[Q] Better mail application for Gmail? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

the stock Gmail application is great but it's a real battery drainer since it utilizes push. i'm only 19 really, so i don't need to see my useless mails about facebook updates(and stuff) that immediately.
the stock Email has no threading and the UI is pretty meh so ye.
is there any nice gmail client there that has mail threading, a nice simple UI and an option for interval mail fetching? tried K-9 and Maildroid, no threading on them lol.
if not, Google please get us an option to enable push or simply use fetch.
i'm currently using JuiceDefender to "disable" data transmission when my screen is idle. ideally by that, no "push" mail when my screen is locked.

Why not deactivate the autosync of gmail?

You have to maintain a data connection at all times no?

Yes, but it still is far less battery demanding than checking for mail periodically.

In OP's case it's better to turn off data all together.
BTW, how does one turn off HSPDA and enable 3G only on a Bell phone? There's no option in settings/ wireless networks/mobile networks to set this.

hmm I shall try push gmail overnight, currently it's at 10% drain with no syncing of anything, nothing. but with a connection on. thanks guys.

Yes, I do push e-mail everyday (using Edge).
Fully charged Diamond last for 9.5 hrs for normally usage + pushmail.
It is only around 2/3 usage time for my Touch Elf.
Ouch... What do you call "normal usage"?
How many e-mails do you receive daily? Do you retrieve your e-mails as soon as they are on server or did you configure an "x minutes" check?

i have around 50-100 emails daily. poor me.
I have Exchange 2007 mailbox for company, it is pushmail and i got as soon as they are arriving on server. Simultaneously, I have another IMAP4 mailbox for my personal, i check it every 10 mins.
Same settings also apply to my previous Touch Elf, which have 1/3 longer running time for a fully charged battery.
OK I see...
I noticed on the HTC website that the specs for standby time are:
- Up to 396 hours for WCDMA
- Up to 285 hours for GSM
EDGE is GSM, so maybe that's the reason why it sucks the battery so much?
These numbers seem strange, that would mean we can expect a better battery life on 3G networks... I hope it's true!
Keep in mind after the first connection Windows mobile 6 doesn't close the connection. Then the battery life down very fast
Sorry I very newbie in push email... Is it necessary to install anything in the diamond to start receiving push email?
Is there any way to receive real push email from imap4 accounts beside forcing the diamond check the mail box every time?

Hi,
You can try emoze (emoze.com) it is free and you'll have what you need.
You can also try seven (seven.com) witch is the same.
mail2web gmail
Hi
I'm getting gmail pushed through mail2web.
Anyone know how I can get just my inbox and not all the folders and emails ? There's no way to set up a filter for just the inbox --> forward emails.
thanks.
@feridoun
I'm using mail2web as well, however I don't let my email be pushed or forwarded to mail2web. I'm having mail2web set-up to acquire the e-mails from my other accounts. And I only receive the inbox items. Maybe you can adjust something there to just get what you wish for?

Allowing mail2web to aggregate emails would work, but the trouble is, it uses IMAP and of course that mean it pulls emails from Gmail on a timed basis. If mail2web is using IMAP, I may as well set up a direct account on the phone to do just that.
The benefit of forwarding gmail is that mails would arrive almost instantaneously to mail2web and then be pushed to the phone.
Unfortunately in the case of gmail, all email gets forwarded including those that I have filtered out and don't want in my regular inbox, so every few minutes my phone is pinging to let me know I have a new email.

I've been using emoze for the past week or so while I wait for a Blackberry solution and must admit its pretty neat - I'd recommend it to anyone who's looking for a FREE and reliable service - from a corporate perspective if you have an existing Outlook Webmail system then this really is a great interim solution!
I would still like my BlackBerry service back though!

Is it possible to ad more accounts in Emoze? And is Emoze pushing HTML emails or TXT..?? This moment i use mobipush.com, but they don't support HTML push...
I'm not sure if emoze can support more than one account at a time in the "free" version??? Dont think so but you should check.
As for HTML or Text - Text only for now I think???
Thats a lot of thinking??? Their website give some good detail....
I use 4smartphone.net - for push email.
My battery needs charging every second day - my phone use is 1 hours calls 50 SMS and surffing 30mins inbetween charges.
I use momail.com and they support push email,
ihave never used that before and i dont know how to set it up in diamond,
any one that can guide me in the right direction?
I've tried to use my mail2web push-mail account on my Diamond, and I have to say that I was surprised that it did not decreased that much the battery longevity.
(compared to my wizard and trinity I used to do push-mail on)
This might be because by default, the settings are not high consuming on the Diamond (no wake-up on email reception, no ring, etc.)
since everything is done with the screen light off, I even think that it reduces more the battery charge to put on the light and check what time it is, than to have the push running in the back ground.
While we're on the subject of emoze, does it work (ie still push) while the phone is in standby?
Yep, it sure does.
I used to have my diamond setup for push and barely got through the day with my battery,
now I upgraded to the newest radio rom and set the mail sync to every 15min.
after this I have about 60% power left after one day.
I used to think push is a must, but honestly, 15min syncs are just fine. no mail cant be that important....

Push email

Trying another email app, seems whatever email app I use for my Gmail, push never retrieves the email well, though will appear on my computer instantly, may be 10 minutes, half hour, etc. before it comes to my phone unless I open the app, and sometimes need to hit the refresh within it. I've tried with active sync and default email app, too.
Seems better with data.
Wondering if there's a setting I don't have set correctly. If anyone has encountered this and knows, would appreciate it
Account settings - check frequency - every 5 min.
The stock android email app will not check more frequently than that as far as I know.
Unlike your home computer, most cell phones don't have an unlimited power source and unlimited uninterrupted internet connection.

Thanks. Was it ok with wifi? Seems to have more problems that way. I've tried Maildroid, I Like that you can compose in html (emoticons, font color, etc.) trying the app "Inomail" as it has that ability, but with all email apps, push can be very delayed and end up setting a poll frequency

Thanks. No problem polling, as you mention. I can set K-9 email to poll every minute with reliably.
I don't remember any problems with wifi. I realized that it consumes much more battery on push, so i reset mine to check onlywhen i open the app

[Q] mail sync

I am using the simple email app included, Gmail is disabled. Using arhd 10.1 but this problem was here long before with original stock.
I guess I have already tried all possible combinations to have the mail sync, maybe someone else has an idea on how this works if at all.
In settings I tried the smart sync, then each number of minutes, whatever I put in there, the only way to have the mail query the server is to manually open the application. For instance, I send myself an email from desktop, my ipad picks it up in a matter of seconds, I mean the fu$#er is in sleep mode, cover on, then I almost instantly hear that notification sound. The One however, I could wait all day, no sign it knows about it.
I have 2 email accounts configured, yahoo and Gmail, I also tried to add one at a time, nothing seems to help.
Thanks for any idea on how to make it work or any suggestions on a third party app?
Sent from a pizza
Smartsync takes time to build a database of data about your usage and when to check for email. For Gmail the best bet is the Gmail app, which will get almost instant push notifications.

I'd rather be using only one app for my email accounts - - the stock mail for instance.
It's just that no sync mode seems to work, be it smart or not

like the guy said above. smart sync needs to build a repour before it will know when to check. its not having information pushed to it like the gmail app is. your best bet is to use the 2 separate apps since each individual app has the ability to push emails immediately while HTC's smart sync or manual sync is just basically timed sync-ing. its just that smart sync is timed to how the phone learns your usage?

As I said the manual mode doesn't work either.
I am going to try k9 for now..

Okay, I think the problem might be elsewhere: the k9,same as mail doesn't seem to sync either. I have tried this over wifi and data, in power settings the sleep mode is disabled, I even disabled power saver.
Does email synchronization works for anyone excepting gmail users?
I am going to enable gmail, see how that behaves with sync..
Sent from a pizza
Manual mode as in your in the mail app and request it to refresh? And the email still doesn't come through? Not sure then.. I used smart sync for a while then I found it to not update fast enough for my needs. But it did always work.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
The mail app syncs over wifi, I found out. Yes, it took a while (set it up to check at 5 minutes.). However, it still doesn't work when screen is off.
While on data only, the whole sync is very conservative. Unless I open up myself the mail thing it doesn't bother to refresh. In fact, the only thing synchronizing over data is weather from BW widget, but even then I am afraid it only refreshes itself when opening the screen. Ah, and Google play, I get notifications over mobile data as well.
I mean I used to want this conservative data behavior when on 100mb data plan, however now I have 3gb to spend and having trouble with email notifications?
I suspect there might be a misbehaving app will try reinstalling everything and one app at a time..

K9 Mail eating more battery than 2h SOT?

Usually I get very great battery life (also very high screen on time thanks to DirtyUnicorns ROM + Kernel) but sometimes my battery is getting eaten away within 3 hours from 100℅ to 20℅. Looking at the screens I attached it looks like K9 Mail is eating so much battery? I have 2x gmail accounts + 2x IMAP (my own mail server) accounts active.
Are there some of my K9 Mail settings wrong or whats going on? Any ideas?
Thanks
Its that "mobile radio active" problem. Its often referred to as a bug.
Well according to google this is a common problem for some time now which hasnt been fixed.

this is the wrong thread for K9 discussions.. but I'm going to add to it anyway ?
K9 was my goto email app, still is in a way, but it just does not play nice with lollipop on any device. even using beta builds. if had no choice but to go to the gmail app since it can handle the exchange and ever changing bad decisions of Microsoft's email names and server labels. let alone having to run from website webmail settings.. yeah.. goto the gmail app, and give K9 a break until they get the wake lock issues worked out... other step may be to have tasker do sync toggle somehow..
go track down the beta builds and keep an eye out for changes that may be specific to its lollipop compatibilities.

Now I remember why I removed gmail...its missing "Mark as read" in the statusbar notification. Annoying as I wake up every day with ~15 Status Mails fromy servers which I usually "Mark as read" with one click (if the mail titles tell me that everything is okay with those servers). And since I use folders/filters/labels for mails I never delete/archive.

4 is a lot of accounts. I presume that your custom imap accounts are set up to push? Are your gmail accounts set up to pop3 or imap? If they are pop3, then your phone is going to continually poll the servers for new mail, and this will eat battery like nobody's business.
There is also a question of the correctness of how you have configured your imap servers. I don't know what kind of experience you have in configuring and maintaining imap servers, but there are some rookie mistakes that can be made that can have a severe impact on client battery life. Some of dovecot's default settings are actually quite bad for mobile devices. I'm not particularly familiar with other imap servers, dovecot is my server of choice.
What stands out to me is the "E" in your signal meter. Edge. The slower the network, the longer the radio has to be active in order to transfer the same amount of data. So imagine polling for a minute every 2.5 minutes (2 accounts). That is a lot of radio time and a lot of battery.
---------- Post added at 02:32 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:26 PM ----------
Also not to create an argument here... but k9mail does very well on battery consumption on 5.x. Over this weekend (long weekend here in Canada), didn't use my phone much (construction/reno weekend), but something interesting caught my attention on Sunday afternoon. Having been taken off the charger 6AM SATURDAY morning (so it had been on battery for around 34 hours), it was claiming 4 days power remaining. That is ONE IMAP connection to a dovecot server that I maintain personally, the full time it was connected to an HSPA network (my service provider is exclusively HSPA).
So obviously, when everything is configured correctly, k9mail does NOT eat significant battery.

Thank you for your reply !
All my IMAP Accounts are using push (2x gmail + 2x my own server).
Could be that my server isnt configured perfectly. Mind giving me a few tips of what I should look for in my settings?
Yes I believe the battery drain could be because of bad radio signal. Maybe a Tasker script (if signal below 10% disable auto sync, which also disables push in k9) would help?
K9 in general has many settings which I am not sure of how they affect battery drain (e.g. sync forever or only last 31 days?) Which folders should have which priority and how to push/sync them. Would it make sense to make screenshots of my settings to compare them with yours?
Thanks !
Edit: In k9 I have not set all folders to class 2 except the important ones which are class 1 (inbox, sent, folders where new mails get moved from inbox to folder based on rules/labels). Push/sync only active for class 1 folder.
I did this because gmail has A LOT of standard folders and also an "all mails" folders which gets synced out of the box.
I also made a Tasker script which disabled autosync when I am NOT on 3G HSDPA or WIFI (maybe I should add 3G to the list of exclusion together with 3G HSDPA and WIFI?).

A quick look over my notes suggests looking into the setting "imap_idle_notify_interval". Dovecot's default is 2 minutes. That means that the imap server will be sending over a battery eater every 2 minutes regardless of whether there is a push notification or not. Between 2 accounts (edit: and multiple paths per account), they could all hit at the same time, or they could hit at different times, so you're looking at server initiated wakeups all over the place. Note that k9mail has a default client initiated wakeup at 24 minute intervals. RFC2177 specifies 29 minutes -- the k9mail default is matched to give a little slack to let the server renew the connection 5 minutes after the expected client-initated wakeup. So set the server to 29 minutes.

That setting really shouldn't affect anything, since ancient messages won't be changing much. I.e., there is no "sync" on stuff that remains the same -- it just gets downloaded once and sits there.

I think I may be only performing push on inbox. IIRC, k9 creates a new idle connection for *each* path. This isn't a flaw in k9mail, but a limitation in IMAP protocol.
More edit: about the client-vs-server initiated wakeups.... if you set the server-side to more than the client side, then the server will not actually send the wakeup at all. Why would it if it knows that the connection has already been refreshed by the client within the timeout? Once the client has control over the idle refresh, k9mail can schedule the refresh messages in batches to send out all at once within the same system alarm/wakelock.

[Q] Energy Efficient Mail Client

I would like to ask for some advice-save trying all and every mail client for my Nexus 6. Point is, my current Type Mail client is imho using too much battery juice - roughly about 40% by the battery stats. Any suggestions, brothers, apart from "check mail every 6 hours and save that battery"?
I use MailWise. It's a very nice email client and I have mine set to check four separate email accounts every minute and my stats show it's used 9% of my battery today.
depends what type of mail. I use "nine" for exchange. It's pricey but the best exchange mail client I have used.

K9 - best I've ever used. Also - try changing your sync time to 15 minutes or more.
I used K-9 on my last phone but the UI is rather old-fashioned and I wanted a change to something nicer looking. So far, I haven't found anything that K-9 does that MailWise doesn't but there are so many email clients to choose from that it's very much a matter of personal taste.
40% battery use is a lot for an email client so I would have thought that almost anything would work better than the OP's current client.

Well there's your problem right there! Checking mail TAKES BATTERY.
I'm not trying to be funny.
Your problem is that you don't need to CHECK your mail to GET your mail.
Let me explain;
Use K9mail. Nothing else, only that.
Set it up to connect to your email server using ***IMAP*** and not pop3.
K9mail (and not other imap clients) can keep a TCP session open in order to receive new messages from the server when they arrive. Some people call this "push". It uses a feature of IMAP protocol called IDLE.
This is what Inbox needs. A sync interval option. I love inbox and I don't like having to turn sync off and checking mail manually. I will be looking for something similar to inbox, maybe with material design, with sync interval.

Reporting.
Thank y'all friends!
Now I have a list of your recommendations and I will go through it. But let me briefly report.
Changed sync interval on TypeMail to 30 minutes and got as low as 14% of total consumption.
Deleted TypeMail, installed CloudMail - use it currently with Exchange, iCloud, Hotmail (still remember this one) and Gmail. Currently the share of it is 4%. I do understand the IMAP "got_mail_flag", will check it as well.
Again^ thank you for your advices, XDA has assembled some great minds.
