Anyone know why/if we need 2 Setup.apk's - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I JUST NOW realized there is an HTCSetupWizard.apk and a SetupWizard.apk.
Does anyone know if we need both of these?
I'm gonna try removing one and re-flashing to see what happens

Let us know. I think one is for the initial phone setup. I removed the HTC one and nothing bad happened. Atleast not that I know of.

I can confirm that without either of the setup.apk's a fresh rom flash will loop at the point that a setup program is supposed to run

well, I couldn't get a fresh flash to work with just the SetupWizard.apk (the smaller one). I gave up on it as I was also having trouble with some other stuff I was trying to achieve.
At the suggestion of someone who is much smarter than me I looked in my build.prop and found 3 instances, all toward the bottom, of the following line: ro.setupwizard.mode=
2 of them said =DISABLED and one said =OPTIONAL
Anyone know how to use these lines as they are intended? I did a very small amount of searching, it was late.
I havent tried using just the HTCSetupWizard.apk w/o the SetupWizard.apk so that may work, not sure yet.

My Guess as to why there are two:
1st HTC setupwizard is the initial setup that you see when you boot the phone. The 2nd setup wizzard is the GMail setup that you enter when you setup your gmail account. Then it goes back to the HTC one when setting up Exchange, Fbook, and Twitter...
Just my theory from going through that process oh I don't know 2.5 million times in 7 months.

Can you still report that removing HTCSetupWizard.apk has no effect on the phone?
Can you still go into settings - accounts - and enter facebook, twitter, flicker, and gmail account information.

Scaled Back Stock ROM

This is a build I put together yesterday... It's basically stock ROM with the bloatware removed along with most sense elements... I'm working on a more pure vanilla, but builds thus far are really unstable. This build has been stable on my phone- with the exception of Rosie Utility FC at startup that I can't figure out since Rosie is gone. Wifi tether is enabled, google apps are included, su and busybox are installed and working, and I'm using launcher2 for now. Try it out and see what you think- nothing special, but it's something to play with until the pros release something great...
link removed- see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=713316 for newest work...
I am getting major force closes on every thing when it boots up. Am I doing anything wrong. The only ROM I can get to work is the cyan test rom.
Acore is one of the force close but there are many when it boots.
did you wipe before install? I haven't had these problems... so it's hard to tell you what's going on- sorry it's not working for you though...
I did do a wipe but not sure if I am doing it right. It does seem like it is installing both roms. What is the best way to wipe?
In clockwork recovery select wipe data/factory reset... then wipe cache partition.
Yeah I finally got to wipe. Thanks for the help
Any chance you will get a version of this with the stock android dialer and phone.apk (i.e. like the Nexus One)?
That's where I'm headed eventually... I'm trying to figure out how to get nexus over to the inc, but the gsm/cdma thing is busting my ass... So far I have it loading with working hardware, but it won't join the damn network...

just to help out, from experimenting with rom building myself i came across this:
Search the XDA-developers forum for "Safely remove Rosie.apk on FreshToast 1.1?" (I cannot post a link because its a new account sorry)
its meant for the HTC Hero BUT it explains that you want to get rid of HtcAddProgramWidget.apk to make that FC go away.
the question is will that break anything, try it and find out
I flashed your rom and saw the FC then "rm HtcAddProgramWidget.*" and the FC went away in the setup process. idk if it breaks anything else when you actually use the phone though. good luck!

Nice- thanks for the help...
I'd like to see a stock dialer work with verizon to troubleshoot an issue.
A weird issue which not many people have seemed to mention is the fact that you can't make multiple calls with Verizon. Perhaps its a verizon limitation? I am new to verizon so I am not sure.. When I mean make multiple calls, all you can do with the stock incredible is place a call, add a call and then conference it. You cannot put your first call on hold, make a second call and then go back to the first call. The phone app will only allow you to conference it. Also when you hit end calls its ends both calls..
The EVO does not have this problem, but it being on sprint perhaps they support it.. As both are CDMA networks I believe it should work with the incredible?
I would love a senseless rom with the stock android dialer. I would be ok with sense but the sense dialer is a pos. i just hate it.
If you have something like Dialer One installed, it's actually ok to delete HtcDialer.apk and HtcDialer.odex from /system/app. You can say goodbye to the Sense dialer. Even if you still use the Sense launcher, when you press Phone it will bring up Dialer One and will not fc on you.
I finally put together a stock nexus rom for the Inc, but I'm having the same issues as the cyanogenmod... says TCDMA64 at the top and the damn camera won't work... does anybody know how to properly deodex the stock apps from the Inc.? Try as I might I can't get it to work...
On a brighter note- it's fast, and light... just won't take pictures...

Kyocera Zio M6000 - on Cricket, Android 1.6

I was looking around for a thread for this phone, but found nothing. I hope people start working on it, I'd like to mod it.
Is there anything I can do to help, like dumping the rom? Do any of the current tools even work on it?
I read somewhere Kyocera was going to put out an upgrade to 2.1, bit I can't find anything besides a mention of that.
EDIT: FEB 22, 2011
NEW 2.2 THREAD
YES! It is actually out! For real!
EDIT: Jan 27, 2011
It was released (somewhere around page 76) that Android 2.2 would be released Late Feb to early March.
START NEW THREADS!
If you have questions other than modding, it would help to put it in a new thread with the prefix subject "Kyocera Zio M6000 - "
I figure if lots of threads pop up like that it would be more likely that they'd notice it and actually create it's own forum. If everything is just tagged onto this thread, then it will just get huge and unnavigable, and the mods won't notice enough activity.
Update:
hotaru was awesome enough to post a full dump of the Zio for us:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8907621&postcount=287
If you look around this thread you'll find info about rooting the phone. Also in this thread a port Clockwork Recovery was released. There are some issues with it that were not resolvable. Such as if you boot to Clockwork and don't actually reset the phone, it will lose the Cricket settings and revert to Verizon. So it will work to recover a ROM and backup, but you need to also need to reset or restore when you go there.
Wasn't sure where to post this since there is no HW section for this phone, so I put it here in hacking general...
Could someone create a forum for it and move this post to it?
EDIT:
To root the phone people have had success with 1-click root for N1
And the MSL# is 000000
The debug ACCESS CODE is #777468
A copy of the 1.6 rom here
Will update here with any usefull info.
Also, this thing has absolutely no multi-touch, even though all the blogs says it does.
For Tethering. PdaNet (I can't post any links cause i'm a new user, just do a Google Search and click "I'm Feeling Lucky")
Works like a Charm.
Currently Using the Free Version and it works GREAT.
Even has an SMS client built in so you can reply to your messages while your tethered.
Just make sure USB Debugging is on and you'll have no problem.
I also put in a request for a user group for this phone. I emailed one of the admins directly and he told me if they get enough requests they may create it.
What I have really been looking for is either a hacked up upgrade Rom to either enclair or group for this phone.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I second that motion. The seems to be the first legit prepaid android phone, and it isn't really getting any attention, anywhere :-/
Which I find quite odd. I personally have the EVO and love it but I did buy this phone for my girlfriend and she absolutely loves it and for a prepaid phone with a price point of 230 bucks you really cant beat it. Especially for 55 a month. I would think more people would be flocking to this. I have even considered giving up my evo for it but I do like the 4g. And the Build of the Evo is much higher quality.
Root
I think getting the thing rooted is important. All of the wifi tether apps require that. I read somewhere that someone had done it.
Do you find your girlfriend's Zio crashes when trying to watch video that you are opening from a link? Mine does every time :-(
Yup, lots of freezing, soft and hard.
I can't get rid of a "cdma: reorder" error after installing GoogleVoice. Now I can only make calls through GV or I'll get the error. I really need a better ROM, they better come out with 2.1 ASAP.
I also hope the no multitouch is only a sw issue and not a hw one.
i totally agree with you guys this phone needs some tweeking

Multitouch is something that is enabled in the kernel. I'm sure that the update to 2.1 will bring multi touch.
ROOTED!
The Zio can be rooted, download the file, email it to yourself, and open it on the phone. It is easy peasy ;-)
Paste this into the search up top: 1-click root for N1
(I would have posted the link but the forums rules won't allow me because...I don't have many posts?)
Wifi tether works like a champ.
No problems with my girlfriends phone I played with it for at least 2 or 3 hours when I first got it and eveything appeared to work fine. The only thing that I really didnt like was the factory keyboard I heard swiftkey got a major upgrade and was thinking about using it as a replacement especially cause it has the voice to text feature. And I may root her phone as well to give that wifi tether a shot. But what I would really like to see is some kind of upgrade to 2.X I think that it what will really make this phone shine.

Got my Zio rooted the same way, but now how do I enable Wifi tethering?
There is an app called "Barnacle Wifi Tethering", look it up in the app store. Once it is installed it is self explanatory,
If you like it, you should donate to the developers ;-)

Ah, there is an app called "ThickButtons", it's free, and it helps!

I second this motion.
Step 1: Download APN Backup & Restore from Market
Step 2: Open APN Backup & Restore
Step 3: Backup APNs
Step 4: Plug phone into computer with USB cable.
Step 5: Drag notification bar from the top, tap the USB connection notification, and Mount the SD card to your computer.
Step 6: Find the mounted drive on the computer (may be D:, E:, F:, G:, for example) by opening My Computer. Open it.
Step 7: Go into the APNBackup&Restore folder.
Step 8: Right click on your backed up APNs (maybe like 201009041233-apns.xml or something or whatever you named them when you did a Backup APNs)n
Step 9: Open with Notepad or Word Pad if it asks you.
Step 10: Highlight all text with your mouse, or use Ctrl + A to select all.
Step 11: After all text is highlighted, use Ctrl + C to copy the text OR go to the 'Edit' menu at the top with your mouse, and choose 'Copy'.
Step 12: Reply to this topic in this thread, right click in the text box where you type, and choose 'Paste'.
Step 13: Revel in good feelings as you provide very valuable help to the Android community.
Thank you ahead of time, if you are willing to help.
yea do that for sure! and also maybe somebody who has root can grab the mms.apk and .odex files too =\

[Q] Issues with G1 add account. please help.

So I installed the CyanogenMod-6 on my G1, and when I start the phone, it doesnt give me the "first time start-up" walkthrough, nor can i manually add an account in settings. it gives me a weird "add server info" page i've never seen before.
This also happened with Super-E, so I know it's not the ROM. I can't imagine what I could have done to the phone to make it glitch out like this.
It runs, I just cant add an account, or see certain button presses light up.
I searched through the forums but came across nothing. anyone got an idea?
thanks in advance.
I deeply apologize. it's late at night and I had never experienced the add account in the form of the exchange setup method.
I got it all figured out and it is running well. Once again, I apologize. Thread may be deleted.

Cool.. Just loaded it on vegan beta 5.1. Seems to work just fine. Don't know if I see any more stuff, but never really had a problem finding things with the other ones.
I do notice that the appearance seems crisper. Like maybe they are using a higher quality. Or, maybe not.
Still the same for me. Stars still truncated. Missing apps still missing.
The new apk is about 600 MBA larger than earlier one.
Jim
Just for fun I went ahead and did the market fix again. Didn't need to but I saw the earlier post and was curious. I never could get it to open after the first reboot. Had to reboot again. Then once it started working I have noticed more of the "android.process.acore" errors, and server errors then with the older one. I will be rolling back to a previous version myself since this doesn't seem to really make anything better.
I wonder if there should be an updated GoogleServicesFramework with this?

Kind of wonder that myself. Did you notice any difference in the look? Like a higher res look for the fonts? Or was I just seeing things? That would sort of make sense for the size difference of the file I guess..

Works for me
I'm running vegan 5.1 with pershoots latest kernel and here are my findings thus far. I backed up market with titanium and installed the update, immediately opened market. Everything looks to be there, I searched for a few things and installed one or two. I looked for adw and couldn't find it, I did see its themes but not the app. Rebooted, loaded up market no fc's, until I tried to roll back to previous version to look for adw because I am almost certain it was there before. Interestingly I did see appbrain which I've never been able to get before. Never tried market fix, and did not notice any image improvement. Anyone know for certain what to look for to see if it actually improves previous market? I'm going to try and fix my market now and will report back if anyone's interested.
I installed via the apk (there is also an update.zip available) and all working well. No reboot or clearing Google Services Framework required.
I had previously preformed the well documented market fixes but could never quite get the entire market. Everything appears to show up now.
I'm not sure it is complete I can't find a few things. But then again I found a bunch of things I couldn't find before either. Catch 22 yet again.
anyone else having a problem with 'Media Volume' not working after this update? The rocker doesn't work, I tried to go in the settings (I had to unmute and turn the system sound back up - no dice), I even tried to play a video and turn up the sound using the software controls within that program....nothing works.
How do I revert back? Where is the old .apk located?
....also had to turn my wi-fi on with each reboot, which is new.
Running Vegan5.1
I think it would be most helpful if you guys actually listed the names of the titles of the apps that you either DO or DO NOT see once you have tried this. Just might help in the troubleshooting aspect. For what its worth.
ckelly,
search xda for market or vending.apk and you will find many versions to play with
Volume corrected on reboot #2.
Wi-Fi still needs to be manually connected..
@sixvolt
Since this appears to not improve things, you must have had even less apps show up than we did and this update brought you to par with the rest of us. Everything is relative

Getting the 'Click' to work again.

Yes, I know that the filename is "Effect_Tick.ogg" located in /system/media/audio/ui. I also know that the 'setting' is in "Settings -> Sound and notification -> Other sounds". But for some reason, it just will not play.
Yeah, I like to hear that click when I press things on my phone(s). So much so, that I have kept the old ICS sound around to write it to my other phones since.
I'll try to make this short. I had my old Nexus 6 go into a bootloop about a year ago so I restored it with a factory flash and then re-rooted it and flashed my favorite Rom, Pure Nexus 5.1.1. It (the click) had worked before, but I do not know why it stopped working. There were other problems still on my phone so I finally bought a new one and flashed it to this ROM. I used MyBackupPro to restore my apps as I do not care for some of the newer version of apps that I use. I was also trying to flash the TBO market on my phone as well. When first I flashed my phone, the click was working, but somewhere along the line it stopped. If I use root explorer and go to the file's location and press on it, it will play just fine. So I'm just not sure what's up.
I did get a big hint. I installed "FP Click sound changer". Within that app, when I press on "Effect_Tick.ogg" I get the following message:
"java.lang.NullPointerException: Attempt to invoke virtual method 'void android.media.MediaPlayer.setAudioStreamType(int)' on a null object reference"
This leads me to believe that is is something inside of framework-res.apk or systemui.apk or something like that. I didn't see enough in build.prop to make me think it would be in there. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.
The error you're getting with FP Click Sound Changer is because the app likely isn't properly initialized. Meaning a change in Android between when the app was last updated and now has broken the app. The error has nothing to do with either of the .APK files you mentioned. If I recall correctly, neither system app deals with media to begin with.
The most obvious question here is whether you have tried a new copy of the audio file, even if it appears to work perfectly. If you have done that and are still having issues, one of your apps that you are using is causing the problem. You're going to have to do some troubleshooting to resolve this, namely starting with a blank slate and reinstalling apps one at a time until you find the one that causes the problem. Before you protest, any answers without you attempting some troubleshooting on your own are merely guesses made off of inadequate data.
Thank you for the reply, however my ROM was 'cooked' up on Sept 2015 and FP Click Sound changer was released/updated on Dec 26 2015, so what you suggest cannot be the cause. Besides, it only throws the error on Effect_Tick.ogg and no other system sound. And yes, I do have fresh copy of the file from ICS days.
But you are correct, if nobody knows which system app would throw that error message, then I know a fresh start is in order.
On this forum, many people have updated their N6 to more up-to-date versions of Android than the version you had. However, I wouldn't have provided that answer had you told us which version of Android you were running in the first place as well as the fact you built it yourself.
In any event, I hope your fresh start works out for you. You may also want to consider building a newer version of AOSP for yourself as well.
Thank you again for the reply, however:

Well, I certainly meant no offence. Some years back, I used to to help folks out with their Android phones/problems and would at times be about the same way as you. Many times the details were not there. However equally so sometimes, the OP did provide the answers but the others that would chime in did not seem to read all of them.
With that said, I was thinking about rewording my question to perhaps ask if anyone knew which system apps on Android 5.1.1 would call for Effect_Tick.ogg so I could try to find where it had been set to 'null', but I stumbled across my solution after all. File permissions. So for any readers:
Yes, using ES Explorer, I copied again my good Effect_Tick.ogg to /system/media/audio/ui and it still didn't work except in music player. So I thought since ES would allow me to see and change file permissions, let me take a look. Sure enough, the file permissions for Effect_Tick.ogg were different than all the other sounds in that location. It was set to rw,rw and group sdcard,s. All the others were rw,r,r and group root. Changed to match the others and problem solved. :highfive:
Thanks very much again for trying to help, at least someone (you) did and that does mean a lot to me on such an old(ish) device since as you said, many have moved on and/or flashed much newer versions of Android to the N6. :good::good:
I'm glad you solved your problem. Even better, you came back to tell us about it.
Too many find the solution and don't say anything.
