comes out...lol. Thanks for any information, or if there is another way I'd surely appreciate it. Got a super nice phone and its slower than christmas. Too much junk and fluffy stuff installed from factory I guess.

Thank you. Is there a good way to back up the entire phone that is pretty easy in case I disable something that shouldn't be? I enabled the system processes in developing menu and thy wrestling are a lot of things running and lots of red at the top (assuming that is for the processors). And I don't have a whole phone full of games installed. Facebook, messenger, snap chat, a weather app. Then a few other random apps like a steak n shake app. No games at all.
