Do alternative home launchers kill your battery? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Seems like whenever i used helix or launcherpro now im getting a signifigant decrease in my battery life. Does anyone know if there is a correlation between the two? Seems like the alternative is running over the other so if you have live wallpaper and multiple widgets on the stock home screen that could effect it? I could be wrong... anyone know?

Do you need two launchers? Why don't you delete the one you don't use. I doubt there is any significant power drain between them. But I can't say for sure because some may use more data or any other factor that could use more power cycles.

if you have widgets they do continue to update even if the new launcher does not have them. (i.e once a launcher starts them they keep getting updates)
what I do:
1) try to install the new launcher as a replacement (overwrite the system launcher if possible)
2) remove all widgets from the old launcher if you have the new one running
not sure about the old LWP, but its better to turn that off too.

Can i for instance remove stock launcher and run LauncherPro only?
How do i go about to do that if possible?
Edit: With some experimenting i was able to. Just renamed the apk to launcher2 to replace and overwrite with adb push.

[Q] Does ADW.Launcher need...

...more Battery if i have Touchwiz on my Phone too?
And how can i get ADW.Launcher only (Replace Touchwiz?)
i used it for a day and battery was fine
i also had launcher pro and widget locker all installed but was using adw so no problems on battery
now to use it as default instead of tw launcher
just install it and press the home bottun u will get an option menu to choose to wich launcher and a use as default so
click use as default and then select adw launcher
keep in mind i dont know if u can re use tw with out reflash or something but again i am a n00b so each time i choose the launher i watn
Yea i know that, thats how it works for now. but i do think Touchwiz Home isent off. it feels like i could just change between them easy (home switcher).
I think ADW.Launcher is on and Touchwiz is kinda in the background... using my memory!
I would like to get it replaced fully (NO TOUCHWIZ)
You can do this by rooting your phone and then using titanium backup to uninstall TWlauncher.
I don't think that when you use ADW , Touch wiz remains in the background.
Yes, you are right. Even though Android system puts the inactive threads to sleep but they are still persistent in the memory. Getting rid of TW.Launcher will give you a bit more free memory but I don't see why it will change your battery backup performance. Unless you are using some funky add-on with ADW.Launcher which is running all the time in the background.
How is your battery backup without ADW.Launcher?
And yes, as Aldonski mentioned, get yourself rooted and get Titanium backup to remove TW.Launcher for good.
I need TW launcher to connect to kies....it won't with otherwise
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA App
Yes it will if you remove it completely. I connect to KIES without TW.Launcher.

Best Launcher?

In terms of getting rid of all the mobile shortcuts and bugs, which is the best launcher for the Nook? ADW, Launcher PRo, or Zeam?
Using LauncherPro here
Is it free?
I'm a longtime user of ADW and Launcher Pro. I recently switched to Go Launcher and then settled on Zeam.
I find that anytime I use ADW or Launcher pro, I get inexplicable delays and force closes way too frequently to be acceptable.
Zeam and Go Launcher run light, not heavy on features, thus faster and more reliable. No issues with slow loading or force closes at all using Zeam.
Can you replace the phone icon on Zeam? I hate having that icon that I will never use even 1 pixel of my screen.

The little thing at the bottom is at your total control. You can just add apps right to that or like that app menu and remove as needed.
Included picture for better example.
+1 for Zeam
Can configure the dock and it has gesture controls too.
Yeah I'm using Zeam now and it's great. I love the look of it, and really like the gestures (I'm using swipe up to display notifications and swipe down to show applications).
Another Zeam-er here. Very simple and functional. I keep most of my icons on the tray and the screen is fairly clean with the exception of time/battery widgets and a fun Futurama quotes widget. I guess I'm not using it at its full potential but for my minimalistic needs it works.
If I install Zeam - can I still get to the Nook "Library", Shop, Web, Settings, Extras that are normally available to the Nook Launcher?
And... Can I remove Zeam and easily revert back to the Nook's standard Launcher if I want to?

Yes and Yes They are apps in the launcher and you can drag them down to your home screen to launch them

You can also install Home Switcher which would allow you to launch the 'default' NC Home screen.
I've gone through a few available launchers and found Zeam to be the best.

[Q] Home screen cascade with stock launcher?

Is there anyway to enable a cascade home screen menu when you're already home and you press home again (like in HTC's Sense UI) on the stock launcher (or an alternate launcher that has a stock UI) on a rooted n1?
I'd really prefer not to run a third party launcher if at all possible.
I tried searching but only found results for fixing broken screens. :-\
Thanks for your help.
I'm not entirely sure what you mean by cascade homescreen menu but I doubt what you want is possible in the stock launcher. Regardless I suggest you install something like Launcher Pro for added features but above all else, for the massive improvement in speed and smoothness. It was really a night and day difference on my phone and you can make Launcher Pro look exactly like stock. It was like buying a new phone.

[Q] Launcher migration

Hi,
Is there an app which allows you to migrate screen icons from one launcher to another ?
E.g. Currently I have go launcher where I have places icons and widgets in 7 screens, if I want to try apex , adw or any other launcher then I have to re create everything from scratch which is quite painful. Specially if you want to try ICS roms, go launcher is quite boring. I would love to try other launchers but it required a lot of manual effort to migrate.
SS
Screen shots may be your only answer - but I would suggest that go launcher is a very good launcher and you may just be wasting you own time looking at others, just to revert back to what you have already,
Back up go launcher settings if you do go looking

migrating of screens from other launcher is the feature of the launcher itself.. i don't think there is any specific app for this.. I could be wrong though but apex launcher certainly doesn't support migration.. go launcher supports I think but that you are already using..
just install a new one without deleting the existing one and keep the one you like best

Launcher?

Hi All, this might be a dumb question but: If I install Nova, do I have to delete everything that came stock on the Sony launcher, like Movies, PlanyStation etc...all of the icons, widgets, etc... or do I leave them and just start new with Nova? Does that make sense? I just dont want to switch to Nova and all these widgets, icons etc from Sony still 'running' somewhere in the background. Thanks!

hahaaha a second me!
I was wondering the same thing, just for the sake of it I always remove all the icons that are on the stock launcher. Because if you think of it, it's not as if you turn the other launcher off, you're just using another one. And the difference probably won't be amazing, but it could count towards a better battery life lol. Or maybe we're just paranoid :silly::silly::good:
Thanks, ill do the same and remove them off Sony...no reason to have them out there
You don't have to remove anything from stock launcher. It won't run in the background. You can setup how many different launchers you want and switch between without that effecting battery.
Launchers like Nova don't mess with apps at all. They simply create a new skin -- a new way of seeing and accessing what's already on the phone. All the same Sony apps will still be there in the app drawer and they'll behave in exactly the same way as they would if you were using the Xperia Launcher or any other launcher (although Nova might change some of the icons for system apps like dialer, messaging, settings etc.). And if you uninstall apps through Nova they're uninstalled from the phone, period. So they will not be there even if you revert back to the Xperia Launcher.
