PC help - I'm a little stuck - Off-topic

Any help would be grateful on this one
I have just changed the heat sink on my 9300 wifi ITX motherboard GF9300-D-E.
It will not boot windows as it gets to the starting screen and stops. Then when i tried linux it will kernal panic and not boot that either.
I thought it was memory and removed one of the sticks. This is when things started to get strange. The bios screen did not fit my monitor as it should, has done previously, also there are strange flickering on this as well.
So i have tried it with both sticks in one stick [both tried]
Now I am a little stuck as to what it can be. I have also reset the bios to a default state to see if that was the problem and it was not.
There is also the issue that on some boots the bios will not fully load up.
If this is not an issue with the motherboard then i am sorry but i am a little stuck for the reason at the moment.
So anyone any ideas on this as I'm a little stuck. Any other info will be added if you think its necessary but i think its all covered.
Please help I miss my desktop, my ageing 5 yr laptop really does not cut it any more

have you tried safe mode? press f8 when windows is starting. if you get a blue screen post what the error message is.

Yeh the one time i got that far i had
Page_access_in_non_paged_area
That was also on a recovery boot of windows.
Next time nothing happened...
Also i get weird graphics glitches on the memory test from ubuntu. if that means anything to anyone

i need the stop code. it goes like this 0x000000 and so on.

Yeh i would love to post that error message but i cannot get that far until it crashes
I got to the windows system recovery hit enter, then it stopped working
Now it wont even give me a video output! Really starting to think its hardware, but what hardware i do not know. Later im gonna try some RAM from my house mates pc and see if it does any better. If that doesn't work then i think i may be RMAing the motherboard as its the only other thing it can be!
If you have any more ideas joe then i would be welcome to hear them as i would rather not go down the RMA route...
Wish id noted down that bluescreen when it came up now

sounds like your video card. is your video card onboard or add in?

on board but i can disable if i have an external one, i can try this as well house mate has a spare will get back to you when i have tried that one as well.
If it is that then def an rma job. Also i would not be surprised it has been idling at 70/80 degrees C for about 8 months due to the passive cooler i had on it.

Hey,
I had this error, and a range of other ones, stuff like Memory_Error etc (can't remember codes), on my laptop earlier this year.
I tried memtextx86, and burnin, as I suspected it was an issue with ram - I also tried 3 different sets of rams, with different combinations of sticks. Nothing worked.
Unfortunatley, I took it back to the manufacturer and it was the motherboard had gone faulty.
I hope this isn't the case for you, but those 2 programs may be worth trying. Just as a note, neither reported any issues with the ram.
When in windows (vista at the time) I could not be in for more then 20mins without a system hang and crash. Although I did have video out.
Hope this helps
Stu

If the only thing you changed before it started to play up was the heat sink, its probably the cause.
If its turning on and then playing up after a period of time for no apparent reason it could be heat.
Is the heatsink on the right way? I put my amd stock heatsink on backwards when I installed it, didn't notice for 2 months, it wasn't touching the processor at all. Funny when I look back on it.
Did you put thermal paste on it? I once thought it would be a great idea to clean all of that gunk off my cpu, not so good in hindsight.
Hope it helps,
They say you learn from your mistakes, an I've broke more computers than I can count.

stu i shall try at the weekend one more exam and im free for another year!
and mercianary yeh i did clean the paste off, i did apply paste, but going back is a good point as i think there may be slight sizing issues with the heatsink i changed it for. As for temps, not real problem i think as i want from a passive heat sink to one with a fan so it must be cooler, that was the idea anyway.
It was idling at 45-55 if it did anything that needed the whole chip, its a 3ghz core2duo it hit 65 easy and it starts to underclock at 70 so i wanted it to be cooler so i could use all the power all of the time! In hindsight a bad idea.
Also on the grounds of the stock cooler that is broken as it kinda got stuck on the motherboard when i put it on one of the clips went straight through and jammed....
anyway everyone who has replied thanks i will come back when i have done some testing.

dumb question...looks like 2 external 2 gps antenna ports?

I dont have the phone here (its the gf's) but when i had the battery cover off it looked like there were 2 identical ports next to each other. one is labeled GPS on the back cover but the other doesnt open to the back cover. whats that one for? is that for an external wifi antenna? that'd be tits!
also, does anyone know if the current 3D driver plays nicely with the 6.1 update from AT&T? i dont see THAT rom mentioned on the class action website.
now some other questions...
any time frame for a 2D driver?
how long till theres a nice linux distro that'll run on it (i know the cpu is relatively weak compared to even lowend desktop and mobile cpu's that linux currently runs on)
and finally...how drop tolerant is it? my gf has butter-fingers sometimes and doesnt keep it in a case (imma kill her for that one). i'd like if it survived till she got tired of it or till its outdated enough that she moves on...because then i get to play with it ALL i want. i'd LOVE a nice portable internet device with gps capability for free, but will it ever be bootable without a sim card or a calling plan? i hope that oneday it will be!

The 2nd port is for the cell phone antanna I here that if you use it, it can sometimes get stuck and cause you to have to always use an external antanna to get service
Im an electrician and the 1st day I got my phone I was on top of a 5' latter and the case got hung on something and opend causeing the phone to drop about 7' to a tile floor, dident hurt mine (thank god) but I wouldent recommend droping it the screens are fragile
I dont think anyone knows if or when were getting the 2d drivers

thanks for the fast reply and your drop sounds like it was pretty harsh. by zeus himself im going to get her a case. she works in cars all day and leaves it in her pocket or out on the workbench, the camera glass is already all scratched to hell from her pocket. i swear she makes problems for me to fix them...
speaking of, when i updated it to wm 6.1 i had made a backup using sprite, then i restored the backup after the wm6.1 update. well i did a dum dum and restored EVERYTHING the backup saved! so this caused all kinds of errors and problems and she was very pissed and instead of letting me fix it...she drove 30 minutes in the rain to the att store with me being pulled behind her by my ear (almost literally). some chubby guy played with the phone for about 45 minutes and then said 'i've never seen this before, its totally broke. the wm6.1 update you installed wasnt compatible' i told him it was the official one from the att website to which he said 'yea well its not for THIS device, you'll need to send it in for warranty'...yea OK. so NOW my gf is STEAMED! we go to get some chinese takeout. while waiting the 15 minutes i do a hard reset and only restore the contacts list. i hand her the phone and say 'the warranty dept is done with your phone ma'am'
she likes 6.1 much better and with some tweaks from kaiser tweak it runs pretty quick! the only thing that still pains me is the page tearing due to lack of 2d driver

Screen-> Fade to White-> Temporarily

From what I've been able to find from searching, I think my Tilt is about to bite the dust, but thougth I'd post the symptoms and see if anyone has any good info.
My screen has been occasionally fading to white. Not sure how else to describe it. It just sort of starts getting white, and within 2-3 seconds will be completely white. It is still working, that is, I can place a call (using MS Voice Command); I can play music.
I have SPB Mobile Shell on it, and a button assigned to go to the home screen. I can press that, and it will go to the home screen and display normally. If it is a hardware problem, I find it interesting that I can go back to the main screen. I suspect it is close to gone.
Any thoughts?
If so, anyone know what it costs to repair, and where to do that?
Sounds like a software thing to me, I hate to say it but try a hard reset. Do you have a 6.5 rom?
I've been thinking of doing a hard reset anyway, My memory is about used up. I'm not quite sure why. Probably should get it cleaned up.
No, I'm not on 6.5. I've been reluctant to make the move. I did some rom updates some time ago, and then the person working it decided to stop. I decided to stay with MFGR based roms after that.

Good thinking.
Likely NOT software but hardware -- could be the screen is going bad, or perhaps just the ribbon cable than connects the screen is broken or not seated properly.

So the hardware problem is just scared of the button he has assigned?

Try putting the phone in the bootloader screen and let it sit there, that should let it go around the software.
Erm, yeah -- I guess that wouldn't be indicative of a hardware problem
Well, I am doing the hard reset. So far, no white.
Hmmm...lordy...I have a lot of stuff I try to put on this phone.
I wonder how much memory, both types, I need to keep available.
Don't put anything on the phone that you REALLY REALLY don't need. This is a taste phase and you need the least amount of BS on there.
Well, I've got most of what I need loaded, and have 61MB storage, and 63MB of Program memory free. Much better than before.
But I am still getting the fade to white occasionally.
I'm thinking hardware.
Anyone know if checking the 'ribbon' cable is user capable thing? I don't see it easily. I'll so some searching in the meantime.
Also, any feedback on cost and where for a new screen? Or do I just trash it when it finally goes?
[EDIT]
I am noticing that it particularly does it when I click the Windows (lower left) hard button on the front. I'm thinking it is related to a problem with that button.
Could be when you press that button you are flexing the cable enough to make it lose connection and go white -- this could be good news -- there are instructions scattered in this forum on how to take the phone apart. I'd recommend doing that and makeing sure the cable is firmly seated -- you should also inspect it for cracks.
Hopefully it's just a loose cable and making sure its in all the way will fix it -- if not you'll have to track down a new one.
Thanks. I'll do some searching for those instructions.
In the meantime, I called HTC just to get their thoughts on repair. First thing they told me was to upgrade the rom to the latest which is 3.57.502.2 .
I haven't been following ROM discussions. I need to check that out too. I wish I had seen or thought of that before I just spent a day with the hard reset/reinstall
did this get resolved?
I have the same issue. was it the ribbon cable?
update. I loaded a stock rom, and this appears to have solved the fade to white
Sorry...beeen away a bit.
I have not resolved the issue. It is intermittent, and hasn't happened for a few days now.
I searched and have found some instructions about taking the screen apart, but have not tackled that yet.
In my case I can't imagine changing roms making any difference, as I've had this rom for many months and it is just recently starting this.
I have found new LCD screens for this for ~ $30. I'm wondering if replacing the screen may be an ultimate solution or, if it is possible/likely that it is somethign else hardware related.
Been busy, and don't have the tools yet, so it may be a bit (or when it goes permanenly white forcing action) before I get any further on this.
It is definitely a hardware issue, my wife's tilt did the same thing, then it went permanent white. I first took it all apart looking for a bad ribbon cable or connection because it had taken a few good falls. But that was not it. So I bought a screen for about 30.00 online and shazam that was it!
Thanks for that info. I was thinking of ordering the screen, but concerned it could be something other than the screen (even though logically it would make sense that it is the screen.)

[Q] My xperia x1, durbility is poor after just one year of use...

So its been about a year and half since I received this phone for my birthday, and from this moment on, I am 90% sure that these companies design these phones to fall apart after a while so you buy a new one.
Please to not be intimidated by the length of the problems, I really doent want to waste a $600 nice phone. Please help.....
List of problems:
So on one random day, while I was using my phone with EnergyROM sense 6.1 (Not even 6.5 (Windows 6.5.5)) the phone stopped rotating when I flipped the keyboard, as in the screen will not rotate when I try to use the keyboard. The touch screen also becomes uncalibrated, and even when I recalibrate it, it still acts very funky (have to click lower than button or higher, depending on its mood). I did absolutely nothing different with my phone that day, but I did not call my phone dead right away, so I decided to update the ROM with the latest sense 6.5 ROM to see if the OS is corrupt or over-cached. This did not fix the problem.
Also, another very weird thing is the phone's screen will illuminate (I guess backlight), but no picture will show when turned on after sleep mode, and I have to click the top button again to sleep and awake it to get a picture. When flipped, the screen doesn't even fully illuminate, and literally dies down to a black screen (half of the pixels are bright, and then it just fails).
Any help would be very appreciated. What I am thinking of is wiping the phone 100%, and not even leaving a rom on it. I heard there is a command that deletes the junk off your phone from a previous ROM to your updated ROM is clutter free. Any other suggestions?
Edit: I hard reset my phone, and nothing is fixed; I still cannot flip screen into landscape mode.
The "command" you are talking about is called "task 29", look for it in the ROM section.
It sounds like hardware problems, i've had mine for about 1 year and a half as well and no problems besides a couple of scratches.
The flex cable connecting LCD and board might be out of order.... I had the same issue.

Yeah I heard about that problem. I will first task 29 it, but are there any guides to take apart and fix the flex cable, or even just unplugging it and plugging it back in?
Also, what did you do with your broken phone? Did you buy a new one or get it fixed?
Thanks for the feed back both of you.
my X1 also aged same as yours and it still runs flawlessly now. so it might depends on how you used and keep it
as for the "wiping off the phone" its called task 29, and is encouraged to do before you flash a new ROM, have you did it before flashing energyROM?

No, but I just did now, but it seems to be a hardware problem because nothing seems to be working properly still. This is some serious BS because I am very over protected with this phone, just to prevent stuff like this to happen. I have never dropped it ONCE, and it seemed to just wear out by itself. The lenses covering the camera is cracked also, and the screen is all screwed up, and I didnt do absolutely nothing abusive to it, I am 110% sure of this.
Any suggestions on how to fix hardware/ ribbon connected to the screen problem?
Order a new cable and replace it.
If you search on Youtube for the video on how to disassemble x1 there is a complete guide that shows you. Its pretty easy and all you need to do is, take the flex cable out and carefully plug it back in. Then carefully put your X1 back together and hopefully you issue will be fixed. If it still persist, then try and get the flex cable changed.

Completely bricked?

Hey all!
Today my phone seems to have completely died, it only boots into speedmod recovery but wont let me do anything in it, I managed to access the 'Install Zip from SD card' but there was nothing there it said. It wont boot into android what so ever. I again managed to access speedmod recovery and get to mount for storage mode which when connected shown no files.
It hasn't worked right since I was pushed over in town, I landed onto of my phone and it came out unscathed but since then it has crashed allot and the when I remove the back the smell of like when a capacitor has blown up (If you don't know that smell it's nasty, my tutor at college popped one to show us what happened, he was actually bored and wanted to do something fun and random XD) but yeah it stinks like that really bad.
I tried to boot into download mode and access it to install stocks but my computer hasn't picked it up at all in any way, doesn't even play the device connected or device faulty sound...
=/ I guess it is broken. What can you tell me? Any help would be awesome.
Scott
Hi, first of all don't panic until you have tried every possible fix.
I had once a problem when the phone only would boot up to an ugly exclamation mark and a drawing telling me to plug it to the computer, but the computer din't even notice when I plugged the phone so I supposed it was dead.
I would recommend you to try to make the JIG cable recommended in this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=819551, I managed to put my phone in a working download mode and use odin to flash the SO again
Hope this helps
Hey! Thanks for the quick reply but unfortunately I tried this and nothing would happen. I had the download mode problem when I first tried to install custom roms, it worked then but unfortunately this time it hasn't =[
From what you say I would be very careful, from the smell you describe it sounds like a short somewhere, and could feasibly cause a fire , so pull the battery!
GTi 9000 insanity006/glitch
Smell of burned capacitor? Dude, dont turn it on.
Take battery off, disassemble it and watch the mainboard for any broken elements, if you have got a little electronic physics knowledge then take service manual, all onboard elements are marked there as R, C and so on, test them with multimeter, or ask someone to do it and pray you'll find damaged element. Start checking from power circuits (most likely the biggest capacitors sets onboard)
Also some soldering around may be broken, on battery circuit it would cause high temperature gain, use magnifying glass and little tool to make careful pressure to check it.
If some BGA chip unsoldered/bricked, then you are screwed. Maybe you know someone in hi tech service can resolder it for you, as usually it is not cheap.
Thanks for your help, I haven't disassembled the phone where the scent had grown stronger then faded slowly, I placed the battery back into the device enough so that the contacts were fully meeting and the scent came back strong. I will check it with a multi meter to see if there is any kind of fault to do with that.
Thanks again for your help, it is much appreciated =]
FIXED
Hey guys,
I just want to post a quick update to say I've got my Galaxy S working again. I managed to get the phone into download mode and it was eventually picked up in Odin3 I managed to get the phone working again, rooted and installed Darky's ROM 10 and as it turns out it is that causing the problem, sorry Darky but it doesn't work for me, 9.5 runs like a dream though so it's all good on that front.
Just got all my apps downloaded and installed and everything is in perfect order.
The wierd smell I spoke of in an earlier post is actually because of the wallet I kept my phone in, I've taken it out n it's stopped smelling so I've bought a new wallet for it, don't know why it smelled, probably because I kept my phone in my friends rucksack which has had alsorts spilled in it XD Thanks for the advice, it was much appreciated.

Reflow Main Board @home

I was given this Verizon G2. The complaint was random reboots resulting in getting stuck at LG logo at boot. I Googled and found out that the internal SD card solder connection to the main board goes bad. So, I tried a standard conventional oven @ home reflow of the main board. I removed the G2 main board and baked it in the oven at 380° for 8 mins. I am typing this post from the phone. It successfully rebooted on the first try after reassembly. It has been up running CyanogenMod 12.1 (flashed before bake) for about 10 mins. I booted it and went straight to chrome and xda.com. I'll be back later. I'm gonna go make some calls and play games and see if I still get a reboot.
Update 1: I'm an hour or two in now and have made a 20+ minute phone call while using a Bluetooth headset and still using other apps like social media and reddit.
Update 2 -Final update: Since I got zero replies on this, I'll assume no one cares. If anyone does, the phone is still working. I've been using it as my daily driver for like 3 or 4 days now. I'm gonna keep using it for another couple weeks until my tax return gets in and I can buy an unlocked D851.
.........The End........
I say FASCINATING! How do you get it apart to get the main board out? Mine never gets LTE anymore, which sounds to me like an antenna came disconnected. Heating up the antenna connections might be worth a shot.

You will never be able to truly reflow any electronic devices in your typical household oven as they do not get hot enough. Standard leadfree reflow temperatures peak around 500F, after a ramp up and ramp down time that prevents thermal stresses from destroying the parts. Even with the proper equipment, reflowing BGA/CSP parts is difficult without removing the parts first and then re-balling them as the flux has already been cured during the initial solder process.
I would seriously caution anyone from attempting this without the proper tools and knowledge as you could permanently damage any one of a number of components - I've seen IC packages literally explode after absorbed moisture in the device's resin packaging vaporized by ramping too fast.

I care Rich, I care. I loved my G2 but it crapped out on me at school one day. No warning just froze and shut down. Got it back up long enough at one point to pull whatever data I could from it. I ended up getting an S6 Active after jumping between a few crap phones, and the G2 sat in a drawer until tonight when I was looking for some standoff screws in the drawer, and I saw my old flame. The pain from losing her never really went away, and for some reason, I think because I recently did a bit of soldering on a RPi, I thought what if I tried to re-flow this thing? What do I have to lose at this point. Googled g2 mainboard reflow, and your post lit up my life. I baked at 380F for some amount of time re-assembled and I have my G2 again! I may have tried it eventually, but your post inspired me to tear that **** out and turn on the oven right away. I mean, obviously I'm not going to ditch my S6 for the G2, but I'm happy to have it back. Maybe I'll use it for things. Thank you, Rich.
I care!
Mine stopped working.
Was getting pretty hot on a regular basis.
When plugged-in, no lights, just heating up.
Read about "solder re-flow" - don't know how to.
