What is AOSP? - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Banging my head at the moment trying to figure out the meaning of this ?? please help this new guy.

It stands for "Andriod Open Source Project" and it is basically the completely vanilla version of Android you see running on a lot of phones. If you're really curious, don't mind flashing something new, and have a rooted Hero, flash Darchdroid. It's a completely AOSP ROM, overclocked and JIT'd, with a couple of extras thrown in by Cyanogen and Darchstar.

excellent advice, thanks very much for the information. I love this one!!

Well, yes, that's exactly what it is, but not all of it. The AOSP is what lets us **** around with Google's OS to the extent that we do here on XDA. The AOSP is what makes Android different from iPhone and Windows Phone.

Rosie.apk with Cyanogen Rom?

Has it been done? I couldn't tell if this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532822 is compatible with the cyanogen roms or this only applies for hero roms that have been worked with thus far. Otherwise, would love to see this done if possible.
Thanks for the input.

Not gonna happen, it relies on Htc's closed-source frameworks- thus only Sense based roms can use it (and older ones at that)
p.s. Post in the correct section next time
RE:
Think it will ever be open sourced or highly doubtful?
I mean, I without a doubt love kingklick's 0.6's rom, but it has some bugs that needs tweaking out such as everyone's problem it seems... the camera and bluetooth.
p.s. - please push this thread to Dream Q&A (sorry, my mistake).

A mod will move it when they see it.
HTC wouldnt open source it unless they want it to be copied by other people which would be bad for business. The you would have hero widgets running on the liquid or droid and you get my point.

Android is open source.
Therefore the term "non-modded" really has no meaning.
Except in situations where some "file mover" gets their hands on a non-modded build and modifies it, i.e. "somedouche" takes an unmodified cyanogen build, like 5.0.7, and modifies it into "somedouchemod based on cyanogen 5.0.7".
Cyanogen started off like this, which is the reason for the "mod" in Cyanogenmod.
If you are looking for an OEM build (OEM = Original Equipment Manufacturer, i.e. HTC in this case), then I'm afraid that there is none and likely will NEVER be one.
Which is one of the many reasons why open source is such a beautiful thing.

Any decent 2.3 ROMs for the Captivate?

I had a look through the Android development section and couldn't really find anything above 2.2. My GF has a captivate and she's finally willing to do away with the carrier installed stuff.
And IF there are no 2.3 ROMs (which really doesn't make any sense because I've been running 2.3 on my DZ since the start of January), what are some of the better 2.2 ones?

Don't Forget Serendipity, great support ,frequent updates
2.3 ROMs aren't out yet.
But there are some really nice 2.2.1 ROMs, di11igaf's rom being one of them

Serendipity is the best one I've found, Mike has a great eye for design, and he and Chance have great ideas on functionality. They pay close attention to detail and update the ROM frequently with easily flashed .zips in recovery (no wiping involved unless it's a major update). It's built on 2.2.1.

Care to enlighten the masses on this? Cyanogen's been trolling (IMO) on his wiki:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S:_Flashing_CyanogenMod
"NOTE: As of right now CyanogenMod is not available for the Samsung Galaxy S family. Please check the wiki or the Samsung Galaxy S sub-forum for updates."
But then again, I suppose if you have a large amount of expertise and win in your arsenal, you could fit all of the witchcraft to the Captivate, unless I'm a complete noob and Cyanogen got a ROM hidden away that I'm not aware of.
Serindipity is one that I've been looking into. I have her phone ready to rock and roll, rooted + CWM. Just need to decide on a ROM
I find it strange that the Galaxy S lineup still doesn't have a publicly available 2.3 ROM... considering the first device to ship with 2.3 was the Nexus S. IIRC it has a near identical hardware set as the Fascinate, Captivate, Vibrant, I9000 etc.
LOVE Pargaon RC6....Great ROM! Stable, fast, and great GPS! It is 2.2.1. No 'working' 2.3 roms out as of yet!

Here's a captivate update zip. Follow the instructions on the CM forums for the initial install using the GT-I9000 rom, and then follow the update instructions using this captivate package.

As for it not making sense, The whole reason you have been able to run it is that HTC likes putting the source code up as to where we are still trying to get it from Samsung. Heck 2.2 official just dropped to day. lol
You will get 10 different answers as to some good roms. Just have a read in the threads and chose one that seems good to you.

Stock based ROM with customizable nav buttons?

I am looking for a stock based ROM, which there doesnt seem to be many of, that has the ability to change around the nav buttons. I really want to swap that recents and back button and I know we have been able to do it on AOSP based ROMs for a while now. However, AOSP based ROMs get significantly worse battery life from idle drain than the stock based ROMs on my phone at least so I would really like to find one with a stock base. Does such a ROM exist and I am just missing it?

well, if you wamt a real rom with the additions, then you have aosp as an option. real developers dont put up a stock rom because no source is provided. no source equals no building roms. some people learning how might use stock, but they dont build it, they just add add-ons to it. something like what you are looking for requires framework changes, so the rom has to be built from scratch. amyways, have you looked if xposed provides an option for you?

So Xposed works now on Lollipop? Ill give it a look. Thank you.

yea, xposed now works on lollipop. and yea, stock is only build by google. but its easy enough to add some things to it. and aosp is where all the code is provided for us to build our own roms. google dors have all the source, tbey just dump it into aosp for us.

[Q] Which is technically better: AOSP or image-based ROMs?

The reason I ask is because image-based ROMs seem to be trouble-free, even if you flash Cataclysm mod over it to get some customization w/o using Xposed.
I would imagine that image-based ROMs would be better for the device, since they are build specifically for the device. As opposed to AOSP ROMs which are built from source, then customized to work with the device.
The reason I ask is because I keep bouncing between TuPac's stripped-down image-based ROM and PureNexus.
Any thoughts around this?

theres no such thing as "customized to work with the device" for a nexus. aosp is made to work on nexus devices, period. and no, its the same exact thing technically. its like zips, they are all different. some forms compress your stuff down a little, some much more. yet at the end, they are exactly the same.
when you are flashing an aosp based rom, its made exactly for your device, period. this isnt a samsung device, which needs a modded aosp rom to run, its a nexus, what aosp roms are made for. oh, and those stock based image roms. i wouldnt consider them real roms. id consider them basic stock roms with stuff just thrown in. aosp roms they build from scratch, with the options/features built in.

Thanks for your response. I understand all that.
It seems like more can go wrong with AOSP-based ROMs since they are built and not provided from the factory image. Take Android Pay for example. It simply works on image-based ROMs but requires fixes or certain work-arounds to work on AOSP-based ROMs (flash a certain Gapps, make sure root is systemless, etc).
In my experience, and maybe it's just my device, but it seems like image-based ROMs run more fluid, but AOSP-based ROMs are faster, if that makes any sense. It almost seems like the image-based ROMs are better optimized for the device or something but they seem to slow down over time, the more the device is used.

well, first off, aosp and stock are two completely different roms. stock roms also have closed source code included, where aosp roms dont have that code included, so they WILL run differently, as two different roms should.
---------- Post added at 03:20 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:58 PM ----------
anyways, the answer to your question is really simple.. better is whatever is better for you, personally. to you, image based roms are better. for me, aosp is better.
as a real answer of which is better doesnt exist, its all which is better for you(or me).
Had you followed the rules you would know threads like this don't stay open long.
There is no best. Or better. There is only what works for you.
Most people that get a nexus device do it for the active development. Which does mean some bugs here and there, but that is the fun. In learning, finding and killing bugs. If you got a nexus for any other reason you really are not doing yourself any favors.
