Hypothetical scenario..
Im using a custom ROM with a built in Home replacement/Launcher. For some reason I feel this drains my battery or chugs up my system.
I decide to use another one like say Launcher pro or ADW.
Once I set Launcher Pro or ADW as my default. Are they the only home/launcher running ?
Or do I know have 2 launchers running but one is just in the background ?
I think that even when you clear data or force stop it restarts in the background.
try this:
adb remount
adb shell rm -f /system/app/Launcher.apk
That removes the stock launcher and leeves only the replacement. Run a fix_permissions afterwards

Seems like whenever i used helix or launcherpro now im getting a signifigant decrease in my battery life. Does anyone know if there is a correlation between the two? Seems like the alternative is running over the other so if you have live wallpaper and multiple widgets on the stock home screen that could effect it? I could be wrong... anyone know?
Do you need two launchers? Why don't you delete the one you don't use. I doubt there is any significant power drain between them. But I can't say for sure because some may use more data or any other factor that could use more power cycles.
if you have widgets they do continue to update even if the new launcher does not have them. (i.e once a launcher starts them they keep getting updates)
what I do:
1) try to install the new launcher as a replacement (overwrite the system launcher if possible)
2) remove all widgets from the old launcher if you have the new one running
not sure about the old LWP, but its better to turn that off too.

Can i for instance remove stock launcher and run LauncherPro only?
How do i go about to do that if possible?
Edit: With some experimenting i was able to. Just renamed the apk to launcher2 to replace and overwrite with adb push.
If I use 2 different launchers that I switch between, will the widgets on the non active launcher still be active and use data and cpu?
This belong in Q&A forum for starters..
So before it gets removed:
Yes it will. Remove all widgets or better yet, delete the launcher completely.
Is this true if you have a launcher set to default and never open the other? I have CM6 (so ADW built in) but use Launcher Pro and have it set to default so when I boot, Launcher Pro loads. Presumably ADW never does unless I specifically invoke it so it's not gonna be using memory until I do, correct?
You can delete ADW from CM6 with Titanium Backup. I use Launcher Pro on CM6 and that's what I did.
Hi guys, i have a question for you. How can i set as Default ADW.Launcher instead of the Default Android Launcher on Nexus One? Android don't show me a choose. Where i have to go in the Phone to set as Default Launcher ADW? Thanks

When you press the HOME button, it doesnt ask you? Goto Menu-Settings-Applications-Manage Applications-click on ADW Launcher and Clear Default button. Then hit the HOME button again. Hope that works...
Rename ADW.Laucher.apk to Launcher2.apk
Code:
adb remount
adb shell rm /system/app/Launcher2.apk
adb push Launcher2.apk /system/app/Launcher2.apk
Easiest way is with a program called home switcher but you can also reset it in the android settings menu.

Clear Default
it almost like SiNJiN76 said except you should clear default for the application that currently have the default (I assume the android default launcher), so find it in all tabs in applications and clear the default.

hello there everyone...
i have my nexus one rooted with cyanogen mod 6 rc3 . it comes standard with adw launcher and just recently i have installed launcher pro which i think runs smoother... so wen i run them is there any way to stop adw from running automatically or uninstalling it because it doesnt let me uninstall it. also i think its wasting my memory running in the background for nothing. thankss
Remove it using ADB or Root Explorer.
It should ask you which one you want as default after flashing a new rom. Forget if there is a way to set that after initially done.
When i installed launcher pro at first. It asks me wen i press the home button which to make default. And i set it to launcher but the adw still runs in the background. I ll try root explorer to uninstall to see if that works

ok so i got adw uninstalled... but now does any one know how to change themes and icons and stuff for the homescreens of launcher pro
...more Battery if i have Touchwiz on my Phone too?
And how can i get ADW.Launcher only (Replace Touchwiz?)
i used it for a day and battery was fine
i also had launcher pro and widget locker all installed but was using adw so no problems on battery
now to use it as default instead of tw launcher
just install it and press the home bottun u will get an option menu to choose to wich launcher and a use as default so
click use as default and then select adw launcher
keep in mind i dont know if u can re use tw with out reflash or something but again i am a n00b so each time i choose the launher i watn
Yea i know that, thats how it works for now. but i do think Touchwiz Home isent off. it feels like i could just change between them easy (home switcher).
I think ADW.Launcher is on and Touchwiz is kinda in the background... using my memory!
I would like to get it replaced fully (NO TOUCHWIZ)
You can do this by rooting your phone and then using titanium backup to uninstall TWlauncher.
I don't think that when you use ADW , Touch wiz remains in the background.
Yes, you are right. Even though Android system puts the inactive threads to sleep but they are still persistent in the memory. Getting rid of TW.Launcher will give you a bit more free memory but I don't see why it will change your battery backup performance. Unless you are using some funky add-on with ADW.Launcher which is running all the time in the background.
How is your battery backup without ADW.Launcher?
And yes, as Aldonski mentioned, get yourself rooted and get Titanium backup to remove TW.Launcher for good.
I need TW launcher to connect to kies....it won't with otherwise

Yes it will if you remove it completely. I connect to KIES without TW.Launcher.
