Hi
I'm on a limited data plan (50MB), so when I'm connected on Edge/3G (or even when on WiFi), I want auto-sync to work on Gmail only for push mail, and maybe to run IM (eBuddy) on the background.
Is there a trick/apps to do it?
As it is now, even when I don't do anything on my N1, just by leaving it on standby eats about 1MB in less than an hour.
thanks in advance
That's an insane data plan, is there no way you can get any more allowance?
Go to Account & Sync Settings and only choose to sync gmail? I don't really get the question, I assume you have already checked out the options?
edit:
Oh and if it's eating 1MB/hour on standby you've clearly got an app that is sending/recieving loads of data and you should remove it.

Yup, I guess my question leads to how do I identify which applications? Is there any apps that allow me to block traffic for these apps which silently eat my data?
I came across DroidWall, but doesn't seem to work on Froyo, anyone know other alternative?

Hi all, I have been using mssmison's Eclair build on my vogue for the past two months, and have run up 100mb+ data useage, where on winmo I was only using 10-12mb.
I have activesync, calendar, and contacts for exchange sync turned on, as this is my work phone and I require these.
I also had google gmail account registered, but set to not sync anything.
No additional applications were installed over the base build. No web browsing or tethering etc, no web or GPS useage - phone has been used exclusively for email/calendar/contacts/phone calls.
Is there any way of finding out where the data useage is leaking? Does android phone home? Is the exchange sync not working very well, and resending/resyncing lots of data? (this is my suspicion based on exchange sync performance).
I've had to switch back to winmo due to the restrictive data plan I'm on for work, which is very frustrating.
Has anyone with the exchange stuff configured experienced a similar jump in data useage?

I would recommend a few things:
-Turn off data via the modem app when you're not using it (which you probably don't want to do since you constantly need exchange available I assume).
-Search the market for a data monitoring app for a better insight on what's using your data.
-Go into Settings>Security and Location. Uncheck the "Use wireless networks" and "Share with Google" boxes. I believe this can cause some extra data usage.
-Turn off Background Data and/or Auto Sync in the settings as well. Once again, you may not want to do this if you want exchange available constantly, but you could try just manually syncing/sending/downloading when necessary to minimize excess data usage.
Hope some of this can help! Good luck.
the stock Gmail application is great but it's a real battery drainer since it utilizes push. i'm only 19 really, so i don't need to see my useless mails about facebook updates(and stuff) that immediately.
the stock Email has no threading and the UI is pretty meh so ye.
is there any nice gmail client there that has mail threading, a nice simple UI and an option for interval mail fetching? tried K-9 and Maildroid, no threading on them lol.
if not, Google please get us an option to enable push or simply use fetch.
i'm currently using JuiceDefender to "disable" data transmission when my screen is idle. ideally by that, no "push" mail when my screen is locked.
Why not deactivate the autosync of gmail?

I tot push is supposed to be more battery friendly than fetch?

You have to maintain a data connection at all times no?
Yes, but it still is far less battery demanding than checking for mail periodically.

In OP's case it's better to turn off data all together.
BTW, how does one turn off HSPDA and enable 3G only on a Bell phone? There's no option in settings/ wireless networks/mobile networks to set this.
hmm I shall try push gmail overnight, currently it's at 10% drain with no syncing of anything, nothing. but with a connection on. thanks guys.
Hi
maybe it's common knowledge, or problem, but i'm not aware of it
why is it, that every time i tick autosync on, on both my mail accounts, it turn itself off after some time?
that way gmail notifications are useless..
er, anyone?
so, is it safe to say that sgs gmail client can't 'push mail'?
Maybe you are using some task killer that is killing the service needed - running in the background?

tnx for the answer, started to think it's a mystery behind
no, no taskkillers, i just don't get any mail until i check manually, kinda sux.
I'm starting to suspect that its because i have 3 accounts, 1 youtube and 2 gmails, but only gmail accounts are set to autosync.
So if nobody else have this prob maybe it's rom related, i still have stock xfjm3
clueless..
I noticed that within 15 seconds my phone used nearly 2MB of data. I was watching data go up in 3G Watchdog. I didn't have any apps open (other than background apps such as Google Talk, Gmail, the basics).
So I downloaded Network Counter to see which app was using the data. It turns out that it's the Dialer, Android System, and Settings that use significantly more data. That doesn't make sense to me. Any idea why these apps (which I thought didn't use data) use so much more than apps such as Gmail or Google Talk?

Would depend on how often you have your phone synching with google and how many services you sync. I use 10-16 GB of data per month but still have the old unl plan. I also sync 3 google accounts, facebook and twitter as well as doing 90% of my internet usage though my phone. But I know I'm in the minority as well.

You luck SOB!
I'm on the $25 2GB data plan. I'm on my wifi as much as possible and always turn off data!

Probably there are some apps on ur phone that are set to get updated automatically to newer versions.
Go to ur market app, and uncheck the "allow automatic update" from all of the google/android base apps. If u leave them checked, they would update when they detect a newer version.
u can get the list of all ur apps by clicking the 'my apps' link in market app. u would need to deselect it individually for all the apps.
I don't have anything set to auto update. That's why I am so confused by this. I guess it's not a big deal cause I use wifi a lot, but it would be nice to know why these things are using data.

I downloaded an app called ZDBox to track my data usage seeing as how theres a 500 MB limit.
Its saying the News app used 300 MB of data, cant find a way to uninstall the POS.
Its saying HTC Sense used about 200 MB of data, cant find a way to disable the POS.
95% of my data is gone, wont be able to make it to the end of my billing period.
Coming off a blackberry, although I still have it.
HTC sense basically just uses data for weather, right? I dont see how that would account for 200 MB of data, its ridiculous.
Also
When opening text messages I get massive lag sometimes, is it a known issue?
that much of data usage seems abnormally high.
are you certain the app you using is showing the right figures?
could it be megabit instead of megabyte?
you could try netcounter, which is a highly reliable app for very close to accurate tracking...
dont think the apps in the background would eat up that much of data.
you could also check in 'accounts & sync' if auto-sync is enabled.
that is known to pull a lot of your data.
try turning off both background data & auto sync for a while
(you won't be able to use most of the internet apps like talk or market as it needs background data to be enable) but this will give you a fair idea if the background apps are actually using up all that data

btw wat rom are you on?
I am on stock rom that came with my phone. Its only about a month old.
The counter is in MB not Mb, I have also received texts from my provider my data is 95% used up so im sure its accurate and definitely those 2 apps that it lists as the main data hogs.
What is accounts & sync, it sounds like email syncing to me. So I will lose email?

that is a bummer isn't it!
by turning off syncing temporarily you will not loose any emails/data.
certain programs log into their own servers to retrieve/send information. other services sync your contacts & other data to the cloud
the next time you turn it on, everything will be re-synced.
you can find this in
settings>accounts & sync
if you are using auto-sync, you can disable certain accounts/apps to sync.
For instance...
Accounts&Sync > News > Sync news (uncheck). leave checked "update when opened" if you want news to refresh when you open the app, if not, disable that also. Same thing goes for Sense.
I'm only using google contact/mail sync rest are all unchecked
