Time it takes to Root Official 2.1 - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Wondering if someone might have an idea of how long typically (weeks? month? never?) it will take someone to develop root access to the new official Sprint 2.1. I am a noob and should have done some reading before I had sprint update my phone. I really like the 2.1, but would like the app2sd and tethering. My mistake!
I know there is no definite answer, but just wondering..
Thanks

Well, EVO was rooted before it was released. Incredible is going on 3 months after release and its not rooted yet(Wow, that is surprising). Eris was 4 or 5 months...we were 2 or 3 months for the initial root...
It seems like there is one other phone that has been out for a while that doesn't have root yet...maybe the backflip?
You really can't at all put a time line on them, looking for a needle in a hay stack, or actually...an exploit in a kernel... is difficult. Especially since our kernel is fairly aged in linux years - everything has been patched. Right now I assume they have moved on to finding an undiscovered exploit some where.

Thanks Kcarpenter. Live and you learn....

difficulty in rooting mt3g over g1

When I rooted my g1 it took me about a full day to complete it and thats starting from not having a clue how to do it, downloading the files and going thru sever mistakes. I have it right where I want it now but I'm considering going to a mt3g. Is it more difficult to root a mt3g over the g1? Also which phone when rooted is better?

I personally like the G1 rooted over the MT3G. For some reason I would have the same roms on both devices and the G1 would always stomp the MT3G when it comes to performance.
The G1 is more grunt work to root (to root properly) as the MT3G now has the Relentless Rooter which will root the phone properly for you. The G1/MT3G had something like relentless rooter but it was the "one click root" and you couldn't install Cyan roms (didn't root properly).
The reason im considering the switch is because my g1 is beat to hell, dings, scratches etc.....does tmobie have any other phones comeing down the pipeline? I need a new one but root is a must!

There hasn't been any official word on what they're releasing. But I did find a lineup of HTC android models coming in 2010. I like everything I see here (especially the HTC Bravo ((please tmobile! please tmobile!))) but nothing with a physical keyboard (which I believe is becoming a thing of the past..boo)
I guess im looking for something more streamlined but i dont want to give up performance.
Yeah the bravo is what you're probably after then

Whats the Status of the Froyo rollout?

Hi there!
I finally got my N1 today. Imediately set up the SDK and started "working"...
One of the first things i tried today was installing the froyo update. Didn't get it to work.
The problem seems to be that my N1's build version is EPF30, which seem to be a "special" build for the german/european N1s.
Does anybody know when the Froyo will be available as an OTA update? I tried a manual checkin and update check so far ...
I know there IS a workaround which includes rooting and flashing an older stock rom, but I dont want to root it right now.
Thanks so far...
DerSeppel
Yeah, because searching for an answer in one of the million existing Froyo threads would have been hard.
There is no answer. It will be out when it's ready.
It will be out on 14 June to steal Apple's thunder.
In fact, I did search the forums before posting.
What I didnt quite understand was, IS Froyo already being rolled out or not?
It's apparently going through "final testing" so probably end of this week or next week.
It's being RC tested internally, not being pushed out to consumers yet.
Sounds good ... are there any experiences with the rollout duration?
How long might one have to wait to be scheduled for the OTA in the worst case?
I want to start using the C2DM service which requires 2.2 at least.
moved to q&a
i have a very strong feeling that it just might be released on the same day as the new iPhone.
google may just try and steal some of apple's thunder on that day.
No point in even attempting a release same day as the iPhone release. The news will just get buried.

I need some help getting froyo on my sgs

Hello everyone!! My name is Dimitris and I am 15 years old. I'm new to this forum and also new to the android world. I spend a lot of time on mobile phones. I had a Nokia N82 and I learnt almost everything about symbian os. But now it's old and I decided to go for a new phone. After long research i decided to buy the samsung galaxy s. i'm pretty happy with it so far. but i need some help to learn more about the android os. and by that i mean the hacks and mods that exist. 1st of all i want to put froyo on it. can someone help me root my phone and then flash it with the best froyo rom so far? I know that this must have been already asked. but couldn't find anything... also i'm gonna make more questions in this thread. any answer will be appreciated
i suggest u look further in the rom section because there are enough tutorials on how to root your phone and how to flash a custom rom on it
search and u will find.
My two cents: wait for the official froyo update. The froyo versions out there are still quite raw.

yup it is so raw, that will make the phone work like a piece of junk, you are better off with the stable ROMs that are currently avaialble
A lot of froyo stuff seems to have been backported by Samsung anyway (such as Highmem support it seems). You need to ask yourself why you need froyo specifically. It's due so soon though, it probably isn't worth the effort
Thank you for your replies. First of all I want to improve my phones batery life because I currently sucks. Also I want the voice to text thing that other phones that you say something and it turns it to text. Also I want a button at the samsungs keyboard to change between english and greek language fast like on the iphone. Finally I would like to know if there are any cool apps or widgets that I should install mostly for social networking.
yes, STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM FROYO BETAS!!! It will most likely break your phone!. Wait for OFFICIAL release next week
FROYO BETA's won't break your phone. PM me if you need further help.

It's trashed some people's IMEI's. So if your phone is more than a toy, you are still best off only using the official firmware
Meh, I don't see why it could trash your IMEI if you follow instructions carefully. And backup your nv_data.bin as I do. And ofc, your phone is unlocked!
The problem is, if you don't, your phone will be permanently messed up. It isn't worth it, unless you are using your phone as a toy.
You certainly can't say it wont break your phone, unlike normal flashing, there is risk involved...
Just wait for the official froyo release. Are you so much in a rush for froyo to put your phone to some risk? A week or two and froyo will be out. Migh as well wait.

IS Root a possibility or ????

Ok so Im no genius like most of u are in here, but this is my 3rd HTC device and the only one which doesnt have root or custom roms so far. I just wanted to ask if you guys believe that there will be root for s-off or custom roms any sooner or is it wort hit just to buy an Atrix?? I need your opinion, please and thank you?
P.S: If any of you don't feel like answering or sharing your opinion & wanna be a smart-bottom by directing me to a link or by asking me to google it my humble request is to keep ur 0.2cents to yourself & learn to be humble and caring. Thanks.
yes. and if you had read through threads about root then you would already know that s-off IS devices have been rooted some time ago. custom roms are around but very few and not very good. the problem is getting s-off for root available for for those of us who dont have s-off by default or have access to an xtc clip to s-off our IS's.
p.s. nothings impossible on xda dev ^o^
p.p.s. if you dont need the power then considering IS gingerbread update is flowing out now id say its more than enough. unless ofcourse your given an awsome deal on the atrix
Remember that Incredible 2 is out now and is amajor phone on Verizon. This will be a popular phone and I have faith that XDA members here will find a way to put S-Off.
I sure hope someone takes it upon themselves to get the Incredible 2/S off the ground. I love the phone, solid as a rock, and fast, but I'd really like to eventually be able to over/undervolt, flash minus-bloatware roms, etc.

Upgrade to Gingerbread and run Gingerbreak. There you go.. root!!
I used SOC-1.9.x with factory 2.2.1 and it worked out. But the Superuser kept crashing while root permissions were being asked by apps. Found a workaround: cleaning the Superuser data each time I wanted to run an app.. but that's lame.
I'm in the same boat as the op... will be upgrading in the next month and with BELL... so the only 2 phones im looking are the incredible or the atrix...
i like htc and if i get the IS, this will be my 3rd htc with sleak UI and stable without too much bloatware and standard hardware ( by today's std ) , no root as of yet.
vs the atrix top of the line hardware and futureproof ( well at least for the next yr before new lines of multicores phones) but major bloatware which cannot be uninstalled, locked bootloader so cant get rid of those bloatwares.. apparently some ppl experiencing lags (something which i would never believe until i saw some videos) with the live wallpaper...
At this point, i would tend to get the IS but if both can be flashed with a custom rom ( ie. without motoblur **** ), i would jump on the atrix

are you referring to rooting the atrix?
the biggest problem we will find is that although the device is popular, it's a midrange android device, and many of the developers are not picking it up to work on it. after all when there are high end devices around the corner, why would they?

Right. There's a few problems:
1) Lots are holding out on Sensation
2) IS is a midrange device making it only semipopular. HTC has a solid lineup, but this divides forces. If you take Samsung where they had the SGS 1 and SGS2 this year, that's basically their main lineup. Expect concentrated development, but I don't know what to expect here.
3) Not sure for me whether I should pick up an IS or wait for Sensation. I'd have to wait for an 850/1900 sensation and nothing's even announced yet... so given that it's usually a minimal 3 months delay, I won't be getting this phone til close to Christmas I bet.... sigh.
Basically we're in no mans land.

If your phone is S-On, the Gingerbreak don't give you ROOT, even if you upgraded to the official 2.3 Ginderbread.
To get S-Off you need a XTC-Clips.
thanks for all your opinions fellas! for the sights and sound feels like IS didn't appeal alot to the devs so Im guessing there wont be any development on IS, so it seems wise to say good bye to IS until a new HTC device comes out & perhaps its time to say hello to the Atrix as it's got custom rom and it was rooted before it even came out. But Thanks anyways,...Imma put up my phone for sale, Im in Toronto, Canada If any one interested please PM me. Thanks.

[Q] Just got my HTC ONE Dev Edition

Just got my HTC One Dev Edition yesterday, been playing with it all night and LOVE IT. I've been an android user for the past 3 years and have rooted, crack flashed all my phones, though I must admit I have slowed down with the flashing looking for more stability and just don't have time to research as much as I used to.
BUT this is the first phone that I don't feel the need to root and flash. I'm fully on stock for now and liking sense, but will install Nova for my configuration.
Got a couple of questions and want to know your opinion:
1) HTC Backup or leave it google backup
2) How are you liking blinkfeed? I'm loving it.
3) For HTC one email, do you leave it smartsync or push for work Exchange emails
4) Any tweaks or performance enhancements I should know of?
Thanks for any opinion!
Don't be in a hurry to make changes to it.
Take your time, get to know the phone as it shipped.
I starting hanging around these forums weeks before I first got my dev edition, then started chiming in on a lot of conversations but still didn't make a single change to the phone for a month.
What I learned during that time was how great this phone is out of box. So much activity around here is just so unnecessary. All the ROMs mods tweaks and especially the obsession with getting OTA updates before they are officially released to your particular model or country. Really?
I did every last thing a person can do to an Evo. I've done swap partitions, init.d scripts, smali edits, undrervolts, overclocks, kitchen cooked my own ROMs, run jelly bean on a phone that shipped with eclair, basically everything short of compiling my own kernel from source.
Why? because each one taught me something about android and occasionally - very occasionally - made a material improvement to the value I got out of the phone.
I have no such motivation on the One.
In four months the only change I've made to the phone that I feel like made any improvement was updating to a newer camera. Don't need root, don't need a recovery, don't need splash screens HBOOTs radios or firmwares and I sure as hell don't need a new CID. Honestly the only reason I did S-OFF is you never know when the exploits will get patched.
That's just one guy's feeling about the phone.
So my thought is take it slow. Hang around here awhile to see what is possible, what people care about, and use the phone for awhile to see if there's anything about it you just have to change.
You may be surprised how long it takes before you have to scratch the itch.
