Hello,
I'm quite new to android and after reading around the forums for the captivate, I was wondering exactly which is better, SRE or the Unleash the Beast?
I come from HTC Fuze and I am really excited about the Captivate I just got. And like most new owners, I'm concerned about what exactly I am doing with phone. Please help me.
SRE all the way
SRE provides way more options. Sideloading enabled by default, overclocking, disabled GPS logging, mobile access point, usb tethering... definitely the way to go until BuglessPete ever comes back (if he does)
I've been reading up on the SRE thread and it seems I have to do a nandroid backup and titanium backup but doesn't those 2 require the phone to be rooted?
What exactly is sideloading? I've been trying to figure it out but all people said that it let non-market apps to be installed to the phone but how would I install the unit?
I like SRE.
Sideloading is exactly what you said it is. Instead of installing via the Market, you just transfer a .apk file to your phone, open it with a file manager and it will install.
Seems like the SRE is the popular choice to go, but do I have to do those backups like the nandroid and titamium back up before I do SRE even though I need to root?

It will root for you no worries.
I've used both and I prefer SRE, I ran UTB for a month and after all the bugs were out of SRE I flashed it and it is awsome. Then get Ryna's one click lag fix in the Market and install it, you'll get rid of the lag and it posts quad scores over 2400, stock is between 800-900.
You won't be able to use Nandroid or Titanium without Root.

This is the best choice for sideloading apps. Very simple to use and it does the work for you. No need for an ADB shell or any of that, easier on noobs like me.
First off, Thank you guys for your post. I decided as suggest to do the SRE. Am I suppose to notice any difference when I finish up the SRE?
Also, any recommendation of apps I should get now that my phone has freedom?

I just received my Samsung Captivate and used UTB first, but am thinking I may want to try SRE, do I need to do anything before I run SRE, and can I just do this over UTB. I have not flashed any roms or anything like that. Thanks for your assistance.

you really should read through as many (all) the pages of SRE as you can, but since I've been keeping up with it I'll help you out. According to DesignGears and several others, if you're running UTB you can just flash over it and it won't matter.
just put update.zip on your SD card, boot into recovery, reinstall packages

I would do all of your backups and then flash back to the stock ROM and apply SRE.
If I recall correctly, you are recommended to flash to stock, but I read in their forums you can just do it over the UTB. Here is a link to their thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=751934

I flashed SRE over UTB and had no problems whatso ever..enjoy SRE its awesome being overclocked and stable @ 1.2GHz!
i flashed to SRE last night, coming from JM5 i9000 rom, this thing is smokin now.
I'm about to stay reading up on SRE, but can anyone tell me if this will affect any ota updates, I'm on jh3 now with UTB and that's about it. Also am I going to have to re-load anything after I flash this over Utb?

I was forced into flashing to stock when I did something--still not sure what--to get a blank screen after boot, so I decided, what the hey, instead of just rooting, go with SuperRooter (which I assume is being called SRE now) and get lots of goodies with it. I'm a true believer, what with a truly open market, no more bloatware, ext4 file system, etc.
I didn't do Nandroid or Titanium Backup...didn't know how at the time. But since I had been using AppBrain, reinstalling all my apps took longer than it would have using Titanium and I lost my app settings, but it wasn't anything to cry about. So if you're not using Titanium yet then I'd recommend you go to AppBrain, sign up, download the app, and run it before going this route.
It worked just fine for me. If there's a problem, just get Odin and a ROM to reflash the phone (instructions are available all over the place on how to do this, particularly at the top of this very forum). It seems to take a lot to brick your phone, so don't be scared to jump in. Learning new stuff is fun! Just keep a cool head if you blow it...you can most likely fix it in pretty short order.
Ok, so after having a long battle in my head about whether I should buy the iPhone 4 or the Captivate, I decided to go on ahead and buy the captivate.
I recently found out about something called "rooting" and have been reading up about it for the past few days.
I learned that people like to root especially for tethering and installing android rom updates that have not been released yet by their carriers. However, I would probably NOT use tethering because I am planning to get the $15 per month, 200mb per month, data plan.
I have installed custom Roms before on my Sony Xperia X1, so I know the general risks of installing them. However, I am new to android, and I have a few questions about rooting.
What exactly does rooting allow you to do?
I remember reading that you must root your phone in order to sideload apps (install non-market apps, right?). This was the main reason I wanted to root. This program seems to solve that problem.
Next, I want to be able to install themes, like Launcher Pro especially. Is it possible to do this without rooting by sideloading the app or must I root my phone?
Third, I know that another great advantage of rooting your phone is that you can overclock to 1.2 GHZ. Does this feature really give you that much of a power boost? Also, does it, in any way, decrease your device's lifespan? If so, is it worth it?
I don't really mind the at&t bloatware, and their censorship of the market is easily passed by turning on wifi and putting your phone in airplane mode (I think).
Now, let's say that I DO decide to root my phone. If I do, I would use the "1 click to root" program, in order to minimize the risk of bricking.

Root is a linux term, or a unix term. On older systems the root user is like the admin in windows. On some modern distributions you can't log in as root but can use the root permissions with use of a root password and a sudo command (super user do). so the term super user and root are interchangeable.
To root your phone grants you root permissions via an app that grants or denies permissions to individual apps, no password required. By adding a terminal interface you can do nearly anything that can be done on a pc with linux. It is needed for many mods and having it and knowing what to do with it can be very satisfying.

Odin is a computer application to re flash your phone. Most mods can be done on a captivate without it but get it just in case you do something stupid! I did!
The overclock is pretty safe. It doesn't really hinder battery life much because if it goes to full speed it gets the task done faster so its back to being throttled sooner. Its stock voltage and there is likely more to come with over and under voltages. The hummingbird has a bit more potential than that. That said the phone runs great without it.
I believe a nandroid backup can be done in clockwork recovery. And my phone didn't need to side loss launcher pro. I was already rooted but I don't think root is needed either. The search on the marker doesn't always find it. Also try adw. And do the lag fix. To see what your phone can really do in quadrant.
I used the over clock with unleash the beast and the lag fix, then I set a replacement lockscreen wrong and locked up my phone, I decided to reflash it. Now I use SRE and the lag fix. But it doesn't include the wireless teather app that comes with unleash the beast.

Root if you need to - if nothing you want to do requires root, then don't bother.
You can install (sideload) apps without root. Again, root access is NOT required to sideload. The wondermachine does it by using the Android SDK (they baked it in); but you can just as easily download the Android SDK, unzip it, go to the tools directory and use the ADB tool to install apps. USB Debugging mode is required for this or the wondermachine (it is a checkbox you click on the phone).
Rooting will let you sideload directly on the phone without connecting to a pc, but you need to do more then root, you need to change a db file.
Other launchers are installed without root, so you don't need root for this.
You do need root for nandroid backup, but since it will backup your present state, a restore will still be a rooted phone.
So if you want to restore to factory fresh - the ODIN one click is the way to go. It has the ROM and Odin all in one package. Other version of Odin allows you flash different ROMs.
Nandroid and RomManager are used to switch ROMs and restore all on the phone - so you can install a new ROM, but then rollback to the old with all your configuration intact - this requires root.
That 200mb plan is going to be tough to stay within on the Captivate. The background syncing with google and mail app activity will chew up alot more than you think.
Your first concern with this phone will be how to control data, not whether or not to root.
I do think controlling the data use will be easier on the Captivate than it would be on the iPhone4.
For simplicity, I think SRE 1.2.1a does the best job of "remodeling" the phone.

Also, about the data problem, I plan to have wifi on and 3g off most of the time. I don't really find 3g to be a necessity.
Also, is there a way to roll back to your previous ROM and keep all your apps? Or would you have to reinstall them fresh?

Well, this is much like there is a sexy girl in your room and people tell you to do nothing!!! People here tells you a lot of cool stuffs with being rooted, that changes "what you want to do"
PS: In my case I decided to wait until the 2.2 comes out. From now on, I just read this forum . However, I did root my phone and flash back to stock using Odin, just to see whether it is like original afterward (and it seems to be!). I believe I still have warranty with the phone then (can anyone confirm about that again for me???)

Titanium backup, and maybe samsung kies, I know kies works for contacts, and media and synching to outlook. I thought it works for apps but I may be thinking of htc sync, I never really use either.

If you flashed back to stock no one knows you rooted so your warranty is safe.

Is Cyanogenmod the only Froyo option for the CDMA Hero? I'm thinking of upgrading from the Sprint 2.1 firmware. I have several questions:

Can I downgrade to the original Sprint 2.1 firmware without breaking anything? I really don't want an expensive phone-shaped paperweight if anything goes wrong.
Can I keep the HTC sense UI (I only want the main menu dialer anyway)? I saw that thread saying Sense 2.2 is about 85% done.

If all you want from Sense is the dialer, there is always Dialer One on the Market. I have been running more AOSP-based ROMs than I ever really ran Sense, so when I finally got bored with the stock dialer and gave it a shot, I didn't even notice it was supposed to replicate the Sense dialer, ha. It's a hell of a lot more customizable, and I think it's much "cleaner" looking overall (especially if you have it set to hide the green dial button in the contact list, and NOT have the keypad when the dialer is open by default, and taking up at least half the screen).

Backup apps/SMS, etc.
Backup using nandroid
Revert to the 2.1 .5 (NOT .6 or .7) firmware
Flash Cyanogenmod
Restore app/SMS backups
Install GApps, Sprint Apps, Sense port (as needed)
hello the only question i have is about the froyo 2.2. i Installed CyanogenMod-6.1.0-RC1 on my hero 200 and its running great only problem i found that i have is i have no flash support on my browser. what should i download to get my browser back in running order as far as going to most of the sites i used to that had a flash media player embeded? I tried adobe flash 10 but, from what i searched it looks like to me anyway that it wont work with this phone and never will? any ideas on what i should do next

Yes, the Hero really can't install full Flash 10.1 because the default specs just won't handle Flash. Supposedly its possible with some overclocking and/or JIT enabled, but even then most ppl say it's not perfect.
We can install a Flash Lite plugin to browsers....try searching for that either on the market or through Google.

You can root with .7. I used Regaw's last time I did after an ruu to .7 build. There are great Gingerbread roms now. Aosp flavored like Jaybob's Rom which has the newest .35 kernel baked in; cm7 has begun using that kernel in their builds as well ( although it might not be the newest yet). You can download titanium backup to back up apps and data (sms too). Just follow the directions in the op of whatever Rom you are looking to install.

It worked! That was nice and painless, just don't have your Hero plugged into a USB hub with a dodgy cord like I did. I'm going to go and disable OTA updates as described in the old tutorial. Should I install Cyanogenmod or aosp? It looks like some of the Hero wiki links are pretty dated now, and the only aosp 2.3 link is to a 2.3 aosp labeled unstable and the thread mentioning that the dev quit working on it. I'd love a recommendation on how to get a stable 2.3 install running, I mostly want Exchange sync and tethering.
Id reccomend jaybob rom or kush I'd say jaybob since he still does update from time to time both r still awesome

As I'm reading about installing HC, Froyo or CM7 on eMMC, I'm curious about "saving" my current stock eclair rom in case I want to put it back...
If I make a CWM Recovery microSD, boot off that, do a backup... Can I just restore that if I want to get back to the way it is now? (assuming I just install something like Froyo to eMMC)
There are a few threads for stock recovery (check search). That will put it back like it was when you took it out if the box.
It's easier than trying to capture the partitions and data when someone else has already fine to all the trouble if doing it.

Thank you, I understand there are a few threads over in the developer section on how to get back to "out of the box" type stock, and I have read them and they all talk about using the done by someone else "images" or "roms."
They don't seem to apply as I've setup eclair pretty much the way I want to... so I am not looking for how to get back to "stock like out of the box"... but rather to the eclair as I have it setup now.
i.e. if I want to got back to eclair, I don't want to have to reconfigure everything all over again.

Yes, you can do the backup like that, save it on your PC or something and restore later when you need it. I did that before.

Thank you for the confirmation.
After 3 years, I am still rocking the G1 as my MAIN everyday general use android phone. (Because honestly.. aside from a G2 HTC nothing has come out that really replaces the overall usefulness of the G1)
I still use Enoms 1.6 rom. I checked before about updating, but back then, everyone had gripes or issues, or slowdowns that didnt really make it worth updating from. Anyways, just checking on if anything is different now. For someone who uses a partitioned sd card, apps installed to SD card automatically (not just moved) and so, is there really something worth upgrading to or is enoms rom still overall the better stable rom for us G1 users? Thanks. =)
you will always get the best speed and stability out of donut roms, there are lots of good ones to chose from so take your pick there. if you want to stick with 1.6 then you still might consider the 2708+ updated radio/spl that allows for 14 more megabites of ram, you will definitely notice this! after the update just reflash your rom and a compatible kernel over it.
there nice 2.1, 2.2, and 2.3 roms out there, plenty good enough for a daily driver but there are some lags compared to any good donut rom. if you want a taste try froyobylaszlo if you like it than there are lots more new roms that compare well to that.
2708+ updated radio/spl?
Usually I have about mid 20s-30 for memory free. Which seems decent for the most part, since everything else runs off the sd card. Only reason its lower since I use that compcache stuff.
As for the info, thanks, yea, figured donut is still better least for a every day use and general purpose.
Pls don't mix up RAM and internal memory. Internal memory is comparable to the hard disk of your PC, while RAM is memory which is used for executing programms.
The 2708/0013d combo will give you more RAM (112MB instead of 97MB), so most likely you can renounce on using compcache, but you will need an adapted kernel otherwise you will get bootloops.

Ah ok. Is enoms rom able to work with this new spl? Not even sure what would be the best way to do this.. Nandroid backup, flash new spl, and nandroid restore?

the method i would do is backup everything via titanium backup, back up any sms or my call log via sms backup +, then i would make sure i have all the requirements and then flash the updated radio and spl. after this i would flash whatever rom i choose (stick with your donut if youd like) then i would flash rom and a compatible kernel over it, reboot, restore and be happy. also i would make sure i have all the files i need ahead of time, this being amon_ra (may need it) radio, spl, orange.nbh (in case of emergency) my rom of choice, and kernel of choice (if needed)
this is the way i'd go about it, you can try any method youd like there are tons of threads about this update so i would recommend reading a few first
oh and even if it sounds complicated its well worth it

hanvet used enoms with the new radio/spl but i have used other 1.6 roms with it so im sure this will be fine too. just make sure you flash the appropriate kernel over the rom. if you take a look at ezterry's thread on kernels or even on the 2708+ page you will find plenty to choose from

Yes, it works. I've tried it just some minutes ago. Not sure if everything works, because I did only a quick check, but it's booting, you can log in browser is working, ...
The only thing you need to do is flashing a different kernel which supports the 2708 radio on top of the ROM. I flashed Terry's BiffTest Kernel but also the newer one should work.
If you like to get some more internal memory you could also use MTD-Partitions set to [67,2] which would give you a data partition size of almost 145MB
Btw.: I suppose I could not run such a ROM as my daily driver, it looks like it's already 10 years old ...
Hah found better rom called supertinhte 2.2 rom. Based on T-Mobile myTouch 3G.
Very Very fast ,comes with 82.19 free internal space.I think it is faster than froyo by lazlo with ramhack. Type it in google cant post link cause i am new here
I really like two [email protected] ROMs on my two G1s. I use them as my daily drivers.
I use SuperFroyo on one and I use SuperCDSIv4 (Donut) community edition (looks soooo much better than Mlign, etc...) on the other.
They are both great. I uninstalled virtually everything from SuperFroyo that I could. I can verify that you have no issue with deleting Talk, News and Weather for sure. Also, if you use another keyboard, you can delete the android keyboard. I did that on another installation. I delete stuff to have all apps internal.
SuperCSDIv4 is a little faster most of the time, but the niceties of Froyo are good too so I use and really like both. I recommend Lightning Launcher, then unistall ADW and LauncherPro if you go with Superfroyo. That launcher is hard to set up, but it is really light. Just go into themes and select "Zune" and try that. It is a cool theme and fast.
I think 2.2 is more fit for G1. some apps can't work on 1.6 ROM
True but the fastest 2.2 is slower then the fastest 1.6, if all you need is speed then donut is the way to go. You can push some apks onto donut roms that aren't found in the market but if you need some apps and other things froyo offers then you may need to move up

Apps for 2.2 arent really needed on the G1 screen, cept maybe those Authenticator apps. I have a diff android if I need those higher end apps.
I am a very proud G1 user too!
But I will suggest going too the CyanogenMod 5 Mod. With the proper tweaks, it reallly runs like a charm. Super E and Super F are also good ideas. Just google them up and look how to install them!!!!
So are people still using the volume increase thing for their G1 as well? I rem using the script and so to tweak that.
To be honest this GinSense rom is very fast and stable, its 2.3.7 using a cyanogenmod base.
There is that one problem with watching movies on it (were the sound keeps going but the video resets) but that's because its a problem with the cyanogenmod base, I know because every cyanogenmod rom I had, had this problem.
I would go to a 1.6 for speed, but then I would lose out on all the apps, and this is a quite snappy rom.

No I'm pretty sure you would need to flash your rom again from scratch and then flash a compatible kernel over that

Well I see the kernel in this thread I should be flashing, but I am very confused. Ok, my SD card has its apps installed to it, the rom auto uses it for storage. I dont know if I should just be relying on Titanium backup for a backup and restore or nandroid.
Im "open" to the idea of upgrading the rom if its speedy. I just dont wanna lose all the apps and work I had on this rom already. Just so confusing atm. Been a LONG time since I had to flash or work with the G1. (Never need to mess with something that works flawless) My other androids I flash the **** out of and update heh. My g1 is my baby, so always was careful. I wouldnt mind that extra ram tho if it really helps.
So what do you all think is the best way to secure keeping my stuff and easily update this?

Just wondering how my apps 2 sd will be, since on Enom, I did this the old school way and not the apps2sd thing. Which makes me think Titanium backup is the best way to restore apps on to a new rom (without data or should I be able to backup with data and restore with data, so used to not restoring with data)
Edit 2: Ok is is possible to do this, based on that thread. I use nandroid to backup, then do the steps, restore using nandroid and before I boot into the phone, I flash that biff any kernel thing, THEN reboot into the phone. Would that work and not lose anything?
