my sum up is the second to last paragraph if you don't want to read everything.
i need help. i'm tired and on my last end of flashing roms. i flash at least 8 times a day a different rom to try them out and see which one is the best. so i'm coming out to ask everyone.
i don't want to really make a new thread about this but i just hate having to start all over with loading apps and getting my settings all ready.
my question to you all is which rom is the fastest rom out now. pure speed and reliable. i wanted to try the overclocked ones but not feeling to comfortable with my camera not working. i also have a garbage sd card so that doesn't help. i will get a real one soon but not for now. i don't really use my camera but you know when you get caught up in the moment and say oh look. and you take out the phone and bam"oh wait. my camera doesn't work" unless i can dual boot my hero with 1.6 with is super tiny????
i have tried all the roms already but i would like to hear from the community which rom do they think is the best.
i multitask alot where i will use the navigator and listen to music i will even go on a website and answer a texts all at the same time. i know that's alot asking from the hero but it's frustating to me when i'm in the car using the navigatoin and bam it closes on me cause i have alot of apps open.
another problem i have is when i get an incoming message using handset and trying to type on the keyboard. it is just so many words behind when i am typing and i just want a good rom that works. so if you can recommend the best fastest keyboard out i don't care about vibration but i do care about the sound. that's very important to me.
i don't want to name any roms out or call them out but i really like the ereis leak from damaged 1.1v but it is a battery leak on it that prevented me from staying on that rom....
what do you think of using the 1.6 rom that is bone stock and dry and adding stuff in it????
i need help choosing the fastest keyboard with as less lag as posible. i don't care if i have to buy it or not. i don't want to use swipe yet so i don't want to put that in the equation. i would like the fastest most stable rom here that can multiask and receive text using the handset pop up with no slow down. if anyone knows about the battery drain in the eris leak damaged 1.1beta and can fix it let me know....
thanks you so much,. i love my hero. and i love all the devolopers that spend there own time making roms for us to have the best experience posible. if it wasn't for them(there's alot. you know how you are) we would be sitting om hero's that can't send or receive mms, old 1.5 rom, buggy. battery dying in 3 hours. and alot more. i use 1.5 for about 3 days so i don't know all the problems the stock rom had but i know it's alot.

im running out the door but i wanted to respond to one thing you said. The AOSP 1.6 is a great rom, and you can reall customize it to your needs. Very fast. Im waiting for the 2.1 fully working AOSP, like you, i need camera. If you are looking to stay in 2.1, ive tried a few and found alyoious or whatever to be very relieable, stylish and fast.

honestly if you think 1.6 aosp is the fastest rom out there and you really highly recommend it i will try it out fully. i only used it for a couple minutes when trying to get the market place apps in.
what would you say is the cons about going to 1.6 from 2.1????

Cons? No lwp. (anyway, lwp's aren't great on our phones, kinda sluggish, amirite?) Make sure you flash the googlebits
ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=5195520
googlebits: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=606094
Thanks alot. i really thank you.
i don't care about live wallpaper compared to performance. i read that thread that you gave me and i have a question.
what is the difference between that 1.6 and this
unless they are the same. i will do a research on what google bits is all about....
also can i have voice navigation on 1.6 using google maps??? if not i can just use sprint nav....
question. i looked some more in that thread and saw that some stuff isn't working. i think i should try the one i have first andd see what happens right????
if you want to wait for 2.1 to come out officially, i will recommend the pancake 1.5 rom without sense. it is by far the fastest, most stable rom ive run and with autokiller set to extreme this sucker flies.
you just keep on bring more and more questions in my head.
i thought 1.5 was just completely bugged out with the problems thats why everyone lefted???
i cant find the pancake rom with no sense. i will miss it but if the performance increase is huge then i won't miss it that much. lol.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=639278&highlight=pancake
enjoy! i have had zero bugs with this rom.
question. i had 1.6 in my mind and how it is the perfect rom and you popped up with 1.5 and i'm afraid to use it because bugs it came with before.
so would you recommend this over the 1.6 that is 16mb big????
and if so then which pancake would you recommend i would like to keep sense but if no sense is ALOT faster and MUCH BETTER with battery life then i will go stock....

go with whatever you wish but ive run this rom longer than any other. i personally don't like sense at all myself so it's your choice in the long run, sense does chew up ram so remember that. there has been zero bugs that i have found and i have a ton of free ram left and great battery life. the closest ive had to the pancake rom in terms of performance is fresh 2.0d.
ok. this is what i will do. i will download pancake 1.5 no sense and keep it on my sd card.
i want to try 1.6 to get it out my head if it is good or not. if i find any bugs i will flash over to pancake. lol.
last question. is your mms good and can i use 2.1 vanilla lock screen. i really like it.
i'm so happy.
i like how you said the closes you had to your pancake is fresh 2.0d but you flashed back to pancake so i'll also put that up there but that's if i am not happy with pancake.

no vanilla lockscreen im afraid on 1.5 but there is clear ones you can get on here if you search. mms has been fine for me.
thanks man. you have helped me out a bunch. i will try 1.6 to get it out my head if it isn't good. pancake it is. i'm so happy. i wish i could rep you.
i have a question. i'm loving 1.5 performance and the battery life is great.
i'm using the sense one because the stock 1.5 was alittle bland. but the marketplace is alittle dull
so i have wondering if there is a nice 1.6 build thats very good.
i also notice that multi-touch isn't on in 1.5 unless it is the keyboard i'm using. i'm i wrong???
Hi guys,
I have a N1 and have moved from Froyo to Sense. My question, are there any Custom roms which have the best of both worlds?
Froyo features I like, Pattern unlock without having to swipe unlock first, shows charge levels when charging.
Sense features I like, Widgets, Music Player.
Is there a custom rom with best of both, or can you load the HTC apps onto Froyo independently?
Thanks in advance.
Plz ask in the q&a forum.
I don't think the Froyo Sense rom is stable yet.
I found this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=714184
It has a black bar and is Froyo. It's pretty much a hacked stock build thats not bloated but rooted and ready for hacking.

Cool, I'm on this now, liking it. Will check it for a while. Well liking the way that the Google account pulls down all your apps you have installed, can switch roms in minutes.
Its honestly all opinions my friend
That's like asking: Do you like chocolate cake? Cause I like vanilla. My mom likes carrot cake, and my dad. Well. My dad likes apple pie.

EDIT: OP: I wouldn't mess with any available sense froyo roms for awhile. Try out vanilla froyo and when good sense froyo roms are available you can check them out then.
Hey.
Do you have a AT&T version or a T-Mob version?...
If you have an At&t version could you please disable the 3g data and just enable the wifi and test if the wireless keep alive when the phone go to sleep
Thx.

Many good ROM's to try out. Just start with a ROM, flash it, test it for a few days, if you don't like it, try another.
No ROM is better than the other, is all about personal taste. Many people praise Cyanogen's work, though i admit he does a good job on his work, i prefer a ROM more closer to stock then i just take a little from others and put it in in the one i use for my own personal taste.
Hey everyone,
I am just after some suggestions on a stable fast eclair rom or other suggestion?. I figure they should be a bit more developed and stable than the froyo ones.
I have used a couple eclair and been through a bunch of froyo roms, however they seem fast after flash then a week or few days later they take forever to do anything and it is so frustrating having to wait 20 odd seconds to open a new txt message.
I have around 2000 messages and when first flashed everything runs great then a few days later its just painful.
Is there a rom that this wont happen on? any suggestions?
I would like to be able to play the occasional game if possible too
Cheers

Thats strange froyo roms never really slow down for me all though i dont download many apps or play games have you tried the official froyo ported from the mytouch? or use cyan 6.1 they both run pretty quick for me just play around with it see what works best for you and remember setcpu can help you out with speed especially for games or just stick with eclair thats what i do complete eclair 2.21
Try the official mytouch ROM, if that doesn't suffice then nothing ever will.
Thanks guys, any tips where i can find this official ported rom? i have not noticed it on the g1 forum. unless im looking for the wrong name?
is this it?

Ok, I'm a little overwhelmed by the number of nook roms out there, and I would like to know what everyone uses and why.
I've tried 2, and they all have benefits/negatives and I'm trying to figure out which to be my daily driver, while we wait for the next generation of roms to come about.

well which 2 have you already tried?
I personally use CyanogenMod 7, but that's because I use it on my Droid, and that's because it's the first ROM I found when I got my droid.
I haven't had it crash on me yet, but there was a Wi-Fi problem I had to fix through ADB. (Link) Otherwise, it's been more than good enough for a daily driver. I really haven't had experience with other ROMs. I just flashed the thing with CM7 while I was still in B&N. I would recommend a Honeycomb ROM, but that's not very "complete" yet.
Sorry I can't say much else (), but I gave my $.02.

I wasn't going to mention them so I could hear everyone's full opinion despite what I've tried and not hold back because I've tried it.
However, I don't want to be a **** so it's cm7 and HC v.4 now don't let that sway your opinions!

I was having the wifi issues to (Atleast I assume it's the same, I would just lose connection and have to reconnect pretty consistently) the thing that actually bothered me most about it was the back and menu buttons up at the top right. To small, wanted a different more tablety layout.

Oh, no the Wi-Fi issue was much worse. I couldn't get the chip to activate! At least the fix worked, though.
If "too small" is the problem, increase the LCD Density.
If you want a more tablet-like layout, you will have to deal with Honeycomb in its current state.
If you don't like the CM7 buttons, use SoftKeys or Button Savior.
(I would post links, but I can't.)
I tried soft keys, but I haven't tried button savior. and didn't know about lcd density. If I go back (which isn't in my nature with roms) I may try it out.
I'm really liking honeycomb especially as far as layout, but I would like a bit more stability. But really I Can live with whatever, the nook is really my fourth internet device and currently just a toy.

The solution is patience, then.
Wait for the Google to give us the source, and all your problems will be solved.
(Don't forget that HC is a port of the SDK emulator image.)
well I knew that, that's why I wanted to know what everyone else is using so maybe I could try some other things out... during that wait it out time
Well... if you want to try a Galaxy Tab-like experience, try this:
Install Nookie Froyo
Set LCD Density to 250
Install ADW and set the app drawer to paged.
(Continue with other minor tweaks here)
i'm rolling nookie froyo 0.6.7, but i'm going to move up to 0.6.8 soon. i like it, but i'm sure honeycomb is much better. since the bugs in hc for the nook color are still being hammered out, though, i'm going to stick with the stable froyo rom for the time being.

Yeah this is kind of the info I was looking for, trying to see which roms had what features and still had the best stability.
HC is awesome, but not yet a daily driver (unless you're the adventurous type) I have a friend who is about to buy a nc for himself and he wants me to root it for him. I have no problems with a buggy rom for me, but for him I need stable yet best.
not sure where you are getting the idea that there are so many roms to choose from.
We have stock rooted, nookie froyo, honeycomb v3 and cyanogenmod (gingerbread).
there is one modified version of cyanogenmod -- firemod and one customized nookie froyo build. thats about it as far as i know... am i missing a bunch of roms somewhere?
you can try all of them out relatively quickly and form your own opinion but if you insist....
stock rooted is the most functional option at the moment. oc to 1100mhz for speed and other tweaks. nookie froyo is second with faster overall 'smoothness' but still has some bugs to work out. third is cyanogenmod which is quickly catching up to froyo and is my personal favorite. just needs video acceleration at this point. last is honeycomb but very fun to play with.

That might be all of them, it seems a bit more for anyone walking into this dev thread, with the internal and on sdcard roms.
But seeing them listed out like this is very helpful thank you!
Is there large differences between the customized roms and their noncustomized origins?
personally id recommend rooted stock rom. Ive tried nookie froyo and honeycomb v4. Froyo was really slow. It was really frustrating browsing with it. Honeycomb is much faster than froyo but a lot of apps dont install. Stock rom was stable and I wasnt able to install just a couple of apps that I tried from the android market
personally, i'm only adventurous to the point of rooting. after that, i want stability. i don't mind staying a release or 2 behind the most recent releases just so i know the issues are being dealt with.
with froyo, i'm able to use my own launcher and customize pretty much to my liking. i still don't see all the apps i want in the market, but there are enough forum posts here and on android central that link you to apk downloads so that you can install them through adb. i've seen some fixes for this, but it seems to be an issue on both froyo and hc. hope this helps!

With my phone, I'm less adventurous, I have calmed down to where now I only put release candidate and stable cm roms.
However I got this nook for a really really great deal (100$ plus the cover) and I want to try out whatever I can (and if possible help, though I have little to none coding skills) I might have to try the froyo build out since it's technically the only one I Haven't tried based on the above list (minus the 2 custom roms)
I kinda wish there was a customized version of the stock rom.
I guess the oc kernel counts?

I actually just bought setcpu to try overclocking the kernals a little bit on my NC.
What would You customize about stock?
after flashing back to froyo i must say it is far better then I remembered.
maybe it's the newer kernels but it is fast and smooth. hardware video works which i was missing on cm7.
so i change my (current) order to nookie froyo, then stock rooted, followed by cm7 and then honeycomb. i would try them all though and see for yourself.
hi...
last night i ported honeycomb 3.0 on my G1, and was hoping for a special experience, but as tonnes of things failed to work, flashed sense hero v1.5.
i have G1 qwertz, so the keyboard response is not perfect in the rom.
i have tried a number of other roms also. ginger yoshi was nice but had some problem with my network. froyo yoshi-i didnt hoo with that for long....
cm6 was okay...
i am loving the UI of sense rom though...
also, i had bought an extended 2850mAh battery on eBay but i dont think it's performing the way i expected 4-6 hrs at max on these roms
any suggestions??
thanks in advance...
btw, my 1st Qn.....
lol even though it's your first question... there are over 100 posts of people asking the same question... and the same answer applies... depends on the flasher (you)
now you say you like sense roms, only downfall is NO sense rom, i repeat NOOOO sense rom for the G1 has a working camcorder or bluetooth... NONE!!!! lol
k now that i got that out the way...
my suggestions...
1st. my rom of coarse SenseLX (great rom and the team and i keep it up to date and add features here and there for people in need, all you have to do is ask...)
2nd.. gingerbread with sense thisrom is still in development but omg it is amazing!!! trust me just try it you will be impressed... i haven't tested it in a while because i been busy keeping my rom updated but last time i tried it my mind was blown!!!! simply amazing for a G1 lol
3rd... Magic Sense this rom is by namit1994, who was a great help in the development of my SenseLX rom, he recently ported this rom for the G1 and has been busy working on it so you should be impressed with this also if you like sense
besides those 3.. you just have to read around the forums and kinda figure out what you like most... there many varieties of sense roms for the G1, people have worked very hard on these roms so they would appreciate a simple click of the thanks button! lol as would I but yeah so good luck with your rom hunt and dont forget to thank the developers for all there hard work!!
thnx a lot
will try sense lx 1st...
wanted a gingerbread only, basically...
thnx again!!!
You can also try SuperAosp 6.4, it had been doing good for me and I am happy with it.
I'm using Froyo by Laszlo for about 5 months, that's a great and stable rom.
Cyanogen is good
Just flashed Cyanogen 7.1. It's nice, true.
is cm 7 stable??? heard it's not yet...
flashed ginger yoshi(again)...it's nice and speedy...i have problems at times regarding my network(receiving messages)...can that be because of the radio(2.22.28.25) atm...
i tried the sense roms, but they take up some amount of space making the device a wee bit slow for me cos ds looked decent though
So, CM-best?
Hi guys and girls,
Im beginner around here, so be patient with me.
So, ok, when i was reading the first reply, i was like, yes, sence is nice. Have tried some Hero rom on my G1, that was on an sdcard that i got with the phone. Putted it using rom manager on it. But then somehow i felt that those eye candy things are less important for me then nice functionality of the system.
So as i see CM is most complete and most popular rom that should be quite good. Or one of the best i guess.
But i what i am wondering. I have now CM6 on my G1. And sometimes its kind of a littlebit slow you know. So one question i have, would an earlier version CM5 for example be some kind of faster? Althou i have read on wikipedia android page that "2.2 (Froyo) introduced speed improvements with JIT optimization and the Chrome V8 JavaScript engine". And that CM6 is based on 2.2. So it kind of not supposed to be slower.
Basicly Microsoft Exchange support would be nice to have for me. Because im IT pro and it was nice expirience to have both, personal and work email on my last phone i used (nokia 5800). As i see CM5 can do that. Since exchange support is since version 2.0/2.1 as i see on internet. But then would CM5 be any faster then CM6? And is CM7 slower?
Also bluetooth and camera support is pretty nice to have. So i would rather go with CM i think then, then with SenceLX. Althou its nice to have something like that. Let's imagine if i didnt need bluetooth and camera, then i can use it i guess.
Thanks in advance,
MVG,
Nikolai
edit: or is it time to get a faster phone? Because i actually just got the G1. Because i havent found anything better with full keyboard. And BB 8520 has no GPS, and no auto focus, and no Android. So i took G1. But i guess it maybe can be better with something faster. Tell me what do you think.
sense lx looks wow!!!! pretty good...but i couldnt have it running for me as a daily use rom....i was on eclair, htc clay's super bad for almost 7 months and loved it...also tried a few froyo's which were nice....
didnt fancy cm's much....
yoshi is really good...ginger yoshi ofcourse better than froyo yoshi...
also, cos ds gingerbread is worth a try!!!
mind u, for all the gingerbreads u need to have the latest radio and spl(2.22.28.25 or 2.22.27.08 with 1.33.0013)...
if you want smoothness and functionality i would suggest a stable froyo rom, but update your radio to 2708/2825 for the extra 15mb ram hack adds some speed to the device... my personal favorite was froyo by laszlo with ezbifftest 2708 kernel but it hasn't been updated in so long so im sure there's more stable froyo roms available... i've just been busy keeping senselx up to date and currently me and maximo are building a froyo rom from source so once thats at a stable point i will reccomend it and would love some testers and opinions
THAT'S LOVELY...WOULD LOVE TO TRY THE FROYO, STABLE OFCOURSE!!!!
currently hooked to gingeryoshi
I like Ginger Yoshi also.
I see here is great info on topic.
