Two questions- Hero -> Dream related - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there, so I currently have an HTC hero, but I also am currently learning to drive. I am aware that I am able to sell my hero for around £160 and purchase a decent dream for around £90. However, I am wondering, as I have all my apps on my Hero, would it be possible to do a Titanium Backup on the Hero, and reinstall that backup on a dream (obviously both rooted)
Furthermore, do you guys recommend I do this, as I know the Hero has more ram, but is it THAT much of a difference?
Thanks
Tucka

please could anyone help with my problem? looking at purchasing g1 but will need to know this first
thanks

.apk's are .apk's... assuming the application it's self is compatable with the dream it will work.... id reccomend using ADB to drag the apk's out manually then reinstall via adb on your new phone. not only will you have a copy of the .apk's if you screw up, and you might learn a little about android in the process... all paid app's are linked to you google account and should be re-dl'ed from the market as some paid apps balk at manual installs...
however for your other question, there is a pretty big difference in the snappieness of the phone between the hero and 32b, if your network is compatable with the 32a rev then you may not be too disappointed....
i love my G1 but as soon as a keyboard HTC android phone with a 1Ghz + processor thats compatable with T-mo 3g rears its head, my G1 will find its self in a backup/dev phone role....

i must say, the attractiveness of the physical keyboard is one that is bringing me back to the g1, as well as the save in money. As i believe i am aware(correct me if im wrong) the g1 can be overclocked to 528mhz. This is the speed that the hero runs at and, with the addition of the swap file, will this even the two phones out slightly. Please note i will be using a2sd so storage space will not be a problem.
Thanks for the info, ans i am happy that titanium will work fine

market app for magic

hi
i am using htc magic, but there no "market app". how to install market app on htc magic. can anyone help me
shameer2255
Why did the phone come from? Is it stock, unaltered from a phone company or retail store or what?
I have never heard of a stock phone without the market app. However, you should be able to flash an appropriate dev ROM for your phone (need to figure out if it is 32A or 32B), or flash a standard ROM.
You could just load the market apk but if that is missing I would really wonder what else is missing.
If your carrier does not have paid apps, then you can use Market Enabler to access them.
I have the same problem. Just received it as a gift that was purchased from www.blueflymobile.com and it seems that the Android Market is the only app that is missing. Why would they take it out???
Yeah my phone was the same, and the android market app is closed source and isn't readily available for download either. The dev guys may know how to inject one into your existing install, but it's probably easier to just flash your phone with one of the ROMs in development forum.

Had the same frustration about the missing market on my mobile. Seems like the missing market on the first non-google-branded HTC android mobiles is mainly caused by a missundestanding between google and HTC. Hopefully they set things straight and updates will be available soon which include the market. But then its good that we got some elite hackers/developers here on XDA
I had the same problem.
I flashed my phone last week to the newest rom update of cyanogen.
All works perfect now!!!!!
Sorry if i keep repeating the same problem as previous user. Im actually having the missing android market application aswell. I bought this from eBay UK from company called Elcell(www.elcell.co.uk). Turned out that it doesnt have any market, not even a single google application installed - just a plain htc phone with basic stuff. I'm just hoping someone would actually guide me a step by step on how to get Android Market manually because I've been looking for this for long time. I really really need help, please any expert people from this forum.
Airtel India Magics have no google apps either
I bought my Magic 32A from India Airtel. Guess what? No google apps there either and a perfected SPL which meant I had no way of flashing a replacement. I ordered a second HTC Magic 32A from the states and it had no google apps either.
Only way I have found to get the market on the phone is to reflash stuff. I don't believe the market can be packaged up like many of the other apps. There are alternatives like slideme.org which offers a "market-like" experience. They even have a agent you can install to quickly download and install apps.
But as nice as slideme could become; its nothing like the market. For the airtel India Magic phones, one is kinda stuck until getting the phone redone. There are some nice Hero ROMs out now.
For those who don't want to flash a cooked rom should get an official update from HTC soon if not already out. Seems like HTC and google cleared out the misunderstandings and future Android mobiles from HTC should ALL have the market installed. So the 32A models will be able to enjoy the google apps as well as exchange

MT3g Fender Music apk

Is it ture the the MT3G Fender has a new music .apk and if so can some one post it up...?
I have the Fender Mytouch coming in the mail. its the first android device i'll have ever used so i dont know how to extract files from it. if its anything like WinMo, im sure i can figure it out, but in case i can't it would be great if someone to give me a quick tutorial.
I want to get everything i can off this new phone and get it up here.
It's nothing like winmo,I had a touch hd and when I changed to magic I bricked it cos I thought it was like win mo. Android will let u flash the wrong thing thus bricking.
Read up like mad and make sure you quadruple check everything! But you will love android!
I downloaded it from one of the devs on twitter... it wont install on any rom i have tried though so it seems useless
could always ask a dev to work theyre magic? they managed to port hero keyboard for us by removing some stuff?
Any news on this?
i wasnt able to firgure out how to do it. if it means anything, though, i dont even use the default music app. its a little slow and kinda bland looking. meridian is better.

Porting FM Radio to mytouch slide? Is this possible?

I wanted to know if anyone was successful or tried porting the htc fm radio from the htc aria or evo and have it working for the mytouch silde?
I would love to have a radio.... but does the slide even have the hardware for it?
The Slide should be able to use it, but we need someone that knows about this to figure it out. Like they did to the Cliq.
Yea i hope someone can port this and mobi tv so i can use it on my slide
It's certainly possible, but it requires kernel support. You could readily download the apk and libraries and push them to the slide, but it still probably wouldn't work [edit: just did that and it didn't]. The ROM chefs for the CLIQ learned to compile their kernels with support for the fmradio in order to get everything working, but it took a lot of trial and error on their part.
This would be awesome
I was under the impression that this was hardware-based, meaning specific hardware would have to be present on the device in order to tune to those frequencies...?
You're correct. It is hardware-based. Thing is, many Android phones use the same radio chip, which is an all-in-one deal, capable of data, bluetooth, and fm radio, if I've read correctly. For those that have this particular chip, it's just a matter of kernel support, libraries, and the app to access it.
Eugene got it working for the Motorola CLIQ. I would imagine that, if it were possible for the Slide, we would have heard something by now.
Some of you who owns slide should try to figured it out which chip is it used for bluetooth. If ti is chip from texas instruments, called TI WL1271 or TI WL1273, then drivers and aplication could probalbi be ported from HTC Legend rom, which is using TI WL1273, cause this chip is capable of receiving and maybe even transmitting FM radio.
EDIT: So nobody knows the answer?? I've already asked this on two different forums in three different threads
Wow, I would love to have it transmitting. My friend used to have a Nokia phone that had that feature, its really cool.
If you look at /system/etc/firmware you can see a wl1271.bin Also a Firmware
for the wl1271. take attention on http://www.lsr.com/downloads/tiwi/datasheet/TIWI_Datasheet.pdf, the chip has fm-radio...
If the pins are connected, it should be possible...

That is good news! Anyone know how to make the magic happen?

I only did a quick readover since im headed to bed, but if no code really needs to be messed with and just connect some pins to make this possible then i'll look into it since electronics is more my thing than software

Well since stock rom from slide is also using htc's framework I think it is very possible for you to port drivers and aplication to slide. But what woudl be even greater if someone would manage to port FM radio into cyanogenmod. Once it would be ported on one device with this chip, then it could be used on every other device with same chip. Here is the discussion about porting it on Legend in cyanogenmod, but now one has step up to the challange. youn can learn here what needs to be done. Good luck to anybody who will try!
The slide doesn't have the hardware for it, I already tried

Just wanted to say hi!

Hey guys/gals what is up. I'm so happy to announce that sometime next week my HTC Aria will be handed to me by UPS. Anyway I have been a member here for a while under the HTC Fuze(Touch PRO)section and tinkering around with there android port. That was untill my phones touch screen decided not to work back in june. So I have been Sitting around with my old Nokia that still has the Cingular Wireless logo on the back. Anyway I can't wait to finally be back in the phone game and finally on a true android phone. Is there any apps besides advanced task killer I should keep my eye out on?
Thanks a bunch,
Matt(AkumaMax)
I used Advanced Task Killer for a week or so, then heard some saying you shouldn't use a task killer with Android. After reading up a bit on the subject, I came to the conclusion that they are unnecessary and may actually increase battery drain.
There are a ton of great apps. Depends on what you want to do... I would highly recommend LauncherPro for customizing the look of your phone. Camera360 is a great app for adding special effects to your camera images. I use Appbrain.com to browse the market, and it's companion apps Appbrain Market and Fast Web Installer both installed on my phone. This combo allows me to browse their website for apps and click INSTALL on the website to send the app to my phone and install it without me having to do anything else.
Not sure how adventurous you're going to be with modding your phone. It took me about two weeks to build up the courage to root and install a custom ROM. I don't regret it a bit! I installed Cyanogen 6.1 RC1 and then a couple days later RC2 released, so I installed that. Basic benefits of doing this are upgrading from Android 2.1 to 2.2, ability to side-load apps from the SD card, moving apps to the SD card and off the internal phone memory, live wallpaper support, and I'm sure there are plenty more, but that's what hits me off the top of my head.
There's lots of good help on these boards, I've asked plenty of noobish questions and haven't had a single nasty response. Don't hesitate to ask anything that comes to mind... after you search, of course! =)

Oh there is no doubt I want to root the phone. Just for the fact I want my apps off my phone and on my SD card only. I modded my HTC fuze to the fullist but now it's useless. So I can't wait to get back into the game. I know this phone is not the greatest out there but like I said it's something to get me by untill I decide on the Nexus One or maybe an EVO. Anyway I heard that same info about Advanced task killer so I will probibly stay away from that. I just want the ability of my phone to be the best it can be. Hope to see all you soon.

@911Jason man, you're such a pest! Hahahahah j/k
So, I would go against putting all of your apps on the SD card. I've done a lot of research on this, and unless you have a Class 6 or higher card, running apps from the SD are pretty pointless. There is a pretty decent support forum around, it might take a while to get a reply, but its getting better.
Some of my favorite apps:
Launcher Pro Plus
PowerAmp
Audio Manager Pro
Dolphin HD Browser
ChompSMS

Who me?! What'd I say?
Tasker is the one app I couldn't go without. Use it to automate settings such as WiFi, volumes, brightness. Make your own widgets, automatically send SMS messages. Look for the google group. The developer is there and provides great support.

woohoo finally got it
Enjoy!

Just wanted to say hi 2.
For all those with sgs2 try villainrom with nymphetamine 2.0.1 kernel.
It works great and for a heavy user like myself I must say the battery life is the best ever.

Remember this is the Aria forum...
saying hi, need ten post to ask stuff on cyanogen forum.
hello akumamax, welcome. i have had my aria for about a year now and i love this phone with cm7. there are so many good apps out there but the three things that stands out for me are:
1) amazon app store. there's a free pay app every day, and its yours to keep.
http://www.amazon.com/mobile-apps/b/ref=sa_menu_adr_app4?ie=UTF8&node=2350149011
2) s2e. this app is awesome and its free. been using it for about 6 months now and it has been flawless.

3) get s off… you'll need it.

[Q] Possible to run google maps from sd?

Is it possible to run google maps from sd? Running out of internal memory, and have moved everything else possible to sd.
Nexus one 4ever
Clean out your phone, you have too much stuff. Really you need to unload some stuff.
Root and install Apps2EXT.
Jack, why do you prefer apps2ext over apps2sd (darktremor)? I'm trying to decide which way to go...

You're confused. Apps2Ext is linking the apps directory to an ext partition on the SD card, ie: what darktremor does. Saying Apps2Ext is a way to differentiate between Froyo (Apps2SD) and ext (Apps2Ext).
And why do it? EVERY app safely lives on the SD card, no worries about widgets or stuff that runs all the time or apps which really don't want to move to the SD card.
Probably am confused - wouldn't be the first time...
I though darktremor was one of a few different methods. I move apps to the SD with Froyo, but I still have to keep an eye on internal storage, because only part of the app gets moved...
Trying to find a better way...

I think I recall Google saying that was in development. T-Mobile doesn't really work anywhere and especially near and outside of major city limits. So when you really need a map tmobile doesnt work, having maps available on sd would be incredible. God I hate T-Mobile, I just hate them so damn much. They told me to write down all the places my phone doesn't work so I can tell them. Apparently I can't just be a customer, if I want decent service I have to actually work for T-Mobile for free. Just a useless, God awful carrier.

Maybe have a look at this thread. I've used it before, but never messed with caching the tiles to the SD card, which is apparently supported.
