Repair Guy broke my SIM card slot? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I carelessly dropped my phone and cracked the AMOLED display underneath the touchscreen glass. I took it to have repaired, and called the place on the way there to confirm my arrival. I could barely make out the screen enough to place the call, but the screen was bleeding badly and almost unreadable.
Two hours later, I get the phone back good as new, but now the phone won't read the SIM card. The same SIM I took out of the phone two hours before that moment. I thought perhaps my SIM card had finally bought the farm, as it was old, but the Tmobile store replaced the SIM and the phone still wouldn't recognize it. I even placed an AT&T SIM in it (as the N1 is unlocked, of course) and that also didn't work.
Did the repair facility break another part of my phone as they were fixing my screen?

Why do people ask questions that nobody can possibly answer over the internet?
Maybe
More than likely
Take it back to them and stop waisting your time on the interweb.

I agree. If youve tested it already and it doesnt work what do you what us to tell you? You clearly already know where to get it repaired and how. Why dont you just call them and ask the repairman first?

LOL op failed.

As someone who has 1) taken apart and rebuilt cellphones and 2) dealt with hundreds of malfunctioning phones that didn't read SIM's, I'll give you some ACTUAL help.
1) remove the SIM and check for any missing pins in the slot. You can only see the first row of pins on the N1, but that's all you can see without taking the thing apart again. You should see 4 pins, but the one closest to the notched corner of the SIM doesn't really do anything.
2) If everything looks okay, reinsert the SIM, along with a couple pieces of paper. The idea is to press the SIM into the contacts in case the fit isn't as tight as before.
If you either see damaged pins in step 1 or step 2 didn't work, take it back to the repair guy. He broke it, he's obligated to fix it.

Set down phone after a non fatal looking drop, and no a no sim error. . .

I dropped it on my pants on top of carpet and now after I set it down it says no sim. . Could the connector be bad? Could the sim have broken? I looked nad there is NO visible damage to anything, not even the sim. . .
What should I do? I am not sure if I have rubbing alcohol to clean the sim up so what else?
Play stupid, go to the local corp store and have them test your SIM, even replace it to se if that's the problem.
Then if you have to call Warranty Replacement (assuming the phone is over 30 days old) you have a back-up story and they will see the SIM change on your account!
Oc course if the phone is within the 30 days then bring your box & receipt with you so the store can replace it!
Cool, thanks. One problem though. I got this in a trade from a guy and I don't know when he bought it.
If you have an AT&T-branded Tilt, then you are within your warranty period. The Tilt did not come out until early October 2007, and you have a 1 year warranty.

Maybe, the connector is just loose? Try putting some padding to make the contact tighter.
What if I have an unlocked AT&T branded Tilt... can I still get warranty?
I have the at&t tilt. So I will see what I can do tomorrow.
Try forcing the connector up more, Ive had plenty of problems where I had to put in an old sim to transfer contacts, and when I put my new sim in, it didnt detect it, rebooted etc.
But then I realized it goes *click* *click* to lock all the way.
Maybe the drop loosened the second click or something.
I will try, it wont read my moms sim and its a at&t wireless one, it didnt say invalid sim or anything, I don't want to break it. . .
I will try, if not warranty. What would I do and how since I am not the original purchaser.
WHOOOOHOOO! I was calm when this happened just so I don't over react, but I pushed it harder and its only one click but the click sounded louder than after it happened and vuala, service!
Thanks guys, but just in case . How would I go around doing it?
Call AT&T @ 1-800-801-1101 and follow the prompts. They will ask for your IMEI number to verify warranty status, and then they will ship you a new (err, refurbished) phone.

RMA & Tilt Return Question

I had to have my Tilt replaced because there is an issue with the sim card holder/contacts/whatever. Sim would lose contact with the phone as I moved it around, and randomly lose service and flash "no sim."
ANYWAY, the replacement they sent me has the full compliment of gear (charger, battery, spare stylus, etc)
Think I could get away with returning the original one, and keeping both batteries, or are they going to note that and charge me for it?
Whatever they give you, you must give back. I've been in the same case a couple times and i actually called the company and asked them. If i got an employee that said i can keep it, i'd keep it, if not return it. You're lucky they even sent you a whole package because they usually only send the Tilt with no back cover or battery and it's usually refurbished. Just do what's right.
I'd just send the device alone. If they moan, tell them you forgot about the rest and send it back... otherwise (likely), keep it
Moral Ethics
On one hand, my morals would say to be honest and give it back........ on the other hand...... they werent very moral in their decisions pertaining to the driver........
Tough call.
in the letter that they send it says to remove everything from your old phone..they arent going to charge you for it. when i got my tilt replaced i took the battery, stylus and charger and sent back jsut the phone and nothing happened

[Q] Spare part : sim reader

Hello,
Some days are better than others...
I managed to break several of the small metal pins in the sim reader, don't ask me how but I did it =(
I unmounted the phone and it's really just a small circuit board linked to the motherboard with a single ribbon
I have googled for where to find this spare part but no chance so far
Would you know where I could find this part and help me revive my Nexus S ?
Thanks for your help
Thanks for deleting my useless post : just found out a link in the post below !
Sorry =(
Did you find a solution ? My sim card reader (or sim card tray) is broken too and I can't find the replacement part to buy...
Couldn't you guys just do a warranty claim? It shouldn't break that easily unless you were messing with it.
I can't claim warranty since it's "customer induced damage" : needed to insert my sim card into an Ipad. Not willing to lose my micro sim adapter, I put it in the Nexus S without a sim in an tore the pins when taking it out
Moreover, I live in Europe and Samsung has after-sales per region, if not country. they would'nt accept an US purchased handset anyway.
Didn't find any trace of this spare part on any other site but globaldirectpart and it's still showing as "Coming soon"....
I am in Brazil and the phone hasn't arrived in here so Samsung Brasil don't touch it.... despite the fact that they are going to say that this is not covered by warranty.
I did not find anywhere else too...
How about insurance then? But I'm assuming you don't have that either or can't.
Good luck to finding the part though. Globaldirectpart seems to have a tendency of inflating price.

Don't have any insurance for my phones and it wouldn't work either cos I damaged the phone myself =)
I don't really mind the price since it would cost me about 50 euros including shipping due to the exchange rate between $ and €. Just missing my phone a lot and tired of waiting =)

here goes the replacement part right here but they are out of stock for now

Thanks but we've known that for weeks =)
The best part is the "Coming soon" !!!
Yep! We still waiting for the replacement part to be available... I read about a guy that replaced it with a Galaxy S part... but I did not figure out how.
I called a few suppliers in Asia but no luck so far
it's killing me to have my Nexus S in a drawer for a 10 bucks spare part =(
Yes, me too... that's why I love Apple and my iPhone... Samsung sucks... If I find it anywhere I will post it. I will try to find some more information about replacing it with Galaxy S part.
Do you have any link about this guy using the Galaxy S tray ?
update
Anyone have an update on this? I just broke one of the pins inside the sim tray as well....I am unable to find the parts anywhere online. This is driving me nuts....I'll even pay to repair it!
How did you break yours? I can see the op breaking his with an empty micro sim adapter, but if this is breaking from normal usage, that's not good..
Sent from my Nexus One using Tapatalk
Not yet. I've read that it is possible to replace it with the Galaxy S sim tray. I've bought one and I am waiting it to arrive. I should have it in one week.
It seems that this sim tray is not good at all...
Bad News! The Galaxy S connector is different from the Nexus S one. Look at the picture:
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
I believe that the guy who changed it, changed only the sim part, keeping the "sim board" the same... I don't know how to do it, I will try to find out, if anyone know, please help me.
if you read the post carefully, the guy did say sim tray, you can use most sim tray, as long as the pins are position 3+3 at each sides, but you must know how to solder/desolder.
Do you know how do I do it ? I know how to solder/desolder, but I don't know exactly what should I do.
Here is a picture of the Galaxy S Sim Tray. Should I desolder this points marked by the red arrow (and off course in the oposite side) and sold it to the Nexus S board ? Is the sim tray just fixed by this solded points ?

[Q] HTC One Water Damage

Hey everyone, this past weekend I dropped my HTC One in the toilet and apart from feeling like an idiot I have some issues. I quickly rinsed it off and put it in rice after I dropped it. This was on Saturday night and it is now Monday afternoon. The phone seems to be working fine apart from the SIM card. It is not reading my SIM card and I have tried using other SIM cards that I know are working. I get a little icon in the status bar with a SIM card and an exclamation mark. I have been reading and heard that a loose SIM is a common issue with these phones so I tried putting a small piece of paper in with the SIM and the tray in order to tighten things up in the phone-made no difference. I didn't really expect it too as I am more than certain it is because of the water damage. I am not entirely sure where the water damage indicator is but from what I have read I am assuming it is in behind the flash. In my flash I see a white square with a smaller yellow square on top of it-no red whatsoever. Is this the only water damage indicator on the phone??
I called HTC and they are sending me a new SIM tray to try with the phone. I am almost certain this is not going to help but I didnt want to tell the lady I dropped it in water so I went along with it. She said that if this doesnt work I can send my phone into HTC in order to have it repaired as it is still under warranty. I have heard that HTC service is a real pain in the ass...anyone have experience with them? I cannot send the phone back to my carrier as I bought it on eBay and I believe it is an AT&T phone as it has the AT&T symbol on the back--I am with ROGERS in Canada. I have contacted the person I bought it from in attempt to figure out where it was bought from and if he has proof of purchase. (He was also in Canada). He also said the phone was a factory unlock. I went to a repair shop today and they said they would probably be able to fix it for around $75. They also said there will be very slight damage along the edge from them opening up the case. (this doesnt really bother me, it sounded very minimal).
Anyways, I am probably going to wait for my SIM tray to come in than call HTC again when that doesnt fix the problem. I was told I would have to pay shipping to send my device to HTC but the repair and return would be covered. Before I send the phone away I want to be sure that the only water damage indicator on the HTC one is that in the camera flash. Can anyone confirm this? I am worried that HTC is going to tell me to go through my carrier in order to get a replacement but I guess I will figure that out in the next few days.
Just got my phone working again! Sprayed some compressed air in every one of the ports including the SIM and did a hard reset and right away it was working again

[Q] HTC One (M7) Water Damage- help

About 3 weeks ago I forgot my One was in my pocket and went at the water park after about 5 minutes I realized it was in my pocket and quickly took it out and kept it out in the sun to the best of my ability and put it in rice right away and kept it there for 5 days. After charging it and turning it back on, thankfully it was working perfectly. When I went to Verizon to get a new sim card, it would not recognize the sim card. So, the only problem with the phone was that the sim card reader was damaged. After looking at all my repair options I decided to send my phone to HTC for repair (mall repair guys said $90 dollars to replace the sim reader and so did HTC). So, now HTC got the phone and looked into it and the quote comes out to be $300 since they don't fix anything halfway and want to replace the screen casing and the motherboard. Later I contact customer support to make sense of the ridiculous quote and they escalate the issue. After talking to the escalation team they are only willing to lower the price to $150. My budget to get it fixed is $100
So, my question is is this a good deal? or can I get them to lower it more (if so how?) or are there any other options I can try? Thanks for your help.

$150 sounds like a great deal to repair a water damaged phone to me
I second that. Sounds very reasonable
