How to use navigation? [solved itself] - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
how do i properly use (car) navigation?
I choose "car home" and then put in a destination.
I get the directions then and also can get a map overview where my route is displayed.
But how do i get a 3D Street view, 3D real street view or at least the map with my route pointing in the direction i have to go and follow the route?
Can't get that to work somehow...
Thanks for your help!

Are you in the US or the UK? If not, then no official Navigation for you I'm afraid (although you can install [brut]Maps and gain most of the functionality.
When you get the directions list, underneath 'Show on map' should be a 'Navigate' option. An easy test is to just fire up the voice search and state: "Navigate to the nearest McDonalds" and see what happens.

Tap on the top left of the screen, (the direction arrow of your next step).
Then press the little man on the right, it will switch to 3D Street View mode

I'm in germany and i do not have any little man.
I guess there are not many cities with street map here if any!
But i can not setup maps to follow the route or rotate the map to the direction, making it very difficult to use it for driving assistance.
Is there any way (app) to get a workaround?
I just need google maps in 3D or rotate the map to the direction.

Yes, install [brut]Maps (or install Nav Launcher from the market and let it do it for you) and that will allow navigation.

both not available for me

just got information that it is available in germany too with this day, hurray!

New Google Maps Mobile!

version 1.7.1.4 nice new look
http://mobile.google.com
Loaded and can't say I see much difference? Are the satellite views now hibrid, not sure if street names were on them before. Other than that I don't see the "new".
new directions view - turn by turn list with option to view map turn by turn
new transition slide to next direction
new iphone-esque plop down of location pin (callout)
new context menu for locations - click on a pizza shop after searching
new hybrid satellite view
new landmark labels in above view
double click to zoom (might have been in previous versions)
more
did you even use it for more than 10 seconds?

ummmm, well... yes, but obviously not enough, maybe 5 minutes. I did a simple search for FedEx Kinkos and I guess I missed the "Plop down". These are all great additions, it was just subtle to me. I've been using Live Search more and forgot the details of Google.
I wish Both Google and Live Search could add a "Heading Up" choice for mobile use and perhaps some hot key mapping.
I love Google. I wish I had held onto what I bought of it when it was $86/ share.
Why can't they add an "Update Available" option as on Live Search?

Uploaded it for you guys :

working great on my Kasier.
Enjoy,
NAdavi
whats the difference with this one?
...but doesn't exist an app like GPSTuner but that download/use/cache GoogleMaps images, and draw on it tracks, waypoints ecc ecc???
GpsTuner can use google maps, but you have to download it with the pc, then calibrate it. Will be fine if GPSTuner download in auto google maps images and draw on it
Looks like they integrated the "find location" and "find buisness" into one search function
The directions overview is different
seems a lil faster, but still no drag and drop re-routing. it would also be nice if the program didn't kill itself if I lost data for a sec
edit: I see this was covered in another thread
If Google would just add voice.... WOW!

Hmm, I'd say yes and no. I had to retry once before it aquired a lock. They've increased it, but it needs to be a little longer for a cold start I think.
Hi!
the previous version put me within 10 feet of where I was standing,
the new version, with my standing in the same place, puts me more than 50 feet away !
I am sure someone into GPS can explain better than I can....

That could just be coincidence. The precision of your location is a function of how many satellites your GPS unit has a lock on at any given moment. To really compare, you'd have to have made sure that a similar number of satellite locks were achieved when the measurement is made. And just cuz you are in the same spot doesn't guarantee that you had the same number.
I guess its possible that somehow the new version is "screwed up", but not as likely as the explanation above.
Oh, and yes it does seem like the GPS timeout issue is resolved or at least MUCH better. I hadn't used my GPS on my Kaiser in a few days, and yesterday, I was able to just test the "track my location" feature in the new Google maps. It waited for about a minute for the GPS to start up and get sat locks, then showed my location. So it didn't even ask me to retry. It just worked. The previous version would never do this.
But alas, no voice feature like in Live yet, but still its an improvement.
woudl you guys switch from live search to this new version?
I have installed and use both. Personally, i like Google's better for most purposes. Its a simpler, cleaner interface, with much less clicks req'd. So, I can use it while on the road more easily. Live is more robust, esp with the new voice and gas features. but it bothers me that I have to tap so many times just to get a map of some place.
Is there any way to have the map auto rotate when you are using GPS so you are always traveling UP on the screen?

Not that I know of, in either app. Only true route guidance apps, like TomTom or TeleNav do that currently...

Google Maps GPS doesn't move with map while driving

Any one know what I am doing wrong with my phone? When I drive with google maps and get the gps working and everything the little blue dot moves along the way but doesn't scroll the screen over while I'm moving, I have to move it myself. Am I doing something wrong here or pressing something I shouldn't that deactivates it? Let me know.
thanks much
I think I've seen this happen if you scroll the screen yourself, I think there's some way to center the display or such and it'll then follow. Otherwise you're panned and it doesn't move.
This is a good thing if you want to pan the map to look at something and don't want it flipping back to your GPS location immediately.
I've yet to use Google Maps with a GPS honestly, because I have iGO and TomTom so it's possible there's a bug I haven't seen, but that's how it's "supposed" to work.

No, you're not doing anything wrong. For google maps, once the blinking blue dot, (your location), is centralized on your screen, it will move as you move, as long as your location (blinking blue dot) is centralized.
If you happen to, let's say, use your stylus or finger to move the screen to view surrounding area, and de-centralize the blinking blue dot in the process, it will not re-center itself. But it's still navigating though.
You'll have to centralize the blinking blue dot (your location) by going in 'menu', and select "My Location". Hope this helps

Also,if you can see the blue dot on your screen, double tab the dot. It will re-center it and start following again.

Terracrosser - GPS TOOL

I had found this pretty cool GPS tool (www.terracrosser.com), yet it's zooming does not work on HTC Diamond. I had tried to modify registry fot scrolling wheel, but I was only able to scroll the map up and down, not to zoom.
Any help would be great.
Here is the way to registry:
HKLM/Software/HTC/SmartTouch/Terracrosser/
classname (string): #NETCF_AGL_BASE_
Mode (dword): 4
WheelCount (dword): 2
The website contains little to no information.
What does this app do?
How does it differ to Google maps?
Can it grab a map of Paris for me for me to use offline in the future?
I don't understand, it uses gps to show your location with maps from google maps.... So basically it's just google maps?

Looks like it, read the .PDF on download page
So it appears. Try using Google Maps for the Diamond instead of Terracrosser.
Damn, what a nice tool, I will certanly keep that in mind!
I have searched for a proper solution to download the google maps for a long time... that saves me a lot gprs costs
Nice tool, hoe they gonna fix the zoom-bug, then it'll be just perfect!
Not really usable for the moment but, if I understand well the documentation, the tool Mapper (wich crashes for me) should be able to save maps with different zoom levels and that would be great ! Touch screen and jog dial navgation would also be great...
I'll keep an eye on this...
so how easy would it be to download maps for offline viewing.
Can I tell it to just 'go fetch maps for Paris' and that will be enough? Thats the sort of solution I would need, a list of cities and I 'check off' which ones I would want it to download and cache

I have tested the mapper for some minutes, i am at work, so not much time to do it in detail
You have to zoom to the area you want to download by yourself, after that you choose how many zoomleves are to be saved and the rest dows the program on its own. Quite simple in my opinion.
But a feature to enter the city you want to download would be great, too
Perhabs it'll be added in the near future. It#s the first official version of this tool, as I have read on the page.
sorry but how can I control the program. I`ve added the necessary reg keys to navigate with hw keys but I can not zoom. stylus navigation isn`t supported?
Beta tester wanted
Hello!
If anybody want to betatest Terracrosser for HTC Diamond, please contact "mail at terracrosser dot com".
Thank you,
Nitisara
New Zooming method
Please use version 1.0.1 - touch screen zooming implemented (read User manual).
Great program, just what a lot of people have been after.
Why has it taken so long for someone to actually make an offline/cached map viewer??!?! I wouldn't have thought it would be that difficult!
I'm having a few problems with the software that I will try and solve, hopefully this keeps getting better!
what happened to Terracrosser.com??
I get a "server stoped" message when I go to the url where terracrosser was previously found
http://www.terracrosser.com
Site Not Working
Same problem for me also. Nitisara please make the site work so we can download the latest version of terracrosser.
Loved it in Cuba.
It's a pitty that the site is down.
Luckily I already grabbed a version. And I used it in Cuba
As far as I know there are no GPS-maps available because that is not allowed.
But Terracrosser was a big help, especially when a jinetero is helping you to go to somewhere else

Google Maps or TomTom

Hey,
does anyone know, if there are settings in Google Maps oder TomTom Navigator 7, that tells the applications, to show me the way by foot. So that the route-calculation ignoes one-way streets and prefers pedestrian zones?
Thank you!!!!
TomTom 7 and iGo8 does this.
And how can I tell Tomtom not to guide me to the highway ;-)
Thank you
in the menu, go to "Change Preferences, Planning Preferences" (5th screen in preferences)
Perfect!!
Thank you very much!

Igo8 does that. You can choose, if you are in car, by foot, on bicycle or in ambulance confused. But anyway, its a fantastic program, i dont understand why tom tom is so popular, i think Igo8 is much much better
but you will have lag on the diamond, no matter wich one you use
I dont have any lag of importance. I think it works great Only thing is that i think its rather slow to find the satelites

i thought this for a few months, and tried both to start with, but have gone back to TomTom 7 (used to use version 6 on my Artemis).
just prefer the simpler interface, and the traffic updates
You are right. Igo8 is much more advanced i think. So if you didnt need all the options maybe Tom Tom is better for you

I have never had any lag on my Touch Diamond when using TT6 - it works just fine for me.
To the OP - Google maps will not give you turn by turn guidance whereas TT will. And as other posters have siad it is just a case of changing preferences to get a walking route.

Unless I just haven't found out how to do it you can't get a 'crow files' route in TT6. It still tries to take you on roads rather than pedestrian alleyways. e.g. Try going from Green Park to Victoria St in London. It won't take you to Queen Anne's Gate but sends you towards Buck House.
You can in CoPilot Live6 btw. This was handy if you parked the car somewhere, stored the location, and went walking in the country/forests/etc. Helped you get back to the car using teh most direct route.

A true "crows flies" is not possible in real life - it will be routing you through people's living rooms and back gardens!
However TTN6 does have an option to choose a walking route, which will then utilise the footpaths it is aware of and enable you to walk the wrong way up one-way streets, take prohibited turns etc. To get this just go into preferences/planning preferences and choose "ask me everytime I plan". You will then be be offered the choice of a walking route when you pland a route. How good it is will depend upon what footpaths the map has on it.
However, just like the co-pilot, TT is primarily used for road navigation so will not have footpaths and tracks out in the countryside - for that you need a different type of software that uses Ordinance Survey type digital maps

I didn't mean literally crow flies which is why I put the words in ' 's. CP6 walking mode definitely showed a straight dotted line to the destination which was handy on occasions. The arrow showed you the direction you were walking but teh dotted line always pointed to the destination so you knew if you were going the wrong way. TT6 will not give you that even when you choose walking.
PS - I know you want a totally different type of unit and mapping (e.g. OS based) for serious off road walking

A couple questions about Navigation

Hi, I'm from Spain and therefore quite new to using the Navigation app. Therefore there are a couple doubts I have about it:
-I have seen that the app is able to calculate the traffic on route, and represent it via a green dot on the bottom left corner, or painting the line green. How does google have that information?
-Also, it's possible to use voice search to choose your destination but, can you do that to navigate to one of your contacts? e.g. saying "john smith" or "john smith's house" won't use your contacts at all, but just do a map search for the terms.
Thanks in advance for your help.
