Whats the Status of the Froyo rollout? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there!
I finally got my N1 today. Imediately set up the SDK and started "working"...
One of the first things i tried today was installing the froyo update. Didn't get it to work.
The problem seems to be that my N1's build version is EPF30, which seem to be a "special" build for the german/european N1s.
Does anybody know when the Froyo will be available as an OTA update? I tried a manual checkin and update check so far ...
I know there IS a workaround which includes rooting and flashing an older stock rom, but I dont want to root it right now.
Thanks so far...
DerSeppel

Yeah, because searching for an answer in one of the million existing Froyo threads would have been hard.
There is no answer. It will be out when it's ready.

It will be out on 14 June to steal Apple's thunder.

In fact, I did search the forums before posting.
What I didnt quite understand was, IS Froyo already being rolled out or not?

It's apparently going through "final testing" so probably end of this week or next week.
It's being RC tested internally, not being pushed out to consumers yet.

Sounds good ... are there any experiences with the rollout duration?
How long might one have to wait to be scheduled for the OTA in the worst case?
I want to start using the C2DM service which requires 2.2 at least.

moved to q&a

i have a very strong feeling that it just might be released on the same day as the new iPhone.
google may just try and steal some of apple's thunder on that day.

No point in even attempting a release same day as the iPhone release. The news will just get buried.

Is Froyo (FRF50) official - or just an "accident"?

I have updated my stock 2.1 N1 to Froyo (Build FRF50) manually. I'm wondering, though, if this release is really meant to be the official, final Google-supported update.
Is there any word from Google (except for MG Siegler's "The roll out to Nexus One devices has begun!" over at Seeking Alpha) that this is the one?
Same question here. Also if this turns out to be a pre released update, can the stock N1 be updated to a official version?
from what i understand there is no actual official word. That said im loving froyo: As with previous updates, froyo added features and bug fixes and also brought some new issues, so if you are thinking maybe its not official because of some bugs, to me that wouldnt be sufficient evidence: I havent experienced any of the complaints save one- Anyone else having the phone randomly go to sleep and not wake up?
The scrolling,
updated native apps (youtube is amazing now),
overall speed increase,
awesome camera/camcorder updates,
very smooth BETA flash,
simple and effective tethering,
fantastic new setting options throughout the OS,
left AND right rotating
updated UI (love the phone/app drawr/ browser buttons)
and im sure im forgetting stuff...All extremely awesome features and my personal new issues of freezing and hard sleep i can live with i just hope they arent harmful.
i't doesn't feel like a complete FroYo. I have little bugs that i noticed. screen goes black and don't go on anymore, have to take out battery. When the phone is in the charger and i'm playing with it, It gets really really hot.
The new features are great i miss some CM tweaks The UI was a little different at the IO so maybe there will be more surprises?
this was a prerelease to the developer holiday phone the official is coming out around the 29th of may and will continue to roll out till all nexus ones have the update

How do you know this? also will we get that update too?
Well the "leaked" URL was pulled, wasn't it?
this was very likely to be a pre test release. I've looked into the build.prop and there are signs that it is a test release as the word test appears several times throughout.
Given the silence from Google, and the subsequent removal of the link, I suspect this was an accident... meant it to go to a select few whilst forgetting how easy it was to distribute the location of the update.zip.
Wouldn't bother me any if this was the official ... its flawless for me. No freezes or any wierd stuff. Pure froyoness

So the link is gone than it's definitely a accident.
I'm gonna say this ain't the final release. But I doubt it'll be any diff. How much more could they fix or improve from the accidental release to the real one.... I bet the same bugs people are seeing now will be present in the final...
Nothing's perfect
Except for me.lol no issues
oh dear... not so good if this is true!
I spose people on here flashed the update.zips from xda?
Hopefully Google will push out the live update now certainly with the potential problems people could be getting
No, I flashed with the file direct from Google before the link was pulled.
So it's all over the news Nexus has froyo now but has anyone with a legit locked stock phone actually gotten it? Like one of the ATT folks?
Anyone have any links to some real clarification on this?
No stock AT&T/Vodafone customer can get it yet.

No, I am one of the many AT&T folks that is still waiting for the official release from Google. I have a 3 week old N1 that is still stock and with locked boot loader, and I have no problems waiting, as I am not ready to root my new N1 just yet.
the official will we the frf86 as seen in a couple threads this version will work fine for the holiday version of the nexus one . i tried it on both the holiday nexus one and the official release of the nexus one and it runs better for some reason on the holiday version
Where are you getting all the info from?
Is there likely to be much added between FRF50 and FRF86?
How SO we know if its a holiday one?

android 2.2???

i was just curious if the hero was getting the 2.2 update? doesnt look like much of a difference but im still curious
It is highly unlikely that we will see an official release of 2.2, but the devs here on this forum will try to work on it. darchstar has already stated that when the 2.2 source is released and implemented into Cyanogen mod, he will port it over.
While it might seem that different, there are a lot of major changes, especially in speeed. The Market has an autoupdate feature in 2.2, Apps2SD is built in (but, I assume, it's not based on our same Apps2SD. Just the same function), and JIT is fully functioning and working as it should. The Nexus One running 2.2 runs almost 8 times faster than it does with 2.1, or so I've been told.
lol, let the 2.2 threads begin....
We barely got 2.1.
Im sure after the devs get froyo working, sprint will steal it, mod it slightly, leak it back out to the devs for them to tweak, and us to test, then sprint will release it officially about 6 months later, blaming htc for the hold up and it will still have tons of problems. Then the devs will figure out how to root it and sprint/htc will put out a update almost the next day to patch the root exploit.
Anyone else have a idea?

Nope. I would, however, say it would be pretty Xtreme
I would love to see 2.2 on my Hero. Especially because that would mean I could go into Sprint and show them that my Hero is running faster than their EVO
thanks for the feedback guys. yeah i was watching videos of the nexus one running 2.2 and that thing was blazing fast!!!
i sent HTC a message last night asking if the hero was going to get the 2.2 release and this was there response...
(Hello Chris, Thank you for taking the time to contact HTC America Technical Support about your device. Before releasing a ROM update we have to be sure that the software is going to work properly on your hardware and on your carrier’s network. This testing does take some time but will result in an update that is optimized to work on your device and on your carrier’s network. While we want to release software as soon as we can we will only do so once the software has passed our quality standards. At this time we do not have any information about an update for your device. When the update is released it will be announced on HTC.com.)

FroYo update for EPF30 build?

Anyone know when the update is available for OTA EPF30 build?
No, because we're not Google.
I have EPF30, and I have taken the somewhat radical measure today, of realising that there is more to life than FROYO, I have a great Nexus phone, and at some point in the near future, google will update it - and I will love it. It's not as if my phone is a crippled hunk of junk on 2.1, so chill out everyone and enjoy the weather!
It's damn sunny here in the UK and I am off to the park with my 3yr old daughter
mine is the same build from UK Vodafone, this is what they said on their forum:
Build EPF21B was the original launch build, but we approved an update to this which fixes an MMS resizing issue, on the 7th of March - that update is build EPF30. They are both approved for use on Vodafone UK.
If you get a handset running EPF21B, it is likely that you'll receive a firmware update soon after over-the-air.

So EPF21B will get it very soon, but looks like it may be delayed for EPF30?
Looking around various forums, you dont see EPF30 mentioned too often, as I found out when trying to root, so not expecting anything too soon.....
Also this statement would suggest further delays:
Whilst there is no Vodafone software installed in the firmware, the releases for the Nexus One still require testing and approval before we can make them available.
Once we've approved the release, we let Google know and they send it out directly from their servers.

How blooming long to get if from google, have a test period, approve it then wait again for the OTA ??
Vodafone adding unnecessary delays for no reason, Google see it fit for release, if Vodafone don't add stuff, why do they need to approve it too??

I have the same build... NL Vodafone...it seems that EPF30 is the European version (when you look at the languages).
I would however interpret your originel quote quite differently. It seems to me they mean to say that if you are on EPF21B you will soon receive EPF30. Otherwise it doesn't really make sense, does it? If EPF30 is an update to EPF21B it would be strange to get the Froyo update soon on the older build ???
I do find it very odd (and unbelievable) that Vodafone would have to approve the Froyo build first :-s
seems that the only possible thing is wait

That was just an assumption on my part, purely because there doesn't seem to be many with this build, but several have the older one. mainly because when I tried to root using modoco superboot the EPF30 was non existant. Just scaring myself really in case it gets overlooked by mistake

the best solution to this problem is 1.) root the N1 2.) go drinking beers with your friends 3.) after as drunk as a newt you can test an other mod every day.

Can confirm that the following thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=710519 works on my UK vodafone Nexus EPF30, I am now running FRF50 and about to update to FRF83
Hmm interesting, very tempting. I assume that when running EPE54B one would get the OTA update to Froyo sooner as with EPF30?
Question: localisation...is it just the language or? (sorry if this sounds very newbie )
I'm a noob myself so not sure what you mean. UK Vodafone had no specific customizations and came unlocked as well.
Running Kangorama Froyo now and no problems whatsoever.
I'll try to clarify: it seems that EPF30 is just a European version of the eclaire build. I mean: it includes locales (I think it's called) for, mainly, European countries/languages. What i'm wondering is if those locales do anything besides changing the language of the OS? Or do they also include the dictionary and such. I assume it doesn't (since I use the locale setting English UK) and still use a Dutch dictionary as well.
I'm just not sure...but if the locale is only the OS language then I'm gonna update...don't wanna wait on Froyo because they don't have the European locales build in yet.
Okay google i've finished my beers, bring me that update

Waiting for the EPF30 --> FRF85B
Same here...although thinking of installing the 'stock' stock 2.1 (and then a manual update to Froyo). Pretty sure I don't use the 'locale's' of the European build anyways.
Friend got her update this morning. Although she couldn't tell me if she was on EPF30 or not :-( (women )
Hmmm, we have to be patient
============================
Nexus One customers that bought the phone from Vodafone will be getting Froyo, albeit a little delayed. We have to make a few changes to Froyo to optimize it for the Vodafone network (small stuff around Emergency calling, etc.), so it will take at least another couple of weeks (changes + testing).
Apologize for the extra delay, but please understand that this is a large scale deployment with lots of intricacies and we have to be prudent. I can assure you that we are striving hard to get Froyo out to all Nexus One customers ASAP.
Thanks for your continued support!

NOOK Color’s update to Android OS 2.2/Froyo

B&N Update Next Week?
Just showing you the link:
http://androidos.in/2011/04/nook-co...-update-on-april-25-froyo-incoming-with-apps/
Doubt it. Would be all over the internet if it was (Engadget etc). Seems like a shady site.
I saw the same thread earlier today on the Barnes and Noble site.
I cannot post the link but title of the thread is "Monday it is"
http://bookclubs.barnesandnoble.com/t5/NOOKcolor-General-Discussion/Monday-it-is/td-p/970372
Look at post #6 in that thread. "Go to B&N if you need help with anything." Yeah right im going to make a trip to Barnes and Noble and tell a representative that i don't fully understand how to use the new update LOL.
I too heard the chatter, it might actually be monday. Let's hope they come out with a newer kernel. The one we have is kind of getting old.
I just hope the update contains something of use to the community that it doesn't already know -- like being able to use Bluetooth beyond a couple of feet.
Just as interesting as the date is the content. If you keep reading that thread, you get a link to another thread where they say a manager actually saw (and shared) the update: She shared what she saw....WOW. Flash, new PDF and lots of aps.
Monday will be interesting: if the updates actually comes, will it manage to get past the OTA blocking?
Just calm down and relax,if you're looking on the B&N Community board there's daily some folks that fool around those update.
Does anyone know if this update could maybe increase app compatibilty due to an official update to froyo such as Homerun battle when we get it rooted with android market and/or sideloading? Cause that would be the only reason I'd have for updating.
It will be interesting
Agree. It will be what it will be. But to be on the safe side, I've flashed back to stock 1.1.0 for a couple people at work who rooted. That should allow the OTA (whatever it will be) to install as BN designs.
And so it goes....
I really hope it's 2.2 and not 2.1 with an app store. I wonder if they're going to release a new kernel (and its source)? That would really help out the CM7 people...
I would think the likelihood of an update this week is very high. Remember they're taking on a major retail partner in Staples starting May 1st. If they have an update, they would want to make sure that it's finished before Staples start selling them, it'd make things a lot easier for their new partner.

Where did you hear/read this?
I think one of the most exciting features of the upcoming update will be an official froyo build that will have full aceess to all of the internal storage. That and an overclocked kernel plus being rooted will be pretty damn awesome in my opinion. I can't wait, time to backup my nook and revert to stock in preparation.

Straight from a BN press release
http://www.barnesandnobleinc.com/pr...aples_announces_plans_to_sell_nook_color.html
Also the fiscal year for BN ends on 4/30. There may be things you want announced before year end or if it is bad news after year end. The NC product distribution strategy is beginning to resemble the Apple one. However, BN does not have its app developer support strategy in place.
Auto Update came through today (despite devicemanager editing and OTA certs renaming)
I was using my nook today, when all of a sudden a B&N permissions dialog screen popped up (specifically, it said something like "permissions error, rebooting". Then it rebooted into clockwork(???) which formated my data and cache partitions, pulled up a list of errors trying to change other things (possibly because I am rooted with an OC kernel?), and then rebooted.
Despite this, it managed to reboot into stock. I didn't get any further than the setup, before I decided to flash my nandroid backup. I'm actually kind of regretting that a bit now, since it would have been interesting to see what the new stock was like (presuming it worked correctly), but ultimately, I think it is probably best to wait for XDA to tell me what to do about updating or otherwise. In the meantime I'll be leaving my wifi off.
I've been debating upgrading to CM7, but the sleep / battery issue has prevented me. If this update really is froyo, and the devs here get it rooted nicely soon, I may not make that step at all, or at the least I may be able to wait much longer for the sleep issue to be fixed.
Also of interest is the fact that I had renamed the OTA certs and used sqlite editor to tweak the devicemanager.db file. I don't recall if I had spoofed the build.prop or not. But this seems to imply that we don't really have any reliable way of preventing OTA updates at this point, other than installing a completely new rom. That alone might be enough to warrant switching to CM7. I'm so confused!
I'll have to grab my NC and turn it off and take out the sd card.
I don't think I've turned it off for a couple of weeks...running CM7.
Nothing new showing up here yet:
http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/nookcolor-support-software-update/379002520/?cds2Pid=35758
CM7 won't auto-update, will it? I was running stock 1.0 rooted (and now that I've flashed my nandroid backup, I am again, though I lost two weeks worth of tweaking).

When are we get gingerbread back??

I haven't even heard any rumors about expected re-release date for gingerbread.
I was sure we were gonna get our gb back within two to three weeks, but my faith is fading very rapidly now.
Some people are expecting mid-May for re-release.
What you guys reckon?
I reckon G00glez took their G1ng3rbr3ads back and are not going to release it again until 24 hours goes by without someone creating a thread and asking about it.

Patent Infringements? Seriously?
Unless there is a court order restraining Google from distributing Android, which there is NOT nor will there be in the future in my opinion, there is no way they would have pulled the release based on patent issues, which are never ending anyway for all companies these days. Also, GB HAS been released for other devices, including the Nexus S.
I would say it is far more likely to have been due to carrier integration problems, or that they recalled it to fix a relatively minor issue, such as the camera fix that was rumored, and the fix ended up breaking something else, and fixing that killed the wifi and so on and so on.
As it is JVB seemed a bit underdone for a final release. Hopefully we will get a better version all around, once they get around to putting it back in Kies. Could happen tomorrow, could happen next month....who knows. In the mean time, several of the custom versions are maturing nicely and the Kitchen is soon to move GB from beta to mainstream...so be happy and try those.
Samsung apps is offering an update. No serious change, but might be a sign for rerelease.

AFAIK that was debunked.
Nobody knows
I haven't heard any truly plausible reasons for taking Gingerbread of Kies again. I am currently running the Kies version (JVB) of Gingerbread and compared to the earlier Samsung releases the JVB is a dream to run on.
Yes there may be bugs in it, though I personally haven't run into to any yet, but all of the official realeses I have run so far, has had bugs in them, so no change there.
The only reason I can see to hold it back is that they are waiting until the SGS2 to come to market, so they don't have to compete with there own product.
Thats my two cents.
Small update
I can tell you that the official release date of the SGS2 from one of the major carriers in denmark (TDC) is week 19 (the 9th to the 15th of may), which accidentally coinsides with the releasedate of branded Gingerbread on the SGS in Scandinavia.
