There is a very good write up on how to root 2.1 by craigcrawfore, i know his same post is on droidforums.net and also modaco.
heres the link, worked for me, on my uk milestone with 2.1
http://android.modaco.com/content/m...m/308422/milestone-2-1-update-and-root-guide/
cheers for this craig, im sure ive seen you on xda before.
Does rooting voids warranty? A noob question though.
Kinda...legally, the dont have a leg to stand on if the fault isnt related to the root, but overclocking etc could result in hardware failier due to root. There should be an unrooting method or else get an official update package from moto (RUU sorta thing) if you wanna take take your device back
Thanks for the quick reply. My device is getting hotter even with underclocked 550MHz. As u said overclocking on this device had more chances of hardware failure. Ok if i find any package to unroot n get me back to stock, i will try rooting.
If I root my milestone and motorola releases FROYO update, am I be able to update to FROYO without any problem? or Do I need to come back to stock n then update?
I will load the 2.1 sbf file or the 2.0 or even 2.0.1 version. Then do the ota updates.
The unroot method would be download rsd lite and then load a sbf file.
Easy and under 5 mins! U will be completely factory reset at this stage.

RUU does take you back to an unrooted stock phone.
Also, if you do want to get sprint updates you would need to RUU it back. Chances are however that if you get a Sprint update, our current Root will be patched, therefor you won't be able to run a ROM until someone finds a new root method. Which will more than likely be more difficult to find than the first root exploit was...kind of a Murphy's law thing.
XDA will likely have an update just as good or better out by the time Sprint does release theirs. Definitely will have the same update out for root users within 24 hours. At least historically.
O good, thanks for the verification... just making search... then i will await the communties update
Hello everyone, my HTC DREAM touch screen just died on me today meaning it doesn't detect me. I tried battery pull and soft/hard reset and even wipe. I plan on bringing it back to rogers for a replacement or repair but I gotta revert this back to stock. My Phone is rooted and is rogers its also running cyanogen. How I unroot and install the factory firmware, i have looked through google and here and i may missed some or didn't see any results that reflected what I was looking for.
You obviously did not search Google correctly.
Al you'll really need is to find the DREAIMG.nbh file for RC29, and use fastboot to flash it over. That should take you to 1.0, I believe. You may need to find an official OTA update for Cupcake to flash as well, you may not.

Just getting it back to 1.0 is fine. All the OP would have to say is he never wanted to get the updates.
Here is the factory cupcake build you can use. http://androidoverdrive.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=85
So if I unrooted using the DREAIMG.nbh procedure 48 hours ago, how long do I have to wait for the OTA upgrade to bring me current? Is there anything I can do to hurry it along? For example, will it not come through if certain apps are being used, etc? Or do I just ... wait longer?
ummm, Rogers doesn't have OTA updates. Just get the e911 update thing from rogers and run that. It will unroot you and put you to the latest rom.
FYI you can now say good bye to root as the new phone that you get from rogers will not allow root.
I feel for you as I am in the same stupid F'N sinking boat. F Rogers.

I will not scold you for not reading enough or reading correctly. I have been reading this site, others, and searching for 3 months to get to the point where I am now. There are thousands of posts and it is often difficult to piece it all together and sort the wheat from the chaff.
I can offer what I have found.

I thought this post might be helpful since it offers a stock rogers rom, but it says 32A, so I don't konw if that will work with the Dream.

This seems cool, but i can't find an md5sum for it, so there seems to be no way to verify the download. It would be a shame to brick the phone with a bad download.
I wonder if anyone has used it successfully and has a checksum?
Maybe [email protected] could help us?
3.

"
Regardless, heres the original radio (3.22.20.17) and the original recovery (WARNING: UNROOTED) from rogers dream:

"
but again, I cannot find and md5sum for the file, so I am a bit hesitant to use it if a brick could result.
I think suggestion #2 would be great if there was a checksum for the file.
I would keep a copy of it handy as well if I could verify it.

To update to the official 2.1 do I need to do anything special first? Im currently running Fresh 2.0d with a couple of other mods. I'm wondering if I need to go back to the stock rom first or can I update with out restore. Srry for noob question but I searched and couldn't find anything and before anyone says it I know I lose root.
The way you would unroot proir to the new RUU was to RUU, so there should be anything special you have to do. Just follow the instructions on HTC's site.
Just remember, if you RUU to 2.1 YOU WILL LOOSE ROOT!
this was a public service announcement.
Thanks and I know I lose root but not a big deal to me because its still 2.1. By the time 2.2 comes out they will have a root fix ready for me to get it.
by time 2.2 comes out?! you are very optimistic...
So I rooted my phone with CF-Root-XX_XEU_JPY-v1.3-BusyBox-1.17.1.zip using Odin. However, my phone has the firmware version JPW ( I could've sworn it was JPY ), and then installed and ran One click Lag Fix and since doing it certain apps would crash and the phone became sluggish. So, I undid the Lag Fix but things got worse from there, such as not being able to add widgets to home screens.
So I performed a factory reset but the phone is still rooted and a little sluggish still. I've also noticed the addition of the messaging icon on the bottom bar and it wasn't there before.
How do I unroot the phone? Or am I stuck until I update to Gingerbread?
Cheers.
Ray
just flash the correct CF-root over the current one, using Odin,
then do a wipe in recovery and you should be fixed up.
if not, then its not related to the CF-root, you will have to flash a full firmware.
Thanks for the reply. However, there isn't a CF-Root for JPW nor is there a Firmware for JPW available for download from samfirmware.
I really should have looked before I leapt.
In conclusion, I'm an idiot.
All the best.
Ray
flash a kernel instead, that gives you the 2e recovery, plus a ton of extra tweaks
I've got the 2e recovery, thanks to the root I performed.
Whats worrying me is though, will my warranty be void either with my network carrier or with Samsung whilst this root is in place?
I understand Gingerbread is just around the corner, and that upgrading firmware will remove rooting, so I don't mind waiting a couple of weeks or so for the 2.3 update. After this balls up ( entirely my own fault ) I'm not confident of flashing any new firmwares or kernels or anything else until I've learned a thing or two first, as I've only had the phone a month and have mainly been a Nokia / Symbian user.
Many thanks for your help.
Ray
rooting will void warranty, but you can remove root access so know one ever knows,
flashing an official firmware will remove root, thats entirely upto you.
you can flash what you like, you can always go back to stock before sending off for repair
Well, being a total noob to Android I think I'll wait for Gingerbread and leave things on stock.
What disappointed me with Kies was I couldn't re-install the stock Firmware like I can do with my Nokia via Nokia Ovi suite or Nokia Software updater. That comes in really useful in situations such as this.
Oh well, I've learned some valuable lessons today so not all bad.
Once again thanks for the assistance.
All the best.
Ray
you can spoof kies to make it update to whatever you want
I tried that, and kies said an update was available. So I proceeded to update, Kies downloaded the update, then said my phone cannot be updated.
Thanks for the suggestion.

Hello all,
After many months of excitement, Motorola Canada released Froyo(2.2.1) for the Telus Moto Milestone. Through all of this, it seems like I've gotten the DSI and kernel errors. The 4 capacitative keys take a while to respond (3 times before they work), and my keyboard and contacts/messaging are all screwed up, color-wise.
I was looking at rooting following this guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=983516) but do not know if the vulnerable sbf's would be able to work now that I have 2.2.1.
Also, I have been told that FroyoMod is a very stable Froyo ROM, which I was looking to customize with a Gingerbread theme that he has released (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=815595). Will I be able to follow the same tutorial to revert back to stock 2.1 then apply the official Moto update (in case I need to return it for servicing)?
I've heard rumors of people bricking their phones after applying faulty radios after flashing a custom ROM. Will I need to worry about applying the proper radio? Or is fairly painless to do?
What happens if I brick my phone if I apply a wrong radio?
Sorry for all these questions, I'd like to make this entire process as easy as possible and I've never rooted a phone before!
Thanks in advance!

1. The sbf will still work, sbfs replace everything...so version does not matter
2. Radios are not such a big deal on milestone, they an be easily swapped from AOR ( if you mean basebands, i dont know of any radio files other than this)
3. You can usually reflash older sbfs, unless bootloader changed

So I will be able to use the 2.1 sbf for Canada over the 2.2.1 official Moto update that I have right now?
How would I swap the basebands and I'm guessing AOR is OpenRecovery? How would I do that.
Does anybody know if the bootloader for 2.2.1 changed?
Thanks!

1. I dont know if you can resinstall 2.1 on top of 2.2, you should...but i have never tried. At wore, you could use one of the 2.1 based roms in the dev section...i wont be the official version, but it will be eclair.
2. AOR is Androidiani open recovery...it is a different version or openrecovery with a bit more options. There is a change baseband submenu that lets you install the baseband files for each country.

People are saying that the bootloader is different between 2.1 and 2.2.1, so I think I might wait and see what others think before I try and root it. Thanks for your help!
any luck since then to root your Milestone from 2.2.1?
